Tesla CEO Elon Musk sparked debate this week when he took to X (formerly Twitter) to reveal that any Model Y built over the “past several months” is capable of an electric range in excess of the stated 260 miles, but unlocking this could come at a cost.

“The “260 mile” range Model Y’s built over the past several months actually have more range that can be unlocked for $1,500 to $2,000 (gains 40 to 60 miles of range), depending on which battery cells you have,” Musk posted.

That’s an equivalent of around £1,195 or AUS$2,270, although the upgrade hasn’t been confirmed for any other markets.

In fact, Musk added “working through regulatory approvals to enable this,” to caveat the fact that the possibility of a one-time-purchase to unlock the full potential of the onboard battery packs has yet to be officially signed off.

The Model Y Musk refers to has actually now been phased out, with a 320-mile version replacing it, which came with a $2,000 price hike but offered around 60 additional miles between Supercharger stops for the money.

But Musk’s social media post suggests that customers of the older Model Y will be able to experience similar range estimates, so long as they are prepared to pay for an over-the-air update.

Predictably, it has caused arguments among internet commentators and owners of the 260-mile Model Y, with some suggesting that offering additional range is a good thing, while others vehemently disagree.

“What gets at me is that if you aren’t paying for the extended range, you are still lugging around all of that unusable capacity everywhere you go, and the weight associated with it. So you are paying for the downsides of the feature (increased weight and thus charging cost) without any of the upsides,” one comment on The Verge‘s website read in response to the story.

However, this isn’t the first time Tesla has employed this strategy, as owners of the updated Model S, released in 2016, could pay to unlock an additional 5kWh from the onboard battery packs. The fee back then was $3,250 (around £2,590 / AU$4,910).

Analysis: Paywalls proving tricky for automakers

You’ve probably heard the phrase “Software Defined Vehicle” (SDV) banded around a lot lately, as today’s automakers are desperately trying to turn modern cars – particularly electric vehicles – into rolling smartphones on wheels.

Part of the reason is more convenient servicing schedule reminders, the chance to update vehicle settings over-the-air, and delivering new infotainment features. But the other reason is to create a fresh flow of revenue from subscription-based services.

Both Mercedes-Benz and Polestar offered their EV customers the chance to unlock additional horsepower for a fee, while BMW famously decided to lock heated seat functionality behind a paywall, only to reverse the decision after customer backlash.

It’s a tricky line to toe, as most automotive customers are used to paying for the trim and specification level at point of sale, not digging deep later on to unlock features that the car in question is already capable of.

But producing just one variation on the production line is a far savvier business decision, as it saves time and additional expense, not to mention the fact that the big automotive players can ensure a regular revenue stream from users subscribing to higher levels of infotainment or increased power outputs.

Tesla has often been a trail-blazer in this respect and, by and large, its tech-savvy early adopters have embraced subscribing to things like Autopilot or Full Self-Driving technology. That’s not to say the remainder of the car-buying public will be so willing.

Mercedes-Benz has revealed an upgraded version of its luxury electric sedan, with more tech, an increased range and the reintroduction of the upright bonnet star all featuring in the upcoming EQS.

The model, which has been under scrutiny for its shocking residual values, has been given the once-over to ensure it remains competitive, with the 55-inch MBUX Hyperscreen now coming as standard across the range.

This gargantuan infotainment system sees three displays merge seamless across the dash, giving the interior the look and feel of a NASA control room. On the outside, there’s a darker grille cover and reworked headlights, as well as the upright star bonnet badge, which was famous for going missing on classic Mercedes vehicles of the 70s and 80s.

Perhaps more important to potential owners is the fact that new batteries have been fitted, which are almost 10kWh up on the previous 108.4kWh packs, delivering an additional 51-miles of range. Couple this with some aerodynamic tweaks to the bodywork and Merc reckons you can achieve more than 500 miles before it requires plugging in. That’s almost 100 miles more than the top spec Tesla Model S.

Inside, the EQS is as opulent as it ever has been, with things like chrome ventilation outlets, Nappa leather cushions and the option of footrests and tilting massage seats in the rear. Oh, and you’ll be able to enjoy Will.i.am’s MBUX Sound Drive app, which turns every EV journey into a DJ experience where the vehicle remixes popular tunes.

But what about those resale values?

Residual values – or the rate at which a new car depreciates – has long been an issue that has dogged electric vehicles, particularly those that inhabit the luxury car segment.

We have long commented on the used car bargains that can be found when scouring the web for a low mileage Porsche Taycan, while Tesla’s penchant for slashing its prices has seen the cost of second-hand models fall dramatically. So much so, that huge rental companies, such as Hertz, are removing Tesla from the fleet, as the lofty maintenance fees and poor resale values aren’t good for business.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS was singled-out in a recent study in the US, which claimed the vehicle lost nearly half its original value in a year. It seems harsh but a quick scout around the popular used car sales websites in the UK reveals that low-mileage 2022 models can be picked up for around £60,000 (around $75,000 / AU$115,500).

Pricing is yet to be revealed for the updated EQS, but you can expect it to be around £120,000 (around $150,000 / AU$230,000). It doesn’t take a mathematician to work out that it likely isn’t the most lucrative investment.

The Range Rover Evoque changed Land Rover forever. Before its launch in 2012, the 4×4 maker’s SUVs were attractive, but in a functional, boxy sort of way. After it, the British brand was as much about the latest trends and fashion as off-roading and country estates.

Speaking at the launch event in 2012, Victoria Beckham spoke about her hand in creating it. “I’ve designed a car that I want to drive,” she said at the time. Since then, however, chief creative officer Gerry McGovern has corrected matters somewhat, stating that Posh Spice exaggerated her role in the creation of the Evoque.

Still, by 2016, more than half a million Evoques have been sold globally in more than 180 countries, with Land Rover describing it as its “greatest sales success story.”

It’s hardly surprising, then, considering the model’s history, that the designers of the latest Evoque opted to take an evolutionary approach in terms of technology to the urban-orientated SUV.

This iteration comes in four different models; Range Rover Evoque S, Dynamic SE, Dynamic HSE, and finally Autobiography, all of which have a plug-in hybrid option. WIRED got its hands on the top-end Autobiography model on a brand-hosted drive in the Champagne wine region in the northeast of France. But will it be a vintage year for JLR?

On the surface the changes are subtle; inside is where the overhaul has really happened. That said, the Evoque’s exterior presence is enhanced by a new grille and revised super-slim Pixel LED headlights with signature DRL (daytime running lights), which deliver a technical, jewel-like appearance. New exterior accents also complement the characteristic “floating roof” that defines Range Rover’s design DNA.

The new super-slim Pixel LED headlights aren’t just for show, either—they house JLR’s new advanced headlight tech. Each light has 26 individual LED segments, which switch on or off automatically to supposedly provide the most effective forward beam at all times. These segments are also home to sensors, which scan the roads ahead and at each side. When another vehicle is in sight, the LEDs within the section it’s covering shut off, ensuring that you are not blinding any oncoming vehicle.

Speed-capturing cameras placed within the headlights pick up speed warning signs, instantly letting you know what speed you should be going on any given road. However, when driving down the freeway, the cameras would occasionally pick up side road signs, and in doing so show an incorrect reading on the dash.

The Evoque does channel its big brother, the flagship Range Rover to good effect inside, with comfortable seats, high-end materials, and a slick touchscreen infotainment system that’s consumed all the tech around it from previous examples. Samsung’s new Bespoke AI appliances really seem to be the perfect choice for anyone, especially Galaxy fans and tech enthusiasts. I never thought I’d be interested in a home appliance like I’ve been in Samsung’s Bespoke family recently, but here we are. The more I learn about Bespoke, the more I want a dream kitchen enabled by Samsung’s clever technologies.

Samsung’s new home appliances are smarter and adopt mobile technologies to a greater extent than you might think. And one of the things that really caught my eye when I saw Samsung’s new Bespoke Range with Smart Oven is that it can live stream to the user’s phone.

That’s right! The Bespoke Range is equipped with what Samsung calls a “Smart Over Camera.” The Range connects to the internet via Wi-Fi, and with the help of the Smart Oven Camera, it can live stream videos to your phone through the SmartThings app anytime, anywhere. You can even record your cooking remotely.

This feature is extended into the social media world. Users can take snapshots and create time-lapse videos of their cooking, which they can then share on social media.

And because the Bespoke range is integrated with SmartThings, it also makes cooking easier. Users can download settings for various cooking modes, such as “Spare Rib,” Brownie,” or “Pizza,” to name a few, directly to the oven. When a mode is picked, the oven sets the optimal temperature automatically.

An oven that cleans itself

I must admit I’m not the best of cooks, and in small part, that’s because I find traditional kitchen appliances rather dull and because I don’t enjoy the cleaning process nearly as much as I enjoy the cooking. I’d use my oven more often if the cleaning part was less tedious.

You can imagine my surprise when I learned that Samsung’s Bespoke Range — whether it’s gas-powered or electric — has a “Self Clean” oven. Samsung says this mode, called Self Clean, “deeply cleans your oven with high heat that breaks down grease and food residue.”

And if you don’t want to go all-in on the deep-cleaning process, the Bespoke Range with Oven has a “Steam Clean” mode for a lighter cleaning process that’s only 20 minutes long. This Self Cleaning mode alone kind of makes me want to have a smarter kitchen. I’m not sure it would make me a better cook, but it would probably make the cooking process a lot more fun.

Samsung’s Bespoke kitchen appliances are more than just simple equipment for cooking food. And the way they integrate with mobile technology is something some of us could only dream of a few years ago. I never thought I’d say this, but they probably are the best choice for tech enthusiasts and smartphone users.

Lenovo has launched its new ThinkPad L series of business laptops, featuring a variety of models in different sizes, including 13-inch, 13-inch 2-in-1, 14-inch and, for the first time, a 16-inch model for those needing a larger display.

The ThinkPad L13 Gen 5 and L13 2-in-1 Gen 5 models are powered by Intel Core Ultra processors and come with up to 32GB LPDDR5 RAM and up to 1TB PCIe 4×4 M.2 2280 storage. The ThinkPad L14 Gen 5 and L16 Gen 1 models are offered with either an Intel Core Ultra processor or an AMD Ryzen 7030 Series CPU, and come with up to 64GB DDR5 RAM and up to 2TB PCIe 4×4 M.2 2280 storage.

All models in the ThinkPad L series come with Windows 11 Pro and are equipped with Dolby Audio Speaker Systems, HD RGB or 5MP RGB+InfraRed cameras with privacy shutters, and support for up to Wi-Fi 7 (Intel only) or Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.

Enhanced repairability

Lenovo has also enhanced repairability in the L14 Gen 5 and L16 Gen 1 models, thanks to a partnership with iFixit.

Announced at MWC 2024, Lenovo says this collaboration has resulted in devices that are easy to repair and upgrade, with readily available customer replaceable units (CRU) such as DIMM, keyboard, SSD, and WWAN. This not only extends the lifespan of the laptops but also helps reduce electronic waste.

Lenovo has also unveiled the latest additions to its X13 laptop series – ThinkPad X13 Gen 5 and X13 2-in-1 Gen 5 models, which are powered by Intel Core Ultra processors. They come with up to 64GB LPDDR5x memory and up to 2TB storage.

“Lenovo’s newest business laptops, the ThinkPad L series and ThinkPad X13 series, underscore Lenovo’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, offering features like easier repairability, increased use of recycled materials, and more efficient power management,” said Tom Butler, executive director, IDG Commercial Product Portfolio, Lenovo.

“With powerful processing capabilities designed for AI-optimized experiences, built-in security, and enhanced manageability, these laptops are ideal for business professionals seeking high-performance and more eco-friendly technology.”

The new Lenovo ThinkPad L models will be available starting Q2, with the L14 priced at $1,199 and the L16 at $1,119. The L13 and L13 2-in-1 will start at $1,169 and $1,319 respectively. The new ThinkPad X13 will be priced at $1,539 and the X13 2-in-1 at $1,809.

Samsung has launched the AI EcoBubble range of front-load fully automatic washing machines in India. For now, the company has revealed only one model in the lineup, WW11CG604DLB, and it should take the wrap off other models in the series in the next few days. Along with that, the brand has announced features, price range, and availability details of the new washing machine range.

The AI EcoBubble washing machines come with many technologies, including AI Wash, AI Energy Mode, Auto Dispense, and Q-Drive. According to Samsung, all those technologies help in improving soil removal by 24%, giving 45.5% better fabric care, protecting clothes by up to 20%, and saving energy by up to 70%.

AI Ecobubble is a combination of Q-Bubble and QuikDrive. The former offers “dynamic drum rotation with additional water shots to create more abundant and powerful bubbles for faster detergent penetration”, whereas, the latter “reduces wash time by up to 50%” On the other hand, AI Wash, along with Auto Dispense, “senses the weight of the load and optimizes the amount of water and detergent required,” and “detects the softness of the fabric and adjusts the wash and spin times to protect it.”

These washing machines also come with Wi-Fi, allowing you to control them from the SmartThings app using your smartphone or tablet.

Pricing and availability details

The AI Ecobubble range of washing machines starts at INR 67,990 and goes up to INR 71,990 and will be available in India from 7 March 2024 on the company’s official online store, Samsung Shop App, and authorized e-commerce platforms and retail stores. The company is offering a 20-year warranty on the motors of these washing machines.

Samsung has listed only one AI EcoBubble washing machine on its website for now, WW11CG604DLB, which has an 11KG capacity and is available in Black. The MRP of the product is INR 67,990 but the company is selling it for INR 53,000. Expect Samsung to make other models in the lineup available to purchase in the next few weeks.

Volkswagen has announced that the new long-range Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid is now available to order in Europe and the car starts at €48,655 Euros on the road. Volskwagen has now started pre-orders of this new model and other new models in the Tiguan range.

The plug-in hybrid drives of the Tiguan have been completely newly designed by Volkswagen and deliver a system power of 150 kW (204 PS) and 200 kW (272 PS). Thanks to a battery that now offers a capacity of 19.7 kWh (net), the electric range has practically doubled compared with the predecessor. With electric ranges of up to approx. 120 km on a single battery charge, the Tiguan eHybrid models practically become electric cars in everyday life. With the combination of an 85 kW electric drive motor and the new 1.5-litre TSI engine (110 kW or 130 kW), the hybrid model is also impressive on long journeys with low consumption values and combined ranges of more than 900 km. The battery of both models can be charged with up to 11 kW (previously 3.6 kW) at a domestic socket or wall box and with up to 50 kW at DC quick-charging stations when out and about.
