Review: From Computers To Cassette Decks, ‘Machine Music Delivered Five Unique Audio Adventures

Bold experimental music hosts Project [BLANK] kicked off their fifth season on Saturday at Bread and Salt with a Machine Music set that promised – and delivered – a "night of electronic sound."

Genres of electronic music ranged from computer software to modular synthesizers with wires and buttons.

The concert was opened by Michelle Liu, a composer from the University of California at San Diego, sitting at her laptop. Pulses of bright white noise accompanied the video image with jittery white bits dancing around a rectangular area, with occasional bursts of noise. The throbbing noise turned into chirps and grunts, and then into deep rumblings and modulated sounds. The music was continuous for most of the performance, but as the expected white bars faded, the music became sparse and eventually fell silent.

If anyone deserves the moniker "Music Machine" for his performance, it's Joe Cantrell and his low-quality assortment of forgotten cassettes, turntables, effects and other electronic equipment.

Cantrell slowly entered driver's licenses and other magnetic cards into the Tutorette, playing with them like an engineer returning a tape through a magnetic head to produce spongy electronic sound. After doing this a few times, Tutorette sampled and looped the sound.

His set opened with sounds reminiscent of a jukebox at low volume. Within 25 minutes, these quiet, introspective sounds evolved into asymmetrical grooves, with sparkling electronic basses, tinkling jungle loops and enigmatic speech from cassettes and recordings.

Heide Jiménez played small bells and a chain of goat hooves on his laptop, along with other vocal elements. The resulting electronic texture is uneven, sometimes with distorted pre-recorded vocals.

What do random votes mean? Is the message trying to be heard but failing? Text without understanding? Is this a cheap way to create a puzzle about something that doesn't make sense? Without a verbal introduction or program notes, this could only be guessed at.

Jimenez's band was unique in its discontinuity and courage to abandon old ideas and venture into new sonic territory.

Michael Trejillo's Vatican IV Companion has been described as remixes of two of his string quartets. Play a custom built modular mixing and matching machine. Long notes with cut melodic features slowly became rhythmic, merging into a groove. Many electronic circuits have input and output timing. The most calm and concentrated work was in the evening.

The Xareni Lizarraga notebook set focused on field recordings with a sage olfactory component and live samples of what appeared to be the same clog chain that Jimenez had used previously. Interspersed with frogs and birds, fast-sounding, seemingly random Spanish electronic bells.

The five composers/performers took my ear to new places of interest, and there was enough musical variety between them to avoid monotony. Future concerts at Project [BLANK's Salty Series] promise even more exciting adventures, and admission is $10 USD.

Elon Musk’s Neuralink Wants People To Control Computers With Their Minds. How Close Are They?

Musk says this last goal is one step closer to achieving it.

Neuralink, founded by Musk in 2016, plans to implant devices in the human brain that would allow people with neurological disorders to control computers or robotic limbs with their minds. Musk noted that he also wants to "achieve a kind of symbiosis with artificial intelligence" and possibly enable remote communication with the device.

What is Neuralink used for?

The company's website states that the Neuralink Brain-Computer Interface, or BCI, will allow people to wirelessly control a computer or mobile device "just by thinking about it."

The technology is primarily aimed at people with paralysis and other neurological disorders, although Neuralink wants to eventually launch a product with non-medical uses.

Is Neuralink FDA approved?

Neuralink still needs approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to get its technology into humans, but Musk says he expects approval in the near future.

The company has submitted most of the required documents to the FDA, the billionaire said during a show and tell event on Wednesday.

"We believe that in about six months we will be able to get our first Neuralink in a human," Musk said, adding that he eventually considered implanting himself.

However, Musk and the company have made bad predictions in the past.

In 2019, executives said they planned to begin human clinical trials in 2020. In April, Musk announced that the company is on track to launch by the end of 2022.

What does Nelink do?

Neuralink's plan is for a surgical robot to implant the device in the areas of the brain that control movement. The device would then process and transmit the neural signals and allow the user to control the keyboard and mouse with their thoughts.

Neuralink's website says it aims to create a "safe, fully implantable and aesthetically invisible" system.

Elon Musk is the owner of Neuralink.

Eight founding members, including Musk, launched Neuralink in 2016. All but Musk and another co-founder have left, Reuters reports.

Musk also runs Twitter, Tesla, SpaceX and The Boring Company.

Earlier this year, the nonprofit Committee for Responsible Medicine for Animal Rights filed a lawsuit against UC Davis over brain experiments conducted on 23 monkeys for Neuralink.

The complaint accuses the university of not providing proper veterinary care to the dying monkeys.

According to the Neuralink website, he killed eight animals. Two were withdrawn immediately due to Important histologic findings, one due to device failure, four due to suspected device-related infections, and one due to a surgical complication with BioGlue.

Neuralink said that in response, it developed new surgical protocols for future surgeries.

"We are absolutely committed to working with animals in the most humane and ethical way possible," Neuralink said in a blog post. "While the facilities and care at UC Davis met and continue to meet federal standards, we definitely wanted to improve those standards when we moved the animals into our own facilities."

U.S. Dept Of Energy Breakthrough: Detecting Dark Matter With Quantum Computers

Dark matter makes up 27% of the balance of matter and energy in the universe, but scientists know very little about it. They know it’s cold, which means the particles that make up dark matter move slowly. Dark matter is difficult to detect directly because it does not interact with light. However, scientists at the US Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) have found a way to search for dark matter using quantum computers.

Aaron Zhao, chief scientist at Fermilab, is trying to detect dark matter using quantum science. As part of the US Department of Energy’s QuantISED High Energy Physics Program, he developed a method to detect single photons produced by dark matter in the presence of a strong magnetic field, using qubits, a critical component of quantum computing systems.

 

How quantum computers detect dark matter

A classical computer organizes data into binary bits of 1 or 0. A specific set of 1s and 0s allows the computer to perform certain tasks and functions. However, in quantum computing, qubits exist in ones and zeros until they are simultaneously read out, thanks to a property of quantum mechanics known as superposition. This feature allows quantum computers to efficiently perform complex calculations that would take a classical computer a long time to complete.

“Qubits work using single pulses of information, like single photons,” Zhou said. “So if you’re working with small energy packages like single catalysts, they’re vulnerable to external perturbations.”

For qubits to function at these quantum levels, they must be in a carefully controlled environment that is protected from outside interference and maintains a constant low temperature. Even a small perturbation can cause a program on a quantum computer to malfunction. Because of their high sensitivity, Zhou realized that quantum computers could provide a way to detect dark matter. Other dark matter detectors, such as quantum computers, must be protected; It reinforced the idea.

“Both quantum computers and dark matter detectors need high protection, and the only thing that will get through is dark matter,” Zhou said. So if people are building quantum computers with the same requirements, “why can’t you use them as dark matter detectors?” we asked ourselves.

Mistakes are welcome

When dark matter passes through a strong magnetic field, Zhou and his team can produce photons that can be measured in tiny qubits inside aluminum photon holes. Since qubits are shielded from all other external disturbances, when scientists detect photon perturbations, they conclude that it is the result of dark matter passing through the shielding layers.

“These intrusions manifest as errors where no data is loaded into the computer, but somehow the data is leaked, for example, the zeros of the volatile particles in the machine are changed,” he said.

 

So far, Chu and his team have shown how this mechanism works and how the device is incredibly sensitive to these photons. Their method has advantages over other sensors, such as the ability to take multiple measurements of the same photo to ensure that the disturbance is not another random cause. The device has a very low noise level, which makes it more sensitive to dark matter signals.

Even a small perturbation can cause a program on a quantum computer to malfunction. With its high sensitivity, Aaron Chu realized that quantum computers could provide a way to detect dark matter.

“We know from the high-energy physics community how to make these special qubits, and we’ve worked with people in quantum computing to understand and transfer the technology to use these qubits as sensors,” Zhou said.

From there, they plan to try to detect dark matter and improve the device’s design.

 

Use sapphire apertures to pick up black objects

“This device tests a sensor in a box that captures photons at a certain frequency,” Zhou said. “The next step is to modify this box to use the box as a resizable radio receiver.”

By changing the size of the photon cavity, it can determine the wavelength of the photon produced by dark matter.

“The waves that can be detected in the box are determined by the overall size of the box. To change the frequencies and wavelengths of the dark matter we want to find, we need to change the size of the box,” Zhou said.

 

Researchers are designing cavities made of different materials. Traditional aluminum photons lose their high properties in the magnetic field required to produce dark matter photons.

“These voids cannot exist in a strong magnetic field. “Strong magnetic fields destroy superconductivity, so we developed a new synthetic sapphire resonator.”

Building these new tunable optical slits in sapphire brings the team one step closer to performing dark matter experiments that combine aspects of physics and quantum science.

Microsoft’s recently released iCloud app for Windows, which aims to connect iCloud to the Photos app on your computer, has a bug that could send photos to the wrong users.

Many users have reported on the MacRumors forums that when they tried to upload their iCloud data to a Windows device, they were receiving someone else’s photos and sending their own photos as well. Some users have reported experiencing a black screen with only scan lines playing videos. After Microsoft unveiled the feature last Wednesday, users began sharing concerns with the app on November 17.

Images have been sent to someone else. The user added that he tested the bug on multiple Apple devices, including the iPad, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max, and the main culprit appears to be his iPhone 14 Pro Max, which is HDR and HEVC enabled. . The researchers conducted a multi-method study in which they recorded videos of children playing in a preschool. They looked at children's play habits and what children did when playing with tablets versus physical toys such as blocks and clothes. When playing on a tablet, the focus is on what kids are doing on screen and with their peers. Children's play was compared following a study that adjusted the established classification framework for children's play.

The study found that tablet games were more exploratory but contained fewer simulation and fantasy elements. The nature of the game on a tablet is also different from the games usually played by children of this age.

The kindergarten curriculum, known in Sweden as Lpfö 2018, states in its guidelines for parenting, development and learning that preschool educators are responsible for ensuring that all children are able to use digital devices in a way that encourages learning, development and learning.
