A new dawn of flagship killers might be on the horizon, powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3. This new chipset doubles down on the company’s focus on AI, further integrating on-device generative AI and could power smarter mid-range phones capable of challenging their powerful flagship counterparts.

Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 offers significant improvements by expanding the AI features brought by the previous Snapdragon 7 series, including some of the advanced AI technology from the premium Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, used in some of the best Android phones seen this year so far. These enhancements incorporate improved photography features, advanced gaming technology, and support for a wide range of AI models.

While cloud-based AIs like Chat GPT can handle complex tasks, they need a constant internet connection to work. However, on-device AI, which recent high-end Snapdragon chips can power, is better for tasks like voice and image recognition, natural language processing, and providing smart filters in photo editing apps. Onboard AI can also provide more practical day-to-day improvements to performance and longer battery life by fine-tuning software and running apps, predicting battery health and optimizing charging.

With the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3, Qualcomm notes on-device AI can generate original pictures or text and enhance users’ AI assistant and provide faster and more accurate language translation than before.

The new chip’s AI integration can also improve photography. The 18-bit cognitive Image Signal Processor (ISP) uses something called ‘semantic segmentation’, which uses AI to identify specific elements in a scene, such as faces, clothing, and backgrounds. It then enables individual optimization of each element’s color, tone, sharpness, and noise reduction.

The Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 also now supports 18-bit color instead of 12-bit, offering a wider range of displayed colors, creating smoother gradients, subtler variations, and more realistic photos.

Levelled-up gaming

Built on a 4-nanomerer process node, the new Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 provides a 15% improvement in CPU performance and a 5% improvement in power efficiency, compared to its predecessor. The chip boasts a high-performance Cortex-X4 CPU running at 2.8 GHz, supported by four performance and three efficiency cores. Gamers will note that the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3’s Adreno GPU offers a 45% performance boost over last year’s model.

The Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 will bring over select Snapdragon Elite Gaming features used in the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. These include cinematic effects like bloom, depth of field, and motion blur to provide what Qulcoom claims to be “desktop-level visuals.” Qualcomm also says its Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0 feature allows frame rates to be doubled from 60 to 120 FPS without impacting battery life.

Thanks to the addition of Wi-Fi 7 support, the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 can achieve download speeds up to 5.8Gbps, almost doubling the previous model. While its X63 5G modem is only slightly behind this with a max speed of 4.2Gbps. The faster internet speeds ensure responsiveness and eliminate stutters for a smoother gaming experience.

Gamers and non-gamers alike will also benefit from the chip’s optimization for low-latency smartphone-to-earbud sound and improved spatial audio, which supports head tracking, making games and films more immersive.

What could it mean for mid-range phones?

Qualcomm announced that OnePlus, Realme, and Sharp will be the first devices to use the new Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 chip, and are expected to be announced in the coming months.

AI advancements like those implemented on the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 could potentially revolutionize mid-range smartphones and bring them out of the shadow of phones with premium chips. Including AI could enhance performance, photography, gaming, and productivity, challenging flagship dominance.

Extending AI enhancements in mid-range devices could provide tools like real-time translation, note-taking, personalized recommendations and intelligent automation to a broader audience, potentially lowering the barrier to entry to AI tools, which could benefit those with limited access to premium devices.

At the very least, AI becoming more widely spread into mid-range phones will bring flagship-like intelligent features to more people at a more affordable price.

Now that Samsung has launched the Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55, the company is readying Galaxy M and Galaxy F versions of those phones.

The Galaxy M55 could be launched in India and Latin American markets soon.

Galaxy M55 is nearing its launch

Samsung has confirmed the existence of the Galaxy M55 (SM-M556B/DS). The company’s websites for India, Latin America, and the Levant regions have listed its support webpage.

Galaxy M55 specifications

Earlier reports about the Galaxy M55 have revealed that the phone uses a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor, which is quite powerful for its class. It is a 4nm chip made by Samsung Foundry and features one prime CPU core, three high-end CPU cores, and four power-efficient CPU cores.

It has the Adreno 644 GPU, which is more powerful than the GPU inside the Snapdragon 778G (used in the Galaxy A52s) and the Snapdragon 782G. The phone was spotted earlier with 8GB RAM and Android 14 (One UI 6) out of the box.

The phone is said to feature a 5,000mAh battery and 45W fast charging. It likely has a triple-camera setup featuring a 50MP primary camera. The phone will likely have a 12MP ultrawide camera and a 5MP macro camera.

Five months after unveiling its flagship smartphone chipset for 2024, Qualcomm is introducing a new high-end chipset. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is a slightly trimmed-down version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and vows to bring flagship features at a lower cost.

This new chip is made for more affordable high-end phones, popularly known as flagship killers.

Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 has many of the features from Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 (SM8635) is a 4nm chip made by TSMC, similar to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It will be used in smartphones from Honor, iQOO, Realme, Redmi (Xiaomi sub-brand), and Xiaomi.

This new high-end smartphone processor has many of the same on-device AI and Generative AI processing, advanced camera processing, advanced connectivity, and lossless audio features found on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It can run many popular Large Language Models (LLMs), including Baichuan-7B, Llama 2, and Google Gemini Nano.

CPU

Qualcomm is using a downclocked CPU and one fewer high-performance CPU core in the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. It has one Cortex-X4 CPU core clocked at 3GHz, four Cortex-A720 CPU cores clocked at up to 2.8GHz, and three Cortex-A520 CPU cores clocked at 2GHz. All these CPU cores are clocked lower than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

GPU

The chipset also features a downgraded GPU (could be Adreno 735) that has real-time hardware-accelerated ray tracing but lacks global illumination effects. It also lacks Unreal Engine 5’s Lumen global illumination and reflection effects.

The GPU features Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (AI-powered frame resolution upscaling), Adreno Frame Motion Engine (frame rate interpolation), and 10-bit HDR gaming. It also supports OpenGL ES 3.2, OpenCL 2.0 FP, and Vulkan 1.3 APIs. The GPU can drive 4K 60Hz or QHD+ 144Hz screens. It supports a variable refresh rate (1-240Hz, depending on resolution). It also supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG video playback. It also supports 1080p 240Hz or 8K 30Hz external displays.

DRAM & Storage

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 supports UFS 4.0 storage and up to 24GB LPDDR5X DRAM (4,200MHz). The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 supports LPDDR5X DRAM clocked at 4,800MHz.

AI/NPU

Qualcomm AI Engine, which combines the processing power of the CPU, GPU, and Hexagon NPU, carries out all the on-device AI and Generative AI processing. It supports more than 30 LLMs and LVMs (Large Vision Models) with up to 10 billion+ parameters. Some of its capabilities include text-to-image generation, on-device Generative AI-powered voice assistant, multi-modal AI (that can take inputs in multiple forms simultaneously), and image/video editing.

Cameras

The Qualcomm Spectra Triple 18-bit ISP inside the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 supports up to 200MP resolution camera sensors. It can operate a 108MP camera, 64MP+36MP dual-camera setup, or 36MP+36MP+36MP triple-camera setup with zero shutter lag. It can seamlessly switch between cameras with active HDR processing.

It can capture HDR images and videos. In fact, it can record 4K HDR video and a 64MP HDR image simultaneously. It can record up to 4K 60fps HDR videos and slow-motion 1080p videos at 240fps. However, it lacks support for 8K video recording, which is present on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

It supports Google’s Ultra HDR video format (Samsung’s Super HDR is powered by this feature) and supports recording HDR videos in Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+ formats. Features like multi-frame noise reduction, video upscaling, and RAW image capture are also supported.

Connectivity

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 has a fully integrated Snapdragon X75 5G modem, the same modem used in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. It supports up to 5Gbps download speeds and up to 3.5Gbps upload speeds. It supports SA and NSA 5G networks over sub-6GHz and mmWave bands. For sub-6GHz bands, it supports 4×4 MIMO, while 2×2 MIMO is supported for mmWave networks.

It also supports 8 CA (Carrier Aggregation) and 5G + 5G Dual-SIM Dual-Active SIM. Several AI-powered power-saving features for 5G connectivity and configuration are also included in this chip.

Powered by the Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 system, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 features triple-frequency GNSS (BeiDou, GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, NavIC, and QZSS), Wi-Fi 7 with 8×8 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.4 (with LE Audio and Auracast, aptX Lossless, and aptX Adaptive), and USB 3.1 Gen 2 (with Type-C port).

Phones with Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 to launch in March 2024

Xiaomi will be the first to launch a smartphone using the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset. Other brands will bring their Snapdragon 8s Gen 3-equipped phones later this month (March 2024).

Today, Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, a new high-end smartphone processor for flagship killers. It brings most of the important high-end features from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, its flagship smartphone chipset for this year. So, what’s different between them?

The naming might confuse many users, as the 8s Gen 3 might make it feel like it is better than the 8 Gen 3. However, that’s not the case.

Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 vs. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3: What’s different?

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is a trimmed-down version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. So, it sits below the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and even the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in some aspects. It is tailor-made for the so-called flagship killer phones and would be a great fit for the Galaxy S24 FE if it exists.

This new chip has an underclocked CPU and one less high-performance CPU core than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. As you can see in the comparison table below, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is made using the same 4nm process node from TSMC as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. However, it has one prime Cortex-X4 CPU core clocked at 3GHz, four Cortex-A720 CPU cores clocked at 2.8GHz, and three Cortex-A520 CPU cores clocked at 2GHz.

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 has five high-performance CPU cores and three power-efficient CPU cores. In comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has a total of six high-performance CPU cores and two power-efficient CPU cores. The Adreno 735 GPU in the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is less powerful than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s Adreno 750 GPU and lacks support for ray-tracing’s global illumination effects.

The RAM is also underclocked, and the new chip supports up to 24GB LPDDR5X DRAM and 4,200MHz (600MHz lower than Snapdragon 8 Gen 3).

The built-in ISP of this chip can record 4K 60fps videos but lacks support for 8K 30fps video recording, which is possible with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Even for slow-motion videos, it tops out at 1080p videos at 240fps. In comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 supports recording 4K slow-motion videos at 120fps, which is possible on the Galaxy S24.

The Snapdragon X70 5G modem inside the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is a step below the Snapdragon X75 5G modem used in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. So, its peak theoretical cellular download speeds are capped at 5Gbps instead of 10Gbps on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The rest of the features remain similar to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

So, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 has a slower CPU, a less powerful (but still powerful) GPU, slightly slower RAM, and a slower 5G modem. It also lacks features like 8K video recording and 4K 120fps slow-motion video recording. However, it will still be great for high-end gaming and other high-end tasks.

With generative AI transforming the way businesses around the world work, plan and evolve, the need to ensure the data such platforms use and generate is paramount.

Although primarily still seen as a cloud and storage leader, Amazon Web Services is looking to play a key role in ensuring businesses of all sizes remain safe against the myriad of security threats facing organizations today.

And with generative AI’s increasing popularity leading to an explosion in possible security threats, the company is setting out its stall to be the ideal ally when it comes to keeping your data protected in the generative AI age.

Raising the bar

“There’s always work to be done in security to continue to raise the bar – the question is, where are the risks, and how are you focusing on them?” Chris Betz, AWS CISO tells TechRadar Pro in an exclusive interview.

Generative AI is set to provide lots of advantages, but broken down to its simplest form, Betz notes that the platforms need to have due care and attention.

“Speaking to CISOs, there is a recognition that generative AI models are code,” he laughs. “And like code, it’s important that you have all of the protections you would normally have around any software program.”

As mentioned, AWS’ expertise across much of the technology industry means it is in a good place to provide these protections as part of an all-round offering – especially good news if your workers are already familiar with AWS technologies.

“One of the most amazing things about the infrastructure we’ve built here at AWS is that you build and secure as one consistent natural motion,” Betz notes, highlighting the importance of how generative AI fits within overall security applications, as companies don’t just utilize generative AI on its own, but as part of a wider solution.

“To take full advantage of generative AI, you have to be able to get large volumes of data in close proximity to incredible processing power, and be able to protect that data throughout – because in some cases, some of the most sensitive data you have, that makes your business unique, is that data you want to bring to your model, in order to train it and educate it.”

“That’s part of the reason why we designed the (AWS security) platform – we wanted to offer choice within so you can have the same foundation, and then bring different platforms…it’s really about providing builders with choice, and the tools they need.”

Betz says that generative AI has to fit within a company’s existing systems, and that, “bringing all this together, running on a platform, that operates within a suite of other technologies, all within a consistent security wrapper, is incredibly valuable”.

“Gen AI is an incredibly powerful tool for answering a certain set of questions,” he adds, “my goal with security, and technology in general, is to enable people to do smart, high judgement work, and have the computers do the rest.”

As with any new technology, the question emerges of the role actual humans will need to play – especially as much of the promotion around generative AI is concerned with making our lives easier.

But with humans often proving the weakest link when it comes to cybersecurity, can AI-powered systems finally help lessen the risk?

Betz is cagey, noting that although generative AI is really good at bringing together massive amounts of data and helping us understand it, “I don’t yet see it as a replacement for human judgement – but it’s an incredible way for people to look and find answers faster and easier.”

Instead, he says it can play a key role as a part of a suite of technologies that’s poised to keep helping us solve problems, with computers sticking to solving the problems they are best suited for.

“People solve really hard and thoughtful problems, and they should, like with any technology, question the data they are getting, and make sure that they’ve got the quality that we want,” he notes.

“I want the secure way to be the easy way – and I want the easy way to be the secure way,” he adds, using humans being distracted by a potential phishing email test from their company’s IT team as an example. “When security is a seamless part of how we do our jobs, it works best – when there’s friction, and people have to stop doing the job that they’re trying to to do to pause and think about security, that’s where we are in the riskiest position, where human judgement can go wrong.”

Overall, Betz is confident about the role of generative AI within the technology industry as a whole, and with AWS leading the way in so many areas, this confidence looks well-placed.

“I’m really excited to see where we go with generative AI over the next 12 months,” Betz concludes, “as an industry, we’ve got a solid foundation, at least within AWS – and I’m really interested to see where as we continue to build and explore, but also continue to make it safer for people to use these technologies.”
