Apple’s AirPods Max are $100 off and close to a record low

[ad_1]

Most headphones don’t last forever, especially wireless ones as the battery life will inevitably dwindle. If you’re ready for an upgrade and you’re willing to splash a little cash, are worth considering. Those headphones are currently on sale at Amazon. The price has , putting it at just $20 above the lowest price we’ve seen for the cans to date. The offer applies to all colorways.

Apple

Apple’s AirPods Max overear headphones are currently $100 off.

$450 at Amazon

The price was one of our major drawbacks when back in 2020 so the sale mitigates that a bit. We gave the headphones a score of 84, with the audio quality and aesthetics proving to be major plus points.

We felt that the AirPods Max had great balanced sound and capable active noise cancellation (ANC). With both spatial audio and ANC enabled, we had no trouble getting 20 hours of use out of the headphones on a single charge, just as Apple pledged.

Given that it’s been a few years since the AirPods Max debuted and the fact Apple is in the midst of switching out the Lightning charging port for a USB-C one across all of its devices, a new version of the headphones may be on the way. That may result in Apple bringing the price of the original model down even further to clear out the stock. That said, if you don’t want to wait, this is a solid deal on a good set of headphones, particularly if you’re already entrenched in the Apple ecosystem.

Great Barrier Reef is experiencing its worst mass bleaching event on record

Australia’s iconic Great Barrier Reef is experiencing its fifth mass bleaching event in eight years — and this one is the worst on record. A report by the Australian government’s reef management agency analysed aerial surveys of 1,080 of the reef’s estimated 3,000 individual reefs, and some in-water surveys. Corals ‘bleach’ when stressed by warming waters brought on by climate change, expelling their colourful resident zooxanthellae. Marine biologist Terry Hughes says the solution to the bleaching problem is clear: “Reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Full stop.”

The laboratory stalwart Caenorhabditis elegans forgets new information a couple of hours after learning it — unless it is quickly put on ice. Worms trained to dislike a smell retained their aversion while chilled for many hours. Worms given lithium also hung onto their memories for longer than normal. “Why do they forget, when the worms are perfectly capable of maintaining the memories longer?” ponders geneticist and study co-author Oded Rechavi. “Perhaps there’s a reason for holding memories for the particular duration that they do.”

Hopes that the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) would finally settle the debate over how fast the Universe is expanding were dashed after two teams that used JWST data calculated different values. Observations of the current Universe typically find the expansion rate — the Hubble constant — to be about 9% faster than predictions based on early-Universe data. Multiple techniques will need to agree before the disparity is resolved, says astronomer Wendy Freedman.

The top ten papers most-cited in policy documents worldwide are dominated by economics research: the number one most-referenced, with around 1,300 citations, is a 2003 study about the impact of trade. A list that excludes economics is topped by a 1990 book on the evolution of institutions by Nobel laureate Elinor Ostrom and a 1997 paper about Earth’s natural capital. Paediatrician Peter Gluckman, former chief science adviser to New Zealand’s prime minister, is not surprised that the list includes broad-brush papers rather than those reporting incremental advances. “The thing that worries me most is the age of the papers that are involved,” he says — more recent work on climate change, food security and similar areas hasn’t made it onto the list.

A coalition of scientists has published a declaration that there is “a realistic possibility of conscious experience” in all vertebrates and in many invertebrates, such as octopuses and insects. The group focuses on sentience — an aspect of consciousness often defined as being able to have subjective experiences — pointing to research suggesting that octopuses feel pain and that bees show play behaviour. “When there is a realistic possibility of conscious experience in an animal, it is irresponsible to ignore that possibility in decisions affecting that animal,” says the declaration.

Some people experience intense visual imagery, called hyperphantasia, that means they can replay memories or imagine scenes that are as vivid as real life. Once thought to be rare, research now suggests as many as 1 in 30 people have such vivid imaginations. At the other end of the spectrum are people with ‘aphantasia’, who have no visual imagery at all. Science is just catching up with this neurodiversity and how it influences memory, childhood, and even mental health.

Physicists are finally getting to grips with the mysterious strong force, which binds quarks into protons and neutrons and holds the nucleus together. The physicists who made the first measurements in the range of distances where the strong force becomes especially strong and difficult to calculate, and came up with theoretical predictions to match, describe their breakthrough. We at last have the ability to calculate aspects of quantum chromodynamics — the fiendishly complex theory that describes how the force works — from first principles, write Alexandre Deur, Stanley Brodsky and Craig Roberts. It could lead to progress on a unifying theory of the universe and help us discover how many dimensions exist.

As CERN, Europe’s particle-physics laboratory, celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, researchers argue that its impact goes beyond its 23 member states and discoveries in particle physics. Advances made at CERN, including the development of the World Wide Web, have affected society as a whole. “I think it is a great model for international collaboration,” says physicist Rainer Wallny. “It has a lot of facilities available that are beyond the scope of individual user groups. Record Store Day 2024 – the full list, plus five essential albums to pick up

[ad_1]

Record Store Day 2024 is one the most anticipated events for any music fan, and there’s no doubt that eager vinyl record collectors have been preparing for this day since the full Record Store Day list was dropped in February.

The event takes place on Saturday April 20 and will see music fans around the world flocking to their local record shops to score exclusive pressings and region-specific LPs. And with Discogs’ partnership with Record Store Day, you’ll have two chances to partake in this year’s event.

Despite the queen of vinyl variants, Taylor Swift, not making an appearance in this year’s list, there’s a plethora of other albums, soundtracks, and live recordings that will be available as limited editions. But a word of caution; most record stores work on a first come first serve basis, so it’s wise to check your local store’s opening times and plan to queue accordingly.

To celebrate one of the most exciting days in music, I’ve compiled a list of five albums from this year’s Record Store Day list that are essential for any music lover’s library. Not only are these albums great from beginning to end, but they’ve each had a significant impact on fans and culture alike…

Rumours was the second album I bought on vinyl after Lorde’s Pure Heroine, not because I was a huge Fleetwood Mac fan at the time, but because it’s an album I knew was quintessential to any collection.

This album was conceived at a time when the band’s members couldn’t bear to be in the same room as each other. Love complications between Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham served as one of the driving forces behind the album’s brutally honest lyricism in songs like Dreams and Second Hand News, alongside John and Christine McVie’s divorce.

Its raw emotion is the reason why it’s still loved by music fans nearly 50 years after its release, and at Record Store Day 2024, it’s being released once again but in picture disc format.

Dawn FM was one of the most memorable albums of 2022, but it was The Weeknd’s sold-out After Hours til Dawn stadium tour that showed his powerhouse status.

Live albums can be hit or miss, depending on how the artist plays around with the arrangement of their studio songs – but Live at SoFi Stadium is a live album I find myself reverting back to now and then. Not only is the setlist packed with catchy oldies like The Hills and Wicked Games, but its songs like Sacrifice that show how hard a song can hit when played live. That’s all down to its responsive bass and elongated intro that perfectly builds suspension before the beat drops.

The oldest entry in our list comes from Black Sabbath and their second studio album Paranoid, which is regarded as one of the most influential albums in heavy metal. And it’s back for Record Store Day 2024, over 50 years since its release on a vibrant pink splatter vinyl.

Much like Rumours, Black Sabbath’s Paranoid has cemented itself as a vinyl record staple but for its own reasons – one being that it set the gold standard for the heavy metal genre. It houses several of Black Sabbath’s most credited singles from the title track, to Iron Man and War Pigs, which still make for great additions to blockbuster movie soundtracks.

While I lean more towards Ware’s neo-disco and funk records What’s Your Pleasure? (2020) and That! Feels Good (2023), those albums would not exist if it weren’t for her early work.

The production on Tough Love is very early-to-mid 2010s coded, but the subtlety of funky bass guitars and string accompaniments hint at the direction Jessie Ware has been headed all this time. For Record Store Day 2024, Ware brings you the 10th anniversary edition of the album, featuring 2 LPs pressed on solid white vinyl with bonus tracks.

2023 didn’t live up to the albums that 2022 gave us, but Gorillaz’s eighth studio album Cracker Island was one of my saving graces that year – after Lana Del Rey and Caroline Polacheck, of course.

Cracker Island is very much an ‘LA-themed’ album, with topics such as technology, influencer culture, and the internet building the foundation of the album’s message. But it’s the album’s features that make it a stand-out record, one that invites the musical influences of funkier artists like Thundercat and Tame Impala, not to forget the legendary Stevie Nicks on one of my favorite songs, Oil.

The deluxe edition of Cracker Island is out this Record Store Day, with six additional tracks and alternative cover art pressed on pink and magenta vinyl.

Looking to scour the full list of special edition pressings for Record Store Day 2024? You can find it below. There are hundreds of offerings to leaf through, including cassettes and picture discs alongside vinyl. So click the ‘read more’ button and use the alphabetical ordering to see what’s on offer from your favorite artist…

Apple’s 10th-gen iPad returns to a record low of $349

[ad_1]

While the arrival of new iPad Pro and Air models seems imminent, rumor has it we won’t be getting a classic update until next year. If you have no interest in waiting and want to explore some of the best iPads on the market, then the Apple 10th-generation iPad’s current sale is for you. The 64GB Wi-Fi model is back down to its record-low price of $349 from $449 — a 22 percent cut. The discounted iPad is available right away in the blue version or for an extra dollar when applying a $79 coupon to the silver model.

Apple

Apple released its 10th-gen iPad in 2022 and garnered an 85 in our review. It offered a new look and features, with new design elements such as a 10.9-inch screen and a Touch ID moving to the lock button. It also offers a liquid retina display with a 2360x1640p resolution.

The 10th-gen iPad comes with an A14 chip — a step up from the ninth-gen’s A13 but still not as strong as the M1 and M2 that power the iPad Air and Pro. It comes with a solid battery that lasts 11 hours and 45 minutes if you play iTunes movies on rotation and almost 10 hours when you’re working with an attached keyboard.
