The video provides an update on the “state of the iPhone,” with Joswiak and others discussing the device’s past, present, and future. Apple also once again hinted at AI-related announcements later this year, with the company widely expected to announce iOS 18 with new generative AI features at Apple’s developers conference WWDC in June.

The video is worth a watch if you are an iPhone enthusiast, or if you simply want to see Joswiak pretend to get hit by a golf cart.

Apple could give the iPhone 17’s display a big anti-reflective update. A new rumor says that the 2025 iPhone might feature a “super-hard anti-reflective layer,” which is also more scratch-resistant.

Seemingly, Apple will use a new layer of coating on the glass to reduce the reflection and increase scratch resistance.

Corning could be behind iPhone 17’s new cover glass

iPhones currently use Ceramic Shield glass. Apple markets it as “tougher than any smartphone glass” with up to 4x better drop performance. While impressive, Samsung and Corning recently surpassed Apple’s offering with Gorilla Glass Armor.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra features Corning’s Gorilla Glass Armor. It uses a new coating that claims to reduce reflections by up to 75% and has a significant real-world impact. Tests also show that the glass is more scratch-resistant than Gorilla Glass Victus 2. No other Android phone features the new Gorilla Glass Armor panel, but this should change in the next few months.

Based on the leak from Chinese leaker Instant Digital (via MacRumors), Apple plans to use a similar display coating technology on iPhone 17 in 2025. Since the company’s supply chain partners have recently received the coating equipment, the enhanced cover glass will debut on the iPhone 17 and not on the iPhone 16.

Apple has heavily invested in Corning since 2019

Apple has close ties with Corning and invested $250 million into the company in 2019. This was followed by another $45 million in funding in 2021 to expand its manufacturing and help with research and development.

Every new iPhone ships with a brighter OLED panel. A superior cover glass with better anti-reflective properties will help you enjoy the brighter panel in all its glory. The improved scratch resistance should help reduce micro scratches, a welcome improvement if you prefer not to apply a screen protector to your iPhone’s screen.

However, the leaker says the new anti-reflective coating negatively affects the oleophobic coating. It reduces its effectiveness, leading the display to show finger oil after a year of use. Apple could use a stronger oleophobic coating on the iPhone 17 to circumvent this issue.

The iPhone 16 line is sure to be more powerful than the iPhone 15 series, but these upcoming phones might also look more premium, thanks to greatly reduced bezels.

According to South Korean site SisaJournal (via Phone Arena), Apple plans to use BRS (Border Reduction Structure) technology on all four upcoming phones – namely the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16 Plus, the iPhone 16 Pro, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

This BRS technology apparently allows for ultra-thin bezels, with the bottom bezel particularly benefitting. This is notable because the bottom bezel is supposedly the one that’s the most difficult to shrink, due to heat generation, but this BRS technology reportedly solves that problem.

So the end result is that all four iPhone 16 models might have much smaller bezels than their predecessors.

Not just for the Pros

While we’d take this with a pinch of salt, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard talk of smaller bezels, though previously it was reported that only the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max would have smaller bezels.

That report also suggested that the shrinking of the bezels would mean these phones aren’t much bigger than their predecessors, despite supposedly having larger screens.

That’s interesting because the standard iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus aren’t rumored to have larger screens, so if they also have reduced bezels then these two phones might be physically smaller than their predecessors.

That’s speculation for now, and it’s entirely possible anyway that either these leaks are wrong or that only the Pro models will have smaller bezels. But with two sources now pointing to a bezel reduction it’s likely that at least some phones in the iPhone 16 line will have smaller bezels.

We should find out in September, as that’s when we’re expecting all four iPhone 16 models to launch. But we’ll be sure to update you with any additional leaks – bezel related or otherwise – in the meantime.

Apple plans to maximize the display size on the upcoming iPhone 16 series by using a new ultra-thin bezel technology, claims a new report out of Korea.

iPhone 16 Pro Sizes Feature
According to SisaJournal, Apple will use Border Reduction Structure (BRS) technology to minimize the bezel at the bottom of the display. BRS achieves this by rolling up the internal copper wiring into a more compact package.

Apple reportedly plans to apply the borderless display technology to all four iPhone 16 models, which are due to be released in the second half of this year.

The company is said to have attempted to apply the technology to iPhones before, but previous attempts were curtailed due to heat issues. Apple’s reinvigorated efforts to adopt BRS are reportedly due to recent improvements in heat dissipation technology.

Last year, Apple reduced the bezels on iPhone 15 Pro models using low-injection pressure over-molding, or LIPO, to shrink the display border size to 1.5 millimeters (versus around 2.2 millimeters on iPhone 14 models).

Besides that, Apple has not significantly tweaked iPhone screen sizes since the introduction of the ‌‌iPhone‌‌ 12 models in 2020. However, that’s set to change with the 2024 iPhone 16 lineup. The iPhone 16 Pro models will have notably larger display sizes than the current iPhone 15 Pro models.

According to multiple sources, the ‌‌iPhone 16 Pro‌‌ and ‌‌iPhone 16 Pro‌‌ Max will feature an increase in display size compared to the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and ‌‌iPhone 15 Pro‌‌ Max, measuring roughly 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively. To be more precise, the ‌‌iPhone 16 Pro‌‌ will have a 6.27-inch display (159.31 mm), while the ‌‌iPhone 16 Pro‌‌ Max will feature a 6.85-inch (174.06 mm) screen.

With the increase in display size, the dimensions of the ‌iPhone‌’s body will also increase. The ‌‌iPhone 16 Pro‌‌ and 16 Pro Max will be slightly taller than their predecessors, while also being somewhat wider. The larger form factor of the devices will give Apple more internal space for components. The ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models could get larger, longer-lasting batteries for example.

We are not expecting size changes for the ‌iPhone 16‌ and ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus, and these devices will be the same size as the iPhone 15 and ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus. However, with the ‌‌iPhone‌‌ 17 and ‌‌iPhone‌‌ 17 Plus in 2025, Apple is expected to also bring the larger 6.27- and 6.86-inch display sizes to its two standard ‌‌iPhone‌‌ models.

Mobile gaming peripheral manufacturer Backbone has announced two new mobile controllers: the Backbone One – Lightning (2nd Gen) and the Backbone One PlayStation Edition – Lightning (2nd Gen).

Intended to supersede the existing Lightning versions of the original Backbone One and Backbone One PlayStation Edition, the two controllers boast all the enhancements of the recent second generation Backbone One revision but with a Lightning connector instead of USB-C.

This means that owners of older iPhones can finally take advantage of the improved D-pad and buttons found on the second generation Backbone One, not to mention the set of included magnetic adapters that enhance the fit on larger devices or when using a phone case.

Cable ties

We awarded the original Lightning model a glowing five out of five stars in our Backbone One iOS controller review, praising its excellent ergonomics and compatibility with native mobile games and streaming platforms such as Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. One of our few complaints was the lack of any accommodation for the added bulk of phone cases, which is an issue solved by this second generation version.

If you’re out of the loop, Apple moved away from its proprietary Lightning connector with the launch of the iPhone 15 series back in September 2023 in order to comply with European Union legislation. It adopted the more widespread USB-C standard instead, but this meant that many older accessories that used the Lightning connector were no longer compatible with the most recent models.

As it seems like all future iPhone devices are going to use USB-C, releasing a new peripheral with a Lightning connector in 2024 is definitely a little unexpected. Even so, it’s easy to imagine that there are still plenty of mobile gamers relying on these older Apple devices. I’m still clinging on to my iPhone 13 mini, for example, and don’t have any real plans to upgrade soon even with the release of Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile later this week.

Next year’s iPhone 17 will feature an anti-reflective display that is more scratch-resistant than Apple’s Ceramic Shield found on iPhone 15 models, according to a new rumor out of Asia.

Chinese Weibo leaker Instant Digital claimed on Tuesday that the outer glass on the iPhone 17 is set to have a “super-hard anti-reflective layer” that is “more scratch-resistant than you think.” The coating equipment has just been handed over to China’s supply chain, according to the leaker, but not in time for it to feature in this year’s upcoming iPhone 16 series.

“Ceramic Shield” is a marketing name for a glass-ceramic material developed by Corning in collaboration with Apple. Apple says the Ceramic Shield on the iPhone 15 is “tougher than any smartphone glass.” Introduced on iPhone 12 models in 2020, Apple advertised the ceramic-infused glass as increasing drop performance by 4x compared to the iPhone 11.

More recently, Samsung debuted its newest Galaxy S24 Ultra, which features a Gorilla Glass Armor display panel, also developed by Corning. According to Corning, the Armor panel cuts reflections by 75 percent compared to a typical glass surface, and is resistant to micro scratches that build up over time on competing glass panels. Corning also claims the panels offer over 4x more scratch resistance than competitive aluminosilicate cover glasses.

It’s not clear whether Apple is planning to adopt Gorilla Glass Armor for the iPhone 17, but the description matches the Chinese leaker’s claims. Corning could also be supplying Apple with an equivalent technology that will be branded under another name.

Corning has been a longtime Apple supplier, with Gorilla Glass used in devices across Apple’s product lineup. In 2021, Apple said it had invested a combined $495 million to support Corning’s ongoing research and development into “state-of-the-art glass processes,” which led to the creation of Ceramic Shield.

Last month, we exclusively reported that Samsung will hold its next Galaxy Unpacked event in July 2024. At this event, the company will launch its next-generation foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Some reports claim that Samsung will also launch a cheaper version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6, but its launch could be delayed by a few months.

Cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 6 launch could happen in September or October 2024

According to a new report from The Elec (via @Tech_Reve), Samsung will start the production of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 two to three weeks earlier than usual. So, the launch of those two upcoming foldable phones will likely happen two to three weeks earlier. This report lines up with our earlier report about an early launch. So, the launch of the cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 6 will happen around the launch of the iPhone 16 series.

The mass production of Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 components will reportedly begin in early May 2024. Last year, Samsung ordered the mass production of Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 components in late May 2023. Samsung has reportedly set a sales target of 200,000 to 300,000 units for the cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 6. While the shipment numbers aren’t high, it will divert consumer attention from the iPhone 16.

Cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 6 will lack S Pen and could be thinner than standard version

The report claims that the costlier version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will have a built-in S Pen slot, but the cheaper one doesn’t. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is said to be thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 5, and the cheaper version will be even thinner.

Another report claimed that the affordable version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be priced at just $800, which makes it an enticing product. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 6 could have better cameras, a brighter screen, a faster Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, and a slightly bigger battery.

The combined sales target of Samsung’s upcoming foldable phones is around 10 million. The estimated sales figure for the Galaxy S24 series is around 35 million. So, the total sales of Samsung’s high-end phones could be around 40-45 million units, an improvement over last year.

Author’s Note: Samsung could launch the Galaxy Z Fold 6 FE with an $800 price tag. It could have a weaker processor, a dimmer screen, and a smaller battery than the regular Galaxy Z Fold 6. Since a $1,800 foldable phone is too much for most people, a $800 foldable phone with a big screen could attract a lot of people, and some people might consider buying their first foldable phone. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Galaxy Z Fold 5-like specifications for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 FE.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will most likely have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, more RAM, improved cameras, and a bigger battery.

Google Wallet looks set to become much more useful by supporting Apple Wallet files, it’ll finally be able to open and use tickets and passes created/saved in Apple’s proprietary .pkpass file format.

Android tipster Mishaal Rahman reported that the feature has been rolling out to some of his followers with several replies confirming they have access right now. However, the feature doesn’t seem to be available to everyone yet, which could mean the rollout is limited to certain regions.

In the past, some tickets and passes have only included an Apple Wallet link, which will only work with iPhones, leaving Android users out in the cold.

The improved compatibility would save Google Wallet users from needing to go through the difficulty of finding trustworthy third-party apps to convert the Apple passes. It could also prevent users from completely giving up on using digital passes altogether and having to dig through emails to find ticket confirmation or go back to the hassle of printing paper tickets.

The post features a recording from a user credited as Cob that shows the process of adding a work ID .pkpass file to Google Wallet. Using a file manager app the user opens the .pkpass file and is presented with several app options to use to open the file.

After selecting Google Wallet the user is prompted for permission with a screen explaining that Google may keep a record of passes for reference, while a continue button appears at the bottom of the screen.

Once the user proceeds, another permission request about Google’s use of data appears. After this is agreed to, the pass is added to the digital wallet and we can see a QR code and that all the data has been copied over correctly including job titles, staff number contact details, and an expiry date.

Digital Wallets have become a more integral part of our lives due to our move away from physical currency and how ubiquitous phones, smartwatches, and NFC payments have become. However, due to the popularity of Apple’s iPhone Apple Wallet seems to be slightly widely accepted with Google catching up.

This is the second recent big change to Google Wallet, which is replacing the previous app Google Pay that’s due to be discontinued on June 4, 2024 in the U.S. It appears Google is streamlining its payment apps which could allow it to better compete with Apple.

Both Google and Apple Wallet apps have advantages and disadvantages but are considered the best payment apps with Google Pay being released back in 2011, which later became Google Wallet. And Apple Passbook was announced in 2012 and became Apple Wallet.

iOS 17.4.1 and iPadOS 17.4.1 should be released within the next few days, with a build number of 21E235, according to a source with a proven track record.

MacRumors previously reported that Apple was internally testing iOS 17.4.1. As a minor update for the iPhone, it will likely address software bugs and/or security vulnerabilities. It is unclear if the update will include any other changes.

As to be expected, Apple has also been internally testing iOS 17.5, and the first beta of that update is likely to be released this week.

We consider it likely that there will also be a macOS 14.4.1 update for the Mac at some point, as there have been complaints about several bugs on macOS 14.4 related to USB hubs, Java, Bluetooth, printers, audio plugins, and more.
