Apple appears to be gearing up to add topographic maps to the Apple Maps apps in iOS 18, macOS 15, and visionOS 2, according to code reviewed by MacRumors.
First introduced with watchOS 10, topographic maps include trails, contour lines, elevation, and points of interest, features that are of use for hiking and other outdoor activities where accurate navigation is essential.
Since debuting topographic maps, Apple has been expanding support throughout the United States, and this year, Apple may be ready to bring it to iOS, macOS, and visionOS.
Backend topographic maps code was introduced last year, but only watchOS 10 had the feature. The code was dormant on iOS and macOS at that time, but in the backend files for iOS 18, macOS 15, and visionOS 2, the code is active, suggesting an expansion.
The possibility of topographic maps follows our report yesterday on another possible Apple Maps feature, support for custom routes. With custom routes, users will presumably be able to create their own routes without being limited to Apple’s pre-selected options.
iOS 18 will be introduced at the Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, June 10, and it appears there will be quite a few new features for Apple Maps. For more details about the update, check out our iOS 18 roundup.

The Tartan Army got a bit of a trouncing last week, losing 4-0 to Netherlands. Although they did not actually play that badly, the result means they have not won in six games and will want to put that right back in front of their own fans.
The visitors did a bit better on their trip to Romania, drawing 1-1 thanks to a goal from Jamie Reid. Michael O’Neill’s side will not be heading to Germany, after a frustrating qualifying campaign. They did pick up a decent win against Denmark during the campaign, showing the hosts cannot take them lightly.
Steve Clarke, though, will be leading his men to Euro 2024. The squad will want to take this opportunity to impress the manager and book their place on that plane. When they last met, it was Scotland that came out on top, winning 1-0. Can they repeat the feat?

The Amazon Big Spring Sale isn’t over yet, and new deals are still popping up all over the site on everything from outdoor cameras to smartwatches—including our favorite budget Apple Watch for 2024. The second-generation Apple Watch SE is 24 percent off, dropping to $189 from $249. It’s not the device’s record-low price, but the $60 off brings it pretty close.
Apple
The second-gen Apple Watch SE garnered an 89 in our review thanks to the comprehensive features it offers for much less money than the company’s alternatives. The smartwatch has all the usual options, like heart-rate monitoring, crash detection, and emergency calling. The retina display offers up to 1,000 nits brightness, and the battery lasts 18 hours.
If you’re considering buying an Apple Watch SE, one thing to keep in mind is that it’s not IPX6 rated for dust resistance like the Series 8 and Ultra. However, it is water resistant up to 50 meters.
Friendly or otherwise, England vs Brazil at Wembley is a marquee fixture, and as Dorival Junior’s first game in charge of the five-time World Cup champions, the Selecao will be doubly keen to put on a show. Here’s where to watch England vs Brazil live streams online for FREE – from anywhere.

The reason Brazil are starting afresh just three months out from Copa America? They’re in a mess, and appointing journeyman coach Dorival – who’s bounced between 25 clubs over the past 22 years, with wildly differing results – demonstrates just how far their star has fallen.
They’ve lost three games in a row, and won just three of their last nine, and with both Ederson and Allison injured, Dorival will have to field an uncapped goalkeeper. On a vaguely positive note, Brazil have a superb record against England, who they’ve lost to just once in their past 11 encounters.
Furthermore, either Ivan Toney or Ollie Watkins will lead the line for the Three Lions, as Harry Kane injured his ankle just before the international break. Gareth Southgate has a near full-strength squad to work with otherwise, and a Real Madrid reunion between Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr. is certainly on the cards.

European Fitbit owners have been dealt a huge blow as Google will be removing all third-party apps and clock faces from all devices existing in the European Economic Area. This includes the entire EU as well as non-members like Iceland.
The tech giant didn’t make any formal announcements through its usual channels. Instead, it opted to update its software management page on the Fitbit Help Center website. There, it’s stated the changes will go into effect sometime in June 2024; an exact date was not given.
A full list of all the affected models is publicly available. They include models like the Fitbit Sense 2, Versa 4, and the Ionic. Although with the last one, you’re probably better off getting rid of it ASAP due to a faulty battery that has caused severe burns.
Users can still install third-party apps on your wearable until the June date. After that, you will only have access to first-party software from Google and Fitbit.
New rules
As to why it’s doing this, Google is pointing the finger at “new regulatory requirements” within Europe. It’s not because of an American law, as the Help Center specifically states “users in other countries will not be impacted.” The company is being purposely vague, although it may have to do with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA).
To oversimplify a complex law, the DMA was created in response to tech corporations having an iron grip over their users and the tech industry as a whole. It’s supposed to break up the amount of power they possess. These companies have, by and large, complied with the new rules in order to stay in Europe. One of the stipulations these companies must adhere to is to foster better compatibility between first-party and third-party software.
For the most part, things have been moving along swimmingly except for this current Fitbit situation. It’s the one outlier in what has been an otherwise smooth transition for Google. Perhaps third-party apps aren’t feasible under the new rules.

Analysis: It’s the same ol’ story
But, there’s something fishy about all this. Why only Fitbit and not other hardware? Well, we have a theory.
The reason why Google is removing third-party apps may be due to the company’s continued efforts at killing off Fitbit, and the DMA is a good excuse to keep doing it. For the past several years, Google has been chipping away at what made Fitbit great in the past. Removing features here, removing access to music streaming there. It’s gotten to the point where Fitbit devices are shadows of their former selves.
At first we thought, “maybe Google wants to maintain total control over their fitness trackers.” Perhaps they believe the DMA will open the floodgates to bad actors creating malicious software for the wearables. It’s a security issue.
But then the Pixel Watch is totally ignored, and it will continue to support third-party apps in the EU. If Google is indeed worried about security on its wearables, then we would see Pixel Watch devices receive similar changes. However, that’s not the case.
Keep in mind: this is simply a theory. Nothing has been said officially. We reached out for a comment and we’ll update this story if we hear back.
No. 13 plays No. 4 in the First Round of March Madness 2024 as the Vermont Catamounts take on the Duke Blue Devils at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY, in the South Regional.
Vermont vs Duke is on CBS in the US. Tip-off is 7.10pm ET / 11.10pm GMT on March 22.
No. 13 seed Vermont take on No. 4 seed Duke tonight. After winning eight straight America East regular-season titles, Vermont secured their 10th bid in the last 20 NCAA tournaments. The Catamounts have developed a defensive style which enables them to control the tempo of games but against a significantly more physical and larger opponent they will struggle to hold Duke off.
On the other side, the Duke Blue Devils need no introduction. A perennial powerhouse in college basketball, Duke boasts a passionate fan base. According to Duke coach, Jon Scheyer, the team have been too slow to start from tip-off and said practices have included simulating the start of games. Duke senior guard Jeremy Roach is targeting a solid showing in his last dance.
“We have really the best — I think the best team in the country just talent-wise,” the senior told NBC. “I mean obviously talent can get you so far, but you gotta compete every day and I think that’s just the been the biggest thing for us just competing for all 40 minutes.”

Apple has ended a project to develop microLED displays in-house, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman in a reversal of his prior reporting on the development of the technology. Apple invested billions in developing microLED displays, with plans to first add microLED to the Apple Watch Ultra.
MicroLED was too expensive and too complex for Apple to design, so Apple is now reorganizing its display engineering teams and laying off employees in the U.S. and Asia. Some of the displaced employees may be able to find other roles in the company, and others will be provided with severance.
Rumors that Apple had canceled plans for an Apple Watch with microLED first surfaced in February when supplier ams OSRAM said that a “cornerstone project” related to microLED had been canceled. Soon after, there were rumors that Apple had ended its relationship with Kulicke & Soffa, another company in the advanced display market.
Both analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Display Supply Chain Consultants confirmed that Apple had canceled work on a microLED Apple Watch after these rumors, but Gurman claimed that Apple was still working on the device. In a now-deleted tweet, Gurman said that ams OSRAM was “one supplier” on the project, and that there were several other suppliers Apple was working with. “I doubt it was canceled,” he wrote.
DigiTimes and ETNewsalso suggested that ams OSRAM was replaced due to a performance drop and that Apple had another supplier lined up, but it appears that information was incorrect.
MicroLED technology uses microscopic LEDs for individual pixels. It’s more energy efficient than traditional LED, offers improved contrast, and has faster response times. Colors are brighter and better, and there’s no risk of burn-in as there is with OLED. Apple is said to have abandoned the project because it was not economically viable.
Gurman claims that Apple will stick with OLED display technology for the Apple Watch “for now,” but that the company is “eyeing microLED for other projects down the road.” Apple is “identifying” potential new suppliers and processes for microLED, but it “won’t likely happen anytime soon.”
Apple’s iPhone development roadmap runs several years into the future and the company is continually working with suppliers on several successive iPhone models concurrently, which is why we sometimes get rumored feature leaks so far ahead of launch.
