2020 MacBook Air’s performance and battery life will impress you
Apple announced the MacBook Air with M1 chip alongside the 13-inch MacBook Pro in late 2020. It was the company’s first Apple silicon laptop, and it blew the competition away with its performance, efficiency, and battery life.
Following the launch of the M2 MacBook Air in 2022, Apple cut the price of the M1 model to $999. Despite its dated design, this made the M1 Air a great entry-level machine for college students and light use. The all-day battery life is a cherry on top. It ensures the laptop lasts through a day of heavy use with ease without overheating despite its fanless design.
While reviewing the M1 MacBook Air for Cult of Mac, our editor, Leander Kahney, opened 650 Safari tabs. This was with several tasks running in the background, including downloading Photos and Office 365. If anything, this should give you an idea of the M1 MacBook Air’s incredible performance.
The same pros and cons still apply in 2024. If you can live with the M1 MacBook Air’s chunky bezels and dated design, its performance and battery life will impress you. Unlike the M3 MacBook Air, the 2020 model can only power one external display.
M1 MacBook Air for $649 is a steal deal
While Apple has officially discontinued the M1 MacBook Air, there’s no reason not to buy it. At $649, it is also the cheapest way to get a powerful MacBook for daily use. You will still get a standard one-year warranty, which you can extend further with AppleCare+.
In the computer setup arms race over bigger and better external displays, one monitor reigns supreme (with a price tag to match) — Apple’s phenomenal Pro Display XDR. Today’s M3 Max MacBook Pro rig just added one to its two other displays, including the oddly square LG DualUp.

Pro Display XDR setup includes loaded M3 MacBook Pro and LG DualUp monitor
“Just got the Pro Display XDR, now I can finally code, watch YouTube and check my logs at the same time,” they said. They run a loaded 16-inch M3 MacBook Pro in space black with “max specs,” which probably means the M3 Max chip plus 48GB unified memory and at least 1TB of SSD storage, at around $4,000.
Two displays sat in the mix already — 28-inch LG DualUP display, nearly square, and a 34-inch Acer curved ultra-wide display (“gives me 100mhz but has a lot of weird bugs with older Mac models,” Nacho said). To those Nacho added one of the world’s best displays, Apple’s remarkable 32-inch 6K Pro Display XDR, which costs $5,000 and up.
Pro Display XDR setup: But what if an upgrade comes out?
Nacho’s one hesitation on buying Apple’s amazing display? The possibility that Cupertino might update it soon, and then they’d want the newer, better one. We’ve all been there, right (with less expensive gear, anyway).
“I couldn’t wait for the rumored upgrade, I really hope they still take their time otherwise i’ll be forced to sell this one and get the upgraded new one,” they said.
Post commenters bashed Apple a bit for sticking to 60Hz refresh rates on its external displays.
“60hz screens makes me feel everything [is] slow,” one person said.
“Agree for really interactive stuff, the other 2 screens have 120hz, but for coding which by its nature is really slow I really don’t mind the compromise,” Nacho replied.
Interesting split keyboard
And for another interesting find in Nacho’s Pro Display XDR setup, check out the split keyboard. It’s a rarely seen ZSA Voyager.
“What do you think about the split keyboard versus the magic keyboard?” asked a commenter.
“It’s great for my wrists because of the time I spend coding and working with it,” Nacho replied. “But it definitely has a steep learning curve so you need to be patient and this model requires a lot of new stuff and small customizations to make it work like you want so I recommend you start with a bigger one like the ZSA Moon Lander.”

March 17, 1988: Apple sues Microsoft for allegedly stealing 189 different elements of its Macintosh operating system to create Windows 2.0.
The incident, which causes a deep rift between Apple and one of its top developers, paves the way for an epic battle between the two companies that will rage for years.
Apple sues Microsoft after developer goes from friend to foe
As a valued developer, Microsoft got a behind-the-scenes look at the development of the Macintosh project prior to its 1984 release. Shortly after the very first Mac 128K went on sale, Microsoft founder Bill Gates wrote then-Apple CEO John Sculley. Gates suggested Apple should license the Macintosh operating system to outside manufacturers to help establish it as the standard interface for personal computing.
Sculley was tentatively open to the idea. But on June 25, 1985, Apple exec Jean-Louis Gassée shot down the proposal. (Gassée took over running the Mac division from Steve Jobs.)
Gates decided to capitalize on what he saw as a great business opportunity to create a mass-market operating system. He debuted Windows on November 15, 1985.
Windows debut stirs anger at Apple
Sculley reacted furiously when he saw Windows, although version 1.0 did not compare well to Mac OS. For example, although the new Microsoft OS featured onscreen windows, they could not overlap one another.
However, in some ways, Windows seemed eerily close to Mac. For one thing, Microsoft packaged it with built-in apps Write and Paint, which were reminiscent of MacWrite and MacPaint.
Since Microsoft made up two-thirds of software sales for Mac at the time, it was in nobody’s interest to break up the partnership. Mac sales were underperforming as it was, and Microsoft’s first version of Windows was no more threatening than any of the other Apple knockoffs floating around.
A disastrous agreement between Microsoft and Apple
Windows wasn’t a straight-up Mac OS ripoff. In fact, Microsoft began developing Windows before Gates ever saw the Macintosh. Plus, both operating systems licensed technology from Xerox PARC, which did a lot of the creative legwork on inventing the graphical user interface.
As a result, Microsoft and Apple came to an agreement. Sculley and Gates signed a deal on Nov. 21, 1985, that licensed the Mac’s “visual displays” to Microsoft. Gates agreed that Microsoft would continue writing software for Mac. Microsoft also gave Apple a two-year exclusivity window on its popular spreadsheet program Excel.
Controversially, this deal gave Microsoft a “non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, nontransferable license to use [parts of the Mac technology] in present and future software programs, and to license them to and through third parties for use in their software programs.”
Windows 2.0: Apple sues Microsoft
A couple of years later, Windows 2.0 arrived. It resembled the Macintosh interface much more closely than the first version of Microsoft’s operating system. As a result, on March 17, 1988 — the date we’re commemorating today — Apple sued Microsoft for stealing its work.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go well for Apple. Judge William Schwarzer ruled that the existing license between Apple and Microsoft covered certain interface elements for the new Windows. Those that weren’t covered were not copyrightable.
It was the start of a decade of dominance for Microsoft, and a decade of disaster and near-ruin for Apple.
Out of the many dozens of options, which is the coolest Apple Watch face? Every time I see someone wearing an Apple Watch, I try to scope out which watch face they use. Nine times out of 10, they use either the Modular face or the Photo face (with a Sport band).
This is despite the Apple Watch offering dozens of watch faces, allowing for all kinds of customizability.
First, let’s go over how to add a new Apple Watch face. If you’ve never done it before, it’s easy. Just tap and hold on your Apple Watch screen. Scroll all the way to the end of your list of currently installed watch faces, then tap the big + icon on the New screen. Scroll through the gallery and tap Add when you find a new Apple Watch face you want to add.
To customize the watch face, tap and hold on it, then tap Edit. On most watch faces, you can scroll with the watch’s Digital Crown to change styles or colors. Swipe left to edit the complications; tap on a complication to replace it with something else.
Best Apple Watch face for fitness: Activity

The best Apple Watch face for fitness is the Activity watch face. It comes in three versions — two analog and one digital — all of which put your Move, Exercise and Stand rings front and center, with room for three complications. By default, they complications come set to Weather Conditions, Workout and Heart Rate. You also can customize the color of the clock.

The best Apple Watch face for two time zones if the GMT watch face. It shows one time zone with the watch hands and a different time zone of your choosing in 24-hour time around the edge. Tap the screen to pick a time zone from one from the preset list or from a city you have set in the Clock app.
You will find four complications around the edge. Personally, I would swap out UV Index for Messages or Weather Conditions.
Best Apple Watch face for sleeping: Numerals Duo

The best Apple Watch face for sleeping is Numerals Duo. The Apple Watch has a built-in sleep feature, but some people find it annoying in use. The Apple Watch locks down, so if you want to check notifications or turn on its flashlight, you first have to hold the Digital Crown in.
If you want to wear your Apple Watch to bed without the sleep feature, you can still prepare yourself a nighttime watch face. Numerals Duo is a good choice for that — the big obvious numbers make it easy to read if you’re up in the middle of the night and bleary-eyed.
I recommend setting the color to red, which is easiest on the eyes in a dark room.
Apple Watch face with most complications: Infograph

The Apple Watch face with the most complications is Infograph. This watch face packs in an incredible eight complications. It’s no wonder Infograph is the watch face of choice for Apple CEO Tim Cook himself. Infograph gives you four corner complications and four more in the center, all cleverly arranged to still be legible.
I recommend the Your Schedule complication in the sub-dial top position, as it puts both the current date and your upcoming calendar appointment on the edge of the clock. Most of the preset complications are pretty good as is, but I would swap a few of them out for Messages, Now Playing and Maps.
Best minimal Apple Watch face: Nike Digital

The best minimal Apple Watch face is Nike Digital. The time is giant and easy to read from a distance. It gives you room for three small complications — two icons and a line of text on the bottom, useful for Calendar or Now Playing.
Unfortunately, you can’t replace the Nike logo with a fourth complication, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one.
Cool Apple Watch face: Numerals

A cool Apple Watch face prefect for the weekend is Numerals. The giant digital number makes it easy to read the hour, and the minute hand gives you a vague idea of the time. That’s all you really need on a lazy Saturday. There’s room for one complication, but I always use it without.
Best Apple Watch face for pilots: World Time

The World Time watch face puts the biggest city from every time zone onto one watch face. In addition to your local time, you can see the time around the entire globe in a 24-hour clock around the edge.
And there’s still plenty of room for complications — for a pilot or flight attendant, I would recommend Calendar, Weather, Messages and Flighty.

Blofeld, the criminal mastermind and head of Spectre, is once again scheming to defeat James Bond in Cypher 007 from Tilting Point LLC.
I’m a fan of RPGs so I loaded the action game on my iPhone. It’s also playable on a range of other Apple devices.
1. Cypher 007 fills the need for a new James Bond movie
After over 60 years of books and films, James Bond is the world’s most famous secret agent. But the last movie in the franchise was 2021. Cypher 007 is a fun alternative for anyone getting impatient.
In the game, Blofeld has utilized a brainwashing technique known as Cypher on Bond and is holding him captive in a mental prison in an attempt to turn him into the ultimate double agent. It’s up to players to foil this plot.
Fortunately, 007 has help. Q, M and Moneypenny all put in an appearance.
2. It’s about stealth, not hack and slash
As I said, I’m a fan of role playing games. In these, the objective is typically to quickly stab or shoot almost anything that moves. Cypher 007 takes a completely different approach.
You play as James Bond, who isn’t enormously stronger or faster than his digital opponents. His advantage is stealth. If Bond gets into a stand-up fistfight, he’ll win but nearby guards will notice and run over to shoot him. If Bond shoots someone, all nearby guards hear and come running, guns blazing.
So players guide 007 as he creeps up behind people and quietly knocks them out. All the while being careful to not be seen by enemy agents and the many security cameras.
The stealth requirement makes Cypher 007 different enough from my usual games that I enjoy the change of pace.
3. Requires strategy and planning
As much as a love the hack-and-slash RPGs I play with my friends, they don’t require a lot of thought. Run at any enemies, kill them as quickly as possible, and retreat only if necessary — that’s about as much strategy as is required.
Following that same strategy in Cypher 007 won’t get you past the first level. Each room requires puzzling out how to maneuver around swiveling cameras and moving guards to get to where you need to be to stealthily knock someone out. So it’s a bit of an action puzzler.
But one type of strategy is missing. This isn’t a traditional RPG because the character doesn’t level up. He’s James Freakin’ Bond — he’s already the best secret agent in the world.
But he starts out with no equipment and must acquire some as the game progresses. Weapons and other gear get gradually better, which is a bit like leveling up.
4. Cypher 007 is challenging but not frustrating
You must think your way through the game and, of course, difficulty increases as the game progresses. But don’t be concerned that it’ll become too challenging. I never found a level I couldn’t get through.
Players are given unlimited respawns of their character, and you reach frequent save points. So when James Bond gets killed, you get another chance without needing to repay large sections of the current level.
Here’s a game tip if you feel like you’re stuck: any guard you take out stays out when your character respawns. So if there are simply too many guards, start by taking one down even if you know it’ll get your character killed. You can whittle them down that way.
5. Good graphics and mechanics
The graphics Tilting Point LLC built into Cypher 007 are more than up to the task of depicting a man sneaking through dimly lit buildings. You can easily see the map and always tell what’s going on, but at no point will you go “Hey, that looks amazing.” It’s not that sort of game.
And don’t get your hopes up for an easily seducible Bond girl — it’s not that sort of game either.
Cypher 007 isn’t an elaborate open world. You’re assigned specific missions to carry out in designated areas. The places keep changing — Swiss chalets, underground bunkers, that sort of thing — so the geography isn’t repetitive. Just don’t expect to wander around looking to see what you could find.
I prefer that. I’ve dropped out of open world RPGs because I spent too much time getting lost in the wrong places looking for things that weren’t there.
6. No irritating in-app purchases
Cypher 007 is part of Apple Arcade. That means there are no in-app purchases, and other hidden costs are forbidden.
Too many other games require players to buy gems or gear to keep going. Sometimes you absolutely need a weapon to defeat a boss that’s, realistically, only available for real-world money. That won’t happen with any title in Apple Arcade.
Speaking of which, you aren’t getting only this one game. Over 200 more are included with a $4.99-per-month subscription to Apple’s gaming service. And one subscription works for up to six family members.
7. Play it today on all your Apple computers
I played Cypher 007 from Tilting Point LLC on an iPhone, but that’s not the only option. It’s also playable on Mac, iPad and Apple TV.
External controllers are an option for any of the supported platforms. I used the game to test out a new iPhone controller from GameSir, or you can use a wireless Xbox or Playstation controller with your notebook or TV.
March 16, 2012: Apple introduces the third-generation iPad, its first tablet to come with a Retina display. Marketed as simply “the new iPad,” it’s widely known as the “iPad 3.”
Boasting that beautiful screen and Apple’s then-swanky A5X chip with a quad-core graphics processor, the third-gen iPad quickly becomes a big success. Disappointingly for customers, it will only hang around until October 2012. That’s the shortest lifespan of any iOS product in history, at just seven months.
iPad 3 brings a Retina display to remember
The arrival of the Retina display proved great for iPad buyers. Now they could enjoy astonishingly crisp visuals on the new tablet’s 9.7-inch screen. Apple introduced the Retina display with the iPhone 4 in mid-2010, making its arrival on the iPad both inevitable and highly anticipated.
In fact, the 264 pixels per inch was a lower density than on the iPhone. However, users typically hold iPads further away from their eyes than iPhones. That meant Apple could stick with its “Retina” marketing term.
The iPad 3 also supported some pretty great features. Hardware improvements included a 5-megapixel camera, HD 1080p video recording (with software-based image stabilization), dictation and support for LTE networks in North America.
In the marketplace, the device did very well, selling 3 million units in its first three days. This represented the pinnacle of Apple’s dominance of the tablet market. Apple manufactured more than 60% of all tablets bought during Q2 2012 worldwide. By contrast, today Apple captures around 38% of the market.
iPad 3 disappointments
Not everything about the iPad 3 met with universal acclaim, however. The first iPad became the fastest-selling new product in Apple history, and the second one improved on that.
The iPad 3 marked the first time Apple faced an issue it continues to grapple with: How do you make a new iPad compelling each and every year?
Some reviews took on the almost begrudging tone you see with modern iPhone reviews. The reviewer knows the new device is better than its direct predecessor, and can’t therefore award it a lower mark, but struggles to get too excited about it. The iPad 3 was evolutionary, not revolutionary.
At the time of its launch, some customers expressed disappointment that the iPad 3 measured thicker than its predecessor, while otherwise sticking almost exactly to the design of the second-gen iPad. The fact that it didn’t come with an A6 chip, as had been heavily rumored, was also a bit of a letdown.
No Siri for you, iPad 3
The biggest criticism of all? Siri didn’t make it onto the device, despite having been marketed as a big selling point of 2011’s iPhone 4s. The third-gen iPad arrived just a handful of months after Steve Jobs’ death, so every Apple product was being scrutinized to draw out larger points about new CEO Tim Cook’s approach to fresh products.
Ultimately, the greatest disappointment with the iPad 3 was just how short a lifespan it had. Apple debuted the fourth-gen iPad just 221 days after the iPad 3 went on sale. The iPad 4 added the Lightning connector (making the iPad 3 the last iPad to support the old 30-pin dock connector), and featured Apple’s new A6X chip.
