Voices from Lithuania

In May, Lithuania marks 20 years of European Union membership. The Baltic country is keen to develop its global presence in the life-science and biotechnology sectors by retaining home-grown talent, persuading scientists who are working abroad to return to the country and attracting researchers from other nations. Nature spoke to three scientists who have chosen to develop their careers in Lithuania. Here, Nature highlights developments in the scientific landscape of the country.

Many of those involved in Lithuanian research say that the Baltic country’s scientific ambitions stem from a desire to make its mark after becoming the first of 15 republics to break away from the Soviet Union in 1990, a year before the formal collapse of the union.

Researchers point to a culture of collaboration, rather than one of competition, in which scientists are keen to help each other. This is made easier by the country’s small size — it has a population of 2.8 million.

This year, Lithuania marks a more recent anniversary. Twenty years ago, it joined the European Union, a move that further enhanced its collaborative credentials and ambitions in the life-science and biotechnology sectors (see ‘Landmarks in Lithuanian science’).

In 2020, for example, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) chose Vilnius University’s Life Science Center, which houses three research institutes (biochemistry, biotechnology and biosciences), to partner with it to develop genome-editing technologies. The partnership is one of seven created around the world since 2019 — the collaborations typically last between five and nine years.

Last November, Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nausėda announced that Bio City, Europe’s largest biotechnology hub, will be built in Vilnius. The move forms part of a €7-billion (US$7.5-billion) investment led by the Northway group, which comprises 17 companies in the fields of medicine, health care, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and investment, and is supported by private investors and loans.

Lithuania’s ambitions in the life sciences and biotechnology have not gone unnoticed. The intergovernmental Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) maps different countries’ biotech research-and-development investment as a percentage of total business enterprise research and development. According to this measure, Lithuania comes third, behind Belgium and Switzerland, based on 2022 data. The data exclude the United Kingdom and China.

On occasions, however, Lithuania’s strong history in biotechnology and the life sciences has been overlooked. The most notable example was when the work of Lithuanian biochemist Virginijus Šikšnys on CRISPR–Cas9 was rejected by the journal Cell.

Six years after the rejection, Šikšnys gained recognition for his work when he won a share of the prestigious $1-million Kalvi Prize in Nanoscience, alongside biochemists Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna, who are widely credited with co-inventing the gene-editing technology.

A steady return

Lithuania, however, has also faced an exodus of talent. The population decreased from 3.7 million in 1990 to 2.8 million in 2023. But this trend might be changing, owing to Lithuanians returning home from abroad and other nationals moving to the country. Since 2019, migration has exceeded emigration every year, with 87,367 people coming into the country in 2022, but only 15,270 leaving, according to the Lithuanian State Data Agency. Since 2017, the number of Lithuanians returning to their home country has risen steadily from 10,155 that year to 23,712 in 2021. There was a dip in 2022, possibly owing to the proximity of the country to the war in Ukraine.

According to the non-profit organization Invest Lithuania, which aims to attract foreign investment into the country, 57.5% of 25–34-year-olds have received tertiary education. This is among the highest of in EU countries and well above the EU average (41.2%). And of all students who began doctoral studies in 2021, 28% were in natural sciences, mathematics or statistics.

Android 15 could make landscape mode much better for phones

[ad_1]

Android 15 has introduced several improvements, including NFC-based charging, better Bluetooth Auracast support, and default note-taking and wallet app options. However, Google isn’t done adding new features to Android 15 yet, and more improvements are being revealed as we approach Google I/O 2024, where the upcoming version of Android will likely be fully revealed.

Android 15 could allow lockscreen, notifications, and quick setting toggles to be better in landscape mode

It has been revealed by Mishaal Rahman (on Android Authority) that Android 15 will allow the lockscreen, notifications, and quick setting toggles to take better advantage of the screen real estate in landscape mode.

On Android 14, when you turn your phone in landscape orientation, notifications appear from the middle, leaving a lot of unused space on either side of the screen. The same is true for quick setting toggles, which appear too big in the landscape mode. This is true for both stock Android 14 and One UI 6.0. However, things will become much better with Android 15.

As you can see in the screenshots above and below, when you turn a phone running Android 15 in landscape mode, the lock screen shows the clock widget on the left, leaving empty space for notifications on the right. When you try to unlock the phone, the keypad appears on the right, while the entered PIN appears on the left, making great use of the screen.

After unlocking the phone, when you swipe down from the top of the screen, both quick setting toggles and notifications appear simultaneously, each occupying one side of the screen. This doesn’t leave any wasted space like Android 14 does. Apparently, this new design has been under development since September 2023 in Android 14 QPR1 Beta 1. However, the development is still unfinished, and a few bugs remain.

Google is expected to finish developing the new landscape UI for the home screen, lockscreen, notifications, and quick setting toggles by the time it announces Android 15 at Google I/O 2024 on May 14, 2024. These improvements may make it to One UI 7.0, making Galaxy phones more usable in landscape mode.

As for the improvements Samsung made to One UI mid-cycle with the One UI 6.1 update, you can watch our in-depth video below.

New iPad Pro Again Rumored to Feature Landscape Front-Facing Camera

[ad_1]

The next-generation iPad Pro will feature a landscape-oriented front-facing camera for the first time, according to the Apple leaker known as “Instant Digital.”

iPad Pro 2024 Landscape Camera Feature
Instant Digital reiterated the design change earlier today on Weibo with a simple accompanying 2D image. The post reveals that the entire TrueDepth camera array will move to the right side of the device, while the microphone will remain on the top and simply be centered.

Currently, the front-facing camera of both the iPad Air and ‌iPad Pro‌ resides on the top of the device, which means that the camera is positioned to the left when the device is being used in landscape, such as with a Magic Keyboard. Apple relocated the front-facing camera of the 10th-generation ‌iPad‌ to the side of the device to provide a better experience in landscape and the company has not launched a new ‌iPad‌ since then.

In January, code discovered in iOS 17.4 suggested the next ‌iPad Pro‌’s TrueDepth camera array would be moved to the side of the device. “During ‌Face ID‌ setup, ‌iPad‌ needs to be in landscape with the camera at the top of the screen,” the code read.

Earlier this month, Instant Digital suggested that the switch to a landscape front-facing camera could also be made on the next-generation iPad Air. How Apple will achieve this switch to a landscape camera on the new ‌iPad‌ models is unclear, since the second-generation Apple Pencil connects to both the ‌iPad Air‌ and ‌iPad Pro‌ using an inductive magnetic charger located where it seems the camera will need to move to. Both the new ‌iPad Air‌ and ‌iPad Pro‌ models are expected to launch within weeks.

Next iPad Air Again Rumored to Feature Landscape Front Camera

[ad_1]

The next-generation iPad Air will be equipped with a landscape front camera, according to the leaker known as “ShrimpApplePro.”

iPad Air 5 Colors
If this information is accurate, the front camera on the next iPad Air would be located in the bezel to the right of the screen when the device is held upright. As a result, the front camera would be positioned at the top of the iPad when the device is in landscape orientation, making it centered with the user’s eyes during video calls. This change would be especially beneficial to those who use the iPad Air with a Magic Keyboard.

On the current iPad Air, the front camera is in the top bezel above the screen, resulting in it being off-center in landscape orientation.

The leaker does not expect the next iPad Air to have any other significant design changes. They also cast doubt on a larger 12.9-inch iPad Air, but that model has been widely rumored by multiple sources, so it would be surprising if it did not launch.

A landscape front camera had already been rumored for both the next iPad Pro and iPad Air, so it is becoming an increasingly likely design change. Apple already repositioned the front camera on the entry-level iPad 10 a few years ago, so it would make sense for the change to be expanded to the entire iPad lineup eventually.

“During ‌Face ID‌ setup, iPad needs to be in landscape with the camera at the top of the screen,” read hidden code in iPadOS 17.4.

Apple is expected to unveil new iPads in late March or in April.

“ShrimpApplePro” has a mixed track record with Apple rumors over the past few years. The leaker accurately revealed details about devices like the iPhone 15 Pro and Apple Watch Series 9, but they were incorrect about the Apple Watch Ultra 2 being available in a Space Black finish and the iPad mini being updated in 2023.

iPad Air and iPad Pro Could Both Feature Landscape FaceTime Camera

[ad_1]

Apple’s upcoming redesigned iPad Air and OLED iPad Pro models could include a front-facing camera positioned on the side of the device so that it is upright when in a landscape orientation, individual rumors suggest.

iPad Pro 2024 Landscape Camera Feature
Currently, the ‌iPad Air‌ and both iPad Pro models in Apple’s lineup feature a FaceTime camera on the top of the device, which puts the camera off-center when taking a ‌FaceTime‌ call in landscape mode.

Seemingly recognizing the issue, Apple on the 10th-generation ‌iPad‌ relocated the front-facing camera to the side of the device so that it would be usable in landscape mode rather than portrait mode. Apple has not launched an ‌iPad‌ since, but it appears that Apple could be making this change on future iPads as well.

In January of this year, code discovered in iOS 17.4 suggested the next ‌iPad Pro‌ could adopt a similar design for the ‌FaceTime‌ camera. “During ‌Face ID‌ setup, ‌iPad‌ needs to be in landscape with the camera at the top of the screen,” read the code.

Now, occasional leaker Instant Digital on the Chinese social platform Weibo has claimed that this change is also coming to the two rumored new versions of the ‌iPad Air‌, in both 10.9 and 12.9-inch sizes.

How Apple has achieved this switch to a landscape ‌FaceTime‌ camera on the new ‌iPad‌ models is unclear, since the second-generation Apple Pencil connects to both the ‌iPad Air‌ and ‌iPad Pro‌ using an inductive magnetic charger along the same side.

But with Apple rumored to be launching a new ‌Apple Pencil‌ alongside the updated iPads, Apple may have come up with a solution to the issue. Either way, we should find out soon. Both the new ‌iPad Air‌ and ‌OLED ‌iPad‌ Pro‌ models are expected to launch as soon as this month.

Epic iPhone Landscape Photos: Easy Techniques

iPhone Landscape

Unlock the full potential of your iPhone’s camera with simple yet powerful techniques for capturing breathtaking landscape photographs. Whether you’re an amateur photographer or a seasoned pro, the art of landscape photography is within your grasp, especially when using the device that’s always with you: your iPhone. The video below from iPhone Photography School delves into essential tips and strategies, distilled from expert advice, to help you elevate your landscape images from good to epic.

The Golden Hour Glow: Harnessing Light and Time of Day

One of the most transformative elements in photography is light. The soft, warm glow during the golden hour—shortly after sunrise or before sunset—can turn an ordinary scene into a stunning photograph. This magical lighting condition enriches the colors and textures of the landscape, highlighting the beauty of nature in its purest form. By planning your photo sessions around these times, you can capture the landscape in a captivating array of colors and contrasts.

Mastering Composition and Perspective

Composition is more than just framing a beautiful scene; it’s about creating a visual narrative. To achieve depth and intrigue in your landscape photos, consider incorporating elements in the foreground, middle ground, and background. This technique draws the viewer’s eye through the image, creating a sense of immersion. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different vantage points. Sometimes, a slight change in perspective, such as kneeling down or climbing higher, can dramatically alter the impact of your photo.

Leveraging iPhone Camera Capabilities

The versatility of the iPhone’s camera, with its array of lenses from wide to telephoto, offers a plethora of creative possibilities. Each lens can frame the landscape in unique ways, allowing you to capture vast expanses or zoom in for detailed shots. Utilizing iPhone-specific features, such as tapping to adjust exposure or employing leading lines, can guide the viewer’s attention and enhance the overall composition of your photo.

Adapting to Environmental Variabilities

Nature is unpredictable, and its ever-changing conditions can be challenging yet rewarding to capture. Embrace the variability of light and shadow, and use it to your advantage by being flexible and creative. Moving around to explore different angles and compositions can uncover hidden photographic gems. Dynamic elements like moving clouds or changing shadows add drama and a sense of time to your photos, making them more compelling.

Capturing the Moment: Dynamic Scenes and Transient Light

The transient nature of landscape photography means that sometimes you have only a moment to capture the perfect shot. Be on the lookout for unique and dynamic scenes that can add a layer of interest to your photographs. The play of light and shadows, especially during the golden hour, can transform a landscape into a mesmerizing scene full of depth and emotion.

Photography is as much about seeing as it is about capturing, and with these techniques, you’re well on your way to taking epic landscape photos with your iPhone. Remember, the best camera is the one you have with you, and by mastering a few simple techniques, you can turn your iPhone into a powerful tool for landscape photography. Explore, experiment, and enjoy the process of capturing the beauty of the world around you.

Navigating the Legal Landscape of Tommy Chong CBD Oil

Hey there, fellow CBD enthusiasts! You’re in the right place if you’ve been considering trying Tommy Chong CBD oil. In this article, we will take a deep dive into the legal aspects surrounding this popular CBD product. Understanding the legal landscape is crucial whether you’re a long-time user or just curious about its benefits.

Let’s start with the basics. Like many other CBD products, Tommy Chong CBD oil derives from the hemp plant. The legal status of hemp-derived CBD is a result of the 2018 Farm Bill, which removed hemp from the list of controlled substances.

This legislation made it legal to cultivate, process, and distribute hemp and its derivatives, including CBD, as long as the THC content is below 0.3%. Tommy Chong CBD oil complies with this requirement, ensuring its legality under federal law.

However, it’s important to note that individual state laws can vary. Some states have their own regulations regarding the sale and possession of CBD products, so it’s essential to check your local laws to ensure compliance.

The Importance of Third-Party Testing

Regarding Tommy Chong CBD oil, legality isn’t the only concern. Quality and safety are paramount, and third-party testing is crucial in ensuring these aspects.

Reputable CBD brands, like Tommy Chong’s, often subject their products to third-party lab testing. These tests independently assess the product’s cannabinoid content, ensuring that it meets legal requirements.

Additionally, third-party testing checks for contaminants, such as pesticides and heavy metals, which can be harmful when present in CBD products. You can have confidence in their quality and safety by choosing products that have undergone rigorous testing.

CBD and Your Health: Consultation is Key

While Tommy Chong CBD oil is legal and undergoes rigorous testing, it’s essential to remember that CBD products are not one-size-fits-all. Individual responses to CBD can vary, and it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating it into your wellness routine, especially if you have underlying medical conditions or are taking other medications.

Your healthcare provider can offer personalized guidance on dosage and usage, ensuring that you use Tommy Chong CBD oil safely and effectively. It’s crucial to making the most of this popular CBD product while safeguarding your health.

Tommy Chong CBD Oil: Finding the Right Product

The Legal Landscape: Bookie Software Compliance and Regulation

The world of bookmaking has seen a dramatic upheaval recently, especially in the context of sports betting. For bookmakers, the legalization and regulation of sports betting in many countries has brought up both new opportunities and difficulties. This extensive post will examine the major elements, difficulties, and best practices for managing this dynamic industry as we dig into the complex legal environment of bookie software regulation and compliance.

The Evolution of Sports Betting Regulation

Understanding the bigger picture of sports betting legislation is crucial before diving into the minutiae of best bookie software compliance. The regulatory environment has changed dramatically over the years, and bookmakers’ software has been directly impacted by this evolution.

Historical Perspective

Sports betting has a long history and has been largely dominated by underground bookies and offshore sportsbooks. Concerns regarding consumer protection, fairness, and the possibility of criminal conduct were raised by this uncontrolled environment.

Wave of Legalization

The urge to bring sports betting out of the shadows and raise money for taxes has sparked a wave of legalization that has swept over several regions in recent years. A notable example is the United States, where various states have legalized sports betting after the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018.

Regulatory Models

Different regulatory regimes for sports betting have been implemented by numerous nations and jurisdictions. Some want a monopoly operated by the government, while others choose a more free market strategy with authorized private operators. These models provide the operational guidelines, licensing requirements, and compliance obligations for bookies.

Key Bookie Software Compliance Factors

Bookmakers must adhere to a wide range of conditions and specifications in order to do business lawfully and morally. Some of the most important compliance factors are listed below:

License Requirements

The first and most important step in starting a bookmaking business is frequently obtaining the required permits. These licenses often have certain requirements and costs and are given out by regulatory organizations or gaming commissions.

Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Procedures

Bookmakers are frequently forced to execute strict KYC and AML procedures in order to avoid fraud and money laundering. Customers’ identities must be confirmed, and transactions must be watched for unusual behaviour.

Measures for Responsible Gambling

Regulators frequently require self-exclusion programs and wagering limit restrictions as examples of responsible gaming practices. Additionally, bookmakers must offer assistance to those who have gambling addictions.

Data security and confidentiality

It is crucial to guarantee the security and privacy of client data. For bookies, adhering to data privacy legislation is essential, such as the General Data privacy Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union.

Integrity and Fair Play

The integrity of the sports and events that bookmakers give odds on must be guaranteed. This involves keeping an eye out for match-fixing and informing the authorities of any suspect behaviour.

Financial Transparency

A crucial element of compliance is financial openness. It may be necessary for bookmakers to have separate accounts, submit to financial audits, and offer open financial statements.

Rules of Marketing and Advertising

Regulators frequently put stringent limits on bookmakers’ ability to sell and advertise their services. This includes rules for ethical advertising and prohibitions on focusing on children.

Bookie Software Compliance Challenges

Although compliance is crucial, it presents bookies and software suppliers with a number of difficulties:

A Complex and Changing Regime

The regulatory environment is intricate and dynamic. Bookmakers need to be aware of any changes to the rules and regulations in the countries where they operate.

Cross-Border Operations

The difficulty of adhering to many sets of legislation is faced by bookmakers that operate in several distinct jurisdictions. Complex software solutions that can adjust to changing compliance standards are needed for this.

Data Protection

Keeping consumer data secure is a never-ending issue, particularly at a time of growing cybersecurity threats. To safeguard sensitive information, bookmakers must make significant security-related investments.

Client Verification

Strict KYC implementation might be time-consuming and put off certain clients. It might be difficult to strike the ideal balance between security and usability.

Responsible gambling

It can be challenging to strike a balance between encouraging safe gambling and maintaining a successful company. Bookmakers must identify strategies to promote ethical gaming without turning away clients.

Best Practices for Bookie Software Compliance

Bookmakers and software suppliers should follow a few best practices to successfully traverse the difficult world of compliance and regulation:

Keep yourself informed.

Keep a close eye on any changes to the laws in the areas where you operate. To make sure you are current, think about speaking with legal or compliance professionals.

Purchase reliable software.

Select bookmaker software that has compliance in mind. To facilitate KYC, AML, responsible gaming, and data protection, look for certain elements.

Keep accurate records.

Keep thorough records of all communications with and transactions with customers. In the event of audits or inquiries, these records may be of great use.

Regular Training

Make sure that your personnel is knowledgeable about compliance practices. Consistent training can aid in preventing compliance failures.

Collaborate with Regulators

Open lines of communication should be established with regulatory bodies. Collaboration can improve how well employees comprehend and adhere to compliance standards.

Conclusion

Operating a bookmaking firm requires navigating the complicated but crucial legal environment of bookie software compliance and regulation. The long-term profitability and sustainability of bookmakers will depend on maintaining compliance with laws and regulations as the business continues to change. Bookmakers can survive in a regulated market while giving their consumers a secure and entertaining betting experience by remaining updated, investing in the correct software, and following best practices.
