How to Fix iOS 17.4 Battery Drain

iOS 17.4

With the release of iOS 17.4, iPhone users have reported improvements in battery life, signaling a step forward in Apple’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience. However, even with these advancements, certain settings and usage patterns can still lead to unnecessary battery drain. Drawing on expert insights and personal experiences, this video below from iReviews delves into practical strategies to maximize battery efficiency on devices running the latest iOS update.

Understanding iOS 17.4 Battery Performance

Initial observations suggest that iOS 17.4 has made commendable improvements in battery life. This enhancement is a result of both the operating system’s internal optimizations and the potential for users to adopt practices that further extend their device’s battery longevity. Let’s explore how you can leverage these improvements and mitigate battery drain with a few adjustments.

Essential Steps for Optimized Battery Life

  • Patience After Updating: Post-installation of iOS 17.4, give your device 3-5 days to integrate the update fully. It’s normal to experience a temporary decrease in battery life as the system undergoes indexing and other background processes.
  • Exiting Beta: For those who participated in the beta testing, updating to the final release version of iOS 17.4 is crucial. This ensures you’re benefiting from the latest battery optimizations that might not have been present in the beta versions.
  • App Updates: Regularly updating apps is key. Developers often release updates that are specifically designed to improve compatibility and efficiency with new iOS versions, contributing to better battery management.

Advanced Settings for Further Efficiency

  • Managing Haptic Feedback: While haptic feedback enhances the tactile experience, it can also be a significant drain on battery life. Consider limiting this feature to essential uses only.
  • Smart Feature Usage: Innovative iOS 17.4 features, like screen distance measurement and augmented reality (AR) enhancements, offer unique functionalities but can deplete battery quickly. Disable these features if they are not in regular use.
  • Wi-Fi Over Cellular Data: Opting for Wi-Fi, especially over 5G connections, can markedly reduce power consumption, as cellular data usage is more demanding on the battery.
  • Optimizing Screen Settings: Utilize dark mode to save battery on OLED displays and reconsider the need for the back tap feature, which, while convenient, can lead to inadvertent battery usage.
  • Siri and App Management: Disabling “Hey Siri” prevents your device from perpetually listening for commands, conserving energy. Additionally, scrutinize apps that are heavy on battery usage and manage their background activity.

Debunking the App Switcher Myth

A common misconception is that frequently closing apps via the app switcher conserves battery life. This practice, however, can lead to higher power consumption as apps require more energy to restart. Understanding the correct way to manage apps can significantly aid in extending your battery’s endurance.

Summary

Adopting these strategies can drastically improve your iOS device’s battery performance under the 17.4 update. Remember, while some tips may offer immediate benefits, others require consistency and changes in usage habits to manifest significant improvements. Subscribe for more insights and tips to keep your iPhone running efficiently and to make the most out of every charge.

Incorporating these suggestions into your daily use can transform the way your device manages power, ensuring that your battery life is optimized and that you’re getting the most out of iOS 17.4’s enhancements.

How to Find Out if Your iPhone Will Run iOS 18

iOS 18

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) serves as the grand stage for the unveiling of the newest iteration of iOS each year, with iOS 18 being this year’s release, marking a highly anticipated event for developers and tech enthusiasts alike.

As we look ahead to the 2024 conference, which has yet to occur, the question of compatibility naturally arises, sparking curiosity among iPhone users about whether their devices will be in line to receive the forthcoming iOS 18 update.

Fortunately, there are several methods to gauge the likelihood of your iPhone being supported, offering a glimpse into whether it will be sidelined or upgraded with Apple’s latest software enhancements. This anticipation helps users prepare for what’s next, ensuring they’re not caught off guard by the compatibility announcements when they’re officially made.

Understanding iOS Compatibility Patterns

The most reliable way to predict if your iPhone will run iOS 18 is to look at Apple’s historical software update patterns:

  • Chipset Matters: The primary factor determining iOS compatibility is the iPhone’s chipset (its processing core). Apple generally supports iPhones for around 5-6 years before a new iOS version is too demanding for the older chipset.
  • Current Support: Check which devices are currently running the most recent iOS version. This usually provides a strong foundation for predicting the compatibility list for the next major update.

How to Find Out Which iPhones Might Support iOS 18

  • Rumors and Leaks: Keep an eye on reputable tech websites and blogs like MacRumors, 9to5Mac, and Tom’s Guide. These sites often offer credible leaks and rumors about iOS device compatibility ahead of the official WWDC announcement.

  • Check Apple’s iOS Website: Visit the official Apple iOS website after the WWDC announcement to see the official list of supported devices for the newest version.

  • Calculate Age: If your iPhone is more than five years old, there’s an increased chance that it might not support the latest iOS version.

Potential Limitations of iPhones Running iOS 18

Even if your older iPhone model supports iOS 18, it’s important to understand that you might face some constraints:

  • Performance: Some of the new iOS 18 features may be more demanding on older hardware, potentially leading to slower performance.
  • Feature Restrictions: Newer features that rely on the latest chipsets or hardware components might be incompatible with older iPhone models.

Here is a list of rumored devices for iOS 18:

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone SE (3rd generation)
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation)

What to Do if Your iPhone Won’t Run iOS 18

If your iPhone isn’t compatible with iOS 18, don’t worry. Here’s what you can do:

  • Continue using your iPhone: Your device will still function, and you’ll still receive security updates (if Apple provides them). You might just miss out on the latest features.
  • Upgrade: If you’re eager to experience the new iOS features, consider upgrading to a newer iPhone model.

In Summary

While there’s no foolproof way to determine iOS 18 compatibility before its official announcement, Apple’s past update patterns and reliable leaks offer strong clues. Be sure to check the official list on Apple’s website after the WWDC 2024 announcement for confirmation.

Knowing whether your iPhone can handle the latest update will help you make informed decisions about keeping your current device or upgrading to enhance your iOS experience.

iOS 17.4 vs iOS 17.3.1 (Video)

iOS 17.4

The anticipation is building for Apple’s next big software rollout, iOS 17.4, expected to hit iPhones within the next 48 hours. For those eager to understand how this update compares to its predecessor, iOS 17.3.1, we’ve got you covered. Drawing insights from a detailed video analysis, we delve into the performance enhancements and tweaks that iOS 17.4 brings to the table.

Firstly, it’s thrilling to note that iOS 17.4 is just around the corner, with the Release Candidate (RC) version already making waves. This gives us a near-final glimpse of what to expect, setting the stage for an exciting comparison with iOS 17.3.1. We should have the release of the final version of iOS 17.4 this week.

Wi-Fi Performance: A Closer Look

Connectivity is crucial, and the Wi-Fi performance test offers intriguing insights. While iOS 17.4 showcases slightly improved download speeds, upload speeds remain consistent with iOS 17.3.1. This suggests that although improvements are minor, they contribute to a more reliable and persistent Wi-Fi connection, enhancing user experience.

CPU Performance: The Heart of the Matter

In the realm of processing power, Geekbench 6 reveals that iOS 17.3.1 edges out iOS 17.4 slightly in both single-core and multi-core scores. Despite these differences being marginal, they highlight the nuanced balance Apple strives for between performance and new features.

Navigating Bugs and Stability

No update is without its quirks, and iOS 17.4 is no exception. A notable bug causes widgets and icons to vanish from the home screen sporadically. However, this does not overshadow the overall smoothness and stability of the operating system, reassuring users about the update’s reliability.

Battery Life: Endurance Tested

Battery longevity is paramount for users, and the 48-hour battery life test sheds light on this aspect. iOS 17.3.1 provides slightly better battery performance, with an extra 10 to 20 minutes of on-screen time compared to iOS 17.4. Nonetheless, the difference is minimal, ensuring that iOS 17.4 still stands strong in terms of battery life.

As the official release of iOS 17.4 looms on the horizon, the excitement among iPhone users is palpable. This comparison not only highlights the incremental improvements and adjustments Apple has made but also reassures users of the company’s commitment to enhancing the iOS experience with each update. Whether it’s the subtle boost in Wi-Fi connectivity, the slight tweaks in CPU performance, or the overall system stability, iOS 17.4 is poised to offer a refined user experience.

You will be pleased to know that despite the minor bugs and the slight decrease in battery life, the update promises to maintain the high standards of performance and reliability that iPhone users have come to expect. If you are wondering how these changes will impact your daily usage, rest assured that the transition from iOS 17.3.1 to 17.4 will be smooth, with benefits that outweigh the drawbacks.

As we await the official rollout of iOS 17.4, this comparison serves as a guide to what users can anticipate. Apple continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible with its software updates, ensuring that each version of iOS enhances the user experience, even if it’s in small, incremental ways. Stay tuned for the update, and prepare to enjoy the latest improvements Apple has in store for your iPhone, iOS 17.4 is expected either today or tomorrow.

Apple backtracks on removal of iOS 17.4 Home Screen Web Apps

iOS 17.4

Apple’s iOS 17.4 software update is coming this week, it brings major changes to the App Store in Europe and now Apple has announced that it has changed its mind on removing Home Screen Web Apps in Europe.

Previously, Apple said that it would be disabling Home Screen web Apps in Europe for “security and privacy reasons’, it has now decided that it will not be removing these apps and their functionality with iOS 17.4, after considerable backlash from consumers, developers, and also the EU regulators. You can see what they have to say below.

Previously, Apple announced plans to remove the Home Screen web apps capability in the EU as part of our efforts to comply with the DMA. The need to remove the capability was informed by the complex security and privacy concerns associated with web apps to support alternative browser engines that would require building a new integration architecture that does not currently exist in iOS.

We have received requests to continue to offer support for Home Screen web apps in iOS, therefore we will continue to offer the existing Home Screen web apps capability in the EU. This support means Home Screen web apps continue to be built directly on WebKit and its security architecture, and align with the security and privacy model for native apps on iOS.

Developers and users who may have been impacted by the removal of Home Screen web apps in the beta release of iOS in the EU can expect the return of the existing functionality for Home Screen web apps with the availability of iOS 17.4 in early March.

This is good news as it means that the full functionality and features of Hoem Screen Web Apps will still be available in Europe when the in Europe when the iOS 17.4 software update is released this week. We are expecting the update either today or tomorrow, as soon as we get some more details, we will let you know.
