Marvel has confirmed that it will make fewer movies and TV shows moving forward after a “rough” few years of theatrical flops and favoring quantity over quality.
Speaking to Empire Magazine, studio co-president Louis D’Esposito admitted that the Disney subsidiary had “learned its lesson” after it saturated the superhero genre market with projects that didn’t live up to fans’ lofty expectations. The comic book giant is now looking to reduce its output in theaters and on Disney Plus with the aim of regaining audiences’ trust after a period of diminishing box-office returns, poorly reviewed productions, and other criticisms.
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) riding the crest of a wave in the wake of the billion dollar-spinning flicks Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Marvel and Disney have leaned hard into churning out multiple movies and shows over the past few years, and some films, such as Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and TV shows like Loki and X-Men 97 have been met with critical acclaim.

However, for every successful project, Marvel has pumped out an unexpectedly high number of duds. Secret Invasion is viewed as the worst TV series that the studio has ever made, while highly anticipated films including Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels earned mixed reviews from fans and critics. In the latter’s case, it holds the unwanted record of not only being the least profitable MCU movie of all time, but also the only one that made a significant monetary loss.
Asked about the troubles that Marvel has dealt with recently, D’Esposito admitted: “It’s been a rough time. If we just stayed on top, that would have been the worst thing that could have happened to us. We took a little hit [but] we’re coming back strong.
“Maybe when you do too much, you dilute yourself a little bit. We’re not going to do that anymore. We learned our lesson. [We’ll release] maybe two to three films a year and one or two shows, as opposed to doing four films and four shows.”

D’Esposito’s comments about Marvel’s aim to rein in its output were echoed by Disney CEO Bob Iger during yesterday’s (May 8) Q2 2024 earnings call. Elaborating on Disney and Marvel’s commitment to do just that, Iger said: “I’ve been working hard with the studio [Disney} to reduce output and focus more on quality [and] that’s particularly true with Marvel.

“We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four, and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, or at the maximum three. And we’re working hard on what that path is, we’ve got a couple of good films in 2025 and then we’re heading to more Avengers, which we’re extremely excited about.”
The problem that Marvel has, however, is that it’ll be some time before it can start turning those words into meaningful action. It already has a whole host of Marvel Phase 5 and Marvel Phase 6 projects in the works, and if these are to see the light of day (i.e., if none of them are unceremoniously canceled), it’ll need to continue releasing three movies and three to four TV shows per year in order to get them out of the door.
Those strikes have had a knock-on effect, with Marvel now likely to release four films next year. Three have been confirmed to land in theaters – Captain America: New World Order, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four– but, with Blade also potentially entering production this year ahead of a late-2025 launch, Marvel may have to go back on its word as early as next year if it wants to deliver those movies to audiences and boost its revenue streams after a lackluster 2023.

That’s all before you take its TV output into account, too. Marvel has debuted two new shows on Disney Plus, aka one of the world’s best streaming services, this year in Echo and X-Men 97. Per it Q2 2024 earnings presentation, three more – live-action series Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, plus animated shows in Eyes of Wakanda and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man – are also coming in 2024. Heading into 2025, Daredevil: Born Again, Ironheart, and Marvel Zombies will likely launch on the service. That’s not taking Wonder Man, which is in development but hasn’t actually been announced by Marvel at any point, into account, either, nor the already greenlit X-Men 97 season 2 and What If…? season 3.
Add in other projects in early development – Avengers 5 and Avengers 6 – plus rumors surrounding Shang-Chi 2, Thor 5, Doctor Strange 3, Black Panther 3, and the X-Men‘s live-action arrival, and you can start to see Marvel’s problem. It can’t expect to develop all of these films, or other projects starring new and returning characters, without breaking its obligation to lessen its output. Something’s got to give and, right now, I’m not sure if it’ll be Marvel’s verbal commitment to actually reduce the number of films and shows it makes, or its decision to walk back on its revived ‘quality over quantity’ approach.
The Google Pixel 8 launched on October 4, 2023, and so we’d expect the Google Pixel 9 to appear on or around that date this year – but some five months ahead of time, we’ve already got a look at our first Pixel 9 case.
This comes from accessory maker Thinborne and the team at Android Central, and the suggestion is that the design and dimensions of the Google Pixel 9 have been confirmed as far as the supply chain and industry partners are concerned.
According to the Thinborne case listings, there will be three models: the Pixel 9, the Pixel 9 Pro, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL. That chimes with earlier rumors too – apparently the XL model is the largest of three, as you would expect from its name.
We’ve previously seen some leaked photos of the Pixel 9, and these cases match up with those images: the Pixel 9 is expected to be slightly flatter than the Pixel 8, with a rear camera module that’s more of an island than a bar.

As always with leaks and rumors, it’s important to bear in mind that nothing is certain until its official. However, the number of leaks we’ve seen pointing in the same direction mean we’re pretty confident that we know what the Pixel 9 is going to look like.
Another rumor we’ve previously come across suggests the standard Pixel 9 is going to get an extra camera on the back this year, a telephoto camera that should improve the optical zoom capabilities of the most affordable handset in the flagship series.
There’s also been talk that the Tensor G4 chipset expected to power the Pixel 9 phones is going to mean a boost in battery life as well as performance. Support for satellite messaging has been predicted for these upcoming devices too.

No doubt there will be more rumors and leaks to sift through between now and October, but in the meantime Google I/O 2024 gets underway on May 14. We should hear more about Android 15 at the event, and it’s likely that the Google Pixel 8a will be unveiled.
It’s hard to believe we’re already a third of the way through 2024. That said, when we’ve had so many fantastic shows to stream since the year began, it’s little wonder the time has flown by.
The world’s best streaming services aren’t done bringing us more potentially great series, either. Between now and September 1, there are lots of new shows, plus the highly anticipated return of fan favorites, to look forward to. With that in mind, I’ve handpicked 10 of the most exciting shows I can’t wait to watch in mid-2024 (NB: I would’ve includedCobra Kai season 6, whose first installment is out on July 18, but it was too late to include in this article. Sorry, Cobra Kai fans!).
Anyway, from epic sci-fi adventures and bloody fantasy to stellar superhero outings and romantic royal dramas, here are the shows I’m excited for in the weeks and months ahead.
Dark Matter (Apple TV Plus)
Release date: May 8
Apple TV Plus has become my go-to streamer for all things sci-fi over the past two years – with good reason. From Foundation and Silo to Severance and Constellation, there are plenty of top-tier shows of this genre to immerse myself in on the tech giant’s streaming platform.
Dark Matter will hope to add its name to that growing list. Based on Blake Crouch’s mind-bending, best-selling novel of the same name, it stars Joel Edgerton as Jason Dessen, a physics professor and devoted family man who becomes embroiled in a multiversal mystery after he’s abducted from his reality. Jennifer Connolly, Alice Braga, and Oakes Fegley are among its strong supporting cast.
Considering how mind-bogglingly inventive Dark Matter‘s trailer looks, I suspect Apple will have another sci-fi hit on its hands. Expect, then, to see it join our illustrious best Apple TV Plus shows list in due course.

Doctor Who season 14 (Disney Plus/BBC iPlayer)

Fourteen years after ending his initial tenure as the showrunner of Doctor Who‘s revival (if you discount the 60th-anniversary specials and 2023 Christmas episode), Russell T Davies returns to take the legendary British sci-fi series in a bold, new direction.
Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson reprise their roles as the 15th Doctor and Ruby Rose from the aforementioned Christmas special, to lead the rebooted show’s 14th season filled with daring, fun-filled adventures across time and space. Indeed, Doctor Who season 14’s official trailer invites you to get your groove on before it materializes on Disney Plus internationally and BBC One/BBC iPlayer in the UK.
Incidentally, this is the first time a new season of Doctor Who will air on Disney Plus due to a landmark deal that’ll even see Doctor Who season 14 debut on the service before BBC One. Here’s hoping Davies, Gatwa, and Gibson can get the Who-niverse back on track after the lackluster Jodie Whittaker era and earn it a spot on our best Disney Plus shows list.

Bridgerton season 3 part 1 (Netflix)
Release date: May 16
Okay, I’m going to level with you – Bridgerton isn’t really my idea of a good time. But, considering one of the best Netflix shows is set to return to our screens later this month, I felt I had to include it.
This time around, Netflix‘s aristocratic drama will focus its attentions on Nicola Coughlan’s Penelope Featherington and Luke Newton’s Colin Bridgerton, with the duo engaging in some rather steamy scenarios that’ll no doubt set the cat among the Regency-era pigeons.
Like a number of other Netflix TV Originals in recent times, Bridgerton season 3 will be released in two parts – volume 1 arriving in mid-May, and volume 2 launching in early June. I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether to wait until the full season is out before getting your latest romantic period drama fix.
Bridgerton season 3 part 1 will release in full on May 16.
Picking up in the immediate aftermath of its predecessor’s surprising (and bizarre) finale, Outer Range season 2 reunites us with the Abbott family – led once more by morally complex patriarch Royal (Marvel alumnus Josh Brolin) – as they contend with their questionable decisions from season 1.
That’s not all they’ll have to deal with, mind you. The Wyoming-based family will have to fight off threats on multiple fronts, including slanderous and physical attacks from vengeful rivals the Tillersons. Oh, and they’ll need to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding the black hole that suddenly appeared in their backyard last season. Catch up on this fascinating neo-Western sci-fi show before its second installment arrives ASAP.
Outer Range season 2 will debut with a single-episode premiere. New entries will arrive weekly.
Eric will see Cumberbatch take on the role of Vincent, a New York-based puppeteer whose nine-year-old son goes missing one morning on his way to school. Increasingly desperate for answers about his child’s whereabouts, Vincent becomes more unhinged as the story progresses. He eventually becomes convinced that his son’s drawings of the titular ERIC – a blue monster puppet that Vincent created – are the only way to bring his son home.
The next big Star Wars TV show kicks off a packed June for the world’s most popular streamers. Set 100 years before Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: The Acolyte will bring the legendary franchise’s High Republic era to life in live-action for the first time. Based on the footage I’ve seen, and the stuff I’ve read about it, The Acolyte sounds like it could be the best Disney Plus show ever made in that galaxy far, far away.
Surprisingly positioned as a neo-noir mystery-thriller, it stars Amandla Stenberg (Bodies Bodies Bodies) as Mae, a former Padawan who reluctantly reunites with her Jedi Master Sol (Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-sae) to investigate a series of murders. An all-star cast, including Carrie-Anne Moss, Jodie Turner, Dafne Keen, Manny Jacinto, Charlie Barnett, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, and Joonas Suotamo, is also set to feature.
Star Wars: The Acolyte will debut with a two-episode premiere. New installments will be released weekly.
The Boys season 4 (Prime Video)
Release date: June 13
The Boys are back in town – well, next month, anyway. That’s right, the hugely successful Prime Video superhero series returns in shockingly hilarious fashion in mid-June as Amazon, Disney, and HBO (more on HBO below) go head-to-head for viewers’ attention throughout June.
The Boys season 4 will pick up events following its predecessor and Gen V season 1, the college-based spin-off that proved equally popular with audiences. It’ll continue to explore the increasing tensions between the titular Supe hunters and The Seven, aka the world’s best superhero team led by the erratic Homelander, in typically gory and satirized fashion.

Presumed Innocent (Apple TV Plus)
Release date: June 14
Apple continues to adapt best-selling novels for its streaming platform in June with Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent, an eight-part series that aims to offer a more intriguing and twisty-turny murder mystery than Tom Holland’sThe Crowded Room did.
Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Chicago deputy chief prosecutor Rosat ‘Rusty’ Sabich, who finds himself at the center of a horrific murder case when he’s shockingly accused of committing said crime. Of course, it doesn’t help that the married Rosat had an affair with the woman he’s suspected of killing. Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, O-T Fagbenie, and Elizabeth Marvel join Gyllenhaal on the show’s roster. J.J. Abrams is among Presumed Innocent‘s many executive producers, too.
Presumed Innocent will premiere on Apple TV Plus with two episodes. Subsequent entries will be released every week.
House of the Dragon season 2 (Max)
Release date: June 18 (US); June 19 (UK and Australia)
A stacked June is rounded out by the return of this critically acclaimed Game of Thrones prequel series, which will be available to stream on HBO and Max in the US.
Set in the immediate aftermath of season 1’s stunning and emotion-laden finale, House of the Dragon season 2 will mark the start of the ‘Dance of Dragons’ – an epic civil war that destroyed House Targaryen, the family that ruled Westeros for generations, from the inside. Expect plenty of fire (and the odd glimpse of ice, judging by the footage I’ve seen) from this high-fantasy show.
House of the Dragon‘s sophomore outing was given an official Max release date and three (!) fiery trailers in late March, which confirmed it’ll go up against Bridgerton, The Acolyte, and The Boys in June. You and I, dear reader, are being well and truly spoiled on the TV front in mid-2024, aren’t we?
NB: House of the Dragon season 2 will be viewable on Sky Atlantic in the UK and Binge in Australia.
The Umbrella Academy season 4 (Netflix)

Release date: August 8
With July looking like a sparse month for shows that piqued my interest, we’re fast-forwarding to August for the final entry of this article. Step forward The Umbrella Academy season 4, the last outing in Netflix’s hit superhero series. Bizarrely, it will only comprise six episodes instead of the 10 its three forebears were made up of.
All six episodes of The Umbrella Academy season 4 are expected to be released on launch day.

Amazon has unveiled a new trailer for The Boys season 4 – and, I don’t know about you, but I didn’t have superpowered, violent farm animals on my bingo card for the show’s next installment.
Revealed yesterday (May 3) during The Boys season 4 panel at Mexico Comic-Con – and released online immediately after its world premiere – the series’ latest trailer teases another blood-soaked entry on Prime Video. Not only that, though, it also confirms that key storylines from companion show Gen V will carry over into the main series. Oh, and that all-out war between the titular vigilantes and the Seven, the most-famous superhero team in The Boys universe, is about to erupt. And yes, those are Compound V-injected, Supe-d up farm animals – including an Alien-like, chest bursting flock of chickens and a group of flying sheep.
But enough teasing. Check out the official trailer for The Boys‘ fourth outing below:
This new batch of footage gives us a even better idea of what to expect from one of the best Prime Video shows‘ fourth installment. Where those Gen V ties are concerned there’s Billy revealing the existence of a Supe-killing virus to the rest of the titular crew, and appearances from superpowered college kids Sam and Cate (read our Gen V season 1 ending explained article for more details on all of this).
Elsewhere, we see Homelander’s devilish plan to seemingly make humanity bow to the Seven as new age gods. Then, there’s the apparent confirmation that politician (and secret Supe) Victoria Neuman is the US’ new vice president, plenty of brutal and gory action sequences (we’d expect nothing less from The Boys), and the ongoing ‘custody battle’ between Billy and Homelander for Ryan’s soul. In short: I can’t wait for season 4 to debut on one of the world’s best streaming services.

No. Season 4’s latest trailer seems to suggest that this will be the hit show’s final entry, but it appears that showrunner Eric Kripke isn’t putting a number on how many seasons The Boys will run for.

Originally, he revealed (via an X/Twitter Q&A in October 2020) that he had a five-season plan for the R-rated live-action series. However, speaking to Inverse in November 2023, Kripke said of The Boys‘ future: “I have since realized that literally no one in history is worse at predicting the amount of seasons of a show. I have learned my lesson and I’ve stopped predicting how many seasons these shows go. You will find out in hindsight.”
Of course, this could be smoke and mirrors on Kripke’s part. Gen V season 1 could technically be viewed as The Boys season 4, given the amount of characters who cross over from the main show into the college-based spin-off. Gen V season 2 is on the way, too, though its development was recently paused due to the shock passing of star Chance Perdamo. Add that duo together with The Boys‘ four seasons, and there’s an argument to be made that we’ve had six seasons set in The Boys‘ live-action universe. Heck, it’s actually seven seasons if you count anthology TV show The Boys Presents: Diabolical.
In summary, then: no, The Boys season 4 won’t bring Amazon’s hit franchise to an end. It could theoretically spell the end of the mainline series, but I think there’s at least one more season left in the tank for Billy, Homelander, and company, regardless of whether they feature in Gen V season 2.
I very much enjoyed the Obi-Wan Kenobi, and stuck it out with Star Wars: Ahsoka, when this highly anticipated Star Wars TV duo landed on Disney Plus. But, by the time the credits had rolled on the latter in mid-2023, I think I’ve had my fill of Jedi-led stories in Lucasfilm’s iconic galaxy far, far away.
Sure, seeing these series’ Force-wielding protagonists clash with their Sith counterparts and other overtly villainous folks – amid the crackle and buzz of lightsabers – is always highly enjoyable. But the bits in between – channelling the Force and so on – have become rather stale in my eyes. Blah blah “concentrate”, blah blah “use your feelings”… you get the idea.
Even in Disney Plus shows that initially don’t revolve around the Jedi, such as The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, still tread old ground and eventually lead to the telekinetic hot-glow-stick wielders showing their faces. While I was entertained by the Kill Bill-style battle between Ahsoka and Morgan Elsbeth at the end of The Mandalorian, other appearances from the Jedi have either been a tad underwhelming or overbaked. Yes, I know ‘Baby Yoda’ is cute and all, but seeing Grogu train with a digitally recreated Luke Skywalker in season 2 of The Mandalorian (one of the best Disney Plus shows, in many people’s eyes) wasn’t the dose of nostalgia and role-reversal I think Disney hoped it would be.

Andor, though, showed me and many other Star Wars fans that you can make a great Star Wars show without a single Jedi appearance. In fact, I’d argue that Andor is the most interesting piece of Star Wars content that Disney has done to date – something that TechRadar’s senior entertainment reporter Tom Power also claimed in his Andor season 1 review.
Yes, I know it was a slow-burn to begin with, but the series’ determination to explore how planets and societies operate under the yolk of the Empire is fascinating, as is peeking behind the curtain of how the Imperials maintained galactic control (beyond their legions of Stormtroopers) across the cosmos post-Star Wars Episode III. Andor’s morally gray characters with a strange mix of selfless and selfish motivations, including its so-called heroes in the titular renegade, Luther Rael, and even Galactic Senator Mon Mothma, made for far more interesting viewing than the stereotypical good and bad guys that we’ve come to expect from those on the Light and Dark, and the Republic and Empire, sides of the divide.
Andor gave me all of that, as well as a planet-hopping yarn, complete with tense action, cool ships, great costume design, and even discussions over the foundations of society and rebellion to fuel one’s mind with discourse. Throw in its multi-genre appeal – Andor is filled with sci-fi drama, political thriller, and espionage-based action – and here is one of the more recent new Star Wars shows and movies that feels creatively unique among its peers.

So I want to see Lucasfilm lean more into other parts of the lived-in Star Wars universe, especially projects that ask audiences to question what we know of it. Okay, Star Wars: The Acolyte (out on June 4), is yet another tale based around the Jedi, which contradicts the points I’ve made. But, considering it’s set during the High Republic era – the first time we’ll see this period in a live-action production – and it’ll be similarly amoral to Andor with how it positions the too-comfortable Jedi and their Sith underdogs, it should deliver something befitting the kind of show that I want to see from the Disney subsidiary.
But that’s all I’d like to see. Not only do I want more Andor (thankfully, Andor season 2 is on the way), but how about a series that goes deeper into exploring what life is like from an Imperial point of view – the Star Wars: Tie Fighter videogame did this, as did other recent gaming titles like Star Wars: Battlefront II and Star Wars: Squadrons. Disney has a vein to tap into there.

Equally, I’d like to see a series that looks at Han Solo and Lando Calrissian. Okay, Solo: A Star Wars story already did this to some extent, but I feel there’s more to dig into there. Could something of this ilk happen in the apparently still-in-development Lando project, which may see Donald Glover play the roguish schemer once more? I live in hope.
Failing that: how about focusing on the adventures of explorers or traders adapting to the new Imperial rule, or ignoring it completely and pushing into the worlds on the far edges of the Outer Rim? We could bounce forward into the era of the recent Star Wars movies and examine how Benicio Del Toro’s DJ, the oddball slicer first and last seen in 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, came to be. Speaking of those movies, Finn was basically side lined after Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so I’d love for that wrong to be righted, and for us to get a look at how Finn became a Stormtrooper under the First Order. John Boyega, who played Finn in the sequel films, exclusively told TechRadar (in a chat with Tom Power) that he’s “open” to appearing in another Star Wars movie, so give him the tale that he deserves.
In summary: there’s a rich tapestry of untapped potential in the Star Wars franchise that Disney could explore without looking all doe-eyed at the Jedi – and I, for one, want them to actively lean into this more. Make it so, please.

Jawa Storage Wars could follow plucky Jawas in the bowels of a Sandcrawler as they try to trade all manner of items scraped and scrounged across Tatooine.
One Man and His Droid: a touching tale of a moisture farmer bonding with an errant astromech.
Keeping up with the Kashyyykians, a semi fly-on-the-wall docuseries following socialite Wookiees as they go about the high life on their homeworld of Kashyyyk, compete with jewel-encrusted bowcasters.
Similarly, The Real Housewives of Coruscant could explore the glitz and glamour of the spouses of high-ranking senators in the capital of the Republic/Empire, complete with high-drama and high-fashion inspiration from Padmé Amidala.
Below Deck: A Star Wars Documentary would be a reality show-meets-documentary following the life of select crew members of a Super Star Destroyer, where we see junior officer Bendak Willough-tee get in a steamy relationship with TIE pilot Courtnita Skipponch.
Deal or No Deal: Tatooine Edition sees new contestants try and get a good deal out of Jabba the Hutt – only those that fail to strike said deal get fed to a Rancor.
Cantina Nightmares where galactic chef Goron Rancorsey tries to save falling cantinas around the Outer Rim, all the while yelling “you’re serving f***king blue milk!”
Frozen Planet could feature Droidvid Clatteborough, renowned nature documentary presenter and protocol droid with dulcet tones, exploring life on Hoth while dodging predatory wampas.
There are some ideas for you there, Disney. Matt and I are happy to consult – just please cut the amount of Jedi shows and realize that not everything has to happen on Tatooine and/or feature those crowd-pleasing but overused Jedi, you hear?
Sometimes, a weekend comes along that’s so stacked with new movies and TV shows to stream, we have a hard time narrowing down our list of recommendations to seven entries.
This weekend is one of those weekends, so rather than tease our chosen titles in today’s introduction, we thought we’d rattle off the four series that aren’t included in the below list, since they’re still worthy of your time: the third seasons of Clarkson’s Farm, Hacks and Welcome to Wrexham are all now streaming on Prime Video, Max and Disney Plus, respectively, while new period drama Shardlake comes to Hulu.
Below, we’ve rounded up seven more of the biggest new movies and TV shows to stream on Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and more this weekend.
The Idea of You (Prime Video)
If the surprising box office success of Anyone But You taught us anything, it’s that audiences will turn out for a good old fashioned rom-com, and Amazon will be hoping that its latest star-studded melodrama, The Idea of You, proves similarly popular.
Adapted from Robinne Lee’s 2017 novel of the same name by The Big Sick director Michael Showalter, this Prime Video-exclusive movie stars Anne Hathaway as a 40-year-old divorcée who strikes up an unconventional romance with the lead singer of a popular boy band (Nicholas Galitzine).
Reid Scott and Annie Mumolo also star in The Idea of You, which critics have described as a “plane movie par excellence” and “a damn sight better than what we’ve been forced to get used to” in the rom-com genre. For the right viewer, then, this could be one of the best Prime Video movies of the year.

A Man in Full (Netflix)
Jeff Daniels has made a habit of leading well-made TV dramas in recent years, and the veteran actor returns to do just that in A Man in Full, which is now streaming on Netflix.
This six-episode adaptation of the 1998 novel by Tom Wolfe centers on the fictional Charlie Croker (Daniels), a charismatic Atlanta real estate mogul who is suddenly faced with the prospect of bankruptcy and the collapse of his empire. Diane Lane, William Jackson Harper, Lucy Liu and Bill Camp also star; the latter reuniting with Daniels after starring alongside him in 2019’s The Looming Tower series.
Suffice to say, A Man in Full has left critics divided, with some calling it a “skin-crawling Trump satire” and others a “substandard Succession.” We haven’t seen the series yet, so we’ll leave you to decide whether it’s one of the best Netflix shows, or another Netflix flop.

Unfrosted (Netflix)
Sticking with the best streaming service, Netflix also plays host to Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial feature debut, Unfrosted, this weekend.
This surprisingly star-studded biopic-of-sorts follows the real-life race between rival breakfast cereal companies to create a revolutionary toaster pastry product (read: a Pop Tart) in the early 1960s. Seinfeld himself leads the cast alongside – wait for it – Melissa McCarthy, Hugh Grant, James Marsden, Amy Schumer, Christian Slater, Daniel Levy, Bill Burr and many more.
Depending on who you read, Unfrosted is either a “deliciously silly, spoofy tale” or “one of the decade’s worst movies,” so don’t expect to see this one make our list of the best Netflix movies any time soon.

The Veil (Hulu)
Less than two years after leading The Handmaid’s Tale to its fifth and final season, Elizabeth Moss returns to Hulu to front FX’s new spy thriller The Veil.
This six-episode series – which comes from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight – follows a globe-trotting MI6 agent (Moss) whose mission to extract and interrogate a suspected ISIS leader (Yumna Marwan) catches the attention of French and American intelligence services.
Josh Charles and Dali Benssalah also star in The Veil, which critics have described as a “compelling spy yarn with a few loose threads.” UK viewers will likely have to wait for this one to debut on Disney Plus later in the year.

Star Wars: Tales of the Empire (Disney Plus)
Disney’s follow-up to 2022’s Tales of the Jedi series comes to Disney Plus in its entirety this Saturday (or Star Warsday to those who celebrate).
Star Wars: Tales of the Empire charts the rise of the fearsome Galactic Empire through the eyes of two very different warriors: The Mandalorian‘s Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) and The Clone Wars‘ Barriss Offee (Meredith Salenger).
Grand Admiral Thrawn, The Grand Inquisitor and General Grievous are all confirmed to appear across the series’ six episodes, so Tales of the Empire sounds like a must-watch for nostalgia-loving Star Wars fans

The Tattooist of Auschwitz (Peacock)
If you’re in the mood for a heavy-hitting wartime drama, a small screen adaptation of Heather Morris’ best-selling novel The Tattooist of Auschwitz is now streaming on Peacock.
This co-production between Peacock in the US and Sky in the UK chronicles the real-life romance between Auschwitz prisoners Lali (Jonah Hauer-King) and Gita Sokolov (Anna Próchniak), who strike up a lifelong romance in the most inhuman of circumstances.
Harvey Keitel and Melanie Lynskey also star in The Tattooist of Auschwitz, which critics have described as “well made, well acted, well intentioned” but ultimately “grotesque”, for reasons we’re sure you can guess.

The Contestant (Hulu)
The third of three (three!) Hulu-based recommendations to feature on this week’s list is new documentary film The Contestant.
This feature-length production tells the hard-to-believe story of Tomoaki Hamatsu, a Japanese man who unwittingly became the star of a Truman Show-style Japanese reality show in which contestants are left alone in a room for months and forced to obtain food and clothing through sweepstakes.
Critics have described The Contestant as “mind-blowing” and “something [that’s] halfway between sensationalist exposé and intimate confessional,” so it sounds like a must-watch for fans of revelatory documentaries.

Fallout season 2 is officially in development. That’s right, the hit Amazon series has been renewed for a second season after the *ahem* rad reception season 1 was met with. So, gear up for more outlandishly funny moments, bizarre retrofuturistic adventuring, captivating melodrama, and a smorgasbord of Easter eggs from Bethesda’s iconic video game universe (which the TV show is also set in).
With the popular Prime Video show’s next entry still in early development, it’ll be some time before we learn anything official about its release date, get news about its cast and plot, and see any footage. Still, based on what happened in season 1 of Amazon’s Fallout TV show, we can speculate on all of the above and more in this guide.

Fallout season 2 doesn’t have a release date. It was only announced by Amazon on April 18 and, as it’s in early development, a launch date won’t be revealed for a long time.
It’s difficult to pinpoint when we might see one of the best Prime Video shows make its irradiated return, too, as we’ve no idea how far along in the development process it is. In short: it could be 18 months to two years before the first live-action story set in Bethesda’s satirical post-apocalyptic game series re-emerges from its vault.

Amazon hasn’t announced which cast members will be back in Fallout season 2. Based on season 1’s ending, however, we’re confident that the following will return:

Michael Esper and Sarita Choudhury might reprise their roles as Vault-Tec employee Bud Askins and the New California Republic (NCR) commander Lee Moldaver, too. We’d be surprised if season 2 doesn’t deliver more flashback sequences that predate the Great War and/or explore more about the NCR’s creation and role in founding Shady Sands. If it does, Askins and Moldaver will certainly be back.
There are also bound to be new additions to the show’s acting roster. Speaking to IGN, season 1 director and executive producer Jonathan Nolan revealed that Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad, Westworld) has already inquired about featuring in season 2, so don’t be surprised if more famous faces cameo in the same manner as Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows) in season 1.
Fallout season 2 plot speculation

There isn’t a plot synopsis for Fallout season 2 yet. Nobody – outside of the main creative team, anyway – knows what it’ll entail, but we can speculate on where the series might go, based on season 1’s numerous unresolved plot threads and what some of its crew have teased in interviews.
In non-spoiler terms, Nolan exclusively told TechRadar (ahead of season 1’s release) that the Fallout crew have “had some really cool conversations” about season 2, some of which could impact future games in the series that Bethesda creates (remember, everything that happens in Fallout‘s TV show is canon in the wider franchise). He declined to elaborate further when pressed for more details, though. Now that the first season is out in full, however, we have a better idea of what might lie in store for Lucy and company very soon.

One of the most important storylines, if not the most, that needs to be built upon involves Hank, Lucy and Norm’s dad.
In the season 1 finale, Hank was revealed as one of Vault-Tec’s junior employees who was placed in cryosleep, alongside the likes of Betty Pearson, inside Vault 31 before The Great War. He was then reawakened over 200 years later to help Vault-Tec try to tyrannically rule the post-apocalyptic United States. He was also responsible for The Fall of Shady Sands – a cataclysmic event that saw a nuclear bomb dropped on the town that the NCR operated out of. As an aside, the NCR were almost wiped from existence during their showdown with the Brotherhood in episode 8 but, speaking to IGN, Howard teased: “I don’t think you’ve heard the last of the NCR.”
But we digress. Lucy’s mom, and Hank’s wife, Rose was turned into a ghoul as a result of radiation poisoning from said warhead (Lucy kills her to end Rose’s misery in episode 8, by the way), while Maximus’ entire family was killed during the initial blast. Oh, and Hank was also the Vault-Tec employee who was one of the biggest fans of Cooper Howard – i.e. the A-list actor that The Ghoul used to be. In short: Hank has strong ties to all three of the series’ main characters.

After those revelations came to light, Hank – who was accidentally freed by Maximus before Lucy could tell Maximus about Hank’s villainous past – managed to escape in a stolen T60 power armor suit. He suffered a facial injury after being shot by The Ghoul, though, so he’ll have the physical scars – as well as the mental and emotional ones – to show for his misdemeanors.
Okay, why is all of this so important? The final few minutes of episode 8 revealed that Lucy and The Ghoul had formed an uneasy alliance to track Hank down. For her part, Lucy will want more answers about her dad’s involvement with Vault-Tec and his familial betrayal.
As for the harrowing, eye-opening, and world-shattering journey Lucy has gone on throughout season 1, it’s clear it’s left its mark on Fallout‘s primary protagonist – Purnell telling GQ that “I don’t know who she’s gonna be in season 2, [but] this is what happens when you break the unbreakable. I don’t know who she’s about to become. How Lucy feels about her hope… she recognises that something is irreversibly lost, or broken, inside her. Maybe she still does maintain it in season 2, but it will never be the same. It can’t.”
And what does Purnell want to tackle in Lucy’s season 2 arc? “I’d like to see her become her own person,” she tells GQ. “I’d like to see her form some opinions that feel truly and wholly hers, and not a product of her upbringing, or a product of Vault-Tec. I think part of her being a good person is just truly her, and I think that is just who she is. I don’t know if that’s going to stay or going to go, I’d be down to play it either way. But I’d also like to see her go, like, ‘No, I don’t like this food,’ or ‘No, I don’t think what you…’ A little tiny rebellion, maybe.”

Meanwhile, The Ghoul needs to find Hank to learn which vault his wife and daughter – Barb and Janey – are in. As Barb revealed at various points in season 1, the high-ranking Vault-Tec staff member secured a place in one of the evil corporation’s most prestigious underground bunkers for her family, Cooper included. Of course, the implied breakdown of Cooper and Barb’s marriage – something we should learn more about in season 2 – suggests that Cooper’s reserved place was taken away following their divorce, forcing him to survive as an irradiated ghoul on the surface. It’s possible Barb and Janey survived The Great War if they were cryogenically frozen in Vault 31 or another subterranean location and Hank may know where.

All of this points to Hank being the show’s primary antagonist moving forward, right? Not necessarily. Speaking to IGN, Nolan simply teased “you’ll have to stay tuned” to find out if this is the case.
So, who else could it be? The season 1 finale revealed that Barb was also involved in concocting the idea of The Great War in a bid to line Vault-Tec’s pockets and ensure it was well positioned to laud it over the US after the nuclear apocalypse.
She was joined in that pivotal meeting by other scheming executives looking to make a quick buck, including RobCo owner Robert House (played by Rafi Silver). In Bethesda title Fallout: New Vegas, this Machiavellian individual (known as Mr. House in New Vegas) is the enigmatic ruler of the titular city. And, with Fallout season 2 seemingly heading to a dilapidated version of New Vegas – it’s the location we see Hank look out onto in the season 1 finale’s mid-credits scene – there’s the potential for Mr. House to take a leading, villainous role in the show’s sophomore outing.
Speaking to GQ, co-showrunner Graham Wagner didn’t exactly shoot down that possibility, saying: “We certainly intend to expand on that [the Vault-Tec meeting and its nefarious characters]. That is an interesting moment to be double-clicked, as they say, in a future story.”
The New Vegas tease isn’t the only thing that delighted long-time fans in the mid-credits scene. We also got a glimpse of a Deathclaw skull, one of the most formidable monsters in the Fallout universe. Speaking to The Wrap post-season 1 release, Wagner confirmed Deathclaws would appear in season 2, adding: “It’s such a monumental piece, we want to save something for season 2 to be able to do it properly, not just added onto the massive world building we had to do already in season 1. So season 2, we’re very excited to finally tackle one of the most iconic elements of the games.”
Let’s not forget Maximus’ role in proceedings heading into season 2. With his fellow Brotherhood of Steel, erm, brothers believing that he was the one who killed Moldaver – his friend Dane convinces them that this was the case – it seems he’s set for a more influential role in the group’s hierarchy. But, with Maximus having fallen for Lucy during the pair’s excursions across the Wasteland, coupled with his worldview being altered by all of those season 1 revelations, we expect Maximus’ allegiances to be torn between staying with the Brotherhood and wanting to find and be with Lucy.
There are plenty of other subplots that require further examination. One of the more prominent ones concerns how Norm will free himself after being trapped in Vault 31. As Arias told Inverse, Norm is “going to have to use every ounce of intellect he has to get himself out of that one”, which hints at a protracted jailbreak for Lucy’s inquisitive brother.

Other notable storylines include some of Vault 33’s inhabitants resettling in the deserted Vault 32 (and whether Chet will finally reveal what actually happened there), how Moldaver survived for over 200 years without turning into a ghoul like Cooper (Choudhury declined to give away any answers when asked by Inverse), and how and when Cooper and Barb’s marriage ended. The answers to this trio lie in flashbacks to a time before The Great War and what Vault-Tec’s overarching goal is, so we can expect more glimpses into the past when season 2 rolls around.
In the present, we might catch up with Thaddeus, who believes he’s starting to become a ghoul after he consumed a mysterious serum from the cryptic Snake Oil Salesman that healed his mangled foot and saved him from a near-death experience with an arrow-based trap. We may get more details on cold fusion, a new non-Vault-Tec technological advancement that might offer hope of a brighter future for the surface-dwelling common folk. Oh, and let’s not forget Lucy and Maximus’ burgeoning romance, which is on ice for the time being, given the pair have temporarily gone their separate ways – Nolan teasing to IGN that “we’ll see if they can find each other again”.
Then there are subplots that were cut from season 1. During their chat with GQ, Wagner and fellow co-showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet revealed that “a cannibal encounter” was dropped for runtime purposes, but the pair are confident “we’ll find a place in season two for some of those, because some of them were really fun, and it was tragic to lose them.”
It goes without saying, but we’ll also get plenty more Easter eggs and references to the dense Fallout universe that Bethesda created in its game series. There were tons of those in season 1, so don’t be surprised if its follow-up is similarly stuffed with callbacks to the show’s action role-playing game siblings.

Nobody knows. Right now, Nolan and Co are focused on developing Fallout season 2 and that’s likely to be the case until its development is complete.
Chatting to IGN, Nolan said of plans for future seasons: “I think you have a responsibility when you undertake one of these journeys to have a bit of a plan. You’d also be foolish to not account for the things along the way… but you also want to be flexible enough and adaptable enough that you’re not locked into that. And for the obvious reason that especially these days with these shows, you want to make every season as great as you can.
“If you’re lucky enough to go again, you make a follow-up, you leave enough material and you have enough of a master plan from the beginning that you know what the next step would be, and we have been talking for some time now about the next steps for Fallout, and we’re very excited about it.”
Given the richness of Bethesda’s Fallout franchise, there’s plenty more for Prime Video’s adaptation to explore and expand on from the games. If the show doesn’t wrap up its main characters’ stories by the end of season 2, it could continue to follow them in a third installment. Alternatively, season 3 could be set in an entirely new location (not unlike the games) and introduce us to new characters to not only fall in love with but also see how they navigate a post-nuclear war-torn Earth and potentially unearth new revelations about Vault-Tec. Think along the lines of an anthology series like True Detective (now available on Max), or Fargo and American Horror Story (Hulu and Disney Plus), and you’ll get the gist.
Whatever direction Amazon’s Fallout TV series goes in, then, there’s plenty more material – old and new – to mine and explore respectively. War never changes – and neither will our adoration for this show if it continues to be as good as season 1 was. Roll on season 2 and more besides, we say.
