April 13: Today in Apple history: Early iPad rumor gets Apple fans buzzing April 13, 2005: The tech world gets excited when a sketchy rumor suggests Apple is building a tablet computer.

The Chinese-language report claims Quanta will build a 15-inch touchscreen tablet PC with detachable keyboard. Apple will supposedly ship the device in the first quarter of 2006. Things don’t turn out quite like that, but the rumor offers the first hint about Apple’s secret iPad project.

The first iPad rumor?

The idea of developing a tablet fascinated Apple co-founder Steve Jobs for a long time, although he denied it when asked by journalist Walt Mossberg in May 2003.

“We have no plans to make a tablet,” Jobs said at the time.

However, a tablet appealed to Jobs’ love of minimalism, since it was basically a screen with nothing else.

The iPad: Inspired by Alan Kay’s Dynabook

In particular, Jobs was inspired by the Dynabook, a concept dreamed up in 1968 by Xerox PARC (and later Apple) engineer Alan Kay.

During Jobs’ absence from Apple, the company experimented with tablet-like mobile devices in the form of the Newton MessagePad (which Jobs ultimately canceled upon his return to Cupertino).

However, by the early 2000s, Apple began working on the iPad, or at least thinking a lot more about the tablet computer form factor.

In March 2004, the company surveyed select customers, claiming it was considering relaunching the Newton. In actuality, Apple was gathering data about demand for future mobile devices.

That exact same month, the company filed a design patent application for an “electronic device” that looks virtually identical to the iPad that shipped a few years later (with the exception of the smaller display, which looked more like the iPad mini). The patent application listed both Jobs and Apple design chief Jony Ive as inventors.

Apple ultimately opted to develop a touch interface smartphone, the iPhone, before revisiting the iPad concept. It’s not clear whether there was any truth to the Quanta rumor about a possible tablet computer. Perhaps Apple was sourcing components it was unable to put together in its Industrial Design lab back in Cupertino.

Still, this rumor got a lot of people buzzing about a possible Apple tablet back in 2005. Another five years passed before Apple introduced the iPad. However, this rumor revealed definite excitement about what Apple might do with a tablet.

While the arrival of new iPad Pro and Air models seems imminent, rumor has it we won’t be getting a classic update until next year. If you have no interest in waiting and want to explore some of the best iPads on the market, then the Apple 10th-generation iPad’s current sale is for you. The 64GB Wi-Fi model is back down to its record-low price of $349 from $449 — a 22 percent cut. Apple released its 10th-gen iPad in 2022 and garnered an 85 in our review. It offered a new look and features, with new design elements such as a 10.9-inch screen and a Touch ID moving to the lock button. It also offers a liquid retina display with a 2360x1640p resolution.

The 10th-gen iPad comes with an A14 chip — a step up from the ninth-gen’s A13 but still not as strong as the M1 and M2 that power the iPad Air and Pro. It comes with a solid battery that lasts 11 hours and 45 minutes if you play iTunes movies on rotation and almost 10 hours when you’re working with an attached keyboard.

Apple’s new iPad Pro could launch in early May with updated internals and a refreshed design. All rumors surrounding Apple’s next premium tablet indicate it will feature OLED displays.

The first iPadOS 17.5 beta seems to confirm this, as it contains four new display firmware for unreleased iPad models.

9to5Mac did some code digging in the recently released iPadOS 17.5 beta and found multiple references to unreleased iPads. Additionally, they found four new display firmware for iPad16,3, iPad16,4, iPad16,5, and iPad16,6. Apparently, these four models are the upcoming iPad Pro, separated by cellular and Wi-Fi options.

Based on the references, the report says Apple’s 2024 iPad Pro lineup will use OLED displays, with different suppliers for the 11-inch and 12.9-inch models.

Apple seemingly had to delay the launch of its new iPad Pro lineup due to the complex OLED panels. The tablets are now apparently scheduled for launch in the second week of May. Apple will soon start shipping marketing materials to its retail stores to prepare for the new iPad’s launch.

The 2024 iPad Pro’s OLED panels should provide higher brightness levels with better colors, contrast, and clarity.

12.9-inch iPad Air might also launch soon

Apple should also unveil a new 12.9-inch iPad Air alongside the OLED iPad Pro. Rumors suggest the OLED iPad Pros will cost significantly more than their predecessors, so a 12.9-inch Air should fill the gap caused by the price hike.

iPadOS 17.5 beta also contains references to an unreleased Apple Pencil. It will seemingly support a new “squeeze” gesture. Previous leaks indicate the next-gen Apple Pencil will have Find My integration, with a patent filing popping up about this way back in May 2023.

In addition to the new iPad Pro, Apple is working on a refresh for the iPad mini and low-cost iPad. The two models could launch towards the end of the year and sport minor internal spec bumps.

More than just the Wi-Fi models are being discounted right now at Best Buy, as you can also get $100 off both cellular versions of the iPad. The 64GB cellular iPad is available for $499.00 and the 256GB cellular iPad is available for $649.00. Again, all four colors are on sale at these prices.

While rumors have been focused on new iPad Pro and iPad Air models, some Apple customers are wondering when the next iPad mini will be released.

In his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said new iPad mini and entry-level iPad models will be released in late 2024 at the earliest.

“The company is also working on new versions of the low-end iPad and iPad mini, but those won’t be coming before the end of the year at the earliest,” he said. “The new downscale iPad will probably end up being a cost-reduced version of the 10th generation model from 2022, while the iPad mini update won’t include much more than a processor upgrade.”

The current sixth-generation iPad mini was released in September 2021, and it is equipped with an A15 Bionic chip. Gurman expects the next model to feature a newer chip, but few other changes. Additional features rumored by other sources include camera upgrades and a fix for the “jelly scrolling” display behavior.

The low-end iPad was last updated in October 2022. An eleventh-generation iPad could start at a lower price than the 10th-generation iPad, which could pave the way for Apple to discontinue the ninth-generation iPad with the Lightning connector.

One new iPad model has appeared in Indian regulatory filings ahead of its expected announcement next month.

The listing, spotted by 91Mobiles, appeared in the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) database with the model number A2386. This does not correlate with any existing Apple device.

91Mobiles and several other sites have erroneously suggested that A2387 is also a new ‌iPad‌ model, but it actually relates to the battery for the current- and previous-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro. A2386, on the other hand, is a new listing likely for a battery in one of the new iPads.

It is not clear whether this device is a new iPad Air or ‌iPad Pro‌, but both product lines are expected to be refreshed in May. New ‌iPad‌ models have been thought to be on the brink of launch for several weeks, and the latest regulatory filing seems to cement expectations that they will appear relatively soon.

April 3, 2010: Today in Apple history: ‘Magical’ first iPad debuts in stores April 3, 2010: The first iPad hits store shelves after months of anticipation. The tablet Apple CEO Steve Jobs called “magical and revolutionary” at its unveiling earlier in the year quickly becomes a major success.

Jobs initially showed off Apple’s first tablet on January 27, 2010. And there had been rumors long before then. But the wait for the iPad is finally over … at least for people in the United States. (The iPad’s international debut won’t happen until May.)

First iPad release date: April 3, 2010

Arriving nearly three years after the original iPhone launch, the iPad boasted a supersized touchscreen that made it perfect for consuming content. It seemed purpose-built for watching movies, reading long-form content like books and magazines, and listening to music. Plus, iPad owners could handle email and browse the web, just like on iPhone, only with a much larger canvas.

That very first iPad boasted a 9.7-inch multitouch display and a 1GHz Apple A4 processor. Storage options ranged from 16GB to 64GB of flash memory. It didn’t come with a camera. The first iPad with 3G cellular connectivity came out a few weeks later.

Apple’s first tablet benefited from a lot of prerelease excitement, but it faced a certain amount of skepticism, too. After Jobs announced the device, Dan Lyons at Newsweek wrote, “Jobs and his team kept using words like ‘breakthrough’ and ‘magical,’ but the iPad is neither, at least not right now.”

Jeremy A. Kaplan at Fox News unleashed an even more scathing evaluation. “Call it the iPad or the iPlod, but the message seems clear: Apple may have lost its mojo,” he wrote. And John C. Dvorak at MarketWatch dismissed the original iPad as “a giant iPod Touch.”

But those comments came from people who had never actually used the device. After Apple sent out review units, Walt Mossberg at All Things D called the iPad a “pleasure to use,” and said it made him less interested in using his laptop. And David Pogue at The New York Times said anybody interested in a tablet would “love the machine.”

Cult of Mac’s in-depth review by publisher Leander Kahney called the first Apple tablet “perfect for relaxing at home or on a plane.”

Consumers knew what they wanted. Apple sold 300,000 iPads on launch day and a million units in less than a month. By the end of the breakthrough tablet’s first year, Apple sold around 25 million of them. That made the iPad the most successful new product category launch in Apple history.

Like other iPads, the M1 iPad Air is getting up there in age, having launched back in March 2022. Because of the imminent launch of new models, we’re starting to see more consistent discounts on the 2022 tablets, which are still solid options for anyone who doesn’t care about waiting for the new sixth generation devices.
