Don’t be afraid of AI on your next Pixel or Galaxy, it’s not really a big deal yet

[ad_1]

My Dad has a Galaxy S22, and he’s perfectly content, but it’s time for him to upgrade. He’s paid off the phone with Verizon and they owe him a new one. I suggested an iPhone 15, for my own sanity as his tech support, but he’s staying loyal to Samsung, so I offered to help him set up a Galaxy S24. He refused. That phone has AI, he says, and he doesn’t want an AI phone. I get it, but I’m here with news that AI has been greatly exaggerated. There is nothing to worry about when it comes to AI on your phone.

Actually, there is no artificial intelligence (AI) on your phone. I’ll tip my hat to Samsung on this one, they have been calling their new features “advanced intelligence,” and that’s an apt distinction. If you have concern over general AI and what it means to the future of humanity, I can assure you that your concept of AI does not come close to what you’ll find on a smartphone today.

Do you see artificial intelligence in this phone? Nope (Image credit: Google)

Before I get into what AI on a smartphone really is, let’s put away concerns. AI is not going to make decisions for you, not in any way. It won’t make phone calls, or send text messages. It won’t change anything, you still make all the changes.

No Pixel 8? Then Google might not really care about you and your old Pixel

[ad_1]

If you have an older Pixel phone and you’ve been wondering when the newest Pixel features would finally be arriving, I have … news! It might be this week, but probably not. There is no rhyme or reason to Google’s Pixel feature drop, and confusion about features like circle-to-search portends deeper problems. Google made a promise to support its latest Pixel 8 phones for a very long time, and this debacle makes me doubtful that Google will deliver.

This isn’t really about the Pixel Feature Drop, not yet. I have problems with Google’s erratic ‘Feature Drop’ model, but the most important thing Google did for phones this year was its promise to support the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro for seven years from when they launched. That’s unprecedented in the phone world. Apple supports its iPhone models for five years, and it offered the longest support until Google stepped up.

Of course, Apple has been supporting five-year-old phones for more than a decade, while this longevity promise is new for Android makers like Google and Samsung. Apple has a proven track record. Until the Pixel 8 gets its final OS update in 2031 and the Galaxy S24 in 2032, we won’t know if Google and Samsung can truly deliver on the seven year promise, or what that delivery will look like.

If Google is going to beat the best, it needs to be the best

Galaxy S24 Ultra vs iPhone 15 Pro Max vs Pixel 8 Pro (Video)

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

When it comes to choosing a flagship smartphone, the decision can be as varied as the devices themselves. The recent video from Nick Ackerman offers a thorough comparison and speed test among three leading contenders: the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, and the Google Pixel 8 Pro. This article delves into the nuances of each device, providing you with the insight needed to make an informed choice.

Boot-up Speed: A Quick Start

If you value quick access from the moment you press the power button, you’ll be interested to know that the Google Pixel 8 Pro leads the pack with the fastest boot-up time. It edges out the iPhone 15 Pro Max slightly, while the Galaxy S24 Ultra trails as the slowest to spring to life. This initial difference sets the stage for a competitive showdown across various performance metrics.

Smooth Operation: Software Fluidity

All three smartphones offer a seamless interaction with their respective operating systems. Notably, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and the iPhone 15 Pro Max shine in this area, thanks to their high refresh rates and powerful processors that ensure everything from scrolling to switching apps feels effortlessly smooth.

App Launching Speed: The Race to Open

When it comes to launching applications, the battle is evenly matched, with each device showcasing strengths in different areas. The iPhone 15 Pro Max tends to launch games with remarkable speed, a testament to its optimized software and hardware synergy. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and the Google Pixel 8 Pro demonstrate prowess in quickly opening basic applications, making them versatile for everyday tasks.

Gaming Performance: The Play-Off

For gaming aficionados, both the iPhone and Samsung offer compelling experiences, closely matched in their performance, with Samsung slightly outpacing in certain tests. The Pixel 8 Pro, while still a strong contender, doesn’t quite match up due to its less potent chipset, indicating that it may not be the first choice for hardcore gaming.

RAM Management: Keeping Up with Multitasking

In the realm of multitasking, all three devices exhibit excellent RAM management, essential for keeping apps running smoothly in the background. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra slightly outperforms its rivals, showcasing its ability to retain a multitude of apps in memory without a hitch.

Heat Management and Efficiency: Staying Cool Under Pressure

Extended gaming sessions and heavy app usage can generate significant heat, but the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra stands out for its exceptional heat management. This capability ensures that the device maintains optimal performance without significant throttling, making it a solid choice for power users.

Final Verdict: Tailoring to Your Preferences

  • Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: Lauded as a powerhouse, this device excels in performance, camera quality, and features, making no compromises for those seeking the best.
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max: For enthusiasts of iOS, this phone offers unparalleled performance and a fluid user experience, backed by a robust ecosystem.
  • Google Pixel 8 Pro: Highlighted for its superior camera and AI features, along with a comfortable design, it presents great value. However, it may not satisfy those with a penchant for heavy gaming or the most intensive tasks.

Choosing between the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and Pixel 8 Pro ultimately boils down to individual preferences regarding operating systems, performance requirements, and specific features like camera capabilities and AI innovations. Each device brings its strengths to the table, catering to different user needs and preferences. Whether you prioritize software smoothness, gaming prowess, or multitasking efficiency, this comparison provides a foundation to guide your decision, ensuring you select a smartphone that aligns with your lifestyle and tech expectations.

Google Pixel 8 Pro vs Galaxy S23 Ultra cameras compared (Video)

Pixel 8 Pro

Google recently launched its new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones and now we get to find out how the Pixel 8 Pro camera compares to the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The video below from ZONEofTECH gives us a look at the cameras on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and the new Google Pixel 8 Pro, let’s find out how the two cameras compare.

As we can see from the video, When it comes to outdoor photography, the Pixel 8 Pro takes the lead with its superior image processing. Photos appear more natural and balanced, capturing the essence of the scene. On the other hand, the S23 Ultra tends to oversharpen images and raise shadows, which can make the photos look somewhat artificial.

Switching the setting indoors, the S23 Ultra shines. It offers brighter images with more detail, making it ideal for capturing those cozy moments at home or in dimly lit spaces.

Zooming in on subjects reveals another layer of differentiation. The Pixel 8 Pro performs better at lower zoom ranges, maintaining image quality and detail. However, if you’re looking to capture something from a considerable distance, the S23 Ultra excels with its higher zoom capabilities.

For those who love taking portrait shots, the S23 Ultra offers a superior experience. Its edge detection and color preservation are top-notch, ensuring that your subject stands out beautifully against the background.

If ultra-wide shots are your thing, both phones have something to offer. While the Pixel 8 Pro comes with a wider lens, the S23 Ultra counters with brighter and more vibrant images, making each a strong contender in this category.

Both phones offer good video quality, but the S23 Ultra takes it a step further by allowing 8K recording at 30fps—a feature the Pixel 8 Pro lacks. However, Pixel is expected to introduce a video boost feature for enhanced HDR, which could level the playing field.

In low-light conditions, the S23 Ultra offers brighter and sharper images. The Pixel 8 Pro, while struggling with lens flare, does offer more defined textures, giving a different but equally valuable aesthetic to night shots.

Choosing between the Pixel 8 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra ultimately depends on your specific needs. If you’re into general outdoor shots, the Pixel 8 Pro is your go-to. But for features like zoom and portrait mode, the S23 Ultra is hard to beat. Both of these handset are great smartphones and you cannot really go wrong with either device,
