HomePod and HomePod Mini Launch in Malaysia and Thailand on May 10

Apple today announced that its HomePod mini and second-generation HomePod will go on sale in Thailand and Malaysia from next week.

Apple is accepting pre-orders through its online stores in the two countries from today, with the speakers shipping and going on sale in Apple’s regional retail stores on May 10.

The ‌HomePod mini‌ was initially released by Apple in October 2020 across the U.S. and a handful of other countries. Since launch, the speaker has not seen significant hardware revisions, though Apple did introduce new colors in November 2021 and activated the devices’ temperature and humidity sensors via software updates earlier this year. The introduction of the ‌HomePod mini‌ in two more countries makes the prospect of a second-generation model being released anytime soon pretty unlikely.

In 2021, Apple phased out the original full-size ‌HomePod‌, but it launched a second-generation version in January. This new ‌HomePod‌ retains a design similar to its predecessor but includes an enlarged backlit touch interface and several other enhancements. Both the new ‌HomePod‌ and ‌HomePod mini‌ are Siri-based smart speakers, and come with Matter compatibility and support for stereo pairing.

Chicago area artist and Redditor Tom Bacon (u/tombaconart) showcased the colorful, art-infused, dual-display workstation in a post entitled, “Updated Mac mini setup.”

His M1 Mac mini drives a pair of LG 4K displays, one oriented in landscape mode (horizontal) and one in portrait mode (vertical).

“I like my knickknacks,” he said of the army of doodads and figurines on the shelves when someone complimented the rig’s lived-in look compared to staged ultra-mininalist setups. “I actually do get a lot of work done here, as long as a cat isn’t sitting on my keyboard.”

And while he keeps it functional, he doesn’t mind a bit of mess.

“Yeah I like having some easy to reach items on the riser,” he said. “I don’t mind a little clutter, just need to avoid letting things pile up when I get busy. Art and productivity focus.”

We noticed when a commenter asked Bacon about his iPad stand on the right in the photo, because it’s the first we’ve seen of it. It’s a Lab22 Infinity Adjust Stand for 12.9-inch iPad. Microsoft’s lightweight Phi-3 Mini model can run on smartphones

Microsoft has unveiled its latest light AI model called the Phi-3 Mini designed to run on smartphones and other local devices, it revealed in a new research paper. Trained on 3.8 billion parameters, it’s the first of three small Phi-3 language models the company will release in the near future. The aim is to provide a cheaper alternative to cloud-powered LLMs, allowing smaller organizations to adopt AI.

According to Microsoft, the new model handily outperforms its previous Phi-2 small model and is on par with larger models like Llama 2. In fact, the company says Phi-3 Mini provides responses close to the level of a model 10 times its size.

“The innovation lies entirely in our dataset for training,” according to the research paper. That dataset is based on the Phi-2 model, but uses “heavily filtered web data and synthetic data,” the team states. In fact, a separate LLM was used to do both of those chores, effectively creating new data that allows the smaller language model to be more efficient. The team was supposedly inspired by children’s books that use simpler language to get across complex topics, according to The Verge.

While it still can’t produce the results of cloud-powered LLMs, Phi-3 Mini can outperform Phi-2 and other small language models (Mistral, Gemma, Llama-3-In) in tasks ranging from math to programming to academic tests. At the same time, it runs on devices as simple as smartphones, with no internet connection required.

Its main limitation is breadth of “factual knowledge” due to the smaller dataset size — hence why it doesn’t perform well in the “TriviaQA” test. Still, it should be good for models like that only require smallish internal data sets. That could allow companies that can’t afford cloud-connected LLMs to jump into AI, Microsoft hopes.

Phi-3 Mini is now available on Azure, Hugging Face and Ollama. Microsoft is next set to release Phi-3 Small and Phi-3 Medium with significantly higher capabilities (7 billion and 14 billion parameters, respectively).

Mac mini might skip Apple M3 processor in favor of M4

There will never be a version of the Mac mini with the Apple M3 processor, according to a reliable tipster. Instead, the inexpensive desktop will wait for the next-generation chip.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that the wait supposedly won’t be terribly long.

Mac mini could pass over M3 in favor of M4

The Apple M3 launched in autumn 2023 in MacBook Pro and iMac, and came to MacBook Air early this year. It’s still rolling out, with a new, more powerful iteration of the chip supposedly headed for the Mac Studio desktop in mid-year.

But the replacement M4 is already on the horizon. And the next Mac mini will be on hold until that chip arrives, reports Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman in the paywalled section of the new edition of his Power On newsletter.

The M4 iMac mini will arrive at the end of 2024 or early 2025, and there simply isn’t time to squeeze an M3 version in before that launch, according to Gurman. Which means the M2 version will stay on shelves for longer.

When the next-generation Mac mini arrives, it’ll supposedly be available in both M4 and M4 Pro variants.

More about the M2 Mac mini

This compact desktop is the least expensive Mac — the base model is only $599 — and it’s aimed at budget-conscious consumers. It’s really not surprising that it’s not always kept updated with the latest-and-greatest processor.

That said, the M2 Mac mini is hardly underpowered. With an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, the machine can easily handle a typical consumer’s browsing and light photo/video editing needs.

Those who need a significant step up in performance can get the version with the M2 Pro chip. This model ships with a 10-core CPU, a 16-core GPU, and 16GB of unified system memory. This variant also packs four Thunderbolt 4 ports alongside two USB-A ports so users can hook up as many high-bandwidth accessories as needed, including more than two monitors.

Apple Likely Planning to Skip M3 Mac Mini for M4 Refresh in Late 2024

Apple is likely to skip an M3 version of the Mac mini in favor of a bigger update with M4 chips toward the end of the year, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

In the latest edition of his “Power On” newsletter, Gurman explained that he does not expect Apple to refresh the ‌Mac mini‌ with M3 chips. Apple last updated the ‌Mac mini‌ with the M2 and ‌M2‌ Pro chips in January 2023. Other new features included two extra Thunderbolt 4 ports and an HDMI 2.1 port for ‌M2‌ Pro configurations, Wi-Fi 6E support with a compatible router, and Bluetooth 5.3.

Gurman previously said that Apple is planning to release new ‌Mac mini‌ models with M4 and M4 Pro chips “between the end of 2024 and early 2025.” Now, he has clarified that with new Mac minis arriving as soon as the end of the year, there is not sufficient “room for M3 models to come out before then, so it’s probably safe to say that those Mac desktops will skip the M3 generation.”

Such a move would not be unprecedented since the iMac skipped the ‌M2‌ chip entirely, holding off until a bigger performance bump with the M3 chip late last year. With the M4 chip series, the ‌Mac mini‌ should get a significant CPU performance improvement compared to the existing models with the ‌M2‌ series. The M4 chips are also rumored to have a faster Neural Engine for artificial intelligence tasks.
