For close to two decades, buying a new PlayStation game meant picking up a Blu-ray disc. That is set to change in the coming years as Sony prepares to go all-digital for new game releases.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will stop producing physical discs for all new games released on PlayStation consoles starting January 2028.
After that date, all new PlayStation titles will be sold in digital format only through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers.
The company said the move reflects changing consumer preferences, with digital game purchases now significantly outpacing physical discs.
Existing physical games won’t be affected
The change only applies to new games launching from January 2028 onwards.
Sony says games that have already been released, or titles already scheduled to launch on physical discs before January 2028, will continue to be available in disc format. Existing physical game collections will also continue to work on compatible PlayStation consoles.
This means PlayStation owners can still buy new physical releases until the end of 2027. Games released on disc before the January 2028 cutoff will still work on compatible PlayStation consoles.
Why PlayStation is making the switch

According to Sony, the decision reflects the continued shift towards digital game purchases across the gaming industry.
Sid Shuman of Sony Interactive Entertainment said consumer preferences have increasingly shifted from physical discs to digital formats, making it the preferred way for many players to purchase and access games. As a result, Sony said it is adapting to consumer trends with how most of its users prefer to access and play games.
Going digital also reduces the cost of manufacturing, shipping and distributing Blu-ray discs, while allowing games to be delivered instantly through online stores.
What this means for Malaysian gamers

The biggest impact will be on gamers who still prefer buying physical copies from local retailers. While digital downloads are more convenient, physical discs remain popular for several obvious reasons.
For many gamers, owning a physical copy is an emotional decision. Having a tangible boxed game on the shelf simply feels more satisfying than a mere digital download, especially for long-term collectors.
Physical discs are also easier to lend, trade or resell. Unlike digital purchases that are permanently tied to a PlayStation account, a disc can be shared with family or friends, or sold once you’ve completed the game.
Another advantage is the thriving second-hand market. Gamers can often pick up pre-owned titles at a significant discount through marketplaces or game stores, making physical discs a more affordable way to build a game library. Players can also recover part of their spending by selling completed games instead of leaving them permanently tied to their account.
Another reason why gamers prefer physical releases because publishers tend to bundle them with Limited Edition or Collector’s Edition packages that include collectibles such as steelbooks, art books, figurines and other exclusive memorabilia that aren’t available with digital purchases.
Separately, Sony has also announced that the PlayStation Store for the PS3 and PS Vita will begin shutting down in select markets this year before closing globally in July 2027. Previously purchased content will remain available for download for the foreseeable future.
