Refreshed Mercedes-Benz EQS gets massive 55-inch Hyperscreen and an equally monstrous 511-mile range

[ad_1]

Mercedes-Benz has revealed an upgraded version of its luxury electric sedan, with more tech, an increased range and the reintroduction of the upright bonnet star all featuring in the upcoming EQS.

The model, which has been under scrutiny for its shocking residual values, has been given the once-over to ensure it remains competitive, with the 55-inch MBUX Hyperscreen now coming as standard across the range.

This gargantuan infotainment system sees three displays merge seamless across the dash, giving the interior the look and feel of a NASA control room. On the outside, there’s a darker grille cover and reworked headlights, as well as the upright star bonnet badge, which was famous for going missing on classic Mercedes vehicles of the 70s and 80s.

Updated Mercedes-Benz EQS

Perhaps more important to potential owners is the fact that new batteries have been fitted, which are almost 10kWh up on the previous 108.4kWh packs, delivering an additional 51-miles of range. Couple this with some aerodynamic tweaks to the bodywork and Merc reckons you can achieve more than 500 miles before it requires plugging in. That’s almost 100 miles more than the top spec Tesla Model S.

AT&T Notifying Customers About Massive Data Leak

[ad_1]

AT&T this week is letting customers and former customers know about a major data leak, and it is sending out emails and resetting passcodes to prevent unauthorized account access.

ATT Banner
7.6 million customers and 65.4 million former customers have had their passcodes stolen and have had sensitive data leaked. AT&T claims that there was no unauthorized access to its systems resulting in the theft of the data set, with the information obtained several years ago.

Back in 2021, a hacking group said that it had stolen information on 70 million AT&T customers. AT&T at the time said that it had not suffered a breach, and the company still insists that the data did not come from its systems. Customer information leaked includes names, addresses, birth dates, AT&T account numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, and social security numbers, along with passcodes.

The data was not made public until March 2024, but now that it is out in the wild, AT&T has initiated passcode resets and says that it is working with external cybersecurity experts to further analyze the situation.

The company says leaked data does not include financial information or call history, and it will be providing complimentary identity theft and credit monitoring services for those who had their personal information compromised.

AT&T has determined that AT&T data-specific fields were contained in a data set released on the dark web. While AT&T has made this determination, it is not yet known whether the data in those fields originated from AT&T or one of its vendors.

With respect to the balance of the data set, which includes personal information such as social security numbers, the source of the data is still being assessed. Based on our preliminary analysis, the data set appears to be from 2019 or earlier, impacting approximately 7.6 million current AT&T account holders and 65.4 million former account holders. Currently, AT&T does not have evidence of unauthorized access to its systems resulting in theft of the data set.

Impacted current and former customers will be receiving a letter or an email from AT&T.

Galaxy A55’s awesome design is let down by massive bezels

[ad_1]

In the modern Galaxy Ax lineup, which started with the Galaxy A50 back in 2019, the Galaxy A55’s premium design is unmatched by anything that came before.

With the Galaxy A54, Samsung added a glass back, and with the Galaxy A55, the company added a metal frame to the mix. Combine that with the upgrade from Gorilla Glass 5 to Gorilla Glass Victus+, and you get an in-hand feel and build quality that’s much closer to those of Samsung’s flagship phones.

But the Galaxy A55 is a mid-range phone at the end of the day, and that means Samsung has left out a few upgrades fans would have liked to see. The worst offender in that regard is the size of the bezels around the display.

Slimmer bezels would have made Galaxy A55 design perfect

As you can see in the picture below, the bezels on the Galaxy A55 are massive. They are as big as the bezels on the Galaxy A54 and a stark contrast to the symmetrical and ultra-thin bezels of the Galaxy S24, S24+, and S4 Ultra. They are also bigger than those on some considerably cheaper Chinese smartphones that launched a year or more ago.

Galaxy A55 bezels

Is this a knock against the phone and a reason why you shouldn’t buy it? Not really. The Galaxy A55’s design is excellent overall for a mid-range Samsung phone. It also boasts features such as IP67 water and dust resistance, which you won’t find on most competing devices from other manufacturers (even those that are water and dust-resistant tend to offer weaker protection).

Still, the large bezels are disappointing and hold the A55’s design back from true greatness. Samsung will probably address the bezel size next year as it’s the only part of the design that hasn’t been brought up to modern standards, but we would have prefered seeing the upgrade this year itself.

Massive public-health experiment sends vaccination rates soaring

[ad_1]

Deploying mobile COVID-19 vaccination clinics in rural areas of Sierra Leone increased vaccination rates sharply, according to an ambitious experiment involving 150 villages1. The effort is an outlier: many more studies examine vaccine hesitancy and misinformation than focus on vaccine access.

“The investigators made a great effort to bring vaccines to remote communities,” says Jean Nachega, an infectious-disease epidemiologist at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, who has highlighted challenges in COVID-19 vaccine access in Africa2. The model could be transferred easily to other countries, he adds, calling the campaign “very laudable”.

The results, published on 13 March in Nature, highlight the importance of delivering vaccines, as well as other essential medical treatments and supplies, to rural, less affluent areas, says study co-author Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak, an economist at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.

Vaccine disparity

By November 2023, more than 80% of people in high-income countries had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, compared with roughly one-third of the population of Africa.

In addition to vaccine supply issues, another possible reason for this disparity is that nearly 60% of people in sub-Saharan Africa live in rural areas, where medical care can be inaccessible. For example, when COVID-19 vaccines first became available, people in rural Sierra Leone, in western Africa, needed to make, on average, a seven-hour round trip to receive the jab, at a total cost that could exceed a week’s wages, Mobarak says.

To address this problem, Mobarak and his colleagues designed a system to make vaccines accessible to these rural communities. They selected 150 villages in Sierra Leone and randomly assigned 100 of them to host a two- or three-day vaccination clinic; the remaining 50 served as a control group. By the end of the clinics, 30% of people in the communities that had hosted one had been vaccinated against COVID-19, compared with about 6% of people in control villages.

Last-mile delivery

The researchers found that the clinics’ success varied by region; after the clinics were held, the vaccination rate was at least 65% in some communities and as low as 0% in others. Mobarak says that future research will need to identify the source of this variation, and the extent to which vaccine hesitancy might have played a part.

Hesitancy is important to understand, but it shouldn’t preclude vaccination campaigns or more research on vaccine supply and access, Mobarak says. “When you’re starting with a baseline vaccination rate of essentially zero, our research shows that the most cost-effective thing to do is just to show up,” he says.

The clinics cost about US$33 per person vaccinated. The researchers now plan to test the same strategy in other countries, and to deliver routine childhood vaccines and medical supplies, such as oral rehydration packets, that would further reduce costs per person treated.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 could be a massive upgrade in almost every way

[ad_1]

While a lot of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 leaks suggest Samsung’s next big-screen foldable won’t be much of an upgrade, it’s sounding like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 could be a huge departure from its predecessor, with upgrades to almost every element.

Numerous rumors have suggested this, with the latest being a detailed specs list from @TheGalox_ on X (via Phandroid). Most of these specs are things we’ve heard before, but hearing them from another source increases the likelihood that they’re accurate.
