World’s first modular handheld inkjet printer claims revolutionary print-on-any-surface capabilities — Chinese startup makes big promises but watch out for the price of consumables

If you ever wished you could print on anything, Printisian could be for you. The handheld inkjet printer lets users print on various materials and surfaces, including wood, paper, metals, fabric, leather, stone and even food and skin.

Its modular design allows for easy switching between different accessories, such as an edge positioner, laser aligner, and code scanner, to meet specific printing needs.

The printer has a 5-inch touchscreen, runs on SianOS (powered by Android), has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, and a 300mAh replaceable battery.

Beware ink costs

The device can print text, pictures, date and time, and QR codes or barcodes at 35CM/s. To use it, connect it to your phone via Bluetooth, add a file, and slide the printer across the area you want to print on.

Printisian supports two sizes of ink cartridge and offers variable printing heights and a resolution of 600DPI. It can cover up to 39.3 inches per print, and you can expect “up to” 1,531 yards of print per cartridge.

As is the case with all printers, you need to factor in the cost of the ink. A small color cartridge for the device will currently set you back $59 (usual price is $79), while a large cartridge is $129 (usual price $169). The creators say you can use any compatible ink cartridge from other manufacturers – it’s designed to take standard size cartridges – although they (obviously) recommend their own cartridges as some inks may not print so well on certain surfaces.

As with any crowdsourced projects, you should be aware that backing a product doesn’t mean that it will be completed or that you will receive the item you backed. That said, at the time of writing $65,601 had been pledged, well above the $6,385 goal, so it’s looking positive.

You can pledge for a choice of available rewards, with the basic Printisian Standard coming in at $399, for which you get the printer itself and one small black ink cartridge (0.5 Inch). The price increases significantly if you want to back a version with the various accessories included, but extras can be purchased separately.

Electronic Arts has announced that it will be increasing the cost of its EA Play subscription service next month.

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, beginning on May 10 the EA Play standard tier will increase from $4.99 / £3.99 per month to $5.99 / £5.99, while the annual package will rise from $29.99 / £19.99 to $39.99 / £35.99.

As for the EA Play Pro tier, which offers more in-game rewards, perks, and access to brand-new EA games at launch, it will be increasing from $14.99 / £14.99 to $16.99 / £16.99, while the annual subscription will rise from $119.99 / £109.99 to $99.99 / £89.99.

As previously mentioned, the new price adjustment will come into effect early next month, but subscribers have already been emailed detailing the changes.

However, IGN reports that the changes have already been implemented for new members. In addition, it seems the new membership tiers appear to have been updated already and are currently applied to the EA App, while the pricing for the Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox versions shows the old pricing.

GameIndustry’s report continues, adding that EA is increasing its prices to reflect changes in currency value and “to bring fees in line with market value.”

EA Play first launched in 2014 for the Xbox One before it eventually made its way onto PS4 and PC in 2019 and 2020.

EA isn’t the only publisher to raise its prices. Last year, Microsoft increased the cost of its console version of Xbox Game Pass subscription service, bringing it from $9.99 / £7.99 to $10.99 / £8.99, while Xbox Game Pass Ultimate went from $14.99 / £10.99 per month to $16.99 / £12.99.

This update was followed by a price increase for the Xbox Series X itself in certain regions, jumping from $499 / £449 to $600.84 / £479.99.

Campfire Audio makes some of the best wired headphones in the business (I still can’t decide whether I ultimately prefer the Campfire Audio Solaris Stellar Horizon or the Trifecta; each shines sonically for very different reasons). However, the company’s newest Fathom features a very different driver configuration again, to promise a “detailed presentation with just the right touch of mid-band warmth”.

As we’ve come to expect from Campfire, Fathom headphones are encased in an angular but ergonomic machined aluminum body, anodized this time in a black dip. The highlight here is those little Rainbow PVD fastening halos, which seem to throw subtle rainbows of light against the deep black of the shell.

Looks aside, audiophiles want what’s under the hood and Campfire’s been cooking up a new configuration, namely six (yes, six) custom-made balanced armature drivers. The setup includes dual custom high-definition “super tweeters” for handling the highs; a pair of custom mid-range drivers for vocals and instruments and dual custom BA woofers to hold down those juicy bass frequencies.

All of this engineering doesn’t come cheap, as they’re priced at a very premium $1,049 / £1,049 (which is around AU$2,012).

‘Sound true to the original recording’ is actually a pretty wild idea for Campfire Audio – but it’s a good one

As mentioned above, I adore select Campfire Audio offerings. Aside from the sound quality, I enjoy it when a company moves to the beat of its own drum. Campfire is proudly based in Portland, Oregon (a city known for its friendly, artsy outlook and “Keep Portland Weird” bumper stickers) and CA often seemingly likes to play with its sound signatures to offer a novel recipe. It’s always a talented sound, it’s just… different across its oeuvre, in terms of the fine-tuning of those various driver setups.

The goal of Fathom’s design? “A sound true to the original recording, allowing you to hear your music with clarity and depth.” So, authenticity is the true aim here – not a sonic curve that is novel but appealing, nor a different balance to that which you’re used to in your audiophile listening gear. And I think it’s a wise move. I cannot vouch for the integration of those potentially picky BA drivers yet, but I like the plan.

And it wouldn’t be Campfire Audio if the accessories weren’t on point and here, there’s a folding leather carrying case (hand-made in Portugal, of course) a rainbow PVD carabiner, a total of six ear tips, an earphone cleaning tool and a Campfire Audio lapel pin to enjoy with your music. With Fathom, you also now get two cables – 3.5mm and a balanced 4.4mm termination – in the company’s Time Stream design, featuring eight silver-plated copper conductors in a ribbon configuration.

Campfire Audio Fathom earbuds are available now, but irrespective of how good they may sound, they won’t be heading into any of our “budget” buying guides any time soon. Amazon today has Apple’s fifth generation 64GB Wi-Fi iPad Air for $449.00, down from $599.00. This is a match of the record low price on the tablet, and it’s available in all colors except Starlight, with delivery as soon as this Friday, April 5.

The last time we tracked this deal it was at Best Buy, but right now Amazon is beating Best Buy’s deal on the same tablet by about $50. There are quite a few $100 markdowns on other fifth generation M1 iPad Air models, but none are matching all-time low prices like the 64GB Wi-Fi model.

Like other iPads, the M1 iPad Air is getting up there in age, having launched back in March 2022. Because of the imminent launch of new models, we’re starting to see more consistent discounts on the 2022 tablets, which are still solid options for anyone who doesn’t care about waiting for the new sixth generation devices.
