Apple to Invest $250M+ in Singapore Campus to Expand AI Roles

[ad_1]

Apple has announced over $250 million of investment to enhance its campus in Singapore’s Ang Mo Kio district, where it has earmarked new roles in artificial intelligence and other key functions.

singapore campus
Apple is framing the initiative as a continuation of Apple’s long-standing engagement in the region, which started in 1981 with a small team of 72 employees focusing on the Apple II. Today, the Singapore campus serves as a central hub for Apple in Asia, with a workforce of more than 3,600 contributing across all company functions including software, hardware, services, and customer support. The country is also home to three Apple Store locations.

“Singapore is truly a one-of-a-kind place, and we are proud of the connection we’ve built with this dynamic community of creators, learners, and dreamers,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “With our growing campus, Apple is writing a new chapter in our history here. Our Singapore teams have played an important role in enriching the lives of our customers — and we can’t wait for many more decades of innovation to come.”

Apple says the investment will focus on upgrading two buildings next to Apple’s existing facilities, integrating them into a unified campus that encourages collaboration among teams. This follows a decade of upgrades and expansion, including a 50% increase in the hardware technologies center since 2019.

The expanded campus will be powered entirely by renewable energy sources and aims for LEED Gold certification to align with its global commitment to sustainability, according to the company. Apple has been carbon neutral for its corporate operations since 2020 and has utilized 100% renewable energy since 2018.

Construction is expected to begin later this year. Apple says its presence supports over 60,000 jobs in Singapore through direct employment, its supply chain, and the iOS app economy, while the company collaborates with local educational institutions to foster innovation and technological development.

iOS 17.5 Might Expand ‘Found Moving With You’ Alerts to Third-Party Item Trackers

[ad_1]

Apple and Google last year jointly announced a proposed industry specification to help combat the misuse of Bluetooth item trackers for unwanted tracking of individuals. As part of this initiative, Apple promised to expand AirTag-like “Found Moving With You” alerts to third-party item trackers in a future software update, which may be iOS 17.5.

AirTag and iPhone Notification Feature
MacRumors contributor Steve Moser uncovered several new references to alerts for third-party item trackers in the first beta of iOS 17.5, released this week. For example: “You can disable this item and stop it from sharing its location with the owner. To do this, follow the instructions provided on a website by the manufacturer of this item.”

Tile, Chipolo, Samsung, Eufy, and Pebblebee all expressed support for the industry specification, according to Apple’s announcement last year.

iOS 17.5 is expected to be released to the public in May.

Apple Watch Topographic Maps Could Expand to iPhone in iOS 18

[ad_1]

Apple appears to be gearing up to add topographic maps to the Apple Maps apps in iOS 18, macOS 15, and visionOS 2, according to code reviewed by MacRumors.

watchos 10 maps app
First introduced with watchOS 10, topographic maps include trails, contour lines, elevation, and points of interest, features that are of use for hiking and other outdoor activities where accurate navigation is essential.

Since debuting topographic maps, Apple has been expanding support throughout the United States, and this year, Apple may be ready to bring it to iOS, macOS, and ‌visionOS‌.

Backend topographic maps code was introduced last year, but only ‌watchOS 10‌ had the feature. The code was dormant on iOS and macOS at that time, but in the backend files for ‌iOS 18‌, macOS 15, and ‌visionOS‌ 2, the code is active, suggesting an expansion.

The possibility of topographic maps follows our report yesterday on another possible ‌Apple Maps‌ feature, support for custom routes. With custom routes, users will presumably be able to create their own routes without being limited to Apple’s pre-selected options.

‌‌iOS 18‌‌ will be introduced at the Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, June 10, and it appears there will be quite a few new features for ‌Apple Maps‌. For more details about the update, check out our iOS 18 roundup.

(Thanks, Nicolás!)

Adoption of the feature has been slow since Apple first announced it in September 2021, with IDs in the Wallet app only available in Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, and Georgia so far. Two years ago, Apple shared a list of additional states committed to supporting the feature in the future, but none of them have revealed any plans yet.

  • Hawaii
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah

Apple said the feature would also be supported in Puerto Rico.

In 2021, Apple said it was “already in discussions with many more states” and hoped to offer the feature nationwide in the future.

It is unclear if Apple plans to expand the feature to other countries.

Apple says travelers should refer to TSA checkpoint signage to confirm availability of the feature.

Apple’s website says IDs in the Wallet app can also be used to show proof of age or identity at “select businesses and venues,” but adoption is limited.

Samsung plans to expand sales of its OLED TVs

[ad_1]

Last updated: March 13th, 2024 at 09:43 UTC+01:00

Samsung entered the OLED TV market quite late. Despite being a decade late to the market, Samsung has been rising through the ranks quickly. This year, the company expanded its OLED TV lineup, and it is planning to convert that into higher sales.

Samsung has a plan to match LG in OLED TV sales

Earlier today, Samsung held the ‘Unbox & Discover 2024′ promotional event ahead of the launch of its 2024 TV lineup in South Korea. During the event, the head of Samsung’s TV business said that its market share in South Korea’s OLED TV market is almost as much as that of its rival LG. Globally, Samsung has a 23% revenue share in the OLED TV market, and it plans to reduce that gap in 2024.

Samsung S95D QD-OLED TV South Korea Unbox And Discover 2024 Event

Yong Seok-woo, President and Head of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business, said, “Over the past two years, our OLED TVs have experienced rapid growth, and our market share has grown to nearly 23 percent. Our expanded OLED TV lineup for this year will help us narrow the gap in the market.” He added, “Our 77-inch OLED TVs’ market share has grown to nearly match the competitor in the Korean market. We will continue to prioritize premium, large-screen OLED TVs to expand our share.

Over the past two years, Samsung has sold over two million OLED TVs, while LG shipped three million last year. If you average those numbers, LG sells three times more OLED TVs than Samsung. However, this year, Samsung has added more models and sizes to its OLED TV lineup, and buyers now have more choices. Given Samsung’s brand recognition, more people will likely buy OLED TVs from the company.

You can watch our video of Samsung’s new OLED TV lineup that was showcased at CES 2024 below.

In 2022, Samsung had OLED TVs in two sizes: 55-inch and 65-inch. In 2023, Samsung expanded its lineup to include 77-inch and 83-inch OLED TVs. This year, the company is selling OLED TVs in several sizes and models, ranging from 48 inches to 83 inches. So, people have more choices and more affordable options.

In fact, Samsung’s 48-inch and 83-inch OLED TVs use LG Display’s OLED panels. Since Samsung Display is new to the market with its QD-OLED panels, it still can’t make panels in as many sizes as LG Display. So, Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display business decided to buy 48-inch and 83-inch OLED panels from LG Display.

50+ Midjourney art styles to expand your AI creativity further

Midjourney styles for extra creativity

If you would like to expand your skills and abilities when creating images, photographs and artwork using AI tools such as Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, Leonardo AI and others. This comprehensive guide of Midjourney styles will help you easily expand your AI art creativity in new directions.

Allowing you to create a wide variety of different imagery with just a few easy to remember style prompts and keywords. Although these have been used dominantly in Midjourney they can be used in any AI art generator to help you explore new and fascinating areas you may not have thought of.

With a plethora of styles that range from traditional techniques like oil painting and Japanese ink art to modern digital innovations like glitch art and pointillism, AI  art styles serve as an extensive palette of artistic expressions. They not only offer inspiration but also challenge the AI algorithms to adapt and evolve, when trying to recreate and capture individual style.

illustration AI art styles

  • Isometric Anime: Unlike traditional anime that is usually presented in a 2D perspective, Isometric Anime employs an isometric viewpoint, which is a form of axonometric projection. This gives the illustration a pseudo-3D effect without requiring complex 3D modeling. The style is often used in video games and animations to create a more immersive environment while retaining the charm and simplicity of 2D art.
  • Analytic Drawing: Analytic drawing is less about capturing the likeness of a subject and more about understanding its structural integrity. Artists dissect the subject into its basic geometric shapes, lines, and angles, analyzing how the parts relate to each other and the whole. This method is often used in scientific illustration and architectural sketching but can also be a useful exercise for artists to improve their understanding of form and volume.
  • Double Exposure: Originating from the realm of photography, double exposure in art involves the superimposition of two separate images to create a single composition. The juxtaposition can serve various purposes like storytelling, symbolism, or the creation of abstract visuals. For instance, an image of a city skyline superimposed over a person’s silhouette might convey the person’s relationship with the city.
  • 3D Illustration: Unlike traditional 2D illustrations, 3D illustrations are created in software that allows for three-dimensional modeling. The resulting images can be rendered to appear extremely lifelike, complete with textures, shadows, and perspective. This form of illustration is commonly used in technical fields, gaming, and film, but it’s also becoming more prevalent in advertising and graphic design.
  • Isometric Illustration: While similar to Isometric Anime, Isometric Illustration is not restricted to characters and can include objects, landscapes, and architectural forms. The isometric perspective allows for a unique vantage point, often used in technical drawings and video games. It’s also popular in infographics where the goal is to present data in a visually engaging manner.
  • Futuristic Style: This style envisions the future through art, often characterized by advanced technology, alternative realities, or speculative evolution. Elements like cybernetics, space exploration, and advanced machinery are common. Futuristic art often overlaps with genres like science fiction and cyberpunk, serving both as a form of escapism and a critique of current societal trends.
  • Ornamental Watercolor: Traditional watercolor techniques are given an ornate twist in this style. Artists may incorporate complex patterns, gold leaf, or intricate borders into their compositions. The subject matter commonly includes natural elements, mythological creatures, or detailed portraits. This style is often found in decorative art, book illustrations, and even in modern tattoo designs.
  • Dark Fantasy: Dark Fantasy combines elements of fantasy with darker, horrific themes, often resulting in worlds filled with mythical creatures, magic, and malevolent forces. The art is detailed, with a focus on creating atmosphere and emotion, often through the use of dark colors, heavy shadowing, and intricate backgrounds. This style is popular in literature, video games, and film.
  • Paper Cut Craft: This is a form of craft art where paper is cut, rather than drawn upon, to create images. Artists often layer multiple pieces to create depth and shadows. The art form has roots in traditional Chinese and Jewish cultures and has found modern applications in everything from advertising to stencil graffiti.
  • Paper Quilling: This art form involves rolling, shaping, and gluing strips of paper to create intricate designs. The paper is coiled into various shapes like circles, squares, and triangles, and then arranged to form patterns or images. This technique is often used for decorative purposes like greeting cards, or to create detailed mosaics and wall art.

Other articles we have written that you may find of interest on the subject of AI art

  • Patchwork Collage: This art style is a form of assemblage that involves cutting and combining different pieces of material—often fabric, but also paper, metal, or wood—to create a larger composition. Each piece acts like a pixel or a brushstroke, contributing to the overall image or pattern. This technique has roots in quilting and folk art but has also been adopted by contemporary artists to make bold, textural works.
  • Iridescent: Iridescent art is characterized by lustrous, changing colors that appear differently depending on the angle of view or illumination. Artists may use various materials, such as iridescent paints or layered glass, to achieve this shimmering effect. The style is often used in sculpture and installation art but can also be seen in digital art forms.
  • Ukiyo-e Art: Ukiyo-e is a traditional Japanese art form that flourished from the 17th to the 19th century. The style primarily features woodblock prints and paintings that focus on landscapes, history, kabuki theater, and beautiful women. Distinctive features include a bold outline and the use of flat areas of color. The art form has greatly influenced Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists, as well as modern manga and anime.
  • Watercolor Sketch: Unlike more detailed watercolor paintings, watercolor sketches are often loose and quick, capturing the essence of a scene or subject in a spontaneous manner. Artists use a wet-on-wet or wet-on-dry technique to apply the paint, allowing for the colors to blend naturally. This style is popular for outdoor sketching, travel journals, and preparatory studies.
  • Op Art: Optical Art, or Op Art, is a style of visual art that makes use of optical illusions to engage the viewer. Patterns, shapes, and colors are strategically placed to create effects such as vibrating, pulsing, or movement. Artists like Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely are well-known for their contributions to this art movement, which gained prominence in the 1960s.
  • Japanese Ink: Also known as Sumi-e or Ink Wash Painting, this traditional Japanese art style involves the use of black ink applied with a brush. The focus is on the simplicity of lines and forms, capturing the spirit rather than the likeness of the subject. This art form is closely related to the practice of calligraphy and often incorporates poetic inscriptions.
  • Pastel Drawing: This style employs soft pastel sticks, which are pigment held together with a gum or resin binder. The medium allows for vibrant yet soft colors, and is especially suited for capturing the nuances of light and texture in portraits and landscapes. Artists like Edgar Degas were known for their mastery of this medium.
  • Graffiti Art: Originating from street culture, graffiti art is often a form of social or political expression. While sometimes considered vandalism when done without permission, it has gained recognition as a legitimate art form and can be seen in galleries and exhibitions. Techniques include tagging, stenciling, and the use of aerosol sprays.

50+ Midjourney styles to expand your AI creativity

  • Dripping Art: Popularized by artists like Jackson Pollock, this technique involves dripping or splattering paint onto a canvas, usually laid flat on the ground. The resulting patterns are often chaotic and abstract, with the artist incorporating the randomness and fluidity of the medium into the work.
  • Stained Glass: This art form involves cutting pieces of colored glass and assembling them into a design, usually held together by strips of lead. While most commonly seen in church windows, stained glass is also used in secular settings and in more modern, abstract compositions.
  • Oil Painting: This classic art form uses oil-based paints on canvas to create works known for their depth, texture, and luminosity.
