Apple Releases iOS 17.4.1 and iPadOS 17.4.1 With Bug Fixes and Security Improvements

Apple today released iOS 17.4.1 and iPadOS 17.4.1, minor updates to the iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 operating systems. The new software comes a couple of weeks after Apple released iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 with app changes in the European Union, new emoji, and more.

iOS 17
iOS 17.4.1 and iPadOS 17.4.1 can be downloaded on eligible iPhones and iPads over-the-air by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

According to Apple’s release notes, the iOS 17.4.1 update includes important security updates and bug fixes.

Apple will likely begin testing iOS 17.5 in the near future, with betas expected to come out in the next two weeks.

US Department of Defense claims to have flushed out 50,000 vulnerabilities with bug bounty program

The US Department of Defense (DoD) passed the significant milestone of logging more than 50,000 vulnerabilities through its vulnerability disclosure program (VDP).

The VDP was launched in November 2016 by the DoD Cyber Crime Center (DC3), and logged the 50,000th bug bounty on the March 15 2024.

macOS Sonoma 14.4 Bug ‘Destroys Saved Versions in iCloud Drive’

Apple’s latest macOS Sonoma 14.4 software update appears to be guilty of another bug, this time affecting saved versions in iCloud Drive.

Versions are normally created automatically when users save files using apps that work with the version system in macOS. (To check if your Mac is using the past versions system, look for a “Revert To” option in the app’s File menu.)

According to The Electric Light Company‘s Howard Oakley, users running macOS 14.4 that have “Optimize Mac Storage” enabled should be aware that they are at risk of losing all previously saved versions of a file if they opt to remove it from iCloud Drive local storage.

In previous versions of macOS, when a file is evicted from local storage in iCloud Drive [using the Remove Download option in the right-click contextual menu], all its saved versions have been preserved. Download that file again from iCloud Drive, and versions saved on that Mac (but not other Macs or devices) have remained fully accessible. Do that in 14.4, and all previous versions are now removed, and lost forever.

Oakley said his own tests confirmed that this behavior does not happen in macOS Sonoma 14.3 or macOS Ventura, so it is exclusive to macOS 14.4. For users who have already updated, he suggests either not saving files to iCloud Drive at all, or turning off Optimize Mac Storage.

To perform the latter in System Settings, click your Apple ID, select iCloud, and then toggle off the switch next to “Optimize Mac Storage.” You may need to perform this action twice – reports suggest it can turn back on by itself. Google paid out over $10 million in bug bounties last year

Google has announced that it paid out $10 million as part of its bug bounty program in 2023, its second-biggest year ever and bringing its total rewards since 2010 to $59 million.

Last year, the company’s $10 million was directed to a total of 632 researchers across 68 countries, with the highest payout coming in at a life-changing $113,337 as Google looked back its commitment to cybersecurity.
