Chrome security update improves Mac user privacy and more

[ad_1]

Privacy-preserving URL protection and beefed-up password protection are coming to Google Safe Browsing for the popular Chrome browser for macOS and iOS, Google said Thursday. And the Chrome security update comes to Macs, iPhones and iPads first. Android devices will see them later in March.

Chrome security update: Google Safe Browsing beefed up for macOS and iOS

Google Safe Browsing in Chrome protects against phishing, malware, unwanted software and more. It shows more than 3 million user warnings daily for potential threats, Google said.

But new Chrome security update might increase that number, according to a pair of blog posts from Google (general news and technical details). And the updates are coming to Chrome for macOS and iOS first and to Android users later in March.

Until now Safe Browsing’s Standard protection mode worked from a list of known threat-sites stored on a user’s device. Now, with the Chrome security update, it will check site’s against Google’s server-side list in real time.

That change should block 25% more phishing attempts, according to Google. And it helps spot brand-new threat sites plus those that exist only briefly. Many threat sites pop up for less than 10 minutes, the company noted.

Encryption and other methods added

Google also noted the update uses privacy-enhancing methods like encryption to make sure no one, including Google, knows what websites you go to.

“While this does require some additional horsepower from the browser, we’ve worked to make sure your experience remains smooth and speedy,” the company said.

And while the Chrome security update relates to Safe Browsing’s Standard protection, you can jack it up by turning on Enhanced Protection. That uses artificial intelligence to protect against malicious Chrome extensions, Google said.

Password Checkup updated, too

Google added that Password Checkup on iOS also recently got updated. In addition to calling your attention to compromised passwords, it can now flag weak and reused passwords.

The user gets an alert when entering a bad password. Or they can check passwords any time in Chrome Settings > Safety Check.

For much more detail on the Chrome security update and how the changes work, read Google’s technical blog post.

The latest macOS Sonoma update is reportedly breaking some USB hubs

[ad_1]

Updating to macOS Sonoma 14.4 is breaking the functionality of some USB hubs, according to reports across the web – though it’s unclear how widespread the problem is, or which particular peripherals are affected.

The heads-up first came via AppleInsider readers, but there’s also some discussion on Reddit, Apple support forums, and MacRumors. So far, it appears to be just USB hubs built into monitors affected by the bug, including models from Dell, Samsung, and Gigabyte.

YouTube gets more interactive on TVs with new update

[ad_1]

Last updated: March 14th, 2024 at 07:32 UTC+01:00

Google has announced that it is updating the YouTube app for TV platforms with a redesigned layout for accessing interactive content and information related to a video for offering a better user experience.

Currently, when you click on the title of a video, YouTube brings up a card showing the likes and views counts, upload date, channel information, description, and the comments section. The app lays the card over the video, which obstructs the viewing experience. That’s one of the reasons why people don’t access the card frequently or interact with videos. Well, Google wants to change that with the latest update.

Comparison Between Old And New Layouts Of YouTube App For TVs

With the new update, when you click on the title of a video, YouTube will shrink the video and show the card beside it, allowing you to watch the video without any obstruction. According to Google, it has made this change with feedback from users who say that they want to multitask while watching the content by being able to access the card (and interact with videos) while watching videos without any obstruction.

Google hasn’t revealed if the company is offering the latest change with an update to the app or with a server-side change. We are already seeing this change on our Toshiba M550LP TV with the Google TV operating system. It should also be live on other TVs, including Samsung TVs with Tizen OS and LG TVs with WebOS.

Galaxy A35 gets a software update less than a week after launch

[ad_1]

The Galaxy A35, along with the Galaxy A55, is the first mid-range Samsung phone that runs Android 14 and One UI 6.1 out of the box. It is eligible for four major OS upgrades and security updates for five years, and software support for the phone is off to a good start.

The Galaxy A35 was announced and went on sale in some markets on Monday, March 11, and just three days later, it is already getting its first software update. It’s unclear how widely it is available, however. As of March 14, we can only confirm that it has been released in India.

The update comes with the firmware version A356XXU1AXBB, and while it’s not just a security update, we don’t know what it brings to the phone as the changelog doesn’t include any specifics. But we can assume that the update doesn’t do much, as it is only around 270MB in size.

It even lacks the March 2024 security patch. The A35 launched with the February security patch preinstalled, and that won’t change once the update in question has been installed on the phone.

Since the Galaxy A35 launched less than a week ago, there probably aren’t a lot of people using it at this time, but the update will be waiting for buyers once they get the A35 and set it up. As with all Galaxy smartphones, updates will be downloadable from the A35’s Settings » Software update menu.
