Gazelle Eclipse Review: A Luxury Dutch Electric Bike

[ad_1]

If you’re looking at bikes online—or anything, really, whether it’s headphones or monitors—you have to consider price versus payoff. Gazelle has billed its newest ebike, the Eclipse, as a long-range comfort cruiser. It is basically the expensive Dutch version of the direct-to-consumer (DTC) Rad Power Bikes’ Radster Road (8/10, WIRED Recommends).

I brooded over that price difference while I was riding, until I realized that I really was much more comfortable, and for a really dumb reason. The handlebars on the Eclipse are much narrower than the Radster’s, as well as the other DTC bikes that I have tested. Most bikes have smaller parts for smaller frames, but if you’re a smaller or newer bike company, you might standardize your handlebar sizes due to restricted supply or economies of scale. That’s just not something you would do if you’re Royal Dutch Gazelle, which has existed for more than 130 years and holds the royal warrant in the Netherlands as a distinction of high quality.

You can swap out handlebars pretty easily on acoustic bikes, but doing so on an electric bike is a more complicated matter. Finding a narrower handlebar was such an unexpected comfort. It’s just … a really nice bike. Even the paint job is nicer than other bikes I have, with four hand-applied coats and dimensional shading to make it look slimmer. If you’re not trying to pinch pennies, there are a lot of really nice things about the Eclipse.

So Much Information

There are two different models of the Eclipse. Both have an aluminum frame, but the T11+ HMB has a Shimano Deore XT derailleur gear, while the version I tested is the C380+ version, which has the Enviolo CVT gear hub and a low-maintenance Gates belt drive. May I never have a chain drop out while crossing a busy street again!

Both come in a step-over and step-through version with three different frame sizes, with the smallest being a 46 centimeters. I’m 5’2″ and was positively thrilled to find a Dutch bike that comes in a size this small as the Dutch are tall people and this is unusual. Of course, the bikes all have UL certification, which means that the bike has been certified to comply with Underwriters Laboratories safety standards and won’t inadvertently set your garage on fire.

Probably the first thing you’ll notice is the new Bosch system. It has a Bosch Performance Line motor with 85 nm of torque and a 750-Wh ginormous battery integrated into the downtube. After about 45 miles of biking up hills and hauling gear, I only got the battery down to 45 percent. It’s a class 3 ebike with a maximum speed of 28 miles per hour.

AirTag bike mount hides in reflector

[ad_1]

The Device Therapy Bike Mount & Reflector gives you a place to hide an Apple AirTag tracker. With this combination, you can (hopefully) track the location of your bike if it gets stolen because millions of iPhones around the world can report the location of your lost item.

This post contains affiliate links. Cult of Mac may earn a commission when you use our links to buy items.

Device Therapy Bike Mount & Reflector review

Conceal an AirTag on your bike and you might have a better shot at getting it back if its stolen.  Apple’s item tracker hasn’t been around long, but there’s already at least one report of it being used to return a stolen bicycle to its owner. A bike taken July 4 in Boston was allegedly recovered by police.

In that case, the AirTag had been removed and thrown away. Fortunately, the bike was found nearby. With the Device Therapy Bike Mount & Reflector, the AirTag is actually attached to the bike.

Hardware and design

Device Therapy Bike Mount & Reflector review
The Device Therapy Bike Mount & Reflector is available with red or white reflective material.
Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac

This accessory is primarily a cylindrical holder for the AirTag made of plant-sourced bioplastic. It opens with a screw cap, and the tracker fits snugly inside. The case seals tightly to keep out the weather, but this doesn’t much matter because the AirTag itself is splash, water and dust resistant (IP67).

Device Therapy puts 3M Diamond-Grade reflective material — the same stuff used for road signs — on one side. It doesn’t just look like a reflector. It is a reflector.

You have your choice of red or white reflective material on a black or white case to match your bike.

The Device Therapy Bike Mount & Reflector attaches with a standard zip tie that can’t be easily removed once it’s closed. In my testing, I found it a strong connection. The only way to remove the item is to cut the zip tie. But the idea here is that a thief isn’t going to do that because they’ll think it’s a simple reflector. It sure looks like a reflector.

Just so there’s no confusion, this accessory doesn’t come with an AirTag. That’s sold separately ($29).

Put an AirTag in the Device Therapy Bike Mount & Reflector

Device Therapy Bike Mount & Reflector performance

The reason you would use an AirTag bike mount is to conceal a tracker on your two-wheeler so it can be found by almost any iPhone via a Bluetooth connection. And that iPhone will then automatically (and anonymously) notify you where your lost/stolen item is. So if your bike gets boosted, you can find it later.

But there are a couple of caveats here. Apple’s tracking system depends on iPhones getting fairly close to the AirTag. And the Bike Mount & Reflector itself slightly reduces the distance because the wireless connection has to go through the bioplastic casing. In my testing, I could make contact between AirTag and iPhone at about 75 feet in Device Therapy’s bike reflector. That’s down from the usual 100 feet or more. Walls reduce the connection distance even more.

Also, if the thief has an iPhone themself, they’ll eventually be notified that there’s an AirTag following them. Apple created the system to find lost items, not stolen ones.

Most importantly, if you get notified of the location of your stolen bike, don’t go try to collect it yourself. Talk to the police. Take the experience of the guy in Boston mentioned earlier as a guide.

Device Therapy Bike Mount & Reflector final thoughts

This is a simple product, but it does exactly what it’s intended to do. You can easily attach an AirTag to your bicycle and have a firm hope that a thief won‘t notice the tracker is there.

Pricing

The price of this AirTag bike mount is about as low as one could hope. You can order a Device Therapy Bike Mount & Reflector from the Cult of Mac Store for just $15.99.

Trek’s FX+ 2 Electric Bike Is $500 off Right Now

[ad_1]

Here in the Pacific Northwest, spring has sprung. Yes, it is but a false spring, and by the end of the week, we will again be moping through chilly gloom and rain. But for the time being, the sun is shining on our gleaming white vampire limbs and we are frantically preparing ourselves for summer picnics, lakeside hangs, and, naturally, plenty of biking.

That makes this year’s TrekFest spectacularly well-timed. Trek holds its largest sale of the year from March 15 through April 30, and we noticed that our top electric bike recommendation for most people, the Trek FX+ 2, is $500 off. One of our favorite electric mountain bikes, the Trek Fuel EXe, is also $1,000 off. You can also shop the rest of the sale here—there are discounts on helmets and lights too.

As always, if you don’t see anything you like or need here, don’t forget to check out our Best Electric Bikes, Best Bike Accessories, and Best Bike Locks guides.

Best Electric Bike Deals

Trek FX 2 electric bicycle

If you came to me and said, “I want an electric bike and I’ve never ridden one before,” I would consider a few items. You probably don’t want a 65-pound direct-to-consumer behemoth that will crush you at a standstill or require you to learn how to tune hydraulic brakes yourself. At a mere 40 pounds, the Trek FX+ 2 (8/10, WIRED Recommends) is a relatively lightweight, aluminum city commuter made by a company with a wide network of retailers who can help you if things go awry. I’ve been testing electric bikes for years, and this is the first and only bike my dad, who is in his 60s, grabs to chase after my kids.

Before you murder me, I have to say that if you like mountain biking, $5,500 is not an insane price to pay for a super light bike with full suspension—even without an electric motor. Trek is offering a few different models for sale. This is the most affordable version; the quality of the components increases as you go higher on the price scale. However, this one still has a carbon frame with a quiet motor and the same specs as the model I tested. The modest 250-watt motor is just enough to keep up with your friends on the uphills so you can all enjoy the downhills together.

If you’ve dug your helmet out of the garage and discovered that the foam has all quietly rotted away during the winter, you need a new one. This is a modestly-priced helmet by Bontrager, which Trek owns. It features MIPS, or the Multidirectional Impact Protection System, which allows the helmet to slide relative to the brain and deflect impact.

Santa Cruz Skitch Review: A Light, Versatile, and Expensive Electric Bike

[ad_1]

I stopped monitoring the range after about 30 miles, but the battery indicator on the top tube said that I still had about 30 percent of the battery left. (I weigh 115 pounds, so your mileage may vary.) You can also select drop handlebars if you plan on doing more bike commuting, or add suspension to a setup with flat bars if you want to ride more rocks and bumps. My tester also had a dropper seat post, which lets me raise or drop the seat as I come to stoplights or go up hills. I am pretty sure every bike (commuter, mountain, everything) should have one.

Too Hot to Handle

Photograph: Will Matsuda

There is one major drawback to having a gorgeous, expensive bike that can go anywhere and do anything. When your bike is your primary mode of transportation, you do things like leaving it locked up in front of the Grocery Outlet (known locally as “the Gross Out”) to run errands. Even with all the best security measures, I really cannot make myself do that with a $7,000 bike. If you’re going to use it as a bike commuter, you are probably biking 12 miles to an office with a locked, indoor bike garage, then straight home to your own garage. You are not taking it as a car substitute to karaoke night at the dive bar.

I have also read on Reddit that people have concerns about the Fazua system, as it’s much less common here in the United States and harder to fix. You could go with a Bosch or a Shimano, but it won’t be as light. I have decided not to care about this. In general, you’re probably going to have to go directly to the manufacturer or dealer to get an electric bike fixed, anyway.

The app is just meh. It’s not pleasant to look at or navigate, and it’s always telling me to update, urgently, in a process that’s much less intuitive than Specialized’s Mission Control. Mission Control is also a little more useful, as it will automatically adjust the power output to help you make it home. However, the Skitch is light enough that it doesn’t really matter if you run out of battery. The app may also improve dramatically in the upcoming years, as Santa Cruz has direct and continuing input on the app’s development.

More Charges Against 2 Juveniles in Las Vegas Tragic Bike Hit-and-Run Video Case.

On Monday, further charges were added to the slaying of a former Southern California police chief as he rode his bicycle on a roadway in Las Vegas. The slaying was caught on tape, and the prosecutors decided to add the new counts.

At least three hit-and-run accidents took place on the morning of August 14, according to the police, including the collision that the police believe was intentionally caused to take the life of Andreas “Andy” Probst, who was 64 years old. Tuesday is the day when the two young people, who are now 18 and 16, are expected to show up in court. The identities of the adolescents will not be disclosed by the Associated Press due to the fact that they are still minors. In 2009, Probst resigned from his position as police chief of Bell, California, which is a suburb of Los Angeles.

According to Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson, the young man, who is just 18 years old, has been charged with attempted murder, battery with a dangerous weapon, fleeing the scene of an accident, and possession of a stolen vehicle. All of these charges stem from an incident in which the victim was attacked with a firearm.

When the accusation of assault with a weapon was added, the suspect, who was just 16 years old at the time, was already charged with murder and attempted murder.

David Westbrook, the public defender representing the senior defendant, chose not to comment on the latest charges. According to what Westbrook has indicated, his client was just 17 years old when he was taken into custody a month ago.

On Friday, the younger adolescent made their initial appearance in court without the representation of an attorney. When he appears in court on Tuesday, he will most likely have an attorney appointed to defend him.

“The behavior that was exhibited by (the) defendants… is outrageous and cannot be tolerated in this community,” Wolfson said in a statement. “The defendants”

These young offenders are not eligible for the death sentence under any circumstances. According to the laws of Nevada, the maximum sentence for a person who is found guilty of murdering someone before they reached 18 is anything from 20 years to life in state prison.

According to the police, the juveniles were operating a stolen Hyundai sedan that had earlier hit and left the scene after hitting with a biker who was 72 years old, a Toyota Corolla, and then Probst.

The video was shot from the perspective of the front passenger seat, and it shows the young people laughing and chatting just before to the moment when the automobile started moving toward Probst and collided with the bike. After having his body crushed into the car’s hood and windshield, Probst can be seen laying on the ground near to the curb as the camera pans out to see this.

On the same day, the 18-year-old was brought into custody by law enforcement. The police stated that they were able to discover about the video’s dissemination at a high school the previous week, and they issued an announcement looking for the video’s producer, who is 16 years old.
