Prime Video movie of the day: Death Race sees Jason Statham do dystopia in an action-packed smash-em-up

Death Race has been described as “mindless” and “violent”, and that’s meant as a criticism. But if you’re a fan of high-octane action movies, mindless violence might be just the thing you’re looking to stream on Prime Video. And few actors do mindless violence as well as Jason Statham, who gets the lead role here.

Statham plays three-time speedway champion Jensen Ames who finds himself locked up in the country’s toughest prison for – wait for it – a crime he didn’t commit. Facing life in a jail so grim it could be an English holiday destination, Ames’ future looks bleak until the warden gives him a choice: rot in jail forever, or race in the ‘Death Race’ and win his freedom. And let’s face it, with a name like Death Race we’re not talking Mario Kart here.

The Managed Detection and Response Analyst Report for 2023 details that more than one in five (22.9%) of high-severity incidents in 2023 were reported by the government sector, closely followed by the IT sector (15.4%).

I spent a day with Rabbit r1 and it’s a beautiful mess that I’m not sure anyone needs

When I first tried the iPhone 17 years ago, I described it as a “think-do” device. It was a beautiful yet complex piece of technology so intuitive that it required no manual or real guidance from anyone. Somehow, in the development of the Rabbit r1 pocketable AI assistant, Rabbit missed this lesson and delivered a beautiful mess.

There is something compelling about the 3-in x 3-in x 0.5-in, 115g, pocket-friendly gadget. It looks like half a phone or a device that might be at home in the Fallout TV show’s pre-apocalyptic world.

Prime Video movie of the day: Road House is an action-packed remake of the ’80s cult classic

When the news of a Road House remake was announced, fans of the original movie (including some on the TechRadar team) weren’t exactly happy. The ’80s film, which starred Patrick Swayze, is one of those good/bad movies that attracts a very devoted following – and that following wasn’t keen on anybody stepping into Swayze’s shoes. But the remake turns out to be more than just a photocopy; as The Guardian says, it’s both rowdy and campy.

The 2024 version stars Jake Gyllenhall as Elwood Dalton, a bouncer with a dark past, and moves the setting from Missouri to the Florida Keys. There, Elwood makes a living from amateur fights with the likes of Post Malone and ends up working at the titular road house. And that’s where the action happens.

Netflix movie of the day: Baby Driver is an incredible action movie with a stunning soundtrack and 92% on Rotten Tomatoes

The conceit behind Baby Driver – a getaway driver uses his iPod playlists to drown out his tinnitus, thereby providing the soundtrack to his car chases – is really smart, and works incredibly well: the film sounds as good as it looks, and it looks amazing. If you’re in the mood for an action-packed event with spectacular stunt work, effective CGI, and lots of thrills and spills, it’s a five-star experience – and it’s on Netflix.

Ansel Elgort is the Baby of the title, and while he’s tired of the life he has no choice but to take on one more job from criminal Doc, played by Kevin Spacey. As you’d expect, things promptly go off the rails – it wouldn’t be much of a movie otherwise – and the result was what RogerEbert.com described as “as much fun as you’re going to have in a movie theater this year.” And now you can have the same fun from the comfort of your couch.

Nobody wants to be left with a dead smartphone, moms included, but having to carry a cable alongside a portable battery can be a hassle. She’ll need to own an iPhone 15 or Android handset to make use of that cable, and the battery itself isn’t the absolute fastest thing out there. But its 30W power output is enough to top up Apple’s latest phones at full speed, and its 10,000mAh capacity is enough to supply about two refills. There’s a little display that shows its current charging status as well, and at four inches tall and roughly half a pound, it’s easy to toss in a bag. Most of the meditations let you choose between different instructors, and we’ve found the multi-step courses to gradually build on themselves well. All of it comes in an app that’s clean and easy to navigate. Headspace costs $70/year for an annual subscription, so it may not be something your mom wants to stick with forever. JBL’s Flip 6 is about the size of a crowler and easily relocates with me so I can listen to music as I take care of what needs doing. The portable Bluetooth speaker made the list in our buyer’s guide because it puts out a good amount of volume for its size and delivers balanced sound with crisp highs and solid lows. I like how it fills a room but you can still pick out the layers in a Grouper track and enjoy the lows on a Low album without muddiness. Stellar Blade graffiti that appeared to reference a racial slur by coincidence was ‘unintentional’ says Sony and will be removed with the day one patch

Sony has confirmed that the Stellar Blade in-game art alluding to a racial slur will be patched out with a day one update, saying it was “unintentional.”

As first reported by IGN, it was discovered that in the forthcoming action role-playing game from Shift Up Corporation, there features a coincidental reference to a racial slur that appears as graffiti.

Nikon Z 40mm f/2 review: this cheap, modern ‘nifty forty’ has been my every day lens for over a year and it hasn’t let me down

Two-minute review

Nikon’s Nikkor Z 40mm f/2 is one of two lightweight, inexpensive prime lenses for the Z-mount – the other being the wider 28mm f/2.8. 

At 40mm, it’s currently the closest match to the ‘nifty fifty’ lenses of old, aiming to provide a lightweight lens with a compact footprint, flexible focal length, and a relatively fast aperture. Above all, it’s cheap – really cheap for a proprietary lens sitting at just £259 / $289 /AU$310 new. Compared to the Nikon S 50mm f/1.8 or the S 35mm f/1.8, the 40mm comes in at under half the price while still offering some form of weather sealing and excellent performance.

Record Store Day 2024 – the full list, plus five essential albums to pick up

Record Store Day 2024 is one the most anticipated events for any music fan, and there’s no doubt that eager vinyl record collectors have been preparing for this day since the full Record Store Day list was dropped in February.

The event takes place on Saturday April 20 and will see music fans around the world flocking to their local record shops to score exclusive pressings and region-specific LPs. And with Discogs’ partnership with Record Store Day, you’ll have two chances to partake in this year’s event.

Despite the queen of vinyl variants, Taylor Swift, not making an appearance in this year’s list, there’s a plethora of other albums, soundtracks, and live recordings that will be available as limited editions. But a word of caution; most record stores work on a first come first serve basis, so it’s wise to check your local store’s opening times and plan to queue accordingly. 

To celebrate one of the most exciting days in music, I’ve compiled a list of five albums from this year’s Record Store Day list that are essential for any music lover’s library. Not only are these albums great from beginning to end, but they’ve each had a significant impact on fans and culture alike…

Rumours was the second album I bought on vinyl after Lorde’s Pure Heroine, not because I was a huge Fleetwood Mac fan at the time, but because it’s an album I knew was quintessential to any collection. 

This album was conceived at a time when the band’s members couldn’t bear to be in the same room as each other. Love complications between Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham served as one of the driving forces behind the album’s brutally honest lyricism in songs like Dreams and Second Hand News, alongside John and Christine McVie’s divorce. 

Its raw emotion is the reason why it’s still loved by music fans nearly 50 years after its release, and at Record Store Day 2024, it’s being released once again but in picture disc format. 

Dawn FM was one of the most memorable albums of 2022, but it was The Weeknd’s sold-out After Hours til Dawn stadium tour that showed his powerhouse status. 

Live albums can be hit or miss, depending on how the artist plays around with the arrangement of their studio songs – but Live at SoFi Stadium is a live album I find myself reverting back to now and then. Not only is the setlist packed with catchy oldies like The Hills and Wicked Games, but its songs like Sacrifice that show how hard a song can hit when played live. That’s all down to its responsive bass and elongated intro that perfectly builds suspension before the beat drops.  

The oldest entry in our list comes from Black Sabbath and their second studio album Paranoid, which is regarded as one of the most influential albums in heavy metal. And it’s back for Record Store Day 2024, over 50 years since its release on a vibrant pink splatter vinyl. 

Much like Rumours, Black Sabbath’s Paranoid has cemented itself as a vinyl record staple but for its own reasons – one being that it set the gold standard for the heavy metal genre. It houses several of Black Sabbath’s most credited singles from the title track, to Iron Man and War Pigs, which still make for great additions to blockbuster movie soundtracks.  

While I lean more towards Ware’s neo-disco and funk records What’s Your Pleasure? (2020) and That! Feels Good (2023), those albums would not exist if it weren’t for her early work. 

The production on Tough Love is very early-to-mid 2010s coded, but the subtlety of funky bass guitars and string accompaniments hint at the direction Jessie Ware has been headed all this time. For Record Store Day 2024, Ware brings you the 10th anniversary edition of the album, featuring 2 LPs pressed on solid white vinyl with bonus tracks.  

2023 didn’t live up to the albums that 2022 gave us, but Gorillaz’s eighth studio album Cracker Island was one of my saving graces that year – after Lana Del Rey and Caroline Polacheck, of course. 

Cracker Island is very much an ‘LA-themed’ album, with topics such as technology, influencer culture, and the internet building the foundation of the album’s message. But it’s the album’s features that make it a stand-out record, one that invites the musical influences of funkier artists like Thundercat and Tame Impala, not to forget the legendary Stevie Nicks on one of my favorite songs, Oil. 

The deluxe edition of Cracker Island is out this Record Store Day, with six additional tracks and alternative cover art pressed on pink and magenta vinyl.
