Prime Video movie of the day: Road House is an action-packed remake of the ’80s cult classic

When the news of a Road House remake was announced, fans of the original movie (including some on the TechRadar team) weren’t exactly happy. The ’80s film, which starred Patrick Swayze, is one of those good/bad movies that attracts a very devoted following – and that following wasn’t keen on anybody stepping into Swayze’s shoes. But the remake turns out to be more than just a photocopy; as The Guardian says, it’s both rowdy and campy.

The 2024 version stars Jake Gyllenhall as Elwood Dalton, a bouncer with a dark past, and moves the setting from Missouri to the Florida Keys. There, Elwood makes a living from amateur fights with the likes of Post Malone and ends up working at the titular road house. And that’s where the action happens.

Classic PlayStation and Saturn games may be coming to your iPhone next

With the advent of increased third-party support on iOS, video game emulators have rushed to the App Store to fill in the gap. The first bunch has been primarily for old Commodore 64 and GameBoy titles. However, this could soon change as we may see an emulator capable of running Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn games. The app in question is called Provenance EMU. In an email to news site iMore, project lead Joseph Mattiello said his team is working on launching their software to the App Store.

Provenance, if you’re not familiar, can run titles from a variety of consoles, including famous ones such as the Super Nintendo and more obscure machines. It’s unknown when the emulator will make its debut. Mattiello states they also need to make some quality-of-life fixes first and he wants to “investigate” the new rules. The report doesn’t explain what he’s referring to, but Mattiello may be talking about the recent changes Apple made to the App Review Guidelines. Lines were added in early April stating “developers are responsible for all the software inside their apps”. Plus, emulators need to “comply with all applicable laws”.

Cherry MX2A Review: A Revamped Classic

The Cherry MX switch is, arguably, one of the most important mechanical keyboard switches of all time. Some might argue it’s one of the best mechanical switches ever. No other switch has quite the same legacy. It’s been around for decades and is one of the few switches that run the whole gamut of keyboards. You can find it in everything from point-of-sale systems, office cubicles, and police cars to gaming setups and even premium, limited-run custom keyboards.

Until recently, nearly every mechanical gaming keyboard shipped with MX Reds, Browns, or Blues. For a long time, Cherry’s switches were the best option—mechanical switch or otherwise—for building a keyboard, and they had a reputation for their outstanding typing feel and longevity when compared to their rubber dome and scissor-switch contemporaries.

I have a love for the original Cherry MX switches. They still have a personality and charm no other switch has been able to replicate. I type on them regularly, almost every day, and always find them a treat to use, despite their shortcomings. So it came as a surprise when Cherry announced a successor with the MX2A. How could one of the most beloved and long-lasting mechanical switches suddenly change so drastically? Could these changes make the MX better?

Cherry’s Legacy

The Cherry MX Black is the mechanical switch. It’s a fairly heavy linear switch made entirely of Cherry’s proprietary blend of plastics and has been in production since 1983 with only minimal changes until now. Cherry rates its MX switches for 100 million keypresses, and it’s not unheard of for MX Blacks to be in operation even after two decades of near-constant use. They eventually became a signifier of quality: If you saw a keyboard with MX switches, you could be pretty sure that it would be both reliable and enjoyable to type on.

As the custom keyboard scene started to form in the early 2000s, people realized something interesting—the longer you used MX switches, the smoother they were to type on. This was true for all of them but most noticeably for MX Blacks. They were the most common in high-use office and point-of-sale systems and had a heavier spring that required more force to be pushed down, resulting in the plastics seeing large amounts of wear.

These “vintage” MX Blacks—which had to be desoldered from older keyboards—became incredibly sought out by enthusiasts for their smoothness, and their scarcity increased demand even further. At the time, Vintage MX Blacks were the best switches possible for a custom-built keyboard kit.

It’s worth noting that these worn-in switches are fairly scratchy by today’s standards. Modern switches, made from higher-end materials and lubed from the factory, are leagues ahead of MX switches in smoothness. However, many keyboard hobbyists today see the MX Black as having a “good” scratch compared to the scratchiness of other switches. It’s consistent, subtle, and rather charming as long as you don’t expect perfection. There are no sudden bumps or catches, but instead a consistent friction that feels more “real” and satisfying than something engineered for perfect smoothness.

Here’s the new batch of classic movies on Apple TV+ in April

Apple TV+ subscribers can enjoy a collection classic movies, with over two dozen that were just added in April. The list includes three John Wick films, the original Ghostbusters, a pair of Transformers movies and more.

There were already a selection classic movies on the streaming service, plus all the content Apple TV+ itself produced.

Timeless entertainment for you to enjoy

Almost every film or TV show that appears on Apple TV+ was created just for the streaming service. But it’s not 100% Apple original programs — the service also makes additions of classic movies. It’s at least a partial answer to criticism that TV+ has a smaller library than most of its rivals. (Small but top quality.)

Recently, a new slate of movies has appeared on Apple TV+ at the beginning of each month. And if there’s one on the list you’d like to watch, don’t dawdle: they are individually labeled as staying on the series through the end of April or May.

But there are sometimes holdovers. That’s true for a collection of 27 that was already on the service that includes three Star Trek movies, Mad Max: Fury Road, 200 and Minority Report.

A faithful reimagination of a classic

Classic JRPGs are sort of having a moment.  has brought new life and a new generation of gamers to one of the most iconic franchises around. More recently has given us a spiritual sequel to Ogre Battle that’s so good even series creator Yasumi Matsuno (and director of Final Fantasy Tactics) has . And later this summer, Square Enix has challenged itself with reimagining one of the most beloved SNES titles of all time after more than 15 years. But now I’ve had the chance to play a preview of Visions of Mana, it feels like the developers have retained the spirit of the franchise but in a game that feels much more at home in 2024.

One of the biggest challenges for Visions is the transition from classic 2D sprites to a much richer and more expansive 3D world. And while there are some visual similarities to recent Dragon Quest games, I think Square Enix has done a wonderful job of maintaining the franchise’s identity. The game’s color palette is bright and energetic, recreating many of the pastel hues seen in previous games. Character designs skew more towards cute and adorable unlike some of its darker and edgier rivals, which gives the title a playful vibe, just like Secret of Mana did more than two decades ago.

Another thing that has translated quite well is its gameplay. Back in 1993, Secret of Mana’s ring menu was lauded for making it easy to switch between weapons and items (or even characters) without making combat feel stilted or clunky. And with the Mana franchise having made the jump to action-orientated gameplay (instead of turn-based) way before mainline Final Fantasy games did, Visions’ assortment of speedy combo-based attacks, spells and class strikes (which are sort of like limit breaks) are a great fit. You can even launch enemies in the sky and rain down blows while they’re suspended, which is a real treat as I’m a sucker for any game with air juggles.

Each of the four main characters (Val, Hinna, Careena and Morley) also have distinct classes like Rune Knight or Oracle, so they all have a unique style and feel in combat. I found myself gravitating towards the thief/catdude Morley, whose katana felt extremely fast and fluid. My only small complaint is that with Square also bringing back the concept of three-person parties, things can get kind of hectic when you’re trying to keep tabs on people performing multi-hit combos against large groups of foes.

The most important addition to Visions is the introduction of Elemental Vessels, which give you new abilities both in and out of combat. When you’re simply running around the map, similar to items like the hookshot in Legend of Zelda, vessels provide important traversal abilities. For example, the Sylphid Bommering allows you to create floating platforms so you can cross valleys and chasms or summon gusts of wind so you can jump to a faraway ledge. Meanwhile in battle, you can use the boomerang to trap enemies in the air, deal damage and blow away surrounding foes that might want to interrupt your attack. So while it’s not a groundbreaking feature, I appreciate how Visions is using new mechanics to add an extra layer of depth to multiple facets of the game.

Unfortunately, one trait of previous Mana games that hasn’t carried over to Visions is the use of a big roster with branching storylines. For longtime fans, this might be a bit of a bummer, but when asked about this change, Visions of Mana producer Masaru Oyamada told me (via an interpreter) that one of the team’s goals for this installment was a more focused story. So while I couldn’t glean much about the game’s plot during my one-hour demo, there’s still hope that Visions will still deliver an engaging narrative.

But my biggest takeaway from the preview is how Oyamada is trying to respect the legacy of such a storied franchise while also delivering fresh and exciting experiences for new and old players alike. Oyamada said “I really thought about the elements that I loved when I was a child, so I leaned into those feelings in order to drive decision making for the latest installment in this series.”

On top of that, I like how mechanics like the Ring menu are pulling double duty in this game. Oyamada told me that not only does this system act as a nod toward players familiar with the franchise, it also serves as an important accessibility tool that makes it easy to switch items and plan your attacks in the heat of battle. Meanwhile, to help the series grow and evolve, Oyamada said “We thought about the elemental aspect as something that was kind of under-utilized and under-appreciated in previous Mana games.”

And with Oyamada having been in charge of the remasters for Secret of Mana, Trials of Mana (AKA Seiken Densetsu 3) and others in recent years, even though much of the original development team for the series has moved on, it’s clear Square Enix has preserved a lot of the DNA that made previous Mana games so great all those years ago.

In some ways, I wish this game was called Spirit of Mana, as that feels like a more appropriate title for a series whose last entry was released in 1995. Regardless, I can’t wait to play more when Visions of Mana officially goes on sale sometime this summer.

One final note is that Visions of Mana is slated to be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X and PC. Currently, Square Enix says that while “We are looking to support Steam Deck compatibility, we cannot confirm at this time as we are still optimizing the game.”

Classic Macintosh SE stands with new Studio Display [Setups]

Pimping out a computer setup with vintage gear is super-cool, even if the old stuff doesn’t get much use (or is solely for display purposes). Today’s M1 MacBook Pro setup recently added a new Studio Display, and both of those modern machines bask in the glory of a nearby classic Macintosh SE from the 1980s.

The ancient all-in-one computer still works and it even gets some use.

Redditor nickdmiller showcased the old-and-new setup in a post entitled, “Old school and new school.”

“Just got the new Studio Display and loving it with my M1 [MacBook Pro],” Miller said. “Also pictured is vintage Macintosh SE, iPad Pro and custom-painted Magic Keyboard.”

So as noted, Miller runs an M1 MacBook Pro with a brand-new Studio Display and a 12.9-inch iPad Pro in the central setup.

“Do you use the iPad Pro as a secondary display?” a commenter asked.

“Yeah, I use it as an extension of my MacBook. I normally keep calendar and mail open on the iPad all day and use the display for focused task work,” Miller replied.

Then another person asked if the Magic Keyboard gets its look because of a skin applied to it. That’s a type of cover you can leave on as you use the keyboard. But in Miller’s case, it’s a custom paint job.

“It’s painted from ColorWare,” Miller said. “I believe they stopped selling Magic Keyboards, but still have trackpads and mice.” (A quick check of the website suggests that among Apple products, they only do Apple Pencil, AirPods cases, AirTags, AirPods Max and Magic Mouse.)

And off to the right in the photograph sits a classic Macintosh SE from the 1980s. An improvement on the Macintosh Plus, Apple produced the SE from March 1987 to October 1990. The Macintosh II came out at the same time and the enhanced SE/30 came out toward the end of SE’s run, though the two overlapped for a time. 

Miller’s SE is in full working order and actually gets some use, he said.

“It works and I have Oregon Trail on it … it’s mainly just a display piece but fun to turn on and let the kids play it,” he noted.

Apple also released a “making of” video to show how the movie was produced with an iPhone 15 Pro.

The capabilities of iPhone cameras have increased dramatically over the years, and have become a strong selling point for the devices. To demonstrate their potential, Apple periodically releases a “Shot on iPhone” film.

The latest entry is Midnight, an adaptation of a manga that Tezuka released in 1986.

Apple’s official description says:

“Director Takashi Miike brings to life Midnight, a manga by Osamu Tezuka. All shot on iPhone 15 Pro. A mysterious taxi driver lends a hand to Kaede, a young girl chased by assassins.”

Osamu Tezuka has been called the Father of Manga, and some people consider him the Japanese equivalent of Walt Disney as he also made animated series and films. He’s credited with taking manga mainstream, first with children’s stories and later with offerings for adults.

Behind the scenes

The point of any “Shot on iPhone” film is to show off the capabilities of Apple’s handsets, and that requires a “making of” film. Of course there’s one for Midnight.

It includes commentary by director Takashi Miike, who is no stranger to action films.

Mini Cooper E Classic Trim

Mini has unveiled a new version of their electric Mini, the Mini Cooper E Classic Trim and the car comes with a range of 305 kilometers and it can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 28 minutes.

The car comes with 135 kW or 184 horsepower and it features 290 Nm of torque, it has a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 7.3 seconds and it comes with a range of design changes over the standard model.

Mini Cooper E Classic Trim

The fully electric MINI Cooper combines a modern, ecological drive with brand-typical driving pleasure. Like the entire new MINI model family, the MINI Cooper E is also available in four redesigned vehicle trims. The Classic Trim offers expressive body colors and contrasting roof finishes. The puristic design of the iconic MINI three-door model is particularly expressive in Sunny Side Yellow, with a contrasting roof and mirror caps in white.

In this trim level, the surfaces of the cockpit are covered with two-tone black and blue knit material. This creates a stylish contrast to the high-quality synthetic leather seats made of Vescin. They are available in gray or black with a perforated houndstooth pattern.
