Amazon’s Echo Dot drops to just $28

[ad_1]

Not all connected speakers have a voice assistant built in. The , for instance, doesn’t have a microphone. So, if you want to use your voice to control such devices, you may need to pick up a secondary smart speaker, such as . As luck would have it, that little Alexa-enabled device is . That’s 44 percent off and just $5 more than the record-low price.

Amazon

The Echo Dot is a solid smart speaker, especially at this price.

$28 at Amazon

That’s not to say the Echo Dot isn’t a decent speaker in its own right. In fact, we think it’s the under $50.

Amazon has been steadily improving the Dot’s audio quality over the years and the most recent version from 2022 pumps out far louder and clearer audio than could be reasonably expected from a sub-$50 speaker. The globe-shaped speaker has some physical buttons, including ones for volume control and another that mutes/unmutes the microphone if you don’t want Alexa to remain alert for voice commands at all times.

If you’d prefer to save a few extra bucks, you could instead opt for the . That Alexa-enabled speaker is currently . The colorful speaker also has a mic mute switch. It could prove to be a handy bedside speaker for listening to podcasts or a sleep story when it’s time to nod off.

The Echo Pop is Amazon’s entry-level smart speaker.

Amazon’s standard Kindle is on sale for $80

[ad_1]

Amazon’s entry-level 16GB Kindle , which is a discount of 20 percent. This is the latest iteration of the standard ereader, dating back to 2022. Amazon doesn’t do too many Kindle hardware updates, so we don’t know if this sale precludes a forthcoming refresh. The sale covers both the black and blue denim versions.

Amazon

The Kindle is one of the most iconic brands in the ereader space, and for good reason. Amazon has been . This model actually made , and we recommend it for anyone shopping for a budget-friendly reading tablet. We loved the price, which is made even more alluring by today’s sale, and the huge ebook selection via Amazon.

We also liked how easy it is to use. Even if you’ve never held an ereader in your life, you’ll be quickly turning pages in no time. There are a bunch of customization options, allowing you to fiddle with font type, font size, margins and more. You can even save a bunch of settings together as a “theme”, which is handy in households with more than one reader. The integration with audio books is also nice, as it ensures you’ll be on the same page no matter how you absorb the content.

This ereader isn’t waterproof and it lacks many of the add-ons common with more expensive models. The standard Kindle is about as basic as this tech gets, but as a one-purpose device, are extra bells and whistles really necessary? I splurged for the , which comes with a stylus, but I kind of wish I didn’t. Since buying it, I’ve read like 150 books and written approximately zero notes. Simple is better, and cheaper.

As with most Kindles, there are ads on the lock-screen, which may be a dealbreaker for some. I fully understand aversion to advertisements, they generally suck, but I’ve never found them to be a problem on Kindles. I barely notice them.

Amazon’s My Lady Jane is Prime Video’s royally fun twist on Netflix’s Bridgerton – and it’s coming in June

[ad_1]

If you’re a fan of historical dramas featuring quick wits and absolute… bad people, Prime Video‘s My Lady Jane looks like it should be at the top of your watch list. Inspired by the best-selling book of the same name, the new series is set in an alternative version of the Tudor world where Lady Jane Grey didn’t lose her head after just nine days on the throne.

It turns out that not being beheaded is a pretty good career move, but after Lady Jane finds herself crowned Queen of England, a move that is not universally popular, it doesn’t take long before ne’er-do-wells, ruffians and other scoundrels come for her crown and her head.

Samsung outfits Amazon’s latest film studio with cutting-edge LEDs

[ad_1]

Last updated: April 24th, 2024 at 16:07 UTC+02:00

Samsung is showcasing its display technology prowess through a new collaboration with Amazon that revolves around its latest addition to its entertainment business portfolio: Culver Post. The latter is a state-of-the-art theatrical post-production studio located in Los Angeles.

Samsung says it has partnered with 424 Post and Harbor to provide advanced display technologies for Amazon’s post-production studio. As a result, Culver Post takes advantage of a 34-foot 8K Samsung The Wall LED (IWA-series) display and DCI-certified 4K Samsung Onyx LED displays.

The right equipment for the job

Culver Post is a full-service post-production studio that should bring unparalleled HDR and SDR mastering capabilities. It offers five stages of theatrical color grading and sound mixing. The first and second stages are outfitted with the Samsung 8K IWA-series The Wall and Onyx LEDs, respectively.

Although both solutions are based on LED technology, The Wall (IWA series) is ideal for both HDR and SDR color grading, whereas Onyx is a cinema LED display ideal for HDR color grading and mastering.

Onyx is the world’s first DCI-certified cinema LED display, and over the past few years, it was adopted by dozens of theaters in more than 120 countries. In January, it finally arrived in Germany for the first time and debuted at the Lamm-Lichtspiele cinema arthouse cinema in Erlangen.

As for Amazon’s Culver Post in Los Angeles, Samsung’s LED solutions ensure that filmmakers and creators can have the best editing and viewing experience. Each Culver Post stage also features Meyer Sound Ultra Reflex sound systems with Dolby Atmos. In addition, each stage has enough room for roughly 50 guests, including cinematographers, colorists, and editors.

These technologies combined allow entire production teams to experience a cinematic working environment and bring the spirit of collaboration to mastering and post-production.

Amazon’s updated grocery delivery program has some strings attached

[ad_1]

After asserting itself as an overshadowing presence in retail, Amazon is still experimenting with ways to leave a similar mark in groceries. The company’s latest tweak to its service lowers the minimum price for free grocery deliveries to $35. However, most customers using the service will also need to pay a $10 monthly subscription in addition to having a Prime membership ($15 monthly or $139 annually).

To participate, you must live in one of the 3,500 supported cities and towns in the US. (When signing up, it will let you know if your primary shipping address isn’t supported.) The service offers unlimited grocery deliveries from Amazon Fresh, the Amazon-owned Whole Foods and various local and specialty partners. Those include Cardenas Markets, Save Mart, Bartell Drugs, Rite Aid, Pet Food Express, Mission Wine & Spirits and more.

The subscription includes one-hour delivery windows where available, unlimited 30-minute pickup orders and priority access to the company’s Recurring Reservations. This feature lets you pick a guaranteed weekly grocery delivery window. To use it, you’ll need to pick your weekly two-hour slot at least 24 hours in advance.

Amazon

People using the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other government assistance programs can get the same grocery delivery benefits for half the price ($5 monthly). If you fall in that camp, you can get those perks without needing a Prime subscription on top of the subscription fee.

It remains to be seen if this latest iteration of the program will stick since Amazon’s strategy has been all over the place. Early last year, the company increased the minimum checkout price for free grocery deliveries from $35 to $150, then dropped it to $100 (while voiding the Prime requirement) about 10 months later. If you like this version of the program, cross your fingers that Amazon doesn’t change it again in a few months.

Before rolling out the program’s latest version on Tuesday, Amazon tested it in Columbus, OH, Denver, CO, and Sacramento, CA, in late 2023. The company says over 85 percent of survey respondents who used the service were “extremely” or “very” satisfied, leaving high marks for its convenience and savings on delivery fees.

You can see if the program is available in your area on Amazon’s groceries sign-up page. If it is, you can try it free for 30 days before paying.
