If you have an older Pixel phone and you’ve been wondering when the newest Pixel features would finally be arriving, I have … news! It might be this week, but probably not. There is no rhyme or reason to Google’s Pixel feature drop, and confusion about features like circle-to-search portends deeper problems. Google made a promise to support its latest Pixel 8 phones for a very long time, and this debacle makes me doubtful that Google will deliver.

This isn’t really about the Pixel Feature Drop, not yet. I have problems with Google’s erratic ‘Feature Drop’ model, but the most important thing Google did for phones this year was its promise to support the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro for seven years from when they launched. That’s unprecedented in the phone world. Apple supports its iPhone models for five years, and it offered the longest support until Google stepped up.

Of course, Apple has been supporting five-year-old phones for more than a decade, while this longevity promise is new for Android makers like Google and Samsung. Apple has a proven track record. Until the Pixel 8 gets its final OS update in 2031 and the Galaxy S24 in 2032, we won’t know if Google and Samsung can truly deliver on the seven year promise, or what that delivery will look like.

If Google is going to beat the best, it needs to be the best

In the meantime, I’m watching for Google to follow Apple’s pattern. Apple has reliably updated its phones every year, so if Google is going to match or beat Apple’s promise, it will need to match its practices.

The iPhone XR from 2018 got the latest IOS 17.4 update recently. It also got iOS 17, iOS 16, and iOS 15 on the day those operating systems were offered. There is no delay for older iPhone models. It is obvious that Apple’s diligence keeping its phones up to date provides a clear path to that final update down the road. I feel confident that my iPhone 11 will get iOS 18 this year because it’s gotten every single iOS update, and every new iOS feature, right on time.

Google is asking me to have the same confidence in Pixel phones, and that’s not an easy ask. So far, things have been smooth with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Google’s biggest software addition of the past year, the new circle-to-search functionality, was added to those phones on day one. Of course, the new search feature inexplicably launched on the Samsung Galaxy S24, but it showed up on the latest Pixel phones at the same time. No harm, no foul, Pixel 8 fans.

Google said it would bring circle-to-search to older Pixel devices, and the rollout has been odd. This week, in a Pixel Feature Drop, the new feature was added to the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. The Pixel 7a and Pixel Fold, which are both newer phones than the Pixel 7, have not been updated with the new feature. Why?! All of these phones use the same Google Tensor G2 chipset. The Pixel 7a is a bargain phone, but it still has 8GB of RAM, just like the Pixel 7.

Why not bring the feature to all of these phones at the same time? The only reason I can imagine is that Google didn’t think it worthwhile to devote the developer resources. Google only has so many developers, and a limited number of people working on older phones. They focused on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro first. Other phones will come later.

This makes sense at a small company, but Google has more than 180,000 employees. This smacks of laziness or a limited vision of Google’s Pixel team. Google appears to be abandoning its customers with no rhyme or reason. Thanks for spending $1,500 on the Pixel Fold! Maybe eventually it will get the same features as this Pixel 7 you could have bought for $400.

This doesn’t happen with Apple, a company that supports its phones long-term. Apple doesn’t leave its older phones behind, or leave its most important buyers wondering when the cool new features might come their way. If you have an iPhone 12, or an iPhone 13 mini, or an iPhone 15 Pro Max, you got the new NameDrop feature on the same day as everybody else.

In this way, Apple simply treats its owners better. It is easier to recommend the best iPhone today because I know, from Apple’s history, how it will treat iPhone owners. I’m not so sure about Google.

The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are great phones, and I’d have little trouble recommending them, but that’s not to say I’d have NO trouble. Will you be angry with me when Google offers a cool new AI feature for Pixel 9 owners but gives older phones neither feature nor explanation? I asked Google why the Pixel 7a was left out of the circle to search party, and they said they had nothing to share.

I’ve been recommending the Pixel 7a as a great bargain phone option, but now I wonder if Google cares about that phone as much as I do. I can’t recommend it if Google is going to leave it in feature limbo for the rest of its lifespan, for no apparent reason.

The line in the sand for me is Google’s seven-year promise, and that started with the Pixel 8, so that’s the phone I hold to a higher standard. From this phone forward, including a possible Pixel 8a that may arrive soon, I will expect Google to treat its phones equally, and to treat its owners with respect and clarity. If Google is going to change the game, making promises that beat Apple, it needs to show us that it’s ready to play ball.

Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I’m still playing now, around two years after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it’s fun, but also difficult.

What’s more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.

But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for today’s Wordle answer, you’ll probably need some hints for this game too.

I’m a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Quordle hints to game #775 and the answers to the main game and Daily Sequence.

Quordle FAQs: Everything you need to know

What is Quordle?

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And rather than complete them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar.

It’s played online via the Quordle website and you can also get to it via the Merriam-Webster site, after the dictionary purchased Quordle last year.

As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a fresh challenge each day.

The website also includes a practice mode – which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game proper! – and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements – specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing lots of times, or guessing particularly hard words.

Oh, and it’s difficult. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two.

5. Answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle’s Hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can’t blindly throw letters at it and expect to win – you’ll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.

That’s the case in Wordle too, of course, but it’s even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won’t want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.

For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options – you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe – but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

Secondly, if you’re faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options – for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH – you’ll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options.

In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It’s risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it’s the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure – you simply don’t have enough guesses.

In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a great guess, as it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.

Warning! Below are spoilers for the fourth season premiere of Barry , Hooray! and "The Best Place on Earth." Read at your own risk!

Barry begins its fourth and final season with the main character in prison, just as we expected from the trailer. Barry is behind bars awaiting trial for the Janice Moss murder, and it turns out he's not alone. Barry is sent to the same prison as his former patron-enemy Fuchs , and this leads to a surprising reunion between the two.

At first, Fuchs was horrified to learn that Barry was in prison with him. After all, Barry promised to kill him as soon as he got the chance, while Fouche told Jean Cassino that Barry killed Janice. Desperate to win before Barry attacks him, Fuchs calls the FBI and offers to turn off the phones in an attempt to further incriminate Barry and gain additional protection.

Fuchs tries to get Barry to confess to another crime in the prison yard, but is shocked by what his former partner has to say. Against rampant confession or outrage, Barry Fuchs apologized. He explains that none of them would be in this position if he hadn't spent the game trying to figure things out for himself. Fuchs was surprised.

Near the end of the first episode, Barry deliberately insults a guard, apparently in an attempt to hit him, and is inevitably beaten. Fuchs is pushed into a room and Barry is crushed, presumably in an attempt to get more recognition from him as he stammers from the beating. When they were alone, Fuchs cut the cord and apologized to Barry for using it. They hug and Barry smiles for the first time in the entire episode.

Was Fuchs honest with Barry?

As much as I appreciate the connection between two men who have lost everything, I've seen enough of Barry to distrust Fuchs. Even when they were on good terms, she was able to manipulate and deceive Barry to her own advantage.

Unless he can cut a big deal with the FBI, Fuchs looks certain to spend most of his life behind bars. I think this suggests that when Fuchs found out about Barry's move and his work with the FBI, he called Hank and attacked Barry. He may still care about Barry, but Fuchs only seems to care about protecting him.

I also can't believe that Barry won't kill Fuchs before the end of season 4. It was revealed in the premiere that his state of mind was clearly worse, in fact, worse than most of season three. His emotions were all over the place, and so were his thoughts. If she found out something else about Fuchs that hurt her, like a phone call to Hank, I believe she would have killed her former employee and probably wouldn't have cared as much about what happened next.

Barry certainly sets up some interesting storylines for the rest of season 4, especially with Jean and Sally dealing with their own drama. I can't wait to see how the rest of the season ends and why Bill Hader thought the time was right to end the hit HBO series. With Barry possibly getting out of prison to help the FBI fight an international crime syndicate, this season could be very interesting.

Texas A&M International University is hosting a free and open to the public rhythm concert on Wednesday, April 19 with guest artist Valerie Naranjo.

The concert will take place from 18:30 to 19:30 in the Concert Hall of the Fine and Performing Arts Center of TAMIU. The TAMIU Percussion Band is a small group, usually composed of 12-14 percussionists, and offers a variety of music in concert to challenge the students.

Best known on Broadway for his involvement in the West African keyboard, The Lion King is rightfully among Naranho's highlights. He also plays drums on Saturday Night Live and has recorded and performed with Tori Amos, David Byrne, Airto Moreira, The Paul Winter Consort, The Philp Glass Ensemble and others.

In an interview with TAMIU, Naranjo said he discovered the marimba in northern Mexico when he was six years old, but didn't fall in love with the instrument until college.

"As I got older and listened to bands like Parliament Funkadelic and Earth, Wind & Fire, I loved that music and the sound of the marimba as well," he said. "I was lucky during my freshman year of college when I met a graduate student at the University of Colorado who came up to Western marimba and played this amazing thing that I've never heard from another marimba player in my life."

This instrumentalist introduced him to an instrument called the Ghana Gil and he made several intercontinental trips to develop his skills on the instrument.

"I realized I had to go to the country at some point, hence the first of 25 trips to Ghana in 1988," Naranha said. “I used to listen to records, especially the records of master musician Kakraba Lubi who was a gili performer in the Ghana National Dance Company.

When I first heard it I thought Parliament Funkadelic, Earth, Wind & Fire, James Brown, they knew this instrument before, because their music comes from the harmonic and rhythmic content that comes from that instrument. "

Originally from southern Colorado, Naranjo said he sees many similarities between his community and Laredo.

"Southern Colorado isn't very close to Laredo, Texas, but culturally it's very close," he said. "I really have to say that when I see many of you teachers and students it's like I'm looking at myself in the mirror. Every time you look in the mirror at a family gathering or a gathering of people who grew up like you, it's comforting, sometimes confusing, but always a great learning experience.

As a Colorado high-flyer, Naranha encourages TAMIU students to follow their dreams, even if they are not yet at the epicenter of the music scene.

"There are a lot of exceptional students here," he said. "I really hope they can say that by not being in Indianapolis or San Francisco or New York, I think they would do great things. Through good manners, respect for others and how we can be useful. For them, the sky is the limit.
