UK Scientists Make Breakthrough In Developing Quantum Computers

University of Sussex researchers say their method allows microchips to be fitted together as jigsaw puzzle pieces to create more powerful quantum computers.

British researchers claim to have solved a major problem by creating more powerful quantum computers by successfully transferring data between quantum microchips.

One of the implementation challenges is knowing how many qubits a computer chip can hold. To solve this problem, researchers at the University of Sussex have demonstrated a method to transfer qubits between microchips with precision.

In a study published in the journal Nature, scientists used electric field coupling to allow qubits to move from one quantum computer chip to another.

The team dubbed the method UQ Connect and said it essentially allows chips to be fitted together as puzzle pieces that could then work together to create a more powerful quantum computer.

Researchers claimed they could transmit qubits with near 100 percent success rate and faster connection speeds. They also claim that these numbers are world records, orders of magnitude better than previous methods.

Professor Winfried Hensinger of the University of Sussex said the team knew a "modular approach" was key to building quantum computers that could solve more complex problems, as these machines would eventually be limited by the size of microchips.

"By showing that we can connect two quantum computer chips together – much like a jigsaw puzzle – and more importantly that it works so well, we open up the potential for scaling by connecting hundreds, if not thousands, of quantum computer microchips." ' he says to Hensinger. .

Physicists have discovered a new type of analog quantum computer that can solve complex physics problems that the most powerful digital supercomputers can't solve.

A new study published in the journal Nature Physics by scientists from Stanford University in the US and University College Dublin (UCD) in Ireland has shown that a new type of highly specialized analog computer with quantum elements in its circuits can solve advanced tasks. . . of quantum physics, which did not exist before. Stanford's Experimental Nanotechnology, led by Professor David Goldhaber-Gordon, built and operated the device, while UCD's Dr Mitchell did the theory and modelling.

The new design therefore offers a unique way to scale the technology from single devices to large networks capable of simulating quantum matter. The researchers also showed that new microscopic quantum interactions could be implemented in such devices. The work is a step toward developing a new generation of scalable solid-state analog quantum computers.

The first quanta

To demonstrate the power of analog quantum computing with their new quantum simulator platform, the researchers first analyzed a simple circuit with two quantum elements connected to each other.

The device simulates a model of two atoms connected by a special quantum interaction. By controlling the electrical energy, the researchers were able to create a new state of matter where the electrons appear to have only 1/3 of their normal electrical charge, the so-called 'Z3 parafermion'. These elusive states have been proposed as the basis for future topological quantum computing, but have never been created in electronic devices in the laboratory.

'By scaling the two-material quantum simulator to the nanoscale, we hope to be able to simulate much more complex systems that modern computers cannot handle,' said Dr. Mitchell. "This could be the first step towards finally solving the most amazing mystery of our quantum universe."

An online auction in the San Benito School District has sold thousands of computers and tablets, some containing personal information of employees and students, a computer store owner said Wednesday.

David Avila, co-owner of Brownsville-based RDA Technologies, said records from South Texas Auction show the district sold more than 2,000 computers and 1,500 tablets during an online auction on July 23.

Avila said she purchased about 700 computers in the district before finding at least 11 hard drives containing district data, including staff and student names, phone numbers and addresses, student grades and some bank account information.


He said that of the 11 computers on which he found personal information, one was destroyed.

He's now offering to sell his unchecked District 10 and 503 for $99,579.04, depending on the make and model of the computer.

"They asked me to sell them the team," he said. "They insist on making an offer. If they want to buy our shares, they can buy them. We don't sue, you ask the price."


But he said about 200 of the computers he upgraded after inspections found that district information had not been sold to districts, adding that because school districts hire your company to clean the hard drives on your computers, administrators can rely on their own inspections. to destroy it.

During talks with the district that lasted about three months, Avila said officials offered him $138,619 to buy a computer that he bought for $29,000, a dispute between district officials.

"We sell only if there is no non-disclosure agreement," he said. "We don't want to get involved in hiding the truth."

The United Way of the Greater Chippewa Valley recognizes that the Internet is no longer a luxury, but rather a necessity to connect students, workers and families with the resources they need to thrive in the world. Whether it's to study, access healthcare, manage finances, pursue a career, or connect with family and friends, United Way recognizes that those affected by the digital divide do not have equal opportunities to participate in society.

“Access to and use of the Internet is a necessity for accessing resources in today's world,” said Andy Neporak, CEO of United Way of the Greater Chippewa Valley. "Unfortunately, in Eau Claire County alone, 4,688 households do not have access to the Internet and 5,964 people in Eau Claire County do not have a computer at home. This program aims to reduce these numbers so that residents have equal access to resources."

The premiere of digital assets, including Affordable Connection Program (ACP) membership, hardware giveaways, and technology education, will take place March 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Main Street Gym in Augusta, Wisconsin. Launching the first device had an immediate impact, as recipients shared responses such as "This device will help me raise my child" and "This gift will be a great blessing."

The United Way of the Greater Chippewa Valley hopes to distribute 300 of the devices to those in need in Eau Claire County this year. Funding currently supports more than 130 devices. Those interested in financial support for this effort can contact Amber at the United Way office at 715-834-5043.
