First look at The Big Cigar shows wild Black Panther caper

[ad_1]

Apple TV+ unveiled a first look Thursday at The Big Cigar, an upcoming limited drama series starring André Holland as Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton. The show traces his wild escape from the FBI to Cuba.

The Big Cigar debuts on May 17 with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes every Friday through June 14. “It’s all true,” Apple TV+ said. “Mostly.”

First look at The Big Cigar limited series coming to Apple TV+ May 17

According to Apple’s first look at The Big Cigar, it’s a six-episode drama based in strange-but-true reality. NAACP Image Award winner Janine Sherman Barrois serves as executive producer, along with Jim Hecht and Joshuah Bearman. Multi-award-winning actor, director and producer Don Cheadle directs and executive produces the first two episodes.

So the show “chronicles the story of Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton’s escape to Cuba, and is based on the monumental, eponymous magazine article of the same name.”

And if you’re unfamiliar with Newton, he was theAfrican American political activist who founded the Black Panther Party in 1966 with Bobby Seale in Oakland, California. Newton ran the group and its social programs. It ceased operations in 1982. He was murdered in 1989.

Here’s the streaming service’s description provided with the first look at The Big Cigar:

Based on the magazine article by Joshuah Bearman (Argo), who will also serve as executive producer, The Big Cigar is the incredible true story of Hollywood revolution meeting social revolution: it’s a wild caper of Black Panther founder Newton escaping from the FBI to Cuba with the assistance of famed producer Bert Schneider in an impossibly elaborate plan — involving a fake movie production — that goes wrong every way it possibly can. And somehow, it’s all true. Mostly.

André Holland leads a renowned ensemble cast including Alessandro Nivola, Tiffany Boone, P. J. Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Moses Ingram, Rebecca Dalton, Olli Haaskivi, Jordane Christie and Glynn Turman.

Barrois (Claws, The Kings of Napa) serves as the series’ showrunner. Jim Hecht (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty) wrote the first episode. The series comes from Warner Bros. Television, which has a deal with Barrois and her Folding Chair Productions company. In addition to Barrois and Hecht, Bearman, Joshua Davis and Arthur Spector (Little America) of the Epic production company serve as executive producers.

Watch The Big Cigar on Apple TV+

Now that you’ve had a first look at The Big Cigar, take note the new limited series streams starting May 17. Apple TV+  is available by subscription for $9.99 with a seven-day free trial. You can also get it via any tier of the Apple One subscription bundle. For a limited time, customers who purchase and activate a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac or iPod touch can enjoy three months of Apple TV+ for free.

After launching in November 2019, “Apple TV+ became the first all-original streaming service to launch around the world, and has premiered more original hits and received more award recognitions faster than any other streaming service. To date, Apple Original films, documentaries and series have been honored with 471 wins and 2,090 award nominations and counting,” the service said.

In addition to award-winning movies and TV shows (including breakout soccer comedy Ted Lasso), Apple TV+ offers a variety of documentaries, dramas, comedies, kids shows and more.

OLED smart TV display: How big is too big?

[ad_1]

Is bigger always better? Nope. And the debate rages on over how big OLED smart TV display suits a computer setup. Would you go large at over 50 inches, or stick to, say, 42 inches or smaller?

Today’s MacBook Pro setup raised the issue again, surfacing some sensible advice. And the smart TV in question is on sale!

This post contains affiliate links. Cult of Mac may earn a commission when you use our links to buy items.

MacBook Pro drives big 42-inch LG OLED smart TV display

Redditor Katert (“Kat”) showcased the setup in a post entitled, “My endgame setup.” They run a 16-inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro open on the desk as a secondary display, though they said they might go to clamshell (closed) mode. The laptop drives a huge 42-inch LG C2 Series OLED smart TV.

“Really curious these days about how large to go with a screen,” said a commenter. “Getting closer to large project 3D modeling, and working at 1:20 scale, a 50-inch at the back of an 80 cm depth would be so cool. How does this (what – 30 inches) feel? Would you go larger — Mebbe a 4K screen at larger?”

“I have an 80 cm deep desk and thought it would be on the short side, but it’s very doable,” Kat replied. “I have a keyboard tray I can take out to extend it a bit more, but so far I didn’t feel the need to. Came from a 32-inch screen, and this is so much more immersive, it’s crazy. For reference; its an LG C2 OLED in 42 inch.”

Any ‘burn in?’

Another commenter considering a 42-inch OLED TV for a display mentioned one concern. “Only concern is burn-in cause I basically keep Chrome windows open all day long. But love the size and design,” they said, referring to images burning in and becoming permanent on the screen.

“I had the same concern as well, but I’ve kept ABL on (while a lot of others turn it off using a service remote),” Kat replied. “It automatically dims the screen when it’s being static. Also, I’ve read experiences where people did turn it off and used it for 100s of hours and there’s still no burn in.”

OLED smart TV display

We’ve come across quite a few big smart TVs used as displays in setups. The posts showcasing them sometimes turn into debates over how big a display is too big, and are they unhealthy for both necks and eyes.

A commenter on Kat’s post concluded that 42 inches is a good size, while larger may be too big (and they should know).

“I have a 55-inch monitor, it’s nice for certain tasks, but not all tasks,” they said. “If you need to look at something in the upper corners it’s a bit of a strain. Next time I change monitors I’m going down to a 42 inch.”

Kat’s LG OLED 8 million self-lit OLED pixels that achieve 100% color fidelity and high contrast. The TV’s α9 Gen 5 AI Processor 4K adapts to the content on screen, adjusting picture and sound settings automatically.

And Filmmaker Mode aims to make movies as their makers intended, enhancing the viewing experience with Dolby Vision IQ and Dolby Atmos.

What’s more, LG Game Optimizer mode with Nvidia G-SYNC, FreeSync Premium and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) enables fluid on-screen motion. And Game Optimizer manages game settings.

And while the C2 came out in 2022 (normally $1,400, now $880), the C3 is available now, too (normally about $1,200, but on sale now for $997).

Heybike Tyson Review: Big on the Basics

[ad_1]

Photograph: Will Matsuda

The frame was also thick enough that I knocked my knees on it while pedaling. There’s a reason why a motorcycle has a thick frame and a bike has a slim one—with a motorcycle, you don’t need to pedal. This would seem to indicate that the pedals on the Tyson are mostly just for show. However, when you exclusively use the throttle, I get barely 15 miles out of the battery (it’s worth noting here that at 115 pounds, I myself am not that big of a person). The range increased dramatically whenever I pedaled, but was still a far cry from the Tyson’s advertised 55-mile range.

I also noticed a bit of delay when the bike offered assistance. With more expensive Bosch, Specialized, and Shimano drive systems, the assist feels pretty seamless. With the Tyson, it was more herky-jerky, which can be disconcerting if you don’t really want to go from zero to 60 on your way home from returning library books.

Still, before I cracked the screen, I found the Tyson had many more features than you might expect from a bike at this price point. Hydraulic front and back suspension, combined with the cushy seat and huge, plushy tires, made for a comfortable ride. The small diameter of the wheels made it maneuverable for crowded sidewalks full of obnoxious preschoolers.

Photograph: Will Matsuda

Photograph: Will Matsuda

The 1200W motor carried me up the steepest hills with ease. I also really liked that the throttle revs you up to only your selected assist level. For example, if you’re on the first assist level, it speeds you up to only 6 miles per hour; the second, 10, and so forth. That reduces the herky-jerkiness a little. The bike also had a number of thoughtful little touches, like auto-on lights—you’d be surprised how often you need these in a rainy place like Oregon. A convenient triangle in the middle of the frame made it easy to lock up (you’d also be surprised by how hard it is to lock up a big ebike).

All in all, I think the Tyson is an affordable way to dip your toes into ebike waters. Making the switch from a car to a bike is a big transition, and biking requires a lot of accessories to make it actually fit into your lifestyle. The Tyson is a good way to see if you like or need things like lights, blinkers, or a rack before you make the switch. After all, a really nice bike doesn’t help you if you never get around to riding it because you never bought lights or a rack. Just be careful and don’t drop it! I’m still waiting for that replacement display to get to me.

Don’t be afraid of AI on your next Pixel or Galaxy, it’s not really a big deal yet

[ad_1]

My Dad has a Galaxy S22, and he’s perfectly content, but it’s time for him to upgrade. He’s paid off the phone with Verizon and they owe him a new one. I suggested an iPhone 15, for my own sanity as his tech support, but he’s staying loyal to Samsung, so I offered to help him set up a Galaxy S24. He refused. That phone has AI, he says, and he doesn’t want an AI phone. I get it, but I’m here with news that AI has been greatly exaggerated. There is nothing to worry about when it comes to AI on your phone.

Actually, there is no artificial intelligence (AI) on your phone. I’ll tip my hat to Samsung on this one, they have been calling their new features “advanced intelligence,” and that’s an apt distinction. If you have concern over general AI and what it means to the future of humanity, I can assure you that your concept of AI does not come close to what you’ll find on a smartphone today.

Google Pixel 8 Pro

Do you see artificial intelligence in this phone? Nope (Image credit: Google)

Before I get into what AI on a smartphone really is, let’s put away concerns. AI is not going to make decisions for you, not in any way. It won’t make phone calls, or send text messages. It won’t change anything, you still make all the changes.

The Chevy Blazer EV is back on sale with functioning software and a big price drop

[ad_1]

Chevrolet is resuming sales of the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV following reports of major software issues, . The company says the malfunctions have been patched, thanks to “significant software updates.” To entice wary consumers back into the fold, Chevy has slashed prices on the vehicle. The sticker price has been reduced by $5,600 to $6,500, depending on the trim.

Here’s how that breaks down. The Blazer EV LT AWD now starts at $50,195, instead of $56,715. The RS AWD now sells for $54,595, down from the original MSRP of $60,215. Finally, the RS RWD goes for $56,170, down from $61,790. These prices all include destination charges.

Also, the 2024 Blazer EV line is eligible for that $7,500 federal tax credit. This lowers the price of the LT AWD to just $42,695 and can now be applied , so buyers don’t have to wait for a rebate check. If that’s still too rich for your blood, the Blazer LT FWD EV is still slated for release later this year. Chevrolet says it’ll start “under $50,000”, though exact pricing has yet to be revealed. If Chevy follows through with that pricing promise and it qualifies for the full tax credit, we could be looking at a real budget-friendly contender in the EV space.

However, the EV Blazer line has experienced months of bad press following last year’s software malfunctions, drive motor control failures to glitchy and blank infotainment screens. Who knows if the price cuts will be enough for people to forget that embarrassment. GM has said that it’ll be instituting these software fixes to other EVs under its umbrella, . Chevrolet’s parent company also owns Cadillac, GMC and Buick.

One thing is for sure. Despite proclamations that the there’s still a whole lot of curious consumers out there. Manufacturer Rivian by announcing a trio of new vehicles this week, racking up over 68,000 preorders in under a day.

The Human-AI Synergy:

It’s important to remember that ChatGPT is a tool, not a magic wand. Its effectiveness hinges on your ingenuity and guidance. The true power lies in the synergy between human creativity and AI-powered capabilities. Use ChatGPT to push the boundaries of your imagination, test your assumptions, and iterate rapidly. Remember, you are the inventor, the visionary, the driving force behind your creation. ChatGPT is there to empower you, not replace you.

A Future Built on Invention

The future belongs to those who dare to dream and build. With ChatGPT as your accomplice, the journey from idea to invention becomes shorter, smoother, and infinitely more exciting. So, unleash your imagination, embrace the power of AI, and prototype your way to the next big thing. Remember, every groundbreaking invention began as a spark in someone’s mind. Let ChatGPT fan that spark into a roaring inferno of innovation.
