You can soon pin more chats in WhatsApp

[ad_1]

Last updated: March 14th, 2024 at 08:26 UTC+01:00

WhatsApp allows you to pin a chat, which fixes the conversation to the top of the list even if there are no new messages in it and even if there are new messages in other, non-pinned chats. Currently, the platform allows you to pin up to three chats. While that number should be enough for most people, it might not be sufficient for the remaining. To address the issue, WhatsApp is now increasing the number of chats that you can pin.

According to a new report from WABetaInfo, the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android (version 2.24.6.13) allows you to pin up to five chats. According to the publication, the additional limit is not available by default, and it had to be activated manually. However, that’s only because the new limit is in the beta stage. When WhatsApp makes the new limit available in the stable version of the app, it should be active by default.

The ability to pin up to five chats could be very useful for people who use WhatsApp heavily, converse with many people, and want to pin more chats. At the moment, there’s no information about when WhatsApp will bring the new limit to the stable version of the app. However, considering WhatsApp’s feature rollout history, the company should make the ability to pin up to five chats available more widely in the next few months.

YouTube gets more interactive on TVs with new update

[ad_1]

Last updated: March 14th, 2024 at 07:32 UTC+01:00

Google has announced that it is updating the YouTube app for TV platforms with a redesigned layout for accessing interactive content and information related to a video for offering a better user experience.

Currently, when you click on the title of a video, YouTube brings up a card showing the likes and views counts, upload date, channel information, description, and the comments section. The app lays the card over the video, which obstructs the viewing experience. That’s one of the reasons why people don’t access the card frequently or interact with videos. Well, Google wants to change that with the latest update.

Comparison Between Old And New Layouts Of YouTube App For TVs

With the new update, when you click on the title of a video, YouTube will shrink the video and show the card beside it, allowing you to watch the video without any obstruction. According to Google, it has made this change with feedback from users who say that they want to multitask while watching the content by being able to access the card (and interact with videos) while watching videos without any obstruction.

Google hasn’t revealed if the company is offering the latest change with an update to the app or with a server-side change. We are already seeing this change on our Toshiba M550LP TV with the Google TV operating system. It should also be live on other TVs, including Samsung TVs with Tizen OS and LG TVs with WebOS.

Creating entries in Google Calendar get even easier

[ad_1]

Last updated: March 14th, 2024 at 04:46 UTC+01:00

Google Calendar for Android lets you create an event, task, or an out-of-office entry (the last option is available only for Google Workspace accounts).

To add those entries, you have to click on the plus icon at the bottom-right corner of the screen, which will bring up three options: Event, Task, and Out of office. Once you select the type of entry, the app will bring up a fullscreen user interface with options for that type of entry. If you need to change the type of entry, you have to go back and re-select what you want. Well, Google is now making a slight change to this arrangement.

According to 9To5Google, the latest version of Google Calendar for Android (version 2024.07.0-608174112) shows you the Event, Task, and Out of office options on the fullscreen UI as well. So, now you can select the type of entry you want by clicking on the plus icon and also from the fullscreen UI. With the new layout, you can change the type of entry after selecting one by clicking on the plus icon, saving you from going back.

Now that the fullscreen UI shows you the Event, Task, and Out of office options, there’s no point for Google Calendar to show those options when you click on the plus icon, and the publication suggests that Google might remove the pop-up menu showing those option when you click on the plus icon. Google had started testing this feature in the beta version of the app in December 2023. Now it has made its way to the stable version of the app.

As pointed out by 9To5Google, the latest feature is a server-side change, and to activate the new layout, you have to open the app, force stop it from the device settings, and then open the app again. We tried this method and it worked for us on our Galaxy S23. Google might be rolling out the new feature in phases. So, not everyone might be able to see it even if they have the latest version of the app or follow the method to activate it.

Galaxy A35 gets a software update less than a week after launch

[ad_1]

The Galaxy A35, along with the Galaxy A55, is the first mid-range Samsung phone that runs Android 14 and One UI 6.1 out of the box. It is eligible for four major OS upgrades and security updates for five years, and software support for the phone is off to a good start.

The Galaxy A35 was announced and went on sale in some markets on Monday, March 11, and just three days later, it is already getting its first software update. It’s unclear how widely it is available, however. As of March 14, we can only confirm that it has been released in India.

The update comes with the firmware version A356XXU1AXBB, and while it’s not just a security update, we don’t know what it brings to the phone as the changelog doesn’t include any specifics. But we can assume that the update doesn’t do much, as it is only around 270MB in size.

It even lacks the March 2024 security patch. The A35 launched with the February security patch preinstalled, and that won’t change once the update in question has been installed on the phone.

Since the Galaxy A35 launched less than a week ago, there probably aren’t a lot of people using it at this time, but the update will be waiting for buyers once they get the A35 and set it up. As with all Galaxy smartphones, updates will be downloadable from the A35’s Settings » Software update menu.

Apple Vision Pro Likely to Launch in These Nine Countries Next

[ad_1]

Apple will soon add 12 new languages to the virtual keyboard on the Vision Pro, based on code discovered by MacRumors. Right now, the Apple Vision Pro keyboard only supports English (US) and Emoji, which makes sense as it is limited to the United States.

apple vision pro virtual keyboard
To bring the Vision Pro to new countries, Apple needs to add support for additional languages. The code indicates the following languages will be added:

  • Cantonese, Traditional
  • Chinese, Simplified
  • English (Australia)
  • English (Canada)
  • English (Japan)
  • English (Singapore)
  • English (UK)
  • French (Canada)
  • French (France)
  • German (Germany)
  • Japanese
  • Korean

It’s likely that these language additions hint at where Apple will launch the Vision Pro next.

When the Vision Pro launched, Apple said that it would bring the Vision Pro to additional countries later this year, but the company did not provide timing. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple will expand Vision Pro availability to additional markets prior to the June Worldwide Developers Conference.

Apple Suppliers Donate to Restore Fund for Sustainable Forests and Other Carbon Removal Projects

[ad_1]

Apple today announced that suppliers Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Japanese company Murata Manufacturing are investing in its Restore Fund, a program aimed at scaling investments in high-quality nature-based carbon removal while also protecting critical ecosystems.

apple restore fund
TSMC is investing up to $50 million and Murata is investing up to $30 million, with the money managed by Climate Asset Management. Apple established the Restore Fund in 2021 with a $200 million donation, and expanded it in 2023 with another $200 million.

Apple is using some of the money to support the creation of sustainably certified working forests on degraded pasture and agricultural lands in South America. The project is meant to meet increasing global demand for timber while reducing pressure on natural forests.

Two of the partners that Apple is working on the forests have planted eucalyptus, an ideal tree for sustainable forests because of its fast growth rate, ability to restore degraded land, and lower water consumption than other kinds of trees.

Apple’s third partner is developing sustainable forests of tropical hardwoods native to Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, with some of the land also going toward restoring tree species that are nearing extinction. The Restore Fund will be used for other projects that focus on ecosystem conservation and restoration, with selection underway. Apple set a goal of removing 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the air by 2025, which it is on track to exceed.

Apple wants to be carbon neutral across its entire supply chain by 2030. More than 300 suppliers have signed up for the Supplier Clean Energy Program that commits them to achieving 100 percent renewable energy for all Apple production by the end of the decade, and Apple has also asked its partners to decarbonize their Apple-related operations.

Brave Browser Reports Spike in EU Installs After iOS 17.4 DMA Changes

[ad_1]

Alternative browser company Brave has reported a sharp increase in iPhone installs since Apple made sweeping changes to iOS in order to comply with the Digital Markets Act in the European Union.

alternative browser list eu
With the recent iOS 17.4 update, users in the EU are presented with a splash screen upon opening Safari that allows them to choose a new default browser.

Apple is not providing just the standard browsers that have been options on iOS in the past, but a list of the most downloaded browsers on iOS devices. Some of the options include Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Brave, and Microsoft Edge.

Brave shared an image on X (Twitter) of a line graph showing the number of Brave browser installations on iOS from mid-January to early March. Daily installs hovered around 7,500 to 10,000, before jumping to just over 11,000 following the release of iOS 17.4 on March 6.

“Monopoly defenders argue that the monopolies simply offer better products,” wrote Brave in a subsequent post. “But as you can see, when consumers get a clear choice of iOS browsers, they’re choosing alternatives to Safari.”

“Maybe that’s why Google still hasn’t implemented a browser choice screen on Android,” added the privacy-centric browser company.

To be eligible for consideration in the alternative browsers list, Apple notes that they must have the Default Browser Entitlement that is now available to developers and have been downloaded by “at least 5,000 users across all the EU App Store storefronts on ‌iPhone‌ in the prior calendar year.”

Apple selects up to 11 of these for the browser choice screen in addition to Safari, updating the list once per calendar year.

Epic Games Accuses Apple of Charging ‘Unjustified Fees’ for Required Non-App Store Purchase Link

[ad_1]

Epic Games is once again after Apple, this time accusing the Cupertino company of violating a court ruling that requires Apple to allow developers to offer in-app links to direct customers to third-party purchase options on the web.

app store blue banner epic 1
Apple tweaked its U.S. App Store policies back in January, and developers are permitted to put one link in their apps that leads to a website where customers can make a purchase without using the in-app purchase system. Apple is still charging commission for these purchases, requiring developers to pay between 12 and 27 percent (three percent lower than the 15/30 standard fee).

‌Epic Games‌ is unhappy with the fee that Apple continues to charge, today telling the court that Apple has not complied with the order, and asking that Apple be held in contempt of court. ‌Epic Games‌ claims that the fees make the links “commercially unusable,” thereby subverting the injunction.

Apple violates the Injunction in three ways. First, with respect to External Links, Apple has imposed new fees and enacted a slew of new rules that work together to make the links commercially unusable. This new fee and accompanying web of restrictions subverts the purpose of the Injunction, allowing Apple to continue extracting its excessive commissions and making it effectively impossible for a developer to inform users about, and direct users toward, an alternative platform for making a purchase.

Second, Apple continues to categorically prohibit any steering using “buttons” or “other calls to action”. Specifically, Apple does not allow External Links that resemble a “button” in any way.

Third, Apple’s Guideline 3.1.3 still prohibits certain apps, including all multiplatform services (i.e., apps that operate across multiple platforms and allow users to access the same content across these platforms, including popular games such as Minecraft), from “within the app, encourag[ing] users to use a purchasing method other than in-app purchase”. This language expressly contravenes the Injunction by prohibiting any steering to alternative purchasing methods.

‌Epic Games‌ collected statements from other developers that have spoken out against Apple’s App Store fees, including Paddle CEO Christian Owens and Down Dog CEO Benjamin Simon.

Apple was initially ordered to make the ‌App Store‌ changes in 2021 as part of its court battle with ‌Epic Games‌. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez-Rogers, who oversaw the case, took issue with Apple’s anti-steering rules. Apple was able to delay implementing the ‌App Store‌ changes for a few years while it appealed, but none of the courts decided to change the verdict. Apple ultimately took it to the Supreme Court, but the court declined to hear the case, so Apple had to comply immediately at the beginning of the year.

‌Epic Games‌ claims that the fee Apple charges for the link is “financially unattractive” for developers who want to choose another payment solution, and it “prevents any meaningful competition between payment solutions.” The company wants the court to require Apple to bring its policies into compliance with the injunction.
