Next year will see the first American Formula 1 driver in years, but according to one of the biggest names in the sport, the cultural impact on the US may be less than many predicted.

Williams Racing recently announced that 21-year-old American Logan Sargent will replace Nicolas Latif on its roster for the 2023 season. Sargent will become the first American driver in F1 and the first full-time driver to be an American driver, after Current IndyCar driver Alexander Rossi had five starts in 2015. Prior to Williams' announcement, Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner asked a question about the growth of the sport in the United States during a special appearance on Bloomberg's Power Players show. Prior to Sargent's promotion to F2, there was considerable debate among American fans about the importance of having an American driver and whether the team could sign him for it.

However, he shouldn't be fighting for championships and winning races any time soon. Instead, he could spend a lot of time on or behind the field for a last-place Williams team in 2022.

According to Horner, a significant effect on American sports fans is already taking place: increased interest in corporate America.

"It's unbelievable," Horner said. "Now we have several partners based in the US. We have a lead partner in Oracle that joined us this year. We have companies like AT&T. For example, we announced US entities like Exxon Mobil. The arrival of the American and Playing.

And it's not just Red Bull. There is an influx of companies based in the US or with strong ties to the US working with other teams and with F1 as a whole.

A big part of this new attraction is the growing awareness, especially in the US, that F1 is the pinnacle of innovation.

“What better premium sport to truly align a brand than Formula 1?” Gerald Youngblood, Lenovo's director of marketing for North America, recently told Insider. "There are also very practical benefits in terms of our brand alignment and visibility with other brands that share this passion for innovation and have audiences that can appreciate the story Lenovo tells."

This perception of F1 is not new to its ardent fans, but it is to the corporate world. Five years ago, F1 only had one technology partner. In addition to Lenovo, F1 is now partnering with several technology companies, including US companies like AWS and Zoom.

After enjoying sales growth during the pandemic, the US marijuana industry is showing signs of slowing down as it faces economic and regulatory challenges and people choose to spend their money elsewhere.

In states with established marijuana markets, such as Oregon and Washington, sales at retail stores and dispensaries were lower than last year, according to a report by cannabis data firm Headset. In Colorado, one of the most established markets in the state, June sales were down 11.4% from a year earlier.

"What we saw in 2020 was a huge spike in sales related to the epidemic because people stayed home, got stimulus money from the government, and couldn't do much," said Chris Wash, CEO of Marijuana Business Daily.

Between March 2020 and March 2021, average year-over-year sales in Colorado increased 25.8 percent, according to Headset. But as the epidemic began to wane last summer, the report found, the frequency of marijuana purchases and the amount of money people spent began to decline.

For example, in July, people spent an average of $55.21 per visit at the average store in Colorado. That's about $4 less than the July 2021 average of $59.73, according to Headset Research.

"Retailers discount in times of high inflation because they are trying to get products off the shelves," Wash said, adding that businesses also face stiff competition from "thriving" illegal duty-free markets.

"We operate in a very challenging and competitive landscape, where our biggest competitor is the black market," said Troy Dacher, CEO of The Parent Company, a California cannabis company.

Overall industry-wide retail sales continue to grow and are expected to increase as major new markets come online, including New York, Maryland and Missouri.

According to an analysis by Marijuana Business Daily, combined US medical and recreational marijuana sales could reach $33 billion by the end of the year, up from $27 billion last year. Sales are expected to reach $52.6 billion by 2026.

"The long-term horizon is very bright," Wash said. "Going through this industry."

But for now, investment money is drying up as the market becomes more active.

According to Viridian Capital Advisors, a New York-based cannabis advisory firm, total US cannabis capitalization fell 62.6% from a year earlier and equity funding was 96.3%, to $2.1bn. last year at $78. . million today.

Part of the problem, experts say, is that investors are tired of waiting for federal regulations.

The lack of federal regulation means that marijuana businesses in states where recreational sales are legal still lack access to traditional banking services or institutional capital. A congressional bill called the Safe and Fair Bank Foreclosure Act, or AMN, would have lifted the restrictions, but it has yet to pass the Senate despite passing the House multiple times.

“A lot of investors come in with the idea that there will be some move at the federal level to reschedule drugs or pass some kind of banking law,” said Matt Hawkins, founder of Entourage Effect Capital, a cannabis investment firm.

Hawkins said he and other investors are becoming more selective in the companies they fund, with a preference for those that already have significant market share. That could hurt smaller players hoping to catch up, he said.

"The industry is in a state of internal consolidation, with new licensees struggling to raise capital and expand efficiently," said Robert Beasley, chief executive of Fluent, which operates medical clinics in Florida, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Despite the economic hurdles, however, Beasley said he hopes "some small steps of regulatory relief" could help get the industry back on track.

Why do movie theaters love this wooden boy so eager to live on flesh and bones? Guillermo del Toro 's Pinocchio is the second adaptation of the fairy tale released this year, following Monster Dead and Alive, which premiered on Disney Plus three months ago. But for those looking for more than just nostalgia, this story is a hit in itself.

Carlo Collodi's 1883 novel is a moral warning to Italian peasants: if they don't work hard, they may end up like poor Pinocchio, who was turned into a donkey as punishment for his impulsive nature. But through its many iterations, the puppet boy becomes the exact opposite of Frankenstein's monster, proving that the human ability to create life from inanimate matter can be a source of joy rather than reckless vanity.

Del Toro, the man behind this year's Pan's Labyrinth , The Shape of Water , and Nightmare Alley, has a deep love for monsters of all races. With Mark Gustafson who plays Fantastic Mr. Fox Animation Supervisor Wes Anderson Del Toro takes poetry literally and creates some of the most beautiful stop-motion animation in years.

There's a beautiful artistic quality in the moonlight filtering through a skylight, or in the raging waves crashing against a lush mass of monstrous sea creatures. The figures here have the same rough, cropped appearance as Geppetto's cuckoo clock figures, although their clenched jaws and pursed lips give a real sense of the muscles under their skin.

Aside from Del Toro's fascination with Pinocchio's inherent evil and the intricate masterpieces he creates, there's little here to tie him to Collodi's original story. But the film is richer. The director, along with co-writer Patrick McHale, returns to one of his most prominent themes: deeply dehumanized fascism and rigid notions of conformity and masculinity. But this time it's a musical with an elegant mask from the Alexandre Desplat box.

Adapted as a story about Mussolini's Italy in the 1930s, Geppetto (David Bradley) drunkenly carves out Pinocchio (Gregory Mann) in a blind rage at his fate after losing his beloved son Carlo under the darkest of circumstances. Inspired by an illustration by Gris Grimley from Kollodis' 2002 novel, this Pinocchio is very wobbly, Del Toro is very untidy – all the joints are broken and the nails are exposed.

The Blue Fairy that gave him feelings now appears as a mountain spirit (voiced by Tilda Swinton). Her older sister (also Swinton), who rules the underworld, is a sphinx-like creature served by a small band of zombie rabbits. Even Pinocchio's leader and conscience, poor writer-turned-poor Sebastian J. Cricket (Ewan McGregor) (with hints of McGregor's Moulin Rouge ) cannot see his continued misery as a commentary on the intellectual flogging of an authoritarian regime.

That may seem like a lot for a film still (to some degree) aimed at children, but Del Toro and McHale's openness on the subject speaks directly to the power of childlike innocence. Pinocchio is only classified as a loner because he doesn't know the cruel stupidity of adult society. A fascist city official (Ron Perlman) doesn't turn the boys into donkeys, but sends them to a youth camp to play war. In unconscious rebellion, the recruits laugh at the futility of their game. It may not be Collodi's invention, but it is a sign that the enduring power of his stories stems directly from his versatility. The wooden boy belongs to whoever woke him up.

Gov. Greg Abbott Bans TikTok On State Phones And Computers, Citing Cybersecurity Risks

Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday banned the social media platform TikTok from use on government cellphones and computers, becoming the latest Republican governor to target the video-sharing app over cybersecurity concerns.

Abbott expressed concern that TikTok posed a threat to government information, as the app is owned by Chinese company ByteDance Ltd. Last week, FBI Director Chris Way expressed concern that the Chinese government could use app recommendation algorithms to manipulate content or users. He warned that the Chinese government does not share US values ​​and said "this should concern us."

In 2021, the video-sharing app that popularized the dance trend and spawned viral challenges had about 87 million users in the United States. The federal government has been warning about TikTok's security risks for years. In 2020, then-President Donald Trump threatened to ban the app.

The Republican governors of South Dakota, South Carolina and Maryland have banned the use of TikTok on government devices. Wisconsin Republicans have asked their Democratic governor to do the same.

In a letter to Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, House Speaker David Phelan and heads of government agencies, Abbott said banning TikTok on government cellphones, laptops, tablets and desktops would protect sensitive information and critical infrastructure from the Chinese government.

"TikTok collects vast amounts of data from its users' devices, including when, where and how they engage in online activity, and presents this wealth of potentially sensitive information to the Chinese government," Abbott's letter said.

Abbott acknowledged that TikTok says its data is stored in the U.S., but expressed concern that the Chinese government could use the app to track U.S. citizens.

The governor directed the Department of Public Safety and the Department of Information Resources to develop a plan to address the issue of TikTok use on public employees' personal devices. One of the areas Abbott mentioned is network restrictions that would prevent access to TikTok within the agency.

Abbott left some flexibility in banning the social media, allowing government agencies to use TikTok for law enforcement investigations and "other legitimate purposes."

The Indiana attorney general sued TikTok on Wednesday, alleging the company misled users about how it could access their data, the New York Times reported. The lawsuit also alleges that the app provides access to adult content to minors.

Earlier this year, the Austin Business Journal reported that TikTok leased more than 125,000 square feet of office space in Austin.
