The Fallout TV series is V.A.T.S. (a very awesome TV show)

[ad_1]

Fallout’s transition to TV starts with a bang (or three depending on how you’re counting). But even after the show emerges from the vault, the hits keep coming. That’s because unlike a lot of other video game adaptations that receive a thin veneer designed to appeal to fans of the source material, the essence of Fallout runs so deep throughout this series it could weather an atomic blast. Its characters are magnetic and its visuals are downright impressive. But most importantly, just like HBO’s The Last of Us, Fallout is more than just a video game adaptation. It’s a really good show in its own right – an apocalyptically good one at that.

The first thing that stands out about the show is just how good it looks. Every set and costume is packed with detail. The clean blues and yellow of vaultsuits are the perfect counterpoint to the dilapidated buildings and shaggy clothes of surface dwellers, which look so grimy you can almost feel the rads coming out of your screen. Meanwhile, Fallout’s Power Armor might be some of the best-looking live-action mech-suits this side of Pacific Rim. Locations are also incredibly diverse and fleshed out while still paying homage to the franchise that inspired them. The settlement of Filly looks almost exactly how I imagine Megaton might appear in real life, you know, aside from having a massive bomb in the middle of town. The show’s audio is also a treat, right down to the crunchy sounds of analog electronics and all the rockin’ oldies that wafting in the background (including an obligatory playing of the Inkspots’s “I don’t want to set the world on fire”).

The Power Armor in the Fallout TV series looks incredibly good. The Power Armor in the Fallout TV series looks incredibly good.

I really liked how all the show’s easter eggs and references to the video game never felt forced. Iconic gadgets like the Pipboy help build the world while simultaneously pushing the plot forward. Even its cinematography makes callbacks to the game with slow-mo that evokes the V.A.T.S. mechanic during firefights. And all the little critters Fallout fans love and hate like rad roaches, irradiated bears and a very good canine companion make appearances that feel right at home.

Of course, all this would simply be window dressing without characters that bring the world to life. And once again the show doesn’t disappoint. As a vault dweller, Lucy MacLean (played Ella Purnelle) is the perfect foil to ease us into the world of Fallout. As she explores and adapts to the surface, we get to meet an incredible cast of characters who highlight the struggles and revel in the weirdness of a post-doomsday world. I also need to call out the casting of Walton Goggins as the Ghoul, which feels like an especially enlightened choice. This man was made for this role, and even considering some of his previous appearances in Justified and The Hateful Eight, this might be his most engaging performance yet.

The most impressive thing about the Fallout show is how it balances several different stories with grace and intrigue. So often when you have branching plotlines, one arc drags while the others shine. But in Fallout, they are woven together so well that even if one scene goes long, the show on the whole never bores. Now I will admit that those new to the franchise may need to be a bit more patient, as Maximus’ arc and the story surrounding the Brotherhood of Steel takes some time to get rolling.

Perhaps the biggest issue with Fallout is its brutality. This is not a series for the faint of heart. Warning: There is some animal cruelty and there’s so much gore that a regular bullet wound seems tame in comparison. It’s also important to mention that the jump from pixels to live action adds even more impact to this. But coming from a franchise that’s reveled in crass and crudeness since the beginning, it would feel weird any other way.

As a fan of the franchise, there’s always a little trepidation when a game tests the waters of a new medium. But Fallout has absolutely nailed it. And looking back, it probably shouldn’t have been a surprise, because unlike Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat whose stories always felt like afterthoughts, it was the world and the characters of Fallout that kept people coming back to the wasteland. While the game may have provided the blueprint to make the show a success, this adaptation can stand on its own.

The Fallout series is available to stream today starting at 9PM ET on Amazon Prime Video.

Apple Watch Series 9 Now Available on Apple’s Refurbished Store in Select Countries

[ad_1]

The Apple Watch Series 9 is now available in Apple’s refurbished store in Australia and New Zealand for the first time since the device launched in September. These are the first countries where Apple offers refurbished Series 9 models.

Apple Watch Series 9
Availability will likely extend to Japan and the UK soon, as Apple recently added a grayed-out Apple Watch Series 9 search filter to its refurbished store in those countries. The search filter is only visible on these pages in a desktop browser, and it is possible that Apple will remove them following our report, as it has done in the past.

Apple has yet to begin selling refurbished Apple Watch Ultra 2 models anywhere.

It is unclear if and when refurbished Series 9 and Ultra 2 models will be available in the U.S. due to Apple’s legal battle with health company Masimo. The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) last year banned Apple from importing and selling Apple Watch models with a functioning Blood Oxygen app after it ruled that the feature infringed on Masimo’s patents. Apple recently appealed the decision in a 916-page court filing.

Apple could opt to sell refurbished Series 9 and Ultra 2 models in the U.S. with the Blood Oxygen app deactivated, as it is currently doing for brand new models. Apple would be able to reactivate the app with a watchOS update if its appeal is successful, or if it eventually reaches a settlement with Masimo to end the dispute.

Since the ITC’s ruling applies to the U.S. only, the Blood Oxygen app is still functional on new and refurbished Apple Watch models sold in all other countries.

Fallout TV show creator hints at ‘really cool’ season 2 plans as rumors swirl over Prime Video series return

[ad_1]

Fallout TV show creator Jonathan Nolan says that “really cool conversations” have taken place about a possible second season amid reports that a follow-up is already in development.

Speaking exclusively to TechRadar, Nolan – who also directed the Amazon series’ first three episodes – suggested that Prime Video’s Fallout TV show wouldn’t end after a single season. However, when I pressed him for more details on what a second season could be about, Nolan was hesitant to confirm anything official, choosing instead to tentatively tease that more stories might be in the pipeline.

The forthcoming Prime Video series is set in the same universe as the Fallout games developed by Bethesda. Each title in the studio’s ever-expanding dystopian action-RPG franchise is based in a different location, with new characters to interact with, monsters to fight, settlements to visit, and missions to complete. In that sense, Fallout is an anthology-style game series that puts players in the shoes of a new protagonist with each new release.

The Ghoul sits slumped in a chair with his cowboy hat lowered over his face in the Fallout TV show

Sitting around waiting for that Fallout season 2 renewal like… (Image credit: Amazon Studios)

Fallout‘s TV adaptation, then, seems tailormade to adopt a compendium-like form of seasonal storytelling akin to Bethesda’s ‘new game, new location’ mantra. And, with popular and award-winning duo Fargo (one of the best Hulu shows) and True Detective (one of the best Max shows) recently leading the anthology TV show charge, there’s clearly a market for this kind of TV-based narrative format. So, is that a creative path that Nolan would look to walk? Or would he prefer to continue the journeys of season 1’s protagonists?

iRobot says its new robot vacuum and mop outperforms 600 Series Roombas for $275

[ad_1]

Robot vacuums are handy little devices that can help folks save a ton of time and energy. However, some of the more well-known options are often a bit pricey, especially when a mopping function comes into the mix. As it happens, iRobot has revealed a relatively budget-friendly 2-in-1 robot vacuum and mop. It says the $275 Roomba Combo Essential actually outperforms the Roomba 600 Series thanks to 20 times more suction power, and the addition of a mop and smart navigation.

According to iRobot, this model offers 25 percent better performance at picking up dirt from hard floors than the Roomba 600 Series. It’s also said to have a longer battery life at up to 120 minutes, the ability to clean in neat rows, customizable suction and liquid settings, Clean Map reports and intelligent settings such as suggested cleaning schedules.

Although you can set up cleanings in advance, you can start one at any time with an Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant voice command. Alternatively, you can press the Clean button or tap a button in the iRobot Home app to put the device to work right away.

iRobot

The device has a four-stage cleaning system that includes adjustable suction and liquid settings, a v-shaped multi-surface brush, an edge-sweeping brush and a pump-fed microfiber mop pad. For vacuum-only operation (i.e if you’re looking to remove dirt from a rug), you’ll need to remove the mop pad first. That adds a little bit of friction to using this model. There’s another trade-off in that this isn’t a self-emptying Roomba — you’ll need to empty out the dirt storage bin manually more often.

Still, this seems like a solid Roomba at an eye-catching price. It’s available in Europe, the Middle East and Africa now, and iRobot will start selling it in the US on April 7 and Canada on April 12. The Roomba Combo Essential will reach Asia Pacific markets later this month. Folks in the US can trade in a Roomba 600 Series for a $50 credit toward a Roomba Combo Essential

In addition, iRobot is rolling out a model called the Roomba Vac Essential in North America. It has the same smart functions and other similar features as the Combo Essential, but there’s no mop. That robot vacuum will cost $250 and it’ll land in the US on April 7 and Canada on April 12.

Meanwhile, iRobot says it has reached a new milestone. Since debuting the Roomba in 2002, the company has sold more than 50 million robots.

After five years of receiving the latest software updates, Apple Watch Series 3 lost support upon the release of watchOS 9 in 2022. Last year’s watchOS 10 update was compatible with all of the same Apple Watch models as watchOS 9, but a new rumor claims that watchOS 11 will drop support for the oldest currently supported Apple smartwatch: the Apple Watch Series 4. The full device compatibility list for watchOS 11 is said to be as follows:

  • Apple Watch SE (second generation, 2022)
  • Apple Watch Ultra (first generation, 2022)
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2 (2023)

The Apple Watch Series 4 debuted alongside the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max in 2018, introducing the device’s first ever redesign, a larger display, double the amount of storage, Fall Detection, and the ability to take an ECG.

Last year, iOS 17 dropped support for the iPhone X, but iOS 18 is rumored to support all of the same models as its predecessor. Apple is expected to preview watchOS 11, iOS 18, and its other next-generation software updates at WWDC on June 10. The updates will likely release to the public in the fall.

Sugar detective series trailer offers clues to Colin Farrell’s story |

[ad_1]

A new trailer Apple TV+ dropped Sunday for upcoming LA-noir detective series Sugar, starring Irish actor Colin Farrell, asks an important question: Who is John Sugar? Well, apparently he’s a tough dude who “does one thing and one thing only: Find the missing.”

A legendary film producer played by veteran actor James Cromwell says the line. And having cast members like Cromwell adds some serious gravitas to a moody and engrossing-looking series (as if Farrell was not enough).

You can see that trailer and the previous one below. They should whet your appetite for some good ol’ fashioned-yet-contemporary LA crime noir. It comes up from time to time to great acclaim (see LA Confidential among others).

Check out 2 Sugar detective series trailers before Colin Farrell’s show premieres Friday, March 5

The trailers for Sugar below don’t disappoint when it comes to note-perfect film noir dialogue, like you’d see in some James Cagney tough-guy detective series from the 1940s.

“Finding people that are lost — that part of the job I like,” Farrell’s narration says as he drives his convertible around Los Angeles after midight. “I’m really good at what I do. I don’t like hurting people [intercut brutal fight scenes]. But maybe I’ve been here too long. Tip the world on its side and everything loose lands in Los Angeles.”

Here’s how Apple TV+ describes the show:

Sugar is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture and television history: the private detective story. Academy Award nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.

In addition to Farrell (The Batman, The Banshees of Iinisheran) and Cromwell (Succession, LA Confidential), the series also stars Kirby (The Sandman), Amy Ryan (The Wire), Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad), Dennis Boutsikaris (Better Call Saul), Nate Corddry (Mindhunter), Sydney Chandler (Don’t Worry Darling) and Alex Hernandez (Invasion).

Colin Farrell has had a long career, with roles in independent films and blockbusters, including The Batman. He received two Golden Globes plus a nomination for an Oscar for best man in The Banshees of Inisherin.

Sugar was created by Mark Protosevich, who worked on The Cell, I Am Legend and Thor. He executive produces along with Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg from Genre Films (Invasion). Oscar-nominee Fernando Meirelles (City of God, Constant Gardner, Two Popes) directs Sugar.

Watch Sugar on Apple TV+ April 5

Sugar debuts with its first two episodes of eight on Friday, April 5, 2024 on Apple TV+. A new episode follows on Fridays.

The service is available by subscription for $9.99 with a seven-day free trial. You can also get it via any tier of the Apple One subscription bundle. For a limited time, customers who purchase and activate a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac or iPod touch can enjoy three months of Apple TV+ for free.

After launching in November 2019, “Apple TV+ became the first all-original streaming service to launch around the world, and has premiered more original hits and received more award recognitions faster than any other streaming service. To date, Apple Original films, documentaries and series have been honored with 471 wins and 2,090 award nominations and counting,” the service said.

In addition to award-winning movies and TV shows (including breakout soccer comedy Ted Lasso), Apple TV+ offers a variety of documentaries, dramas, comedies, kids shows and more.

One UI 6.1 update rolling out for the Galaxy Tab S9 series

[ad_1]

Samsung is rolling out One UI 6.1 to the Galaxy Tab S9 series. The Galaxy Tab S9, Galaxy Tab S9+, and Tab S9 Ultra are the only tablets included in the initial rollout, with no word from Samsung on when other tablets will get the update.

They are also the only tablets that the company says will receive the Galaxy AI features through the One UI 6.1 update. Samsung is reviewing the possibility of bringing Galaxy AI to older flagships, but right now, only flagship phones and tablets launched in 2023 are on the eligibility list.

Europe is the first region to get the Galaxy Tab S9 update. Only the 5G variants are being updated at this time, and it could be a few days before the Wi-Fi variants join the party. However, in some regions, the Wi-Fi variants may receive the update before the 5G variants.

Once the One UI 6.1 update reaches your country/region, you will be able to download it by tapping the Download and install option in the tablet’s Settings » Software update menu. There’s also the option to upgrade your tablet using firmware available in the SamMobile firmware archive, though you will need a Windows PC for this.

Galaxy Tab S9 One UI 6.1 update

One UI 6.1 is already coming later than we had hoped, but depending on your region, you can expect to wait a few more days for it to arrive on your Tab S9, S9+, or S9 Ultra as these updates are rolled out in phases and gradually expand to all regions.

While we haven’t tested One UI 6.1 on a Galaxy Tab S9 at the time of publication, our video showing One UI 6.1 running on a Galaxy Z Fold 5 should give you a good idea of what to expect. You can also read the full One UI 6.1 changelog here to learn about all of its features and improvements.
