The super-size iPad Air supposedly coming in a few weeks could come with a surprise: mini-LED backlights for the screen. This is the same type already in the largest iPad Pro.

It’s another reason for people to look forward to this tablet, which is expected in early May.

Leak of 12.9-inch iPad Air with mini-LED comes out of the blue

mini-LED screens use thousands of tiny LEDs to provide a backlight for the LCD that can illuminate very specific areas. The result is higher contrast, blacker blacks, improved brightness and better power efficiency.

The tech costs more than traditional backlights, so Apple has so far reserved it for high-end “Pro” products. But that’s reportedly about to change.

The upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Air will include mini-LED panels left over from making the current iPad Pro, according to Ross Young. He’s CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, and has reliable inside sources at Apple’s component-makers.

The panels will be left over because the soon-to-released version of the iPad Pro will have an OLED screen instead that has no need for backlights.

If this report is correct, the 2024 iPad Air will join two other existing Apple products with a mini-LED display: the 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

While there’s been no mention connecting the tablet with mini-LED before, this leak has to be taken seriously — Young has an excellent track record. That includes correctly predicting that all iPhone 15 models would include the Dynamic Island a solid year before the handset’s launch.

More about the 2024 iPad Air

Whether the backlights will change or not, the big news about the 2024 iPad Air is that there’ll be a 12.9-inch option. The previous largest version came with a 10.9-inch display.

And that’s not the only change. The current iPad Air 5 from 2022 runs an Apple M1 processor that debuted in 2020.  The upcoming version of each tablet reportedly will jump to the M3 that premiered in the latest MacBook Air.

The 2024 iPad Air launch is expected on Monday, May 6. Pricing for the 12.9- and 10.9-inch versions is currently unknown.

12.9-Inch iPad Air Now Rumored to Feature Mini-LED Display

The rumored 12.9-inch iPad Air that is expected to be announced in May will be equipped with a mini-LED display like the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro, according to Ross Young, CEO of research firm Display Supply Chain Consultants. The existing 10.9-inch iPad Air is equipped with a standard LCD panel, and the move to mini-LED technology for the 12.9-inch model would provide increased brightness for HDR content, deeper blacks, and more.

Young revealed this information in a post shared on social media platform X today. He said the 12.9-inch iPad Air will be using leftover mini-LED display panels from the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, and he touted lower power consumption as another benefit.

Given that Apple does not have existing inventory of 10.9-inch mini-LED display panels, it is likely that the smaller iPad Air will remain equipped with an LCD panel.

Meanwhile, the next iPad Pro models are widely expected to transition to OLED displays, with would eliminate backlighting to allow for higher contrast ratio with true blacks, and provide other enhancements compared to LCD and mini-LED technologies. The new iPad Pro models are also expected to be announced in May.

iPhone 17 Plus might sport a smaller display than iPhone 15 Plus

The 2025 iPhone 17 Plus could sport a smaller screen than previous Plus models. This could make the phone more compact and fit better in Apple’s lineup.

Apple currently uses a 6.7-inch OLED panel on the iPhone 15 Plus. This is the same display size as the iPhone 15 Pro Max, albeit the latter uses a superior 120Hz panel.

iPhone 17 Plus could get a screen size reduction

Rumors suggest Apple plans to increase the display size of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max by 0.2 inches this year. So, the iPhone 16 Pro should ship with a 6.3-inch screen, while the Pro Max could sport a 6.9-inch panel.

This will be followed by the iPhone 17 Plus using a display smaller-than-6.7-inches in the following year. Such a move from Apple can help widen the gap between its large Pro and non-Pro iPhone models.

The leak from display analyst Ross Young is light on other details. So, there’s no clarity on how much the iPhone 17 Plus display will shrink in 2025. It also does not mention other planned improvements that Apple might be considering for the panel.

A 6.5-inch iPhone 17 Plus would sit nicely in Apple’s lineup

Apple’s current iPhone lineup consists of four models, but there are two screen size options: 6.1 and 6.7 inches.

If the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max get a screen size bump to 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, an iPhone 17 Plus with a 6.5-inch display would be a perfect fit in the lineup. It will also give users four screen size options to choose from: 6.1, 6.3, 6.5, and 6.7 inches.

This would also fit nicely with the rumor that Apple is considering using 120Hz ProMotion displays with always-on display support across its entire iPhone 17 lineup.

Software updates causing green line display issues on some Galaxy phones

Many Galaxy smartphone users have started complaining of display issues after installing a software update. This issue has been present on Samsung phones for a couple of years, and the company hasn’t done anything concrete to solve it. The issue appears so common that Galaxy users fear installing a new update on their phones.

Several Galaxy users have started complaining of display-related issues on their phones with OLED screens. After installing a software update, a green or pink line appeared on their phones. This issue isn’t limited to a few phones or models. It seems widespread, and we’ve seen this issue appear on the Galaxy A73, Galaxy M21, Galaxy M52 5G, Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy S22 series, and Galaxy Z Flip 3. Some users claim the issue appeared after installing One UI 6.0 or the April 2024 security update.

There could be more phones suffering from this issue, but it isn’t just Galaxy devices that are facing this issue. Even phones from Motorola, OnePlus, Vivo, and Xiaomi seem to have the same issue, but the issue appears widespread among Samsung phones.

The issue appeared after installing a software update in most of these instances. This has horrified users so much that people have started recording videos while installing new software updates on their phones. Users hope to submit their videos to after-sales service stores to prove that the issue (if it appears) wasn’t caused by physical damage.

This isn’t a minor issue, as an OLED display panel is among a smartphone’s most costly components. Sometimes, the OLED panel costs almost half the phone’s original price. Even after so many complaints, Samsung doesn’t seem to have issued a wider circular to after-sales service centers to replace display panels on affected phones for free. This has caused consumers to distrust Samsung.

Whether the issue is related to the OLED panel itself, the display cable, or a glitch in the software update system, Samsung needs to issue a statement about this problem as soon as possible if it wants consumers to trust the brand again.

Dell curved 4K monitor makes fine external display

A Dell curved 4K monitor — especially a big 40-incher — can make an excellent external display, if today’s featured MacBook Air and MacBook Pro setup is any indication. The user put the dramatic display together with a 27-inch 4K monitor after trying two other configurations.

40-inch Dell curved 4K monitor serves M2 and M3 MacBooks

Redditor chrisonhismac showcased the newly upgraded setup in a post entitled, “V3 of my setup.” He also shared his first version and his second version.

So now he runs two powerful Apple laptops. His personal one is a 15-inch M2 MacBook Air with 24GB of unified memory and a 1TB SSD. And his work provided him with a 16-inch M3 Max MacBook Pro with a whopping 95GB of memory and a 1TB SSD.

He uses the two slick laptops with two fine 4K displays. First, his own is a big 40-inch Dell UltraSharp U4025QW curved 4K display he got after trying two other configurations. And second, his work provided him with a 27-inch LG UltraFine 4K monitor.

Then he rounds out his setup with a bunch of other good gear — Logitech C920 webcam, a Keychron Q3 Pro custom mechanical keyboard, a Logitech MX Master 3S wireless mouse, a Blue Yeti USB microphone and an Elgato Stream Deck.

Work laptop trumps personal laptop, but reverse it true of displays

What MacBook Air owner would object to their work handing them a killer laptop like an M3 Max MacBook Pro packed with memory and a nice 4K display like the LG? But as far as the displays go, it’s Chris’ personal one, the 40-inch Dell U4025QW, that caught our attention, along with commenters on the post. 

“How’s the 4025 working out for you?” a commenter asked. “Happy with it?”

“It only arrived on Wednesday and I haven’t spent any long sessions with it yet,” Chris replied. “Text clarity is amazing vs the old Dell 38-inch I had. No complaints.”

Another commenter asked about whether the Dell and LG would be too wide if both were in landscape mode (LG is in portrait). Chris’s reply made the LG display out to be essentially an unnecessary add-on. 

“It’s for Slack, Spotify and terminal, really,” he said of the LG display. “I would say its nice to have but not critical. Don’t really notice the difference between 120Hz and 60Hz to be honest. I don’t game. If you can get old u4021qw on a deal, may be worth it.”

Why ditch dual 32-inch displays?

Another person looked to Chris’s previous display configuration with two 32-inch Dell displays.

“Why didn’t you like the 2x 32s from v2? I’m in the same boat and about to do v3 with a 32-inch main work monitor and a vertical as well, so just curious of your rationale,” they asked.

“I did — i used that for close to three years,” Chris replied. “I just didn’t use all of the screens. Had to run DisplayLink adapters to use my MacBook Air. Moving jobs game me new budget to try something new.”

“How Is the Dell 40-inch with a Mac?” a commenter asked. “I’m afraid of the scaling issues.”

“Zero issues with this one,” Chris replied. “The old 38 [-inch Dell] was terrible.”

iPadOS 17.5 beta confirms next-gen iPad Pro’s OLED display

Apple’s new iPad Pro could launch in early May with updated internals and a refreshed design. All rumors surrounding Apple’s next premium tablet indicate it will feature OLED displays.

The first iPadOS 17.5 beta seems to confirm this, as it contains four new display firmware for unreleased iPad models.

9to5Mac did some code digging in the recently released iPadOS 17.5 beta and found multiple references to unreleased iPads. Additionally, they found four new display firmware for iPad16,3, iPad16,4, iPad16,5, and iPad16,6. Apparently, these four models are the upcoming iPad Pro, separated by cellular and Wi-Fi options.

Based on the references, the report says Apple’s 2024 iPad Pro lineup will use OLED displays, with different suppliers for the 11-inch and 12.9-inch models.

Apple seemingly had to delay the launch of its new iPad Pro lineup due to the complex OLED panels. The tablets are now apparently scheduled for launch in the second week of May. Apple will soon start shipping marketing materials to its retail stores to prepare for the new iPad’s launch.

The 2024 iPad Pro’s OLED panels should provide higher brightness levels with better colors, contrast, and clarity.

12.9-inch iPad Air might also launch soon

Apple should also unveil a new 12.9-inch iPad Air alongside the OLED iPad Pro. Rumors suggest the OLED iPad Pros will cost significantly more than their predecessors, so a 12.9-inch Air should fill the gap caused by the price hike.

iPadOS 17.5 beta also contains references to an unreleased Apple Pencil. It will seemingly support a new “squeeze” gesture. Previous leaks indicate the next-gen Apple Pencil will have Find My integration, with a patent filing popping up about this way back in May 2023.

In addition to the new iPad Pro, Apple is working on a refresh for the iPad mini and low-cost iPad. The two models could launch towards the end of the year and sport minor internal spec bumps.

Next Apple Watch Could Feature More Power Efficient OLED Display

Apple plans to use new low-energy OLED panel technology in the next Apple Watch to further reduce the power consumption of its always-on display, claims a new report out of Korea.

According to The Elec, Apple will adopt new low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) technology for its upcoming Apple Watch, which is scheduled to be released in the second half of this year.

LPTO TFT is a method of applying oxide on the driving TFT and the switching transistors behind each pixel. Switching transistors control the voltage applied to the liquid crystal cells, allowing precise control of the amount of light that passes through each pixel.

Existing Apple Watch OLED displays use LPTO TFT in only a few switching transistors, and rely on low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) technology for the majority of transistors as well as the driving TFT.

Using oxide instead of LTPS for the driving TFT and more of the switching transistors means that oxide alone is responsible for the current running through the majority of transistors that connect directly to the OLED pixel. In the new LTPO OLED application, increased use of oxide means lower leakage current and more stable operation at low refresh rates, resulting in overall power savings.

The downside is that the technique means more complication in the manufacturing of the TFT substrates. According to the report, LG Display is expected to take the lead in the development of the new LPTO OLED technology. Meanwhile, Samsung is participating in a development project that should see it join Apple’s LPTO OLED supply chain in time for next year’s Apple Watch.

This has led to industry speculation that Apple is planning to expand the use of LPTO OLED technology to other products such as the iPhone. The current iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus use LTPS panels, while Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro models use the more advanced LTPO panels, which support variable refresh rates.

Apple is expected to retain the use of the less advanced LTPS panels in this year’s iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus to maintain differentiation between its standard and Pro models. However, next year’s iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus are expected to adopt the same technology, which would mean Apple’s 2025 iPhone series will be the first of its kind to feature ProMotion and always-on displays across the lineup.
