Multiple North Korean state-sponsored hacking groups have been attacking South Korean defense companies for more than a year, stealing login credentials and sensitive data.
A Reuters report, citing South Korea’s law enforcement, claims three major threat actors – Lazarus, Kimsuky, and Andariel, have been going after defense organizations and third-party contractors, planting malicious code in data systems, pulling out passwords and technical information.
The police managed to identify the attackers by tracking their source IP addresses, re-routing architecture of the signals, and the malware signatures.
Lazarus attacks again
The report did not state which organizations were targeted, or what the nature of the data was, but Reuters did hint that South Korea grew into a “major global defense exporter”, with fresh contracts to sell mechanized howitzers, tanks, and fighter jets. The deals were reportedly valued at billions of dollars.
While all three of these threat actors have made headlines before, Lazarus Group is probably the most infamous one. This group was observed targeting cryptocurrency businesses in the west, stealing millions of dollars in crypto tokens, with which the North Korean government apparently finances its nuclear weapons programs.
The biggest crypto heist to happen to this day is the April 2022 breach at the Ronin network, which resulted in the theft of $625 million in various cryptocurrencies. Ronin network is a cryptocurrency bridge developed by the same company behind the hugely popular blockchain-based game, Axie Infinity.
A bridge is a service that allows users to transfer crypto tokens from one network to another.

Besides Ronin, Lazarus Group was also confirmed to be behind the Harmony bridge attack, which happened in June 2022, and resulted in the theft of $100 million.

2024 versions of Smart Monitor M5, M7, and M8 are now available in Korea
Samsung has launched the 2024 versions of Smart Monitor M5, Smart Monitor M7, and Smart Monitor M8 in South Korea. The Smart Monitor M5 is priced at KRW 330,000 ($240) for the 27-inch version and KRW 390,000 ($283) for the 32-inch version. The Smart Monitor M7 is priced at KRW 540,000 ($392) for the 32-inch version and KRW 680,000 ($494) for the 43-inch version. The Smart Monitor M8 costs KRW 850,000 ($618) in Korea.
The Smart Monitor M5 has Full HD resolution and 250 nits brightness, and it comes in 27-inch and 32-inch versions. The Smart Monitor M7 has 4K resolution and comes in 32-inch and 43-inch sizes. The Smart Monitor features 4K resolution, too, but comes in just one size: 43-inch. All these monitors run Tizen OS, bringing access to all the popular audio and video streaming services. They also feature AirPlay and Smart View for screen mirroring from Apple and Samsung devices, respectively.
The Smart Monitor M8 features an AI-capable processor for upscaling low-resolution content. It also features Active Voice Amplifier Pro to make vocals clearer. When connected to compatible Galaxy Buds, it features 360 Audio mode for more immersive audio.
All monitors feature Gaming Hub, Samsung Daily+, Samsung TV Plus, and Workout Tracker. They can display real-time health data from your Galaxy Watch while you work out. Last year was terrible for smartphone brands, as sales declined year-over-year. However, not everything was bad. People have actually started spending more on smartphones, and a new report reveals how much people spend on average. Consumers in Samsung’s home country spent the most on average on smartphones, bringing a good outlook for Galaxy S and Galaxy Z series devices.
South Koreans are lapping up Samsung foldable phones, resulting in rise of average smartphone selling price
According to a new report from market research firm TechInsights, South Korea, Japan, and the US were the top three markets with respect to smartphone Average Selling Price (ASP). The sales of Samsung’s Galaxy Z series foldable phones are among the reasons TechInsights has quoted for the rise in smartphone ASP in South Korea. This figure is estimated to keep rising until at least 2029, which is great news for Samsung’s foldable phones, especially since Samsung has multiple generations of foldable phones. Price growth has also been reported for iPhones in recent years.
In Japan, though, regulatory restrictions on smartphone subsidies have slowed the growth of ASP. Japan was the top-ranked country in terms of smartphone ASP until 2020, but South Korea topped it in 2021. The UK ranked fourth in 2023 but is expected to outgrow the US this year to rank third. This is due to the higher penetration of iPhones in the past couple of years and a faster upgrade cycle. However, the US is estimated to regain its third position in the next few years. The global smartphone market is estimated to grow by 3% in 2024 compared to last year.
While 2023 was bad, the future looks bright for the smartphone market. China, India, and the US are projected to lead smartphone growth. These three countries are expected to contribute almost half the global smartphone revenue by 2024. While India ranks 71st in average smartphone selling price, its massive population will drive revenue for OEMs. This makes India one of the best markets for smartphone brands to invest in, and Samsung is already in a great position. The company was the biggest smartphone brand in India in Q1 2024.
New smartphone form factors, like foldable and rollable phones, and deeper 5G penetration will improve smartphone average selling prices in the coming years. You can read the complete TechInsights report here to see data on 88 markets.

In a move to cut its dependency on Nvidia‘s high-cost AI chips, Naver, the South Korean equivalent of Google, has signed a 1 trillion won ($750 million) agreement with Samsung.
The deal will see the tech giant supply its more affordable Mach-1 chips to Naver, by the end of 2024.
The Mach-1 chip, currently under development, is an AI accelerator in the form of a SoC that combines Samsung’s proprietary processors and low-power DRAM chips to reduce the bottleneck between the GPU and HBM.
Just the start
The announcement of the Mach-1 was made during Samsung’s 55th regular shareholders’ meeting. Kye Hyun Kyung, CEO of Samsung Semiconductor, said the chip design had passed technological validation on FPGAs and that finalization of SoC was in progress.
The exact volume of Mach-1 chips to be supplied and prices are still under discussion, but The Korea Economic Daily reports that Samsung intends to price the Mach-1 AI chip at around $3,756 each. The order is expected to be for somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 units.
Naver plans to use Samsung’s Mach-1 chips to power servers for its AI map service, Naver Place. According to The Korea Economic Daily, Naver will order further Mach-1 chips if the initial batch performs as well as hoped.
Samsung sees this deal with Naver as just the start. The tech giant is reportedly in supply talks with Microsoft and Meta Platforms who, like Naver, are actively seeking to reduce their reliance on Nvidia’s AI hardware.

With the Naver deal, Samsung is also looking to better compete with its South Korean rival SK Hynix, which is the dominant player in the advanced HBM segment. Samsung has been heavily investing in HBM recently and at the start of March announced the industry’s first 12-stack HBM3E 12H DRAM. This reportedly outperforms Micron’s 24GB 8H HBM3E in terms of capacity and bandwidth and is expected to begin shipping in Q2 this year.
Earlier this year, Samsung announced its first one-of-a-kind wireless speaker called the Music Frame at CES 2024. It can be used as a standalone wireless speaker or paired with a Samsung TV or a combination of a Samsung TV and a Samsung soundbar. After launching it in the US, Samsung has launched it in South Korea.
Samsung Music Frame is now available for purchase in South Korea
The Music Frame (LS60D) speaker is now available in South Korea with a price tag of KRW 599,000 ($445). It can be purchased from Samsung Stores, Samsung’s online store, and other authorized retailers across the country.
Music Frame features
Samsung’s new wireless speaker has an audio output of 120W RMS, thanks to its six-speaker setup featuring two tweeters, two mid-range drivers, and two woofers. Its audio is tuned by Samsung Audio Lab and features Dolby Atmos. It can be linked to Samsung TVs and soundbars wirelessly via Q-Symphony 3.0. It can be placed on a table or mounted on a wall. It can also be paired with another Music Frame, so you can have two Music Frame speakers connected to your Samsung TV.
It also features Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, Alexa Connect, and Spotify Connect, so you can play music wirelessly in a variety of ways. It also features Alexa and Google Assistant for voice commands. It also acts as a SmartThings Hub, which means it can act as a hub for all your smart home devices. You can watch the speaker in action in our hands-on video below.
Yong Seok-woo, President of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Division, said, “We have actively accepted consumers’ opinions that design is important when purchasing audio products, and have introduced a music frame that reflects both sophisticated design and sound quality. We will continue to meet the diverse needs and lifestyles of consumers in the future.” “We will lead the market with innovative products that can meet the needs of our customers.“
Samsung has started rolling out the April 2024 security update to the Galaxy S24 series. The update is currently rolling out in South Korea and could be released in other countries within a matter of days. It is surprising to see the April 2024 update arrive even before March has ended.
April 2024 security update for Galaxy S24 fixes remaining camera issues
The new software update for the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra is available in South Korea with firmware version S92xNKSU1AXCA. The update has a download size of around 797.83MB, which is decently big, and you should consider downloading it via a Wi-Fi network. It includes the April 2024 security patch, but Samsung hasn’t revealed which security vulnerabilities it has fixed with the new patch.
If you have a Galaxy S24 series phone and live in South Korea, you can now check for the new update on your phone. You can do that by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping Download and install. The new firmware files will be available in our firmware database shortly.
