Apple saw its revenue drop 4% year over year in the first quarter. The only real bright spot is that revenue and earnings dropped less than analysts had expected.

As a result, shares of AAPL are up over 6% in after-hours trading.

Apple Q1 2024 financial results were fairly dismal

Apple is undeniably going through a rough patch. Revenue dropped in four of its last five quarters — the holiday quarter of 2023 was the sole exception.

But at least the company did better in the most recent January-through-March period than analysts had predicted. They thought Apple’s Q1 quarterly results would include total revenue of $90.36 billion, down 5% from $94.84 billion in the same quarter of 2023. But instead, the iPhone maker brought in $90.8 billion.

Analysts also thought earnings per share would be $1.50 and net income would be $23.26 billion. Instead, they are $1.53 and $23.64 billion, respectively.

The differences may seem small, but they are enough to set off a rally in Apple stock. It closed up 2.2% on Thursday and is current up another 6.3% in after-hours trading. It’s yet another an example of the curious logic of Wall Street.

Apple executives always stay optimistic about financial results.

“Thanks to very high levels of customer satisfaction and loyalty, our active installed base of devices has reached a new all-time high across all products and all geographic segments, and our business performance drove a new EPS record for the March quarter,” said Luca Maestri, Apple’s Chief Financial Officer.

Apple CEO Tim Cook and Maestri will hold a conference call with investors on Thursday. This will offer more details on these financial results, but expect analysts on the call to ask questions about Apple’s AI plans. Cook may drop hints about what to expect at WWDC24 in June.

Best Buy today has discounted Apple’s M1 iPad Air (64GB Wi-Fi) to a new all-time low price of $399.99 in the Starlight color option, down from $599.99. Best Buy says this deal will last through the end of the day, and it’s only available in one color at this record low price.

This is $50 cheaper than the previous all-time low price on the M1 iPad Air. Prices on the 2022 tablet continue to get discounted as we get closer to next week’s Apple event, which is expected to include the announcement of an updated iPad Air lineup.

Over the past couple of years, Sony has been using Samsung Display’s QD-OLED panels in its flagship TV models. However, that isn’t the case this year, and Sony has switched to a Mini LED panel for its flagship TV mode for 2024. While it still uses LG’s WRGB OLED panel in this year’s model, it isn’t pegged as the Japanese firm’s top-of-the-line TV.

Sony’s flagship TV for 2024 uses Mini LED panel instead of a Samsung QD-OLED

Sony’s new TV lineup for 2024 includes just four TV models: BRAVIA 3, BRAVIA 7, BRAVIA 8, and BRAVIA 9. These model names are much simpler to remember and understand than Sony’s previous naming scheme. The BRAVIA 3 is a regular LED-backlit (Direct LIT) LCD TV with no full array local dimming. The step-up is BRAVIA 7, which is a Mini LED TV, and it will be available in 55-inch, 65-inch, 75-inch, and 85-inch sizes.

The next step up is the BRAVIA 8, which comes in 55-inch, 65-inch, and 75-inch sizes and uses LG Display’s WRGB OLED panel. Compared to its predecessor (last year’s A80L), it has thinner bezels, and that’s about it. The BRAVIA 9 is Sony’s top-of-the-line TV for 2024, and it uses a higher-end Mini LED panel with a lot more local dimming zones, higher brightness, and better colors. It comes in 65-inch ($3,299), 75-inch ($3,999), and 85-inch ($5,499) sizes.

You can watch our hands-on video of Samsung’s QD-OLED TV lineup for 2024 below. It will compete with Sony’s BRAVIA 8 and BRAVIA 9 TVs this year.

Sony will continue selling last year’s A95L, which uses Samsung Display’s QD-OLED panel, but it isn’t clear if its stocks will last the entire year. So, if you want to get the Sony A95L, you should consider buying it sooner rather than later. As an alternative, you can buy Samsung’s S95C or the new S95D QD-OLED TV. The S95C is a lot cheaper than Sony’s A95L, while the S95D is cheaper and has a Glare-Free coating to prevent reflections.

The Japanese firm also launched two new soundbars, a five-speaker home theater unit, and a neckband “portable theater” called BRAVIA Theater U. Sony is using the term BRAVIA for its home theater and soundbar names for the first time. Its new soundbars have copied a few features from Samsung’s soundbars, including Active Voice Amplifier, SpaceFit Sound, and Q-Symphony.

If you’re a Prime member and you’re signed in, you’ll see that the controller is sold by 8BitDo directly. Otherwise, you’ll see the peripheral for the same price, but a third-party seller is flogging it instead.

Along with other devices, the Ultimate Controller is compatible with Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck over Bluetooth or a 2.4g adapter. To connect wirelessly to a Windows PC, you’ll need to use the adapter.

You can use a PC or mobile app to customize the sensitivity of the joysticks, triggers and vibrations, as well as to remap the buttons, add macros and create settings profiles that are saved to the controller. Other features include Hall effect sensing joysticks that will likely be more resistant to wear and drift than many other joysticks, a pair of back paddle buttons and motion controls.

While 8BitDo says that you’ll get up to 22 hours of use out of a single charge, having a dedicated dock to plunk the Ultimate Controller into is handy. In a neat touch, the controller automatically turns off or on when you dock or undock it, respectively.

Overall, the Ultimate Controller is a great, flexible gamepad (for one thing, it’s one of the few third-party controllers that can wake a Switch from sleep mode). After six months of using the peripheral, Engadget Senior Commerce Writer Jeff Dunn a “comfortable and versatile pro-style pad that should stay alive over the long haul” and “my endgame controller for both Switch and PC.”

Apple refreshed the 24-inch iMac with its latest M3 chip in October 2023. This was the first update to the machine since its transition to Apple silicon with the M1 SoC in April 2021.

The new chip brings a significant performance bump, with Apple claiming a 30% speed boost in Safari and Microsoft Excel. In Photoshop and Final Cut Pro, you will see a claimed “up to 2x faster” performance. And in games, thanks to the new GPU that supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, Apple claims “up to 50% faster frame rates.”

Save $149 on the M3 iMac

Despite shipping with a faster M3 chip, the 24-inch iMac starts at the same $1,299 as its predecessor. This model features an 8-core CPU, 8-core, 256GB storage, and 8GB system memory.

Amazon’s deal makes the machine more affordable by slashing $149 off its price. The listing page only shows a $100 discount, with an additional $49 available through a coupon.

You can get the 256GB configuration with a more powerful 10-core GPU with a similar $149 discount. This drops its price from $1,499 to $1,349. The 512GB configuration of the machine is also available for $149 off, albeit in limited color options.

This is an all-time low price for the M3 iMac. So, if you have been holding off on buying one, this is the deal that you should jump on.

If you’re anything like me, then you put off buying a new MacBook until absolutely necessary or there’s a big sale to avoid a large bill. Right now, the latter is making a purchase more tempting, with Apple’s 2022 MacBook Air with M2 chip on sale for $849 from $999. The 15 percent sale brings the 13.6-inch 256GB device down to a record-low price.

We gave the 2022 MacBook Air a 96 in our review when Apple first released it, dubbing the device “near-perfect.” The MacBook is thinner than its predecessor, but the screen is a noticeable one-third of an inch larger — with a liquid retina display and up to 500 nits of brightness. Other perks include a 1080p FaceTime camera and a 60Hz refresh rate. We were also big fans of the 2022 MacBook Air’s high-quality quad-speaker array and solid three-mic system. It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack, 2 USB-C thunderbolt ports and a MagSafe connector.

Our pick for 2024’s best budget MacBook is currently $200 cheaper than the latest M3 chip MacBook Air but has similar stats. Apple Card Savings accounts just got their first interest rate decrease. Money stored in on these accounts now earns 4.4% in annual interest.

Previously, Apple and Goldman Sachs had boosted in the rate multiple times since the beginning of December. And it’s still quite high, even after the drop.

Apple Card Savings accounts now pay 4.4% in interest annually

Starting in spring 2023, money earned from Apple Card’s cash-back program can automatically go into a high-yield savings account. Plus, users of Apple’s credit card can easily transfer cash from other accounts that pay a lower interest rate.

And there are plenty of accounts with lower rates. A Wells Fargo one pays 0.15% to 0.25%, for example, and Bank of America pays 0.01% to 0.04%. But an Apple account pays much more: 4.4%.

The current rate is a drop from the 4.5% interest rate that went into place in late January. The change is likely about the expectation that the Federal Reserve will drop the federal funds rate later this year. It’s currently 5.25% to 5.50%, but that could change in June. A drop in the federal funds rate generally means banks lower savings accounts’ interest rates.

But the Apple Card Savings interest rate increased rapidly in recent months. As noted, it went up to 4.5% in late January. That that was a bump up from the previous rate of 4.35% from early January. In December 2023 it jumped to 4.25% — before that, it was 4.15%.

These are the Annual Percentage Yields, of course. And interest is compounded daily. So now $100 in an account earns $4.40 a year. Or put $10,000 away and earn $440 each year. The money is divided up monthly, of course.

With U.S. inflation down to 2.5%, the dollars stored in an Apple Card Savings account are genuinely increasing in value. Plus, there are no fees.

These benefits make an account a much better option than stuffing the cash under a mattress. Or even putting it in a low-yield account from another bank.
