Audio brand Sonos is expanding the reach of its Voice Control software to now support Spotify, allowing users to verbally command the streaming service.

All you have to do to control the app, according to the company, is to say the words “Hey Sonos, play Spotify” into one of the brand’s supported speakers. That’s literally it. Doing so will play one of your Spotify playlists at random. If you want the software to play a specific playlist, you’ll have to mention it by name, like “Discover Weekly,” for example. The feature does extend beyond just being a glorified play button, as it can also be used to help manage your library.

You can instruct Sonos to add certain songs to a playlist. It can also like or dislike tracks for you with the right command. Telling it “Hey Sonos, I like this song” will make the AI save that piece of music into your account’s ‘Liked Songs.’

Additionally, Voice Control can play specific genres or subgenres of music, be it jazz or classic alternative from the 1990s. You don’t have to be super specific; Spotify’s algorithm has a good understanding of what people are looking for.

Security and availability

It’s worth mentioning commands are processed locally on your Sonos speaker to ensure “fast response times and easy follow-ups”. The company also states no audio – be it from your voice or the surrounding environment – will be saved on any cloud server or listened to by some random third-party.

Now, there are two ways to connect a Sonos speaker to Spotify. You can either manually choose Spotify to be the default source or make the platform be the most prominent music service played through the speaker. Users won’t have to login or make any changes to the settings.

It’s unknown if Voice Control will learn your listening habits. That is, if a Sonos device notices you frequently access Spotify, will it automatically adjust music sources?

Game server hosting provider Shockbyte has just announced a new and improved control panel, promising faster load times, new features, and a more user-friendly environment.

In a press release shared with TechRadar earlier this week, Shockbyte claims that its new control panel is 185% faster, on average, than the previous panel. Now, page load times will be reduced to 150ms, while providing a direct connection to players’ servers for live, instant server information.

Setting up and controlling the servers should also be easier and more streamlined. Server activation is now “superfast”, as they put it, while installing game mods, managing server files, inviting friends to co-host, or transferring server regions, should be improved thanks to the “minimal-click backend”.

Open Beta

Shockbyte has also introduced a new Instances feature, which will allow players to easily switch between different versions or game modes within the same server. Furthermore, users can expect advanced port management, database management, remote console commands, one-click commands, day/night mode, and more.

With this iteration of the Shockbyte Control Panel, the team wanted to create the “fastest, simplest, and most secure server hosting tool ever made,” commented the company’s Managing Director, Mitch Smith. “The number of clicks, speed, customization, and control over your server has been streamlined to make the Shockbyte Control Panel an accessible tool for veteran server hosts and newcomers to hosting alike.”

The new offering is now in Open Beta and free to use in the days leading up to the official launch. The company did not say when that might be, and it will probably depend on the performance, and popularity, of the new tool in Beta mode.

I had My first-ever professional massage last December during a spa day with some friends. Everyone opted for a traditional massage, which required a preliminary consultation. They disrobed, and the massage took place in a private room. I opted for a shiatsu massage—a clothed experience in a semiprivate area, and while I felt physically relaxed afterward, I didn’t have the best time. My limbs were stretched painfully too far, and I couldn’t wait for it to be over.

So I was intrigued when I learned about Aescape, a fully automated massage table. The contraption is equipped with two robot arms on each side of the table and will sit right at home in any sci-fi flick’s medical examination room. I wouldn’t say it gives off zen vibes, but I was willing to look past the tech because it offers complete privacy—there’s no other human in the room during your massage.

The entire experience is designed to be on-demand. Using Aescape’s companion app, you can browse different massage options and book a session based on available tables in your area. I tried it out at Aescape’s headquarters in New York City, and the company has partnered with Equinox to launch its massage tables in 10 locations across New York City in May. (You don’t have to be an Equinox member to sign up for a session.) The company didn’t specify when or if the experience will come to other cities in the US, but it says it plans to add other locations such as hotels and spas in the future. Each session starts at $60.

An Aescape massage has the same setup process no matter which location you book. Once I arrived, I had to change into Aerware—the company’s custom apparel built specially for the massage—to wear during the session. This helps the depth sensors overhead see your body and guarantees a level of friction when the touch sensors, called “Aerpoints,” come in contact with it. It felt like standard workout wear, so it was comfortable throughout the entirety of the massage.

Once I changed my clothes, I lay down on the massage table, rested my head on the face cradle, and was greeted by a touchscreen display that prompted me to pick a massage. At launch, Aescape will offer 20 massage programs with more to come later in the year. Some will focus on athletic recovery, while others will target general wellness. I was only able to try the Total Back and Glutes massage for my demo.

The next step is a body scan. Directly above the massage table are infrared sensors that capture a 3D computational model of the body. Aescape says this generates over 1.1 million 3D data points that accurately map your body’s position and identify key areas for the targeted massage. Basically, it’s what helps the Aerpoints know exactly where they are relative to your body.

A couple of years ago, Apple introduced the Voice Control feature without a lot of fanfare, but it was quickly considered a valuable feature that improved user accessibility.

Even if it doesn’t necessarily impact your accessibility, you can still try a different way of using your computer where you use your voice to control more, and your mouse or trackpad less.

We love a good hidden feature, that functionality on your device that may not necessarily be active at default but which elevates your experience (or even your life). This series explores our pick of them – and you can read them all here.

Previously, I pointed out a way that Windows users could more easily navigate their memory (both their own and digital) in Clipboard History. Here, I’m going to talk about a way macOS users can extend their reach when it comes to controlling their devices beyond their mice, trackpads, and keyboards.

This feature isn’t just impressive as a demonstration of technology or of Apple’s consideration for users (Voice Control is included for free on every suitable Mac, iPhone, and iPad), it’s also important for users who have little or limited mobility in their hands or arms. Many people can already experience the possible benefits, and I think it’s worth giving it a spin even just to familiarize yourself in case you ever need it.

In this article, I’ll tell you how you can get started with Voice Control, and there’s some decent customization options that you can use to tweak this feature to work best for you.

You can always revert to your previous settings, or you might just fall in love with your macOS device all over again.

Who is Voice Control for and what can you do with it?

Using your macOS device with your voice may feel unusual to many able-bodied users. Still, it’s a crucial feature for many who have different user needs. With Voice Control, you can do many things like navigate desktops and apps, interact with what’s onscreen, and edit and dictate text.

You can customize your Voice Control settings including the language, the microphone you want to use when you’re using Voice Control, the ability to use a numbered grid to navigate to different parts of the screen hands-free, and more.

You can also get more into the details of Voice Control to fine-tune it to your needs and preferences further by going beyond the standard commands that come built-in with the feature. You can craft your own commands, delete commands, and import and export custom commands. If this isn’t tuned to your liking enough, you can go further and add specific individual vocabulary terms, as long as custom vocabulary is supported in the language you’re using Voice Control in.

To be able to use Voice Control, you’ll have to make sure that your device is running macOS Catalina 10.15 or later. Apple recommends that you keep your laptop lid open if you’re using a laptop, use an external microphone if you can, or use a display that comes with a microphone built-in. It also reassures users that all the processing of any audio happens right on your device, so whatever you tell it stays private.

Also, in a somewhat cruel but necessary irony, you do have to set up Voice Control using traditional peripheral or built-in controls. If you have accessibility needs. this probably means you’ll need to ask for help in getting Voice Control set up.

How to turn on Voice Control in macOS

Again, make sure you’re running macOS Catalina 10.15 or later. Once you’ve made sure this is the case, follow the following steps:

1. Open your Apple menu which can be found by clicking the Apple icon. Click on System Settings (which might be System Preferences in some macOS versions).

2. Select Accessibility. In Accessibility settings, click on Voice Control.

3. Turn Voice Control on.

When you turn on Voice Control for the first time, your Mac device might be prompted to do a one-time download of the feature from Apple. Allow it to do this and then you’ll be able to use the feature after this is complete.

Once you have Voice Control turned on

If you’re using macOS Sonoma or a later version, a blue icon depicting a sound signature will appear in your menu bar. Clicking this icon will open the actions you can do with Voice Control like start or stop listening, change the microphone or language, and opening more Voice Control settings.
You can also stop and start Voice Control listening by using the commands “Go to sleep” and “Wake up.”
If you’re using macOS Ventura or an earlier version, a microphone icon will appear on your screen. Clicking this icon will open your Voice Control actions like ‘Wake up’ to start listening and ‘Sleep’ to stop listening.
You can also say “Wake up” or “Go to sleep” to start or stop Voice Control listening.

How to get started using Voice Control with a guide

You can familiarize yourself with the built-in voice commands of Voice Control or bring them up whenever you’d like to see a full list by telling it “Show commands.” This will show you the list of existing commands that you can use based on the context of what you have open at that moment.

Then you can say one of the commands from the list to carry out an action.

In macOS Sonoma or later, you can go for a practice run with Voice Control to get used to it with an interactive guide that Apple has included.

To access this interactive guide, follow the following path:

Go to the Apple menu by clicking the Apple icon > Click on System Settings > Select Accessibility in the sidebar of settings > Click on Voice Control in the Accessibility menu > Select Open Guide.

It’s in these same Voice Control settings where you can also turn the Play sound when command is recognised setting to make it easier to know if and when Voice Control has recognized a command (similar to Siri).

A widespread bacteria called Wolbachia and a virus that it carries can cause sterility in male insects by hijacking their sperm, preventing them from fertilizing eggs of females that do not have the same combination of bacteria and virus. A new study led by microbiome researchers at Penn State has uncovered how this microbial combination manipulates sperm, which could lead to refined techniques to control populations of agricultural pests and insects that carry diseases like Zika and dengue to humans.

The study is published in the March 8 issue of the journal Science.

“Wolbachia is the most widespread bacteria in animals and lives symbiotically within the reproductive tissues of about 50% of insect species, including some mosquitos and flies,” said Seth Bordenstein, professor of biology and entomology, director of the One Health Microbiome Center at Penn State, and one of the leaders of the research team. “Wolbachia has genes from a virus called prophage WO integrated into its genome. These genes — cifA and cifB — allow the bacteria to remarkably manipulate sperm and quickly spread through an insect population for their own good.”

When a male and female insect that both have Wolbachia mate, they successfully reproduce and pass on the bacteria. But when a male with Wolbachia mates with a female with no Wolbachia, the sperm are rendered lethal to the fertilized eggs, succumbing them to death. This system cunningly increases the proportion of offspring with Wolbachia and the virus in the next generation, because females with the bacteria successfully reproduce more frequently than females without.

This system is being used in several ongoing pilot studies across the world to control insect pests and the harmful viral diseases they carry. For example, to control a population of agricultural or human pests that do not have the bacteria, scientists release males with Wolbachia in order to crash the population.

“One of Wolbachia’s superpowers is that it blocks pathogenic RNA viruses such as Zika, dengue and chikungunya virus, so mosquitos with Wolbachia do not pass these viruses on to people when they bite,” Bordenstein said. “So, releases of both male and female mosquitos with Wolbachia in an area where it isn’t already present leads to replacement of the population with mosquitos that can no longer pass on a viral disease. The World Mosquito Program is now using Wolbachia to control viruses in 11 countries. With this study, we reveal the underlying mechanics of how this process works so we can fine-tune the technique to expand its scope in vector control measures.”

Wolbachia’s prophage WO genes code for proteins that interfere with normal development of sperm cells. These proteins impact a critical transformation during sperm development, when the sperm’s genome is repackaged and the sperm changes from a canoe-shape into a more refined needle-like shape.

“This shape change is incredibly important to the success of sperm, and any interference can impact the sperm’s ability to travel in the female reproductive tract and successfully fertilize the egg,” said Rupinder Kaur, assistant research professor of biology and entomology at Penn State and the other leader of the research team. “The transition is highly conserved in almost everything from insects to humans. Defects in this process can also cause male sterility in humans.”

According to the researchers, sperm is particularly prone to DNA damage and repair during this transition. In this study, they found that sperm exposed to Wolbachia, or the Cif proteins alone, had an elevated level of DNA damage at this stage. The DNA damage, if not repaired in a timely fashion, can result in abnormal sperm genome packaging, male infertility and embryonic inviability.

“These results confirmed the impact of Wolbachia and Cif proteins at this stage of sperm development, but we still wanted to know what was happening at earlier stages to trigger these changes,” Kaur said. “We conducted a series of tests to explore the structure and biochemical function of the Cif proteins and found that they can cleave messenger molecules called long non-coding RNA, which sets the stage to interfere with downstream development and function of the sperm.”

The researchers used fruit flies with Wolbachia to test the potential link between the bacteria and long non-coding RNA. They found that Wolbachia — or the Cif proteins alone — reduced the amount of these RNAs. Additionally, mutant flies with reduced expression of these RNAs in conjunction with Wolbachia had elevated levels of embryonic inviability because it augmented the defective transition process of sperm development. So, Kaur explained, the virus proteins control sperm by depleting the long non-coding RNAs required for a normal sperm function.

“Long non-coding RNAs do not make any proteins themselves, but they can have profound impacts on regulating the function of other genes required for sperm development,” Bordenstein said. “By altering this non-coding part of the genome, we found that Cif proteins start impacting sperm right from the earliest stages of development. Wolbachia’s prophage WO genes act like master puppeteers, manipulating sperm development in a way that allows their genes and the symbiotic bacteria to quickly spread through arthropod populations.”

Because the process of sperm development looks similar across the animal kingdom, the researchers said that knowledge of this process could lend insight into sterility challenges in humans as well as inform new control methods of harmful insect populations.

“Now that we have reverse engineered this process, we can fine tune methods of population control with Wolbachia that are already in use,” Kaur said. “We plan to take advantage of this knowledge to augment currently existing disease vector and pest control methods, and perhaps emulate the technique without Wolbachia or virus proteins in the long-term.”

In addition to Bordenstein and Kaur, the research team includes Angelina McGarry, research technologist II at Penn State; J. Dylan Shropshire, assistant professor at Lehigh University; and Brittany Leigh, a postdoctoral researcher at Vanderbilt University at the time of the research.
