How to use navigation gestures with the S Pen on Galaxy devices

Gesture navigation has been a thing on smartphones for some time now. More and more users are switching from the traditional navigation buttons to gestures on Android smartphones, including those made by Samsung.

However, on Samsung smartphones and tablets that come with an S Pen, navigation gestures can become an issue when the S Pen is used to draw or write near the edges of the display. This is particularly applicable to Android’s stock navigation gestures, which include swiping in from the left and right edge of the screen to go back.

Samsung addressed the problem a few years back by introducing an option to disable the use of navigation gestures with the stylus. That option is useful, but it can come into conflict with some of the new software features that are found on modern Galaxy smartphones and tablets today.

Circle to Search is one example of such software features. The Google-powered AI feature is available on select Galaxy devices running One UI 6.1 and is accessed by long pressing the home button or, in case you are using gesture navigation, by long pressing the bottom edge of the screen.

Out of the box, modern Galaxy smartphones come with the option to use the S Pen for navigation gestures disabled. For most users, this is actually a good thing, but what if you want the gestures to be enabled for both finger/touch and stylus input?

Here’s how to enable navigation gestures with S Pen

To make navigation gestures work with the S Pen, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your device.

Step 2: Go into the Display menu.

Step 4: Tap the Swipe gestures option if gestures aren’t already enabled, then tap the More options button.

Step 5: Here, disable the Block gestures with S Pen option.

On some older devices, especially those running Android 13 or earlier versions of the operating system, the Block gestures with S Pen option may be located in the Settings » Display » Navigation bar menu.

Samsung gestures may be better suited for the S Pen

Samsung smartphones and tablets launched before 2024 came with both Android’s stock navigation gestures and Samsung’s own solution. The latter is more suitable if you wish to have gestures enabled when using the S Pen.

Samsung’s gestures require you to swipe up from the bottom of the screen whether you wish to go to the home screen, access the recent apps screen, or go back. The back gesture in Android’s gesture system, on the other hand, requires swiping in from the left or right side of the display.

To switch between Android and Samsung’s gestures, open your device’s Settings app, go into the Display menu, select Navigation bar, tap Swipe gestures, and hit the More options button. Here, select Swipe from bottom for Samsung’s gestures or Swipe from sides and bottom for Android’s gestures.

If your device is running One UI 6.1, you will not have Samsung’s gestures as an option in the navigation bar settings. But you can change that by following our easy guide here.

Galaxy S24, S23, Fold 5, A54 and more get surprise update in Europe

An unexpected new update is rolling out to quite a few Samsung phones. The Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy S23 series (S23 FE included), Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, and Galaxy A54 are getting their second April software update in the European region.

This update appears to be exclusive to European users and has to do with 4G network compatibility. According to the changelog, which is common to all of these devices, “support for regional 4G TDD frequency band type has been updated.”

Samsung also notes that anyone who purchased their phone in Germany will not be able to use 4G networks on TDD (time division duplexing) frequency bands in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Switzerland, and Czech Republic. However, 4G networks in these markets mostly use the FDD (frequency division duplexing) frequency bands, so the update shouldn’t cause any issues for users.

Samsung doesn’t say why this update was released, and given how uncommon and unexpected it is, we don’t see a reason to speculate. Samsung could provide more information later on, however, and we have also reached out to the company for a comment.

Galaxy S24, S23, Fold 5, Flip 5, and A54 owners in Europe should be able to download the new update by opening their phone’s Settings » Software update menu and selecting Download and install. You may also want to check for a similar update if you have a device not mentioned here.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 spotted with outdated chip, 12GB RAM

In a few months, Samsung will likely unveil its next-generation foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Both upcoming phones are expected to use the top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. However, Samsung might have different plans, as the company is testing the Z Flip 6 with an outdated chip.

Will Galaxy Z Flip 6 use last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip?

A few days ago, the US variant of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 (SM-F741U) was spotted in Geekbench’s database featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (codename Pineapple) processor and 8GB RAM. Now, though, the same model number has been found using the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor (codename Kalama) and 12GB RAM.

As you can see in the screenshot above, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 appears to be running Android 14, as expected. It scored 1,794 points in Geekbench 6’s single-core CPU performance test and 4,486 points in the multi-core CPU performance test. This is a bit confusing, as Samsung has almost always used the latest top-of-the-line Snapdragon chips in its foldable phones.

It appears that Samsung is testing two Galaxy Z Flip 6 variants, one with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and the other with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. If the company ends up using last year’s chip, it would be an unexpected but logical move. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is still a powerful processor, can run most Galaxy AI features, and offers great power efficiency. Moreover, 12GB of RAM is a good upgrade, and it would be the first time a Galaxy Z Flip to have more than 8GB RAM.

It is also possible that someone edited the model number of a Galaxy S23 Ultra to make it appear as the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Things will only get clearer closer to the announcement of the Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra is on sale for its lowest price yet at Amazon and Best Buy

Both Amazon and Best Buy are selling unlocked models of Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra with 256GB of storage for $200 off the list price. That brings the smartphone down to $1,100 and marks the lowest price we’ve seen yet (outside of trade-in and carrier offers). Last month, all three handsets in the S24 lineup were on sale, with the base model going for $100 off and the S24+ and S24 Ultra both getting $150 discounts. This time, the top-end Ultra has an even bigger price cut and the S24+ is the same $150 off. The base model Galaxy S24 is only nine percent off, however, which is about $25 more that it was during that last sale.

We named the S24 Ultra the best premium Android smartphone in our guide and gave it a review score of 89 when it came out at the beginning of this year. This generation got a new titanium frame, one upgraded camera and, like everything else in 2024, a whole bunch of AI accoutrements. It has a snappy Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and a battery that lasted through 24 hours-plus of continuous video playback in our rundown tests and went for a good two days of regular use.

The four rear cameras stayed much the same as on the S23 Ultra, with the exception of the old 10x lens getting replaced with a 5x optical zoom and a higher-res 50-MP sensor, a move we found created a lens that was more practical in a wider variety of situations. The AI tools can proofread your texts, edit images and transcribe recordings. The display is one of the sharpest and brightest we’ve tested. Plus the built-in stylus is handy.

But even with a $200 discount, the S24 Ultra remains a very expensive phone. Our overall pick for an Android smartphone, Google’s Pixel 8 Pro, starts at $999, and is currently 20 percent off at Amazon and directly from Google, making it just $799. Engadget’s Sam Rutherford gave the Pixel 8 Pro a score of 93 upon its debut last October, praising its bright screen, speedy performance and “genuinely useful AI features.”

Galaxy phones start getting April 2024 Google Play System update

Google’s April 2024 Play System update is now rolling out for Samsung Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy S24 flagship lineup. The latter, as you might remember, was a bit late to receive the January 2024 Google Play System update a couple of months ago, but now it appears to be back on track with the schedule.

Google started rolling out the April 2024 Play System update a few days ago, on April 17. Now, you can download it on your Samsung Galaxy phone by opening the Settings app, accessing “About Phone,” tapping “Software information,” followed by “Google Play System update.”

You will then need to wait for the phone to finish checking whether a new Play System update is available for download. Assuming the new update reached your phone, it will install it and reboot.

Once done, you should access the Play System update menu again and double-check if everything is up to date, seeing how Galaxy phone users have sometimes received “fake” Play System updates in a loop due to a bug.

We tested the new update’s availability using a Galaxy S24+, and it all worked as expected. The phone now runs the April 2024 Play System update, as seen in the screenshot above.

As to what new features this update brings, Google’s changelog is a bit sparse. It only mentions a change for the Google Phone app, claiming that “With this new feature, you’ll be able to connect with your contacts immediately after you set up your new phone.”

An April 2024 Play service update also appears to have landed on Wear OS devices. The changelog states that supervised users will now be able to use a new dashboard to view parental control settings. We tried downloading the April 2024 Play System update on a Galaxy Watch 5 but had no success. It could start rolling out at a later date.

All in all, your mileage as far as the availability of the April 2024 Play System update will differ based on your location, Galaxy phone, and other factors. Nevertheless, you can always check for these types of updates manually using the steps we described above.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 to feature at least five color variants, up to 1TB storage

We are just three months away from the launch of Samsung’s next-generation foldable phones. We exclusively revealed a few weeks ago that Samsung will hold its next Galaxy Unpacked event in early July. Ahead of the official announcement of the Galaxy Z Fold 6, its color and storage variants have leaked.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 to come in two new colors

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 will likely come in at least five color options: Crafted Black, Light Pink, Navy, Silver Shadow, and White. Industry insider Ross Young revealed that Crafted Black and White color variants will be available in lower volume, so they could likely be online-exclusive colors. He also revealed that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be available in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage variants.

According to some rumors, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will have a significant design change compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 5. It will reportedly feature a thinner, wider, and shorter body, making its cover screen easier to use when closed. People have always criticized Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold phones for being too narrow to type when closed. Hopefully, Samsung will improve that and eliminate the issue with its upcoming phone.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is expected to use the same 50MP+12MP+10MP triple camera setup on the rear as its predecessor. It could feature a bigger battery, possibly resulting in longer battery life. It could debut running Android 14-based One UI 6.1.1 and get seven years of Android OS updates.

Some Samsung Galaxy owners are getting screen replacements to fix major issue

Last week, several Galaxy owners took to the internet to complain about seeing a distracting green line going down their phone’s screen. It was unclear if Samsung would address this issue or ignore it. As it turns out, the tech giant is going to help people fix the problem, but it’s not making it easy.

Industry insider Tarun Vats on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) recently spoke to an “official Samsung support channel” on WhatsApp. And they told Vats that the company will replace the display as well as the battery even if the “warranty has expired” – so long as you meet certain requirements.

Samsung Galaxy C55 launched in China with leather back, Snapdragon chip

Samsung has done something interesting after a long time. It has launched a mid-range smartphone with a leather back. The Galaxy C55 is a variant of the Galaxy M55 that was launched in Brazil and India a few weeks ago, but it has its own character in terms of look and feel.

The Galaxy C55 has been quietly introduced in China, but its pricing hasn’t been revealed yet. It has a stitched leather back design and is sold in Colorful Orange and Fashion Back colors. It has thin bezels and a slim form factor. This is a good phone for someone who wants a unique-looking phone and has Samsung’s feature-packed One UI software.

The rest of the phone’s hardware specifications remain similar to those of the Galaxy M55. It has a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED+ screen with Full HD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, 1,000 nits of peak brightness, HDR10+, and Vision Booster. It also has an under-display optical fingerprint reader, stereo speakers, and Dolby Atmos audio support.

It has a 50MP selfie camera on the front. In its rear-facing triple camera setup, you will find a 50MP primary camera with OIS, an 8MP ultrawide camera, and a 2MP macro camera. Both 50MP cameras on the phone can record 4K 30fps videos with electronic stabilization. With dual-recording, users can simultaneously record Full HD 1080p videos using front and rear cameras.

It is equipped with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor, 8GB/12GB RAM, 128GB/256GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot. It has GPS, 5G, a dual-SIM card slot, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and a USB Type-C port. It runs Android 14 and will get four major Android OS updates and five years of security updates.
