Check Out This Apple Watch iPad Demo Unit From 2014

[ad_1]

With the 10th anniversary of the Apple Watch approaching, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at an interesting bit of Apple Watch history.

apple watch ipad demo 1
After the Apple Watch was announced in 2014, and before it became available in 2015, Apple sent out custom Apple Watch iPad demo kiosks to retail stores. The Apple Watch and ‌iPad‌ units used for these devices were specially designed, had custom software, and represent the first and only time that an Apple Watch was able to pair with an ‌iPad‌.

AppleDemoYT, known for sourcing rare prototypes, shared images and detailed information about the demo units with MacRumors, offering up detailed insight on the lengths Apple went to for this custom experience. AppleDemoYT was able to acquire one of these now-rare demo units.

Jony Ive and his design team came up with the Apple Watch ‌iPad‌ Kiosks as a way for customers to try out an Apple Watch without needing help from an employee. Apple used a modified iPad mini 2 running iOS 8.2 paired with an original Apple Watch running watchOS 1.0, with the two devices fused in a custom housing.

The ‌iPad‌ Apple used had multiple components removed, including the camera, microphone, and speakers, and the housing of the setup served as the body of the ‌iPad‌. The Apple Watch was heavily modified as well, featuring a groove along the diagnostic port for cable routing, holes to affix it to the demo unit, and a special Sport Band that was shorter than normal.

apple watch ipad demo 3apple watch ipad demo 3
The Apple Watch was paired to the ‌iPad‌ using a wired connection. A lightning cable attached to the Apple Watch diagnostic port connected to a converter board inside the ‌iPad‌, allowing the ‌iPad‌ to communicate with and charge the Apple Watch. A special app called Apple Watch Demo was used to allow the Apple Watch to interface with the ‌iPad‌, and a connection to Apple’s server was required.

apple watch ipad demo 4apple watch ipad demo 4
The server that Apple used for the Apple Watch Demo app has long since gone offline, so the only way to see how the setup worked is through a demo unit that was paired in 2014 and not reset since then. With a functional unit, the ‌iPad‌ is able to mirror the Apple Watch, offering up transition animations and providing tips on the actions that can be performed on the Apple Watch. This functionality is demoed in AppleDemoYT’s video:

The custom ‌iPad mini‌ was not only the sole model able to connect with an Apple Watch, it was also the only ‌iPad‌ that could be charged using MagSafe 2, originally designed for the Mac. A ‌MagSafe‌ connector charged the ‌iPad‌, Apple Watch, and extra batteries inside the ‌iPad‌. A Lightning port is available as well, but Apple’s documentation suggests that it is only meant to be used for data transfer.

Apple discontinued the demo unit in 2016 because it was riddled with issues. Updates to the ‌iPad‌ or Apple Watch would erase demo content, and the front glass was prone to cracking because of the design of the housing. Batteries degraded quickly due to the always-on charging, and overheating and failure were continual problems. Apple also had to deal with pairing and syncing issues, and that caused Apple to tweak the interactive part of the demo functionality in 2015. After that change, the ‌iPad‌ provided Apple Watch info, but no longer mirrored the content on the Apple Watch.

apple watch ipad demo 5apple watch ipad demo 5
Demo units that were decommissioned were supposed to be destroyed, and so finding one that is still available, functional, and in good working condition is unusual. The Apple Watch ‌iPad‌ kiosk represents one of the most advanced custom devices that Apple had designed at the time, and it offers a neat look back at the Apple Watch’s debut.

Rumors suggest that Apple has plans for the 10th anniversary of the Apple Watch, and as soon as this year, we may see a redesigned “Apple Watch X” with an updated magnetic band attachment system, new health features, and more.

Kuo: Apple Watch Ultra to Get ‘Almost No’ Hardware Upgrades This Year

[ad_1]

Just over six months ago, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the likelihood of a new Apple Watch Ultra being released in 2024 was “decreasing,” but it now sounds like there will be an Apple Watch Ultra 3 this year after all.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 hero feature blorange
In a direct message shared with MacRumors today, Kuo said that while the Apple Watch Ultra will be updated this year, the new model will have “almost no” hardware upgrades compared to the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Kuo did not reveal any specific changes planned for the Apple Watch Ultra 3, which will presumably launch in September.

A third-generation Apple Watch SE is also a possibility this year if Apple sticks to a two-year upgrade cycle for that model, but the successor to the Apple Watch Series 9 is not entirely clear. Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman previously reported about a redesigned “Apple Watch X” with a thinner case and magnetic bands, but he said it would be released “in 2024 or 2025,” so it is not clear if it will launch this year or next year.

In any case, Gurman previously said the model that succeeds the Apple Watch Series 9 will offer blood pressure sensing and sleep apnea detection, and these features would almost certainly extend to the Apple Watch Ultra 3.

The original Apple Watch was unveiled in September 2014, and launched in April 2015, so the device is approaching its tenth anniversary.

Change the name of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, AirPods

[ad_1]

You can change the name of your Apple devices, whether you have an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, AirPods or Apple TV. By default, it’s just “[your name]’s iPhone.” But you can give your iPhone its own unique name, like Kit-Kat or Magic Rectangle.

Also by default, when you set up a new iPhone, the name is transferred. This can get confusing if you keep old phones around because you’ll see “John’s iPhone,” “John’s iPhone (2),” maybe even “John’s iPhone (3)” and more. The same is true for Apple Watch, Mac, iPad and AirPods.

The name of your device shows up among a bunch of Apple features like AirDrop, Find My, Personal Hotspot, AirPlay and more. If you use these features often, giving it a unique name will make it easier to identify.

Here’s how to fix this mess on all your Apple devices. Keep reading or watch our video.

How to change the name of your Apple devices

Skip to section:

  1. iPhone and iPad
  2. Apple Watch
  3. Mac
  4. AirPods
  5. Apple TV

Change iPhone or iPad name

Setting to change iPhone name
This setting is in the same place on iPad, too.
Screenshot: D. Griffin Jones/Cult of Mac

To change the name of your iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > About > Name. Type in a different name and hit Done.

If you use your iPhone as a Personal Hotspot, the name of your phone will be set as the name of the Wi-Fi network others connect to.

Change Apple Watch name

Setting to change Apple Watch name
Find it inside the Watch app.
Screenshot: D. Griffin Jones/Cult of Mac

To change the name of an Apple Watch, open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap General > About > Name. Type in a different name and hit Done.

If you ever need to find a missing Apple Watch, the name you give it will be the name that appears in your list of devices in Find My.

Change Mac name

Setting to change Mac name
It doesn’t look like a text box, but you can click on it to change the name.
Screenshot: D. Griffin Jones/Cult of Mac

On a Mac running macOS 13 Ventura or later, open System Settings. In the sidebar, click General > About. The Name field is editable — click on the name and type in the name you want.

The name you give your Mac is the name that appears in AirDrop — the fastest way to transfer files from iPhone-to-Mac, Mac-to-Mac or iPad-to-Mac.

On a Mac running macOS 12 Monterey or earlier, open System Preferences and click Sharing. You can change name in the Computer Name text box on the top of the panel.

Change AirPods name

Setting to change AirPods name
This setting only appears when you have your AirPods connected.
Screenshot: D. Griffin Jones/Cult of Mac

First, you need to connect your AirPods to your iPhone. Open Settings and you should see your AirPods right on top. Tap on them, then tap Name. Enter in a more descriptive name if you want.

If you need to differentiate your AirPods with someone else’s, a good way to know they’re yours is with a case or with stickers. I would give the AirPods a matching name — Purple AirPods, Black AirPods, Hello Kitty AirPods, etc.

Change Apple TV name

Setting to change Apple TV name
Change the name here.
Screenshot: D. Griffin Jones/Cult of Mac

To change the name of an Apple TV, go to Settings > General > About > Name. You can hold down the Siri button to speak into the remote or pick up your iPhone to type in a name using its keyboard.

The name of your Apple TV comes up if you’re trying to AirPlay content to a bigger screen. If you have multiple Apple TVs in the house, it’s easier to differentiate “Living Room” and “Bedroom” than “Apple TV” and “Apple TV (2).”

TAG Heuer Kith Formula 1 Watch 2024: Prices, Specs, Availability

[ad_1]

Concessions to modernity include sapphire crystal instead of plastic for the dial covering on these new models, and high-grade rubber straps instead of the plastic of old. The range includes five versions with stainless steel cases (two of which have black PVD coatings to match their bezels), and five featuring cases in the original Arnite, in fun colorways designed in partnership with New York-based Kith.

Ronnie Fieg, Kith’s founder and an influential figure in today’s streetwear and sneaker world, is also a passionate collector of vintage TAG Heuer Formula 1s. The all-plastic versions, plus two steel versions with bright blue and green bezels respectively, are exclusive to Kith—find them in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Toronto, Hawaii, Tokyo and Paris, or on its website.

But expect to move fast, because if the MoonSwatch is any precedent, the scalpers will move faster—notwithstanding the fact that at $1,350, the new Formula 1s are five times the price of a MoonSwatch.

But they are rare: there are only 250 examples each of the Kith exclusive all-Arnite models, and 350 of the two steel Kith exclusives. The two models with black-coated steel cases, also with green or blue bezels and straps, are exclusive to TAG Heuer stores (and will not be online), and limited to 825 pieces each.

Finally, the version with a stainless steel case and bracelet, and black bezel, is shared between both brands, and limited to 1,350 pieces. All models feature quartz movements and 200-meter water resistance, just as the originals did. There is also, according to TAG Heuer’s press release, a boxed set featuring all ten watches, though the brand has yet to confirm how and where it is available.

As well as featuring Kith’s “Just Us” slogan on the dial, the watches are also co-branded, with “Kith” replacing “TAG” in the watchmaker’s logo—the first time TAG Heuer has ever co-branded a watch, and reflective of the company’s keenness to speak to the Gen Z consumers that are meat and drink to brands like Kith.

Indeed, modern TAG Heuer, owned by LVMH, the luxury conglomerate, since 1999, has been going through its own series of rebirths in recent years. These have included the development of its high-end Connected smartwatch; the introduction of lab-grown diamonds for high-end models; attempts (ongoing, but as yet unsuccessful) to revolutionize hairspring production with nano-technology; a recent reintroduction of its long-dormant eyewear business; the introduction, with Citizen’s help, of solar-powered models; and multiple changes in both management, product and pricing strategy.

TAG Heuer F1 watches

Just under 5,000 watches will be available in total from this pimped F1 reissue, spread across 10 limited editions. However, unlike the MoonSwatch, some will be available online.

The Apple Watch Series 9 is back on sale for $299

[ad_1]

If you’ve been planning on buying an Apple Watch Series 9, today looks like a decent time to take the plunge. The smartwatch is currently on sale for $299 at multiple retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy, Target and Walmart. That’s not quite the lowest price we’ve seen — a couple colorways briefly fell to $269 earlier this month, for instance — but steeper discounts have generally been uncommon. This deal takes about $30 off the watch’s typical street price on Amazon, and it’s $100 less than buying from Apple directly. As of this writing, the offer applies to the 41mm non-cellular version of the watch in Midnight, Red, Silver or Starlight. It covers models with a rubber, S/M- or M/L-sized Sport Band or a nylon Sport Loop.

Photo by Cherlynn Low / Engadget

This is one of the lowest prices we’ve seen for Apple’s latest wearable.

$299 at Amazon

We gave the Apple Watch Series 9 a score of 92 in our review last September, and it’s currently the top pick in our guide to the best smartwatches. It runs fast, it’s water-resistant and it can still handle many tasks that’d normally require an iPhone, from checking iMessages to calling on Siri to using Apple Pay. Most of the essential health and fitness tracking features are still here as well, as are safety-related tools like fall detection and an emergency SOS function. Compared to the lower-cost Apple Watch SE, it has a slightly larger display that can stay always-on, which makes it less cumbersome for checking the time at a glance.

New to this model is a handy Double Tap feature, which lets you respond to notifications without having to physically touch the device, and the ability to complete many Siri requests on-device, without having to always be online. It also has double the internal storage (64GB) as the Series 8, and its display’s peak brightness rating (2,000 nits) is twice as high.

That said, the usual caveats with any Apple Watch still apply. The whole thing will only work with iPhones. The battery will last most of a typical day but not much longer. There are better options for sleep tracking. Due to an ongoing patent dispute, Apple has also had to disable the watch’s blood oxygen monitoring feature. In general, there’s no huge need to make the switch if you own an Apple Watch today and are still happy with it. But if you’re looking to upgrade today, this should be a nice value.

Should you buy a refurbished Apple Watch?

[ad_1]

Sustainability Week 2024

This article is part of a series of sustainability themed articles we’re running to observe Earth Day 2024 and promote more sustainable practices. Check out all of our Sustainability Week 2024 content.

If the idea of a refurbished Apple Watch as a way to get one of the smartest wearables on your wrist is appealing, it’s worth giving it some thought. Sure, it represents a way to make a saving on what is a pricey device – and you may be able to save money while still enjoying the peace of mind that comes with buying direct from Apple – but is that all there is to it?

Aside from saving you money, a refurbished Apple Watch can be a more responsible choice, as the materials in the device are being reused rather than wasted. Plus, it offers a way to get an older model that may no longer be sold by Apple.
