First iPhone Game Boy emulator quickly disappears from App Store

A Game Boy emulator was added to the iPhone App Store over the weekend. This might be proof that Apple really has removed restrictions blocking retro game emulators.

Trouble is, the iGBA app has already been kicked out of the software store. But it was a very dodgy app that allegedly ripped off the work of another developer so its removal may have nothing to do with recent changes in Apple policy.

Hurray, the first Game Boy emulator on the App Store!

For many years, Apple prohibited developers from listing retro game emulators for download on the App Store. It actively took down any such that have slipped through its review process.

But in early April, the company updated the App Store guidelines to allow this type of software. It was part of Apple loosening previous rules forbidding developers from making applications that are bundles of mini-apps.

iGBA: GBA & GBC Retro Emulator is apparently the first application introduced after the change. Its appearance on Saturday ordinarily would be a a cause for joy — people have wanted a Game Boy emulator for iPhone for many years.

And while the software was loaded with advertising, that’s typical of free games. Users also complained that it was tracking their locations, which is also not that usual for free games — more people should check how they’re being tracked by “free” apps.

And it’s gone

But then on Sunday developer Riley Testut posted on a variety of social media platforms, “So apparently Apple approved a knock-off of GBA4iOS — the predecessor to Delta I made in high school — in the App Store. I did not give anyone permission to do this.”

GBA4iOS is a Game Boy Advance emulator Testut released many years ago. He’s also the developer of AltStore.

His complaint appears to have been what it took to get iGBA: GBA & GBC Retro Emulator kicked off the App Store. It was reportedly removed because of copyright violations and spam.

So those looking to see whether Apple really, truly means it when it says retro game emulators for iPhone are now allowed still don’t know for sure one way or the other.

‘Palm Royale’ quickly becomes latest Apple TV+ success

The Apple TV+ comedy Palm Royale shot to near the top of the streaming ratings charts immediately after its debut.

And the crime-drama Manhunt also continues to draw a large audience on Apple’s streaming service.

Apple TV+ for the win

Apple TV+ is one of the smaller streaming services, but keeps producing shows with outsize popularity. That includes Severance and Ted Lasso that pull in enough viewers to become cultural phenomena.

Plus there are plenty more that score near the top of the ratings charts, like Slow Horses, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and Shrinking. And there are two current shows doing just as well.

Palm Royale popularity starts off strong

Emmy and Oscar nominee Kristen Wiig created plenty of funny characters on Saturday Night Live and in movies like Bridesmaids. Now she stars in Palm Royale, which premiered on Apple TV+ on March 20.

The series ranks No. 5 on ReelGood’s list of Top 10 TV shows on streaming during the week ending March 27. And it’s at No. 7 on JustWatch‘s list of top streaming shows for the week ending March 24.

Estimates from companies like JustWatch and Reelgood are necessary because streaming services rarely reveal how many people watch their offerings.

Apple says of its new comedy:

It has some amazing acting talent, with the cast including Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Ricky Martin, Mindy Cohn, Bruce Dern and the iconic Carol Burnett.

Manhunt crime-drama finds a big audience, too

Apple TV+ has found success with historical dramas recently, and that includes Manhunt ever since its March 15 launch.

The series ranks No. 8 on the ReelGoods list of Top 10 TV shows on streaming last week, while it’s at No. 9 on the JustWatch list of top streaming series.

History tells us that stage actor John Wilkes Booth (played in the Apple TV+ series by Anthony Boyle) went on the run for 12 days after he shot Lincoln in the back of the head at Ford’s Theatre in 1865.

Apple says of its new show:

Manhunt is a conspiracy thriller about one of the best known but least understood crimes in history, the astonishing story of the hunt for John Wilkes Booth in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.”

Solar-Powered Farming Is Quickly Depleting the World’s Groundwater Supply

That is certainly the case in Yemen, on the south flank of the Arabian Peninsula, where the desert sands have a new look these days. Satellite images show around 100,000 solar panels glinting in the sun, surrounded by green fields. Hooked to water pumps, the panels provide free energy for farmers to pump out ancient underground water. They are irrigating crops of khat, a shrub whose narcotic leaves are the country’s stimulant of choice, chewed through the day by millions of men.

For these farmers, the solar irrigation revolution in Yemen is born of necessity. Most crops will only grow if irrigated, and the country’s long civil war has crashed the country’s electricity grid and made supplies of diesel fuel for pumps expensive and unreliable. So, they are turning en masse to solar power to keep the khat coming.

The panels have proved an instant hit, says Middle East development researcher Helen Lackner of SOAS University of London. Everybody wants one. But in the hydrological free-for-all, the region’s underground water, a legacy of wetter times, is running out.

The solar-powered farms are pumping so hard that they have triggered “a significant drop in groundwater since 2018 … in spite of above average rainfall,” according to an analysis by Leonie Nimmo, a researcher who was until recently at the UK-based Conflict and Environment Observatory. The spread of solar power in Yemen “has become an essential and life-saving source of power,” both to irrigate food crops and provide income from selling khat, he says, but it is also “rapidly exhausting the country’s scarce groundwater reserves.”

In the central Sana’a Basin, Yemen’s agricultural heartland, more than 30 percent of farmers use solar pumps. In a report with Musaed Aklan, a water researcher at the Sana’a Center for Strategic Studies, Lackner predicts a “complete shift” to solar by 2028. But the basin may be down to its last few years of extractable water. Farmers who once found water at depths of 100 feet or less are now pumping from 1,300 feet or more.

Some 1,500 miles to the northeast, in in the desert province of Helmand in Afghanistan, more than 60,000 opium farmers have in the past few years given up on malfunctioning state irrigation canals and switched to tapping underground water using solar water pumps. As a consequence, water tables have been falling typically by 10 feet per year, according to David Mansfield, an expert on the country’s opium industry from the London School of Economics.

An abrupt ban on opium production imposed by Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers in 2022 may offer a partial reprieve. But the wheat that the farmers are growing as a replacement is also a thirsty crop. So, water bankruptcy in Helmand may only be delayed.

“Very little is known about the aquifer [in Helmand], its recharge or when and if it might run dry,” according to Mansfield. But if their pumps run dry, many of the million-plus people in the desert province could be left destitute, as this vital desert resource—the legacy of rainfall in wetter times—disappears for good.
