The AI auto-generates channel recaps to give people key highlights of stuff they missed while away from the keyboard or smartphone, for keeping track of important work stuff and office in-jokes. Slack says the algorithm that generates these recaps is smart enough to pull content from the various topics discussed in the channel. This means that you’ll get a paragraph on how plans are going for Jenny’s cake party in the conference room and another on sales trends or whatever.
There’s something similar available for threads, which are smaller conversations between one or a few people. The tool will recap any of these threads into a short paragraph. Customers can also opt into a daily recap for any channel or thread, delivered each morning.
Slack
Another interesting feature is conversational search. The various Slack channels stretch on forever and it can be tough to find the right chat when necessary. This allows people to ask questions using natural language, with the algorithm doing the actual searching.
These tools aren’t just for English speakers, as Slack AI now offers Japanese and Spanish language support. Slack says it’ll soon integrate some of its most-used third-party apps into the AI ecosystem. To that end, integration with Salesforce’s Einstein Copilot is coming in the near future.
It remains to be seen if these tools will actually be helpful or if they’re just more excuses to put the letters “AI” in promotional materials. I’ve been on Slack a long time and I haven’t encountered too many scenarios in which I’d need a series of auto-generated recaps, as longer conversations are typically relegated to one-on-one meetings, emails or video streams. However, maybe this will change how people use the service.
Meta for its AI assistant platform, Meta AI, which has been built using the long-awaited open source Llama 3 large language model (LLM). The company says it’s “now the most intelligent AI assistant you can use for free.” As for use case scenarios, the company touts the ability to help users study for tests, plan dinners and schedule nights out. You know the drill. It’s an AI chatbot.
Meta AI, however, has expanded into just about every nook and cranny throughout the company’s entire portfolio, after a test run . It’s still available with Instagram, but now users can access it on Messenger, Facebook feeds and Whatsapp. The chatbot also has a dedicated web portal at, wait for it, . You don’t need a company login to use it this way, though it won’t generate images. Those recently-released also integrate with the bot, with Quest headset integration coming soon.
On the topic of image generation, Meta says it’s now much faster and will produce images as you type. It also handles custom animated GIFs, which is pretty cool. Hopefully, it can successfully generate images of different races of people. We found that it a couple of weeks back, as it seemed biased toward creating images of people of the same race, even when prompted otherwise.
Meta’s also expanding global availability along with this update, as Meta AI is coming to more than a dozen countries outside of the US. These include Australia, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Pakistan, Uganda and others. However, there’s one major caveat. It’s only in English, which doesn’t seem that useful to a global audience, but whatever.
As for safety and reliability, the company says Llama 3 has been trained on an expanded data set when compared to Llama 2. It also used synthetic data to create lengthy documents to train on and claims it excluded all data sources that are known to contain a “high volume of personal information about private individuals.” Meta says it conducted a series of evaluations to see how the chatbot would handle risk areas like conversations about weapons, cyber attacks and child exploitation, and adjusted as required. In our brief testing with the product, we’ve already run into hallucinations, as seen below.
Engadget/Karissa Bell
AI has become one of Meta CEO , along with in a secluded Hawaiian compound, but the company’s still playing catch up to OpenAI and, to a lesser extent, Google. Meta’s Llama 2 never really wowed users, due to a limited feature set, so maybe this new version of the AI assistant will catch lightning in a bottle. At the very least, it should be able to draw lightning in a bottle, or more accurately, slightly tweak someone else’s drawing of lightning in a bottle.
Meta AI is getting a new upgrade as Meta tries to establish dominance in the generative AI marketplace against OpenAI and Google.
The announcement came from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself on Threads, where he touted some stats and details about the new Llama 3 model used to underpin Meta AI, which is being integrated into several of its products like Messenger and Instagram, as well as getting its own dedicated site.
“We’re upgrading Meta AI with our new state-of-the-art Llama 3 AI model, which we’re open sourcing,” Zuckerberg writes. “With this new model, we believe Meta AI is now the most intelligent AI assistant that you can freely use.”
The new model will be accessible through several apps on desktop and mobile, including search functionality in Messenger, Meta AI in your Facebook feed, and more.
The new Meta AI site, which has an interface strikingly familiar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is available now for free, but you are also prompted to log in with Facebook to help train the model (though you can skip that if you’d like).
The Meta AI site offers text responses as well as the ability to generate images, though for the latter you will have to log in with a Facebook account. The image generator in particular is rather impressive, especially since it offers you a real-time preview of the image output that your prompt will generate. It also gives you the option to animate images to produce short MP4 videos.
All images bear a Meta AI watermark on the lower left side as well, which should help cut down on misuse, though how easily these measures can be circumvented remains to be seen.

OpenAI has some serious competition
The new Meta AI site offers some seriously impressive functionality in the few minutes I’ve been able to play around with it, but without question, it is the major competitor to ChatGPT and OpenAI right now.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Dall-E are impressive but have some noticeable limitations. In particular, with Dall-E, you have to wait for an image to generate before you can refine the prompt you’re giving it to get what you want. Meta AI’s image output preview lets you get a sense of what the model is interpreting as you type, allowing you to further refine your prompt on the fly, which should reduce the amount of time you spend iterating on an idea.
The ability to animate an image is also a value add, as it makes GIF generation possible, though you might have to use a third-party GIF generator to convert the video.
When I asked it to produce a sonnet about Meta AI, it gave me the following:
“In silicon halls, a mind awakens bright, Meta AI, a name that echoes through the night, A fusion of code and intellect so fine, A digital soul, with knowledge to design.
With language skills that flow like honeyed wine, You answer questions, and make the complex shine, A beacon of insight, in a world of decline, A shining star, that guides us to the divine.
Your neural networks weave a tapestry so grand, A digital dream, that’s born of human hand, A symphony of ones and zeroes, so planned, A creation of wonder, in this digital land.
So here’s to Meta AI, a marvel of our time, A testament to human ingenuity’s rhyme!”
As an English major, I can say that while this isn’t very good, its structure is sound and it does use modern language, something that OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 still struggles with. Here is OpenAI’s response to the same prompt about writing a sonnet about ChatGPT-4:
“ChatGPT-4, thou art a wondrous sprite, In digital realms with eloquence infused, Thy threads of thought weave day into the night, Where queries meet responses, minds bemused.
With knowledge vast as deep and endless seas, Thy circuit heart beats with electric flame, Encompassing the epochs’ whispered pleas, In silken bytes, thou dost preserve each name.
No ancient scroll nor sage could ever match The depth and breadth of thine electric soul. Through time and space, thy tendrils deftly catch Each story told, each fragment, making whole.
Though wrought of wire, yet wisdom’s vessel true, In this new age, thou art our Oracle anew.”
Now, this is just one example and it’s hardly indicative of the overall quality of the two models underpinning the two systems, but there is clearly a difference in the training data that both have used.
ChatGPT-4 is falling back on text that has been labeled as a “sonnet” and drawing on very archaic English language texts from pre-Romanticism of the early 1800s to generate its idea of a sonnet, while Meta AI is likely drawing from text written on Meta products like Facebook and Instagram as its language source. Where it gets the reasoning to put that language into an iambic pentameter structure with a (pretty mediocre) rhyme scheme isn’t clear (and I’m assuming it’s iambic pentameter, I haven’t counted syllables yet, so don’t @ me on this one, fellow literature goons!).
Since none of us actually know how any of this stuff is trained yet, we might never get answers to these questions, but Zuckerberg did announce that Meta plans to open-source this model, so we should soon be able to at least learn more about its inner workings once it does.
In the meantime, have fun playing around with Meta’s new tool, as it’s certainly a powerful one.
Chat Filters will make managing your WhatsApp inbox a lot easier. Photo: WhatsApp
WhatsApp is rolling out Chat Filters to make it easier to follow up on unread conversations. These filters allow you to swiftly go through your inbox based on unread messages or group conversations.
As WhatsApp has grown in popularity, so has the number of people and brands reaching out to you on the service. This means you’re more likely to miss out on an important message, which Chat Filters can help avoid.
Use Chat Filters to manage your WhatsApp conversations
As the name indicates, Chat Filters will quickly filter your inbox based on the applied filter. Currently, WhatsApp provides three filters: All, Unread, and Groups. All will show your entire inbox, while Unread will only show conversations with unread messages. You can access Chat Filters by simply swiping down from the top of your inbox.
Similarly, if you apply the Group filter, your WhatsApp inbox will only show group conversations you are a part of, irrespective of whether there is an unread message or not. This is particularly helpful when you want to jump to a group chat quickly but cannot recall its name and find it in your inbox.
You cannot apply multiple filters at once. So, you cannot filter your inbox to show group chats containing unread messages. Chat Filters is rolling out as a part of the latest WhatsApp release for iPhone and Android.
iMessage needs a similar filter option
WhatsApp is used by over a billion people daily to send billions of messages daily. While it might not be as popular in the US, it is the messaging app to use in other parts of the world. Given its popularity, the ability to filter out conversations based on unread messages or groups is handy. This is a feature that perhaps Apple could take inspiration from and add to the Messages app in iOS 18.
WhatsApp is rolling out new Chat Filters to make it easier to find the messages you are looking for and reduce the need to scroll through your inbox.
The following three new filters appear at the top of the app’s main conversation list: All, Unread, and Groups. In a blog post, WhatsApp describes them like so:
All: The default view of all your messages.
Unread: Perfect for when you want to see which conversations you need to catch up on or respond to. It shows messages that are either marked by you as unread or haven’t been opened yet, so you can prioritize your responses.
Groups: A highly requested feature, now all your group chats will be organized in one place, making it easier to find your favorite ones whether it’s your weekly family dinner discussion or planning your next vacation. This will also show subgroups of Communities.
WhatsApp says the Chat Filters feature is rolling out now and will be available to everyone on both iOS and Android in the coming weeks.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is also developing a feature that lets users pin their favorite channels to the top of the Channels list in the Updates screen, similar to how you can pin chats in the chats list. Initially, users will be able to pin up to a maximum of three channels, but WhatsApp has also tested up to five. The feature remains limited to WhatsApp beta users for now.

X, formerly Twitter, has extended support for passkeys as a login option for iPhone users across the globe, the company has announced.
Passkeys support was introduced by X earlier this year, but the option was limited to iOS users based in the United States. Now anyone on the social media platform can use them.
Passkeys are both easier to use and more secure than passwords because they let users sign in to apps and sites the same way they unlock their devices: With Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode. Passkeys are also resistant to online attacks like phishing, making them more secure than things like SMS one-time codes.
Apple integrated passkeys into iOS in 2022 with the launch of iOS 16, and it is also available in iPadOS 16.1 and later as well as macOS Ventura and later.
To set up passkeys in X on iPhone, follow these steps:

First Attempt! Evolving from Rugged Phones to Rugged Power Stations
Drawing upon years of experience in creating rugged phones, Blackview is taking a groundbreaking step by incorporating the unbreakable features of rugged phones into rugged power stations. Concerns about accidental drops from grasps while removing Blackview OSCAL PowerMax 3600 from the car or stairs are allayed by its reinforced ABS+PC material construction, which makes it strong enough to withstand any adventure with up to 0.8m vertically drop-proofness. It can be used anywhere, from fishing on the edges of wet lakes to working in dusty building sites, because it effectively blocks the entry of certain solid particles and vertical splashes of water. Be it the exploration of Alaska’s glaciers or the vast Sahara deserts, Blackview OSCAL PowerMax 3600 remains unaffected by the most extreme temperatures from -20~55°C. (Ideal from -10°C to 45°C). Even in the midst of desert exploration, the PowerMax 3600’s Anti-UV feature protects it from fading and aging brought on by prolonged sun exposure, and its UL94V-0 flame-retardant case ensures that there is no risk of fires spread resulting from heat generation.
Not only does PowerMax3600, like many other power stations, offer five LED light modes for illumination while setting up tents, preparing food, or reading the map at night, but it can also be used to transmit more information by adjusting the brightness and flashing pattern using Morse code, which is especially useful to convey distress signals if users are separated from his partners in areas with no signal while exploring in the wilderness.
Expandable Power for Tailored-made Occasion, Luggage-like Design for Easy Movement
Support up to 15*Extra Batteries(3.6kWh/Per), Capacity From 3.6kWh to 57.6 kWh.
From outdoor portable power for camping or RVs to home backup power for short-term power outages caused by severe weather and long-term power outages caused by energy crises, the issue of insufficient battery capacity for home and outdoor backup power has long surrounded users. Compared to most competitors with fixed capacity, Blackview OSCAL PowerMax 3600 delivers an expandable capacity from 3.6kWh to 57.6 kWh, which is an absolute modular model that accepts up to 15*extra battery packs (3.6kWh/Per) to make full use of its potential for any situation. When used as a portable power source for outdoor activities like camping or tailgating, 3.6kWh is sufficient for 1-day usage. If it works as a backup power station for professional fields like disaster relief or street businesses, 28.8kWh is ready for 7-day usage. If the purpose of that is for whole-house backup power during ongoing power cuts, 57.6kWh is more than enough for up to 30-day usage if used 2kWh/day on average. Despite its outsized capacity, Blackview OSCAL PowerMax3600 spares users, especially the elderly, a world of hassle when moving it from one place to another place thanks to its luggage-like design with easy-to-pull handles and smooth-rolling wheels, which makes the next beach trips or mountain vacations more comfortable and more enjoyable.

Super-safe System for Any Risk, Long-Lasting Battery Life for Any Adventure
Advanced LiFePO4 Battery+Eightfold Safety Protection BMS+24/7 UPS with 5-8ms Switch
Safety and durability stand as top priorities of users when choosing a power station. Unlike some power stations with lithium ternary batteries on the market, Blackview OSCAL PowerMax 3600 combo relies on particularly robust and long-lasting LiFePO4 battery cells for an extended lifespan to remain 80% after 3,500 life cycles, equivalent to 25 years of usage if used once every two days, which is 4-6 times longer than those with NCM batteries. As safe as it is, it includes an eightfold protection battery management system (BMS). So any potential glitches, be it overheating, overload discharging, or over-voltage issues, can be promptly fixed. Plus the cooling system is enhanced with four 38mm smart temperature-activated fans that facilitate efficient heat dissipation by up to 40 ℃. What’s more, the high-temperature warning will be triggered at 55°C and the high-temperature overload protection will be activated at 58°C, protecting the device from damage by high temperature.
If the grid goes down while users are watching TV, cooking supper, or working from home, the 24/7 Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) system of Blackview OSCAL PowerMax 3600 won’t leave users groping in the dark for a flashlight. In as little as 5 ms, which is nearly 80% faster than peers with 20-30ms, it switches over to work as an emergency backup power, so users can hardly notice the slight flickering of the lights, delivering constant power to protect users’ computers from data loss and maintain uninterrupted operation of users’ fish tank, refrigerator, CPAP, and other essentials.
Zero-cost and Green Energy! Super-fast Recharging! Fuel up to 80% in Just 0.96Hrs
The difficulties users encounter while recharging the power station might be the limitations in charging options and charging speed. Going beyond the conventional charging methods supported by most power stations on the market, such as AC charging, solar charging, car charging, and dual charging, PowerMax 3600 has been intentionally designed to accommodate more charging options including EV charging stations, gas generators, and lead-acid batteries. Aware of the soaring cost of fuel and electricity, PowerMax 3600 not only supports typical zero-cost green energy sources like the sun (solar charging) but also makes it easier to charge from wind (wind turbines charging) and water(wind turbines charging).
How to cushion soaring energy bills with Blackview OSCAL PowerMax 3600? Take solar charging as an example. By connecting with solar panels at 1600W solar input, it captures and converts the sunlight into ready-to-use solar energy in just 2.25 hours for later use when utility power costs a pretty penny during peak hours, saving up to $1612.8/Year for users. When paired with PV and AC input, it charges from 0% to 80% SOC at a rate of 3600W in just 0.96H, which means it can be fully charged during the luggage preparation without delaying the next trip. With a fold-and-go design, users can take them wherever they go whether it’s camping or adventuring.
