LONDON (Reuters) – Britons spend big on energy-efficient appliances during the Christmas shopping season, but shun computers and TVs as they face a cost-of-living crunch, electronics retailer Karis said Wednesday.

Currys last month reported a significant first-half loss and slashed its 2022-23 profit forecast, blaming a slowdown in a northern market that has faced price cuts from rivals.

On Wednesday, Karis pointed to a further decline in trade in the Nordic countries.

Profits at the UK and Ireland businesses were better than expected due to higher gross margins and cost savings, he said.

But international profit was below forecast, reflecting a 10 percent drop in sales at its Nordic business and continued pressure on gross margins.

The group said it still expects adjusted pre-tax profits of 100-125 million pounds ($123-154 million) for 2022-2023, up from 186 million pounds in 2021-22.

Emissions modeling

Researchers have created a framework to study emissions from computers running on board a global fleet of fully autonomous electric vehicles, meaning they don't need a backup human driver.

The model depends on the number of vehicles in the global fleet, the power of each computer in each vehicle, the operating hours of each vehicle, and the carbon intensity of the electricity that powers each computer.

On its own, this sounds like a deceptively simple equation. But there's a lot of uncertainty in each of these variables because we're looking at a new application that doesn't exist yet,” says Sudhakar.

For example, some studies suggest that time spent driving autonomous vehicles may increase as people are able to multitask while driving and people young and old are able to drive more. But other research suggests that time spent driving may be reduced as algorithms can find optimal routes that get people to their destinations faster.

In addition to accounting for these uncertainties, the researchers had to model modern computer hardware and software that did not yet exist.

To do this, they modeled the workload of a popular algorithm for autonomous cars, known as a multi-site deep neural network, because it can handle multiple tasks simultaneously. They investigated how much power this deep neural network would consume if it were to simultaneously process multiple high-resolution inputs from multiple high-frame-rate cameras.

When he used probabilistic models to explore different scenarios, Sudhakar was surprised at how quickly the algorithms' workload increased.

For example, if an autonomous car has 10 deep neural networks processing images from 10 cameras and the car drives for one hour a day, it will produce 21.6 million results every day. Autonomous vehicles will be used to transport goods and people, he said, so vast amounts of computing power can be distributed through global supply chains. And his model only takes into account the calculations, it does not take into account the energy consumed by the car's sensors or the waste generated during production.

The researchers found that each self-driving car would need to consume less than 1.2 kilowatts of power for the calculations to prevent emissions from spiraling out of control. To make this possible, computer hardware had to become more efficient at a faster rate, doubling in efficiency every 1.1 years.

One way to increase this efficiency would be to use more specialized hardware designed to run specific driving algorithms. Sudhakar says that because researchers know the navigation and perception tasks required for autonomous driving, it may be easier to develop specialized equipment for these tasks. But vehicles typically have a lifespan of 10 or 20 years, so one of the challenges in designing specific hardware will be testing it so it can run future algorithms.

In the future, researchers can make algorithms more efficient so that they require less processing power. However, this is also difficult because giving up some precision in favor of greater efficiency can reduce the safety of the vehicle.

Now that they have demonstrated this structure, the researchers want to continue studying the efficiency of the hardware and improvements in the algorithms. Furthermore, they say their model could be improved by characterizing carbon emissions from the car's manufacturing process and emissions from car sensors – the carbon embodied in self-driving cars.

While many scenarios remain to be explored, the researchers hope this work sheds light on a potential problem that people may not have thought of.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A former Cleveland Public Power employee is serving the next two years on federal probation for attempting to extract sensitive data from computers monitoring the city's power grid.

John Pelton, 55, faces up to six months in prison in a hearing Thursday, nearly four months after he pleaded guilty to attempting to break into a secured computer and lying to the FBI.

U.S. District Judge David Ruiz also ordered Pelton to pay a $5,000 fine.

During the hearing, Pelton said he regretted handling the situation, including lying to federal agents. He said he installed keyloggers that record all keystrokes containing sensitive information, including usernames and passwords, on a computer that monitors the city's power grid to restore power to customers faster and more securely.

"My intentions were good," Pelton said. "I didn't answer [the FBI agents] honestly because I was scared. I wish I hadn't done those things."

If a power outage occurs, Pelton says, it forces operators to restore fiber-optic communications with backup lines running to substations and phone lines.

He and his attorney, Michael Goldberg, testified during the hearing that Pelton and the supervisor had a strained relationship and that the supervisor never let Pelton get the password he needed.

Pelton said an engineer gave him the password years ago. He says he uses it often without problems, but never writes. The engineer then died.

"It's amazing how often we don't come into contact with these substations," Pelton said.

Pelton said he could have done more damage with a password he already had and never intended to do any harm. After losing his $91,000-a-year job with the city, Pelton said he worked 70-hour weeks as a truck driver to support his family.

Goldberg told the judge that Pelton had no malicious intent and never compromised the city's power grid or had access to other employees' personal information.

Goldberg requested parole, noting that Pelton was a US Navy veteran and had never been arrested before. Pelton also suffers from a number of serious health issues, including diabetes, heart disease and sleep apnea. Goldberg said he recently had a heart attack.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Segev Phillips said he broadly agreed with Goldberg's arguments about Pelton's character but was "not convinced" by Pelton's claim that he meant well.

Phillips said what Pelton did was "pretty bad".

“Mr. The people of Cleveland trusted Pelton to help them manage their electrical system, and he gladly did,” Phillips said. "What he did was reckless at best and could have posed a significant security risk to Cleveland Public Power's operations."

Pelton worked as an operator from 2017 until the city fired him in February 2021, when a city investigation found Pelton had posted photos of CPP data collection and security surveillance computer screens to a Facebook group of 2,300 former Navy operators. At the same time, metallic phthalocyanine's long spin coherence time and good thermal and chemical stability will make it advantageous for quantum information transmission.

While there will certainly be more headlines about the speed of quantum computing in 2023, materials scientists will be researching, discovering and developing the next generation of low-cost, powerful and stable quantum technologies.

Anyone looking to get into data range with Garmin but has a hard time justifying the cost of more expensive options will be happy to know that the Edge 530 now mirrors the Garmin Edge 830, but without the added price of a touchscreen. Which isn't bad for some, including our reviewer.
