Apple Pencil 2 compatibility: Does it work with 2024 iPad models?

[ad_1]

When Apple unveiled the Apple Pencil Pro during Tuesday’s “Let Loose” event, the company seemingly bid adieu to the second-generation Apple Pencil. An Apple tool reveals that unspecified Apple Pencil 2 compatibility issues mean the older stylus won’t work with 2024 iPad Pro and iPad Air models.

So, if you’re an artist buying a new iPad, or someone who takes lots of handwritten notes, you probably need to budget an extra $129 for a new Apple Pencil Pro.

Apple Pencil 2 compatibility: Stylus doesn’t work with 2024 iPads

According to Apple’s device comparison tool, the new M2 iPad Air and M4 iPad Pro models are only compatible with the new Apple Pencil Pro and the budget Apple Pencil (USB-C). By comparison, previous iPad Pro models (11-inch tablets gen 1 through 4 and 12.9-inch tablets gen 3 through 6) and iPad Air models (gen 4 and 5) are shown as compatible with Apple Pencil (second gen) and the USB-C Apple Pencil.

Ultimately, this means that on top of the hefty price tag for getting a new iPad Pro or Air, you’ll potentially need to drop either $79 or $129, depending on which Apple Pencil model you want to pair with your shiny new tablet.

New features in Apple Pencil Pro

During Tuesday’s event, Apple pointed out the need for a new Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro. And the pro tablet’s slimmest-ever design makes that obvious.

However, the company was less clear about whether owners of current Apple Pencils would need to upgrade if they bought a new iPad. Yes, the Apple Pencil Pro adds new features, including a “squeeze” gesture, haptic feedback and support for Apple’s Find My Network. But for existing iPad owners who don’t use their Apple Pencil 2 much, it would be nice if the older stylus still worked with the new iPad.

The sixth-generation M2 iPad Pro supports the second-generation Apple Pencil as well as the USB-C Apple Pencil. On paper, that tablet should run on the same chip featured in the new iPad Air. If the new iPad Air models truly don’t support the second-gen Apple Pencil, it could be due to a hardware limitation, possibly as a result of a new charging mechanism. (Apple moved the iPad Air’s front-facing camera to the tablet’s long edge so it works in landscape mode. And the Apple Pencil Pro attaches magnetically to the side of compatible tablets for charging.)

Alternatively, Apple could be restricting the functionality to boost Apple Pencil Pro sales. We’ll likely need to wait and see what early reviewers say when the devices launch on May 15.

Either way, for Apple’s most expensive iPad models (the M4 iPad Pro line), unless you already have last year’s USB-C Apple Pencil, you’re going to shell out a few extra bucks to add an Apple Pencil, and even more for the “Pro” pencil experience.

Apple May 2024 iPad Event: iPad Pro, iPad Air, M4, Apple Pencil, Magic Keyboard

[ad_1]

Apple’s iPads have been on the back burner since 2022—there have been plenty of iPhones and Macs since, even a mixed reality headset, but it’s been two years since we’ve seen a new tablet. Now the wait is finally over. During its virtual event today, Apple announced the next-generation iPad Pro and iPad Air, an all-new M4 chip, as well as updated accessories.

Here’s everything Apple announced.

If you buy something using links in our stories, we may earn a commission. This helps support our journalism. Learn more.

All-New M4 Chip

Since 2020, Apple has exclusively launched its M-series processors alongside another Mac. That’s no longer the case as Apple unveiled the all-new M4 chipset debuting inside the new iPad Pro.

The new chip is built on a second-generation three-nanometer process, packing more transistors into a smaller space, enhancing both power efficiency and speed. The CPU has four performance cores and six efficiency cores, which Apple says delivers up to 50 percent faster CPU performance than M2 in the previous iPad Pro. There’s also a 10-core GPU for four times faster performance. As with the M3, it comes with features such as ray tracing, mesh shading, and dynamic caching.

The shift in strategy makes sense, seeing as how Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (which focuses on new software capabilities coming to its entire product line) is next month. In April, Bloomberg reported that iOS 18 will include “a new slate of generative AI features” and that Apple was currently in talks with OpenAI to incorporate some of the company’s features into the next version of the iPhone operating system (this is in addition to reports that Apple is also talking to Google about licensing the Gemini assistant).

During its earnings calls, Apple CEO Tim Cook has been hinting at the company’s incoming AI features as well—both in February and, more recently, earlier this month. Although Apple didn’t get into AI-specific features, it’s seemingly laying the AI groundwork with the new M4.

It’s currently only available with the new iPad Pro, but we can expect Apple to implement the chip in the next-generation Macs.

The last two versions of the iPad Pro haven’t been all that innovative. In 2021, Apple added an M1 chip and a mini-LED display; in 2022, it came with an M2 chip, ProRes video capture, and support for Wi-Fi 6E. The latest iPad Pro, however, packs the largest number of notable upgrades we’ve seen in a while.

Apple Pencil Pro reportedly in the works – but keep the eraser ready on this rumor

[ad_1]

There’s a good chance Apple will unveil a new stylus during its Let Loose event, but recently discovered clues suggest we might see an Apple Pencil Pro. User rsuOvO on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) reportedly found multiple references to the Pro model in the code of the company’s Japanese website.

At the time of this writing, you can still find the name by heading over to the web page, and then pressing the Ctrl and U keys at the same time. Scroll to about 60 percent of the way down and you’ll find the name “Apple Pencil Pro” littered throughout.

The surrounding text is in Japanese. Since we can’t read the language, we ran the wording through Google Translate to get an idea of what it’s saying so take the following with a grain of salt. According to the machine translation, it just describes the accompanying GIF animation in detail. The text talks about how the event logo is drawn with shades of green and white before ending with a glossier version of the Apple icon. No other information about the Pencil Pro, what it might look like, or any of its features could be found.

Apple Pencil Pro name found in code

What’s interesting about the code is it cannot be found on the American, European, or UK versions of Apple’s website. We did find strings of text mentioning the Apple Pencil and a description of the same GIF animation, but nothing on a Pro model of any kind. As far as we know, the name doesn’t appear anywhere else.

Analysis: A possible rebranding

Did Apple just leak ‘Apple Pencil Pro’?

[ad_1]

Apple Pencil Pro leak
The next iPad stylus will apparently be named Apple Pencil Pro.

Add Apple Pencil Pro to the list of products expected at Apple’s May 7 “Let Loose” event. A reference to the stylus turned up on the Japanese version of Apple’s website.

It’s for iPad but might also work with Vision Pro.

Apple Pencil Pro leaks out before official announcement

It’s no secret a new stylus is on the way: Apple showed the product in the invitation to the Let Loose event. But everyone assumed the third-generation version would be called Apple Pencil 3. Apparently not.

To build excitement for the new products, Apple put on its homepage an image and link to the page where Tuesday’s event will be streamed. Someone digging around in the HTLM for the Japanese version turned up a clear reference to “Apple Pencil Pro” on the homepage.

Cult of Mac confirmed that the reference is still there. It’s not on the U.S. site, but it is on the Japanese one.

Not Apple Pencil 3

The name is important because an Apple Pencil Pro won’t necessarily replace the current Apple Pencil 2 in the product lineup. It’s possible the second-generation version will stick around as a lower-cost option — even if it did launch way back in 2018 — with the Pro version becoming the new premium model.

Information leaking out about the upcoming version indicates it’ll be significant step up. The device will supposedly offer haptic feedback, plus a squeeze gesture for quick interactions. The stylus is also expected to support Apple’s Find My network. And it might work with the Vision Pro headset in addition to iPad.

Read our guide on what new features to expect in the upcoming Apple Pencil for more details.

Apple Releases New Firmware for USB-C Apple Pencil

[ad_1]

Apple today released a firmware update for the USB-C Apple Pencil that came out last year. The new firmware has a version number of 10M6060, up from 10M5164. On device, the updated firmware version number will be 37377.37377.16.0.

Apple Pencil USB C sliding cap feature
There is no word on what features, fixes, or updates might be included in the new firmware, and Apple does not offer release notes for ‌Apple Pencil‌ software releases.

The USB-C ‌Apple Pencil‌ is nearly identical in design to the ‌Apple Pencil‌ 2, but it is shorter and has a hidden USB-C port for charging and pairing. It cannot wirelessly charge, and it lacks some of the features available with the more expensive ‌Apple Pencil‌ models such as pressure sensitivity.

Apple does not have an established procedure for updating ‌Apple Pencil‌ hardware, but in the case of the USB-C ‌Apple Pencil‌, connecting it to an iPad with a USB-C cable and powering on the ‌iPad‌ should be enough to spur the update to download.

The second-gen Apple Pencil falls back to $79 ahead of next week’s iPad event

[ad_1]

Apple’s second-generation Pencil stylus is back on sale for $79, which matches its lowest price to date. We’ve seen this deal a few times over the course of 2024, but it’s still about $35 off the device’s usual street price on Amazon outside of those sales. Apple, meanwhile, normally sells the stylus for $129. This offer is available at Amazon, Target, Walmart and Best Buy.

Photo by Valentina Palladino / Engadget

A new model is coming, but this deal matches the lowest price to date for Apple’s best iPad stylus right now.

$79 at Amazon

Do note, though: Apple’s next product showcase is scheduled for May 7, and it is widely expected to unveil a new Pencil during the event. This next-gen model will include some level of haptic feedback, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, while 9to5Mac has suggested it may include a new “squeeze” gesture and Find My tracking support. If you want the newest Pencil possible, you should hold out for one more week.

However, given the MSRP of this second-gen model, it seems safe to expect any new Pencil to cost a good bit more than $79 out of the gate. If you’re on a tighter budget and looking to buy your first iPad stylus for sketching or note-taking, the current Pencil should remain a good value at this price.

For now, the second-gen Pencil is the top stylus pick in our guide to the best iPad accessories. It’s still one of the only styluses to offer pressure sensitivity across iPadOS, so the harder you press down, the heavier your lines get. (Last year’s USB-C-based Pencil omits this.) Tilt recognition and palm rejection support help it feel natural for drawing beyond that. The pen itself is comfortable to hold, and it can charge and connect to a compatible iPad just by snapping to the tablet’s side magnetically, no cables required. We also like its double-tap feature, which makes swapping between a drawing tool and an eraser faster in certain apps. Just make sure you own (and will continue to use) a compatible iPad Air, mini or Pro first.
