Apple Reinstates Epic Games EU Developer Account, Paving the Way for Alternative App Store

[ad_1]

Apple today reversed a decision to shut down Epic Games’ developer account in the European Union, and the account has now been reinstated. In a statement to MacRumors, Apple said that Epic Games has committed to following the rules, allowing Epic Sweden to be reaccepted into the Apple Developer Program.

Following conversations with Epic, they have committed to follow the rules, including our DMA policies. As a result, Epic Sweden AB has been permitted to re-sign the developer agreement and accepted into the Apple Developer Program.

When Apple terminated the ‌Epic Games‌ Sweden developer account earlier this week, it effectively prevented ‌Epic Games‌ from developing an alternative app marketplace for iPhone users in the European Union. Apple claimed that the account had been terminated because ‌Epic Games‌ had previously breached its contractual obligations, and that the court decision in the ‌Epic Games‌ v. Apple legal battle gave it the right to shut down any ‌Epic Games‌ account at any time.

Apple’s Phil Schiller engaged in a conversation with ‌Epic Games‌ CEO Tim Sweeney where he asked Sweeney for written assurance that ‌Epic Games‌ would adhere to the new rules for alternative app marketplaces, but Apple did not feel that Sweeney’s response was thorough enough. Apple claimed that Epic is “verifiably untrustworthy,” with the Cupertino company also citing negative comments from Tim Sweeney about Apple’s Digital Marketplace Act (DMA) compliance.

There was immediate public blowback from Apple’s decision to kill the account, especially because the emails from Apple made it look like the ‌Epic Games‌ account was terminated because of Sweeney’s criticism. From Schiller’s email:

In the past, Epic has entered into agreements with Apple and then broken them. For example, you testified that Epic Games, Inc. entered into the Developer Program with full understanding of its terms, and then chose to intentionally breach the agreement with Apple. You also testified that Epic deliberately violated Apple’s rules, to make a point and forfinancial gain. More recently, you have described our DMA compliance plan as “hot garbage,” a “horror show,” and a “devious new instance of Malicious Compliance.” And you have complained about what you called “Junk Fees” and “Apple taxes.”

Your colorful criticism of our DMA compliance plan, coupled with Epic’s past practice of intentionally violating contractual provisions with which it disagrees, strongly suggest that Epic Sweden does not intend to follow the rules.

The European Union quickly stepped in and asked Apple for “further explanations” on why it had shut down the EU ‌Epic Games‌ developer account, a move that likely led Apple to reconsider its decision. ‌Epic Games‌ in a statement to MacRumors said that Apple’s response demonstrates that the European Commission plans to act swiftly to enforce the DMA, and that the ‌Epic Games‌ store is coming to Europe.

Apple has told us and committed to the European Commission that they will reinstate our developer account. This sends a strong signal to developers that the European Commission will act swiftly to enforce the Digital Markets Act and hold gatekeepers accountable. We are moving forward as planned to launch the Epic Games Store and bring Fortnite back to iOS in Europe. Onward!

‌Epic Games‌ announced plans for an alternative app marketplace shortly after Apple introduced support for alternative app stores in the iOS 17.4 beta. ‌Epic Games‌ has pledged to bring Fortnite and other games to the ‌iPhone‌ through its own dedicated storefront, but specific timing for the launch of the ‌Epic Games‌ Store for iOS has not yet been provided.

Though ‌Epic Games‌ is working on an alternative app marketplace, the company has criticized Apple’s compliance with the DMA. Sweeney has called Apple’s plan a “devious new instance of Malicious Compliance” and has said that ‌Epic Games‌ will continue to “argue to the courts and regulators that Apple is breaking the law.”

Apple Podcasts now feature transcripts

Apple has this week announced the introduction of transcripts for Apple Podcasts. Perfect if you are listening to your favorite podcast on Apple Podcasts, but you’re struggling to catch every word. Maybe you’re hard of hearing, or perhaps English isn’t your first language. Now, Apple has introduced transcripts to transform your listening experience and transcripts are now available for podcast episodes. This means you can read along as you listen, or even search the text for specific topics that interest you.

You’ll find this new feature incredibly helpful if you’re someone who likes to skim through content to find the parts that matter most to you. With just a tap on the transcript, you can jump straight to the relevant section in the audio. It’s like having a map that guides you directly to the treasure you’re seeking.

For those who have hearing impairments, this update is particularly significant. It opens up a world of podcasts that were previously difficult or impossible to enjoy. Apple has clearly focused on making sure everyone can access their content, regardless of hearing ability.

Apple Podcast Transcripts

The transcripts aren’t just a wall of text. Apple has paid attention to the details, choosing fonts and colors that are easy on the eyes. Whether you’re reading on a phone, tablet, or computer, the experience is designed to be comfortable and adaptable to different screen sizes and reading preferences.

And it’s not just for English speakers. The feature supports multiple languages, including French, Spanish, and German. This reflects Apple’s understanding that their audience is global, and they’re making efforts to cater to listeners from all corners of the world. To take advantage of this feature, make sure your device is running on iOS 17.4 or iPadOS 17.4.

Podcast creators haven’t been left out either. They can upload their own transcripts, which means they can ensure the text is accurate and represents their show perfectly. This is a great way for creators to reach a wider audience, including those who might need or prefer written content.

The rollout of transcripts will happen over time. New episodes will come with transcripts right away, but the back catalog of older episodes will be updated gradually. This means that as time goes on, you’ll have access to transcripts for more and more episodes from the extensive library of Apple Podcasts.

So, whether you’re a podcast enthusiast looking to enhance your listening experience, someone who needs a text version to fully enjoy a podcast, or a creator aiming to make your content more accessible, Apple’s new transcript feature is here to make a difference. Keep an eye out as this feature grows, and enjoy the richer, more inclusive world of podcasting that Apple is building. Apple To Appeal €1.8 Billion Fine for Music in Europe

Apple Music

Apple has been handed a €1.8 billion fine in Europe by the EU regulators for allegedly abusing its dominant position for music streaming apps, Apple has announced that it will be appealing the ruling in Europe.

Apple has claimed that Spotify, which has a 56 percent share of the European Music market and pays Apple no fees for using its App Store, is behind the ruling and the company that brought the original complaint against Apple with the European regulators.

The primary advocate for this decision — and the biggest beneficiary — is Spotify, a company based in Stockholm, Sweden. Spotify has the largest music streaming app in the world, and has met with the European Commission more than 65 times during this investigation.

Today, Spotify has a 56 percent share of Europe’s music streaming market — more than double their closest competitor’s — and pays Apple nothing for the services that have helped make them one of the most recognizable brands in the world. A large part of their success is due to the App Store, along with all the tools and technology that Spotify uses to build, update, and share their app with Apple users around the world.

Apple has said that it will appeal the ruling by the European Commission and you can see full details and their full statement over at the Apple website at the link below.

Apple backtracks on removal of iOS 17.4 Home Screen Web Apps

iOS 17.4

Apple’s iOS 17.4 software update is coming this week, it brings major changes to the App Store in Europe and now Apple has announced that it has changed its mind on removing Home Screen Web Apps in Europe.

Previously, Apple said that it would be disabling Home Screen web Apps in Europe for “security and privacy reasons’, it has now decided that it will not be removing these apps and their functionality with iOS 17.4, after considerable backlash from consumers, developers, and also the EU regulators. You can see what they have to say below.

Previously, Apple announced plans to remove the Home Screen web apps capability in the EU as part of our efforts to comply with the DMA. The need to remove the capability was informed by the complex security and privacy concerns associated with web apps to support alternative browser engines that would require building a new integration architecture that does not currently exist in iOS.

We have received requests to continue to offer support for Home Screen web apps in iOS, therefore we will continue to offer the existing Home Screen web apps capability in the EU. This support means Home Screen web apps continue to be built directly on WebKit and its security architecture, and align with the security and privacy model for native apps on iOS.

Developers and users who may have been impacted by the removal of Home Screen web apps in the beta release of iOS in the EU can expect the return of the existing functionality for Home Screen web apps with the availability of iOS 17.4 in early March.

This is good news as it means that the full functionality and features of Hoem Screen Web Apps will still be available in Europe when the in Europe when the iOS 17.4 software update is released this week. We are expecting the update either today or tomorrow, as soon as we get some more details, we will let you know.
