Australia News Live: Woodside Profit Triples Aided By Ukraine War Energy Price Boost; Perrottet Calls For End To Covid Vaccine Mandates

Activists say the Woodside climate report is false

Along with its earnings call (ka-ching), energy giant Woodside also released its annual climate statement, whether it's a drilling company or a fossil fuel company.

At last year's AGM, shareholders came closest to rejecting the company's 2021 climate report, with just 51% accepting it. This year's report is expected to be re-listed at the AGM and dismissed as a "failure" by Greenpeace , market forces and the Australian Center for Corporate Responsibility .

The company says:

Woodside is committed to growing in the energy transition by creating a low-cost, low-carbon, profitable, sustainable and diversified portfolio.

(“Low-carbon,” according to Woodside, is based on comparisons with “historical and/or current arrangements”).

Despite this, the company will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2025 and 30% by 2030. The company has committed $5 billion in targeted investments in new low-carbon energy products and services by 2030 to offset fossil fuel emissions.

Glenn Walker, Greenpeace Australia's head of defense and strategy in the Pacific, said that despite setting an "ambitious" zero target for 2050, Woodside had made no progress on plans to cut emissions.

walker said:

Woodside's climate report is a school assignment, essentially a review of last year's plan, that shows the company has no real commitment to reducing emissions.

Woodside is playing farm-house on an imaginary future increase in gas consumption, and this is in line with the model of credible energy analysts such as the International Energy Agency.

One of the company's planned projects is the Burp Hub gas project, led by Woodside, which will emit more than 6 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent (or about 12 times Australia's national emissions).

Will van de Paul, interim chief executive officer of Market Forces, said Woodside's plans "are not compatible with zero emissions by 2050".

"Woodside is pursuing a strategy that undermines climate action by paying large bonuses to executives to ramp up oil and gas production and develop new oil and gas projects," Van de Pool said, adding that market urges investors to "save capital". choose solutions. , voted against the company's compensation report and rejected candidates for re-election at the company's general meeting in April.

ACCR lead analyst Alex Hillman said fossil fuel companies like Woodside could see "big gains" in 2022, but those gains could be "short-lived" as energy markets accelerate the transition to renewable. .

hillmann said:

Today, Woodside remains attached to its ambitious 2021 climate plan, calling it a "consensus strategy."

Major investors confirmed that despite the company's overreliance on shareholders, Woodside plans to use the offsets to meet 100% of its 100% reduction goal.

Woodside executives are paying attention to the climate threat and it's time to call.

April will apparently be an opportunity to do bookkeeping.

G20 Finance Meeting To End Without Consensus On War In Ukraine

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Financial leaders from the world's biggest economies failed on Saturday to resolve differences over the war in Ukraine and move forward with steps to restructure the debt of troubled countries, people familiar with the talks said.

A meeting of Group of 20 (G20) finance ministers and central bank governors hosted by India could end without a joint statement as the three delegates failed to agree on how to describe the conflict in Ukraine. he told Reuters.

The United States and its allies in the G7 industrialized nations pressed for a statement calling for full condemnation of Russia for its neighbor's attack a year ago, but representatives of Russia and China opposed it. to that language.

Two of the delegates noted that Russia and China were upset that the G20 platform was being used to discuss political issues.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen earlier told Reuters that it was "absolutely necessary" to include a statement condemning Russia.

"And I think the G7 has come together around that, so I expect that's necessary and appropriate," he said.

Russia, a member of the G20 but not the G7, considers its actions in Ukraine a "special military operation" and avoids calling it an invasion or war.

India is pushing for the meeting to avoid using the word "war" in any statements, G20 officials told Reuters.

India, which chairs the G20 this year, has maintained a neutral stance in the war, refusing to blame Russia for the attack, seeking a diplomatic solution and significantly increasing purchases of Russian oil.

India and China were among the countries that abstained when the United Nations voted on Thursday to call on Moscow to withdraw troops from Ukraine and end the war.

In addition to the G7 countries, the G20 bloc also includes countries such as Australia, Brazil and Saudi Arabia.

The delegates noted that the meeting will most likely end with a speech by the host summarizing the results of the discussions.

"In the absence of consensus, India's option would be to publish the bank statement," the official said.

India's Ministry of External Affairs, Finance and Information did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In that regard, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) held a meeting on Saturday with the World Bank, China, India, Saudi Arabia and the G7 to restructure the debt of troubled economies, but there were disagreements among members, Cristalina said. . . Georgieva, executive director of the IMF. .

"We just finished a session where it was clear that there was a consensus to iron out the differences for the benefit of the countries," Georgieva, who moderated the discussion with Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, told reporters.

A spokesman told Reuters that some initial progress had been made, particularly on language, but restructuring had not been discussed in detail.

Yellen said the meeting, which was mostly an organizational one, had "no results."

Several more round tables are planned at the spring meetings of the IMF and the World Bank in April.

China, the world's largest bilateral lender, and other countries are under pressure to cut loans to developing countries.

In a video address to the G20 meeting on Friday, Chinese Finance Minister Liu Kun reiterated Beijing's position that the World Bank and other multilateral development banks should participate in debt relief through joint reductions with bilateral lenders.

Yellen said she was urging all bilateral creditors, including China, to engage in meaningful talks ahead of the debt meeting, adding that Zambia's debt problem and Sri Lanka's financial guarantees were "very urgent".

According to government figures, Zambia owes Beijing nearly $6 billion of its $17 billion foreign debt at the end of 2021, while Ghana owes China $1.7 billion, according to the Institute of International Finance, a services trade body. Financiers focus on emerging markets.

The China Africa Research Initiative think tank estimates that by the end of 2022, Sri Lanka will owe Chinese creditors $7.4 billion, or about a fifth of its external public debt.

Key To Providing Equal Opportunity To Women In The Sciences? ‘Look Harder’

Key To Providing Equal Opportunity To Women In The Sciences? 'Look Harder'

Author Kate Zernick and her book The Exceptions. © Harry Zernick; Scribner author Kate Zernick and her book Exceptions.

Nancy Hopkins and 15 MIT colleagues teamed up in the 1990s to show gender differences among teachers. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology agreed, and these changes helped bring about a sea change for women in all academic and research settings. How did this happen? Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Keith Zernick tells his story in his new book, Exceptions (Scribner, February). In this Q&A, she talks about the achievements she's helped create, the challenges women in STEM still face, and what's key to ensuring equal opportunities for girls and women in science.

Question: Why are you writing this book? why now

A: I started thinking about writing this book in January 2018, just as the #MeToo movement was starting to grow. These dire circumstances got me thinking about the kind of discrimination women were talking about at MIT in 1999: the hidden ways women are marginalized in the workplace, especially as they get older. I think it's more common and subtle. One of the key points the women at MIT made was that opening doors for women is not enough, you have to make sure you value them and treat them as equals in their careers. What struck me was that the challenges women face in science highlighted a larger problem, which is that we still don't take women seriously in intellectual and professional circles. This story is even more relevant now that the country is once again debating whether we need affirmative action. These women believed that there would be pure meritocracy with an emphasis on scientific data and facts. You discover that there is no such thing.

The efforts of Nancy Hopkins and her colleagues led to advances in academic scholarship. Has it influenced other science fields and STEM careers?

When the MIT report was published, MIT had never had a department head. Today, women lead the university, from the board of trustees to the president and dean of science. (Like the states of Massachusetts and the city of Boston). Back then, the Ivy League had only one female president, and this fall, six of those eight organizations are led by women. This is a small elite segment, but these universities are good at spotting trends. There are other subtle changes: when MIT women first began to address the issue, no female professors took maternity leave because of stigma. Professors at many universities now say that they are no longer the exception when colleagues send their children to day-care centers that didn't exist in 1999. Universities usually stop teaching when women (and men) have children. The President of the National Academy of Sciences and three of President Biden's top science advisers are all women, as are the people leading vaccine development as the world battles the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet very few women win the Nobel Prize in Science, reminding us that we still have a long way to go in terms of education and women's contribution.

Given the pay gap between women and men in STEM positions, how important is the MIT Group? What comes after the fight?

In most regions, women are still paid less than men for the same work. There is nothing a group of women at a university can do about that, it all depends on the men and women who run companies and universities. The women at MIT had no idea the report would be read off campus. But the excitement surrounding her story prompted other universities to run similar tests. It also prompted the National Science Foundation to create a program aimed at eliminating inequalities in teaching approaches, grant awarding, and propensity for employment.

The number of women entering science and technology colleges is still disproportionately high. A 2018 report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine found that nearly half of the women at these colleges have been sexually abused. A small percentage of these disorders are linked to sexual assault. By far the biggest problem was what the report called "gender harassment" by women at MIT. These are sexual slurs against women in science, rude comments that make women feel unwelcome in this environment. This is especially true for doubly marginalized women: women of color, lesbians, or women we traditionally see as masculine in appearance or behavior.

When Larry Summers, then-president of Harvard University, commented on women's "internal problems," it sparked another storm of controversy on the subject. How many people still think women's progress in this area is "extraordinary"?

I followed this story closely in 2005, but when I came back I was shocked to see a spate of articles defending Larry Summers, despite much research to refute his claims. Some of her ideas – not only that women lack inner strength, but also that they don't want to work 80 hours a week – have been around since the beginning of the last century. I think there is a lot of awareness now. “Exclusions” also points out how these women articulate subtle forms of discrimination; They assumed it was due to circumstances or blamed themselves. I think we now have a better understanding of systemic bias.

Nancy's report was never published. Why? Do you think the information there can help current and future women who want to break the glass ceiling?

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has not released the full report because it contains stories by or about professors that are subject to confidentiality. You cannot anonymize these stories. Even the word "junior math teacher" would indicate a woman, for there were one or two of them. The stories are in the book and I think they illustrate the assumptions and patterns women still have to work with and the pitfalls to avoid.

What was the most surprising thing you learned from reading this book?

That shouldn't surprise me and us, but we were reminded of how long we've been talking about the same problems, even finding solutions, but doing nothing. President Kennedy's Women's Commission recommended paid maternity leave in 1963; It took decades to get it. Research conducted in the 1970s showed that we all, men and women, valued the same CV less if it had a woman's name on it rather than a man's. It's a reminder that every generation thinks it has solved a problem, but every generation reinvents it.

What is the key to ensuring equal opportunities for girls and women in science?

Changing attitudes is key when it comes to hiring institutions and talking about who does the most important work in science. Who comes to mind when we hear the word "genius" – research shows that it's mostly men. MIT's School of Engineering made strides toward hiring more women after the report, as a male dean refused to chair re-education committees, as he often does, saying women were not eligible for the appointment. He said look again.

California Politics: Its A Family Affair

California Politics: Its A Family Affair

One thing I have noticed in my years of reporting on how energy works at the California Capitol is how much it cuts down on families.

Legislative seats often pass from parent to child or from husband to wife. Five members of Los Angeles County's legendary Calderón family , including three brothers, a son and current Assemblywoman Lisa Calderón, wife of a former Assemblywoman, have served in the Legislature. And a few years ago, Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio and State Sen. Susan Rubio made history as California's first team of sister legislators .

So, the story of Assemblywoman Mia Bonta and her husband Lic. Gen. Rob Bonta is famous and boring at the same time.

Both Democrats from Alameda, Bay Area, Mia Bonta was elected to fill the Assembly seat held by her husband, Rob Bonta, after he was named attorney general in 2021. The two have been in the news for the past few weeks when reporters questioned whether it was ethical for Assemblyman Bonta to control taxpayer funds for the office of Att. General Good. Mia Bonta chaired the Assembly Budget Committee, which dealt with public safety, which was under the jurisdiction of the Judiciary, headed by her husband.

Political theorists expressed concern about the arrangement, and editorials criticized legislative leaders for their apparent conflict of interest . Even Chuck Todd, moderator of NBC News' Meet the Press , had his say .

“It's a bad image and it will only reinforce what happens when you have unilateral power,” NBC Sacramento correspondent Ashley Zavala said after reporting the story.

In the end, the parliamentarian announced that he would depart from the decision of the Ministry of Forests and Justice . A few days later, the department was formalized when the budget president transferred oversight of the judiciary to another subcommittee. The conflict seems to have been resolved immediately.

Mia Bonta assures that her position has been approved by the Ethics Congress and that she has been challenged to promote transparency and avoid confusion.

"Certainly, I think you have to watch it carefully," he told me.

However, a broader question arises. Where should the line be drawn between the common interests of public servants who are family members and their personal responsibilities?

In addition to many family members serving together in the legislature, several state legislators have spouses who serve in the legislature on policy issues or work in publicly funded local governments.

"I don't see these situations as different from certain situations," said Mia Bonta.

Vanata refers to himself as a life partner and a service partner. They have shared a passion for social justice since they met their freshman year at Yale. And they used their office to achieve the same goal.

Assemblyman Bonta wrote a bill last year to create a new division within the Justice Department to study gun violence prevention policies. Within months of ending up in the Legislature, she joined her husband in announcing that his department would still create a new office , but it did not spark any controversy.

But before Mia Bantan was elected to the Assembly, I reported on a couple's financial dealings that some experts say were legal but unethical. As a parishioner, Rob Bonta created a non-profit foundation and collected donations from organizations that lobby the legislature. He then made payments from the fund to the nonprofit organization where his wife worked. (He claimed the $25,000 as a loan when I asked him about it in 2020, even though his tax return at the time didn't show it.)

This isn't the first time Rob Bonta has sent money to Mia Bonta's employer. For several years, he donated money from his campaign funds to organizations he worked for and received letters saying parties would not use the funds to pay his salary because state law prohibits politicians from using campaign funds for personal gain. . He also asked interest groups to make donations to non-profit organizations for which he worked. "We're working on areas that share our passion," he told me at the time.

After my presentation, Rob Bonta resigned from his foundation's board of directors and introduced new rules that prohibit both members of a couple from making spending and donation decisions to organizations where one of them works. And California's political watchdog approved a new rule that requires officials to disclose their affiliation with an organization when asking donors to give money to a group hired or controlled by that official, their employees or their family members.

“These are impacts or relationships to potential initiatives that the public wants to know about,” commission staff said in a report .

Jessica Levinson, a professor at Loyola Law School and former chair of the Los Angeles Ethics Commission, said officials should not send money to companies where family members work because of the potential for personal gain.

In other cases, he says, it's not always clear where to draw the line.

"When it comes to these potential conflicts of interest or ethical issues, we all worry that someone in public service is making a decision in the best interest of their spouse, their child or their friend, but not all of us," he said. saying. . . "At the most basic level, it's concerning."

Limitation of oil revenues. Easier said than done

I couldn't help but think of former Governor Jerry Brown when Governor Gavin Newsom spoke live with Elon Musk on Wednesday's Tesla Motors video feed . Newsom was in Palo Alto for a tour of the company's new engineering facilities that were closed to the media on a day when lawmakers in Sacramento debated a proposal to impose sanctions on oil company profits.

So why did I think of Brown?

Brown hasn't communicated publicly with the Legislature very often, but when he did, there was a commitment to work with lawmakers to address issues of concern. On rare occasions, Brown has supported a controversial idea with his political influence, appearing at Capitol Hill hearings and testifying before the Legislature. He did so in 2011 when he pushed to reform the state pension system , and twice in 2017 when he supported a gasoline tax to finance road repairs and expanded cap-and-trade programs to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Newsom has not attended a legislative hearing since taking office in 2019.

At Wednesday's hearing , the first of a special session announced by Newsom in October , it became clear that the governor and lawmakers were no closer to resolving how to stop rising gas prices, Times reporter Taryn Luna reported. . Lawmakers share concerns about the potential unintended consequences of his attempt to cap operating profits, while some oil market insiders say Newsom's idea to cap refinery profits won't solve the problem. Other economists joined the Newsom administration in demanding more transparency from refiners about pricing, storage, supply contracts and inventory.

According to Luna, the hearing highlighted Newsom's problem because he began speaking publicly about the oil industry fines before he had a detailed plan. Solving the problem is more difficult than it seems.

Race to replace Feinstein

There are two developments in the Senate race this week. She will succeed Dianne Feinstein , who has said she will retire at the end of her term next year after a historic 32 – year career representing California in the US Senate .

  1. Progressive Democratic Rep. Barbara Lee of Oakland officially announced her candidacy , telling Times reporter Seema Mehta that she is "an advocate and advocate for people who don't have a voice, who really need a voice." However, the announcement was not surprising. Last month, Lee told his colleagues in Congress that he intended to run, but that his participation could make the race livelier. Lee's experience as a longtime social justice activist adds another perspective to the field involving representatives of the Democratic Party . Kathy Porter , an economic populist, and Adam B. Schiff , a former prosecutor known for presiding over the first impeachment trial of President Trump. Though Porter and Schiff have a more successful fundraising record than Lee , they will be supported by a new supercomputing committee led by consultants tied to wealthy Bay Area donors who have poured millions into racial justice and criminal justice initiatives. in California. Keep track of who's running and who's not in the California Senate race with this handy list of long shots and wild cards .
  2. The new poll shows the race as a close contest between Schiff and Porter , who have built a national profile and are active fundraisers but draw cross-generational Democratic voters. About 4 in 10 registered Democrats and independent voters said they were undecided on the nominee, so the dynamics could change between now and the March 2024 primary, compared with two other applicants, according to a survey by the Institute for Research. Democratic governors form coalitions for abortion rights

Democratic governors of 20 states have launched a network designed to expand abortion access following a US Supreme Court ruling that struck down a woman's constitutional right to terminate a pregnancy and instead gave regulatory power to state governments. The organizers, led by California Governor Gavin Newsom, describe the Reproductive Freedom Alliance as a way for governors to share best practices, promote abortion rights in their states, and provide services to Americans in states with stronger laws. strict.

Controversy is brewing over the UCLA governor's ultra-competitive student transfer guarantee program.

Governor Gavin Newsom , along with lawmakers and many supporters, is pushing the University of California to ease the transfer process and increase access for more students from across states, particularly UCLA, UC Berkeley and UC San Diego. But a new analysis of Newsom's plan calls it "particularly myopic" and says it "violates a fundamental principle of justice."

These rural schools are facing a financial crisis. Will partisanship cut the lifeline?

Residents of rural Northern California, where a conservative ethos clashes with the state's famously liberal ethos, often feel left behind in the corridors of power in Sacramento and Washington. Their cities are shrinking. Their forests are burning. And for their schools, a financial cliff could come.

A Pair Of Pole Vaulters Master The Technical, Physical, Thrilling Sport

A Pair Of Pole Vaulters Master The Technical, Physical, Thrilling Sport

Athletes are drawn to the pole vault for many reasons. Some seek an adrenaline rush outside of their prime gaming season. Others are tired long-range competitors.

The common denominator of all the flyers describes their main interest: it looks great.

Nicholas DeWolf of Junior Falls Church recalls how Olympic gold medalist Armand Duplantis rose 20 feet into the air before sliding onto the foam padding below, and "wanted to see what it looked like," DeWolf says.

Junior Osborne Park responded to the same Viviana Rodríguez. Even as a former gymnast, she couldn't have imagined achieving such technical perfection, until she tried. "It always looked cool: people were running around with big sticks and then they just blew up," Rodriguez said.

Pole vaulting is, at its core, a highly technical sport that requires a balance of speed, strength, agility, and body awareness. While most sports rely on basic movements like running or throwing a ball, pole vaulting requires athletes to retrain their minds and muscles to accommodate the movements they don't have. I may never try.

It also combines skills that are often mutually exclusive. Having core and shoulder strength isn't enough to leap through the air and leap forward; You also need to be able to run like a sprinter. The drop experience is awesome, but can you do it while carrying a 14ft pole?

DeWolfe and Rodriguez are among the best newer outfield players to emerge from Northern Virginia. Many coaches say that the most important keys to success in sports are: speed (because strength and technique can be developed over time) and determination (because jumping requires a huge mental load).

They are aiming for a title at the Virginia Indoor Championships this weekend.

The speed helped DeWolfe stand out. (Jonathan Newton/Washington Post) The speed helped DeWolfe stand out. (Jonathan Newton/Washington Post)

learn the basics

Beginners start with a series of exercises before moving up to the barre. They must first learn to grip the bar near the top with their dominant hand. You will then undergo basic speed and strength training designed to build enough momentum to get you started.

Once they're ready to approach the hole, it's time to measure the length and speed of each step so they don't hesitate to jump.

A popular drill known as "One-Two-Three, Plant-Two-Three" breaks the last six stages of the vault into a carefully choreographed routine of placing the studs in the box and timing them to get started.

DeWolfe, who started pole vaulting a little over a year ago, came to the track as a multi-athlete looking for ways to stay in shape during home football season.

"When I started, it was a completely foreign concept," he says. “So you just need to get used to standing on the pole on day one. You are not even allowed to enter the hole. Just build confidence with the bar and start to understand how the movements work.

DeWolfe aimed at 15 feet. (Jonathan Newton/Washington Post) DeWolfe aimed at 15 feet. (Jonathan Newton/Washington Post)

Coming from lacrosse and football, where he was a catcher and outfielder, DeWolf did not have the typical build of a pole vaulter. At 6-foot-170 pounds, he was stronger and heavier than most outfielders. He learned to use this to his advantage to move faster on longer clubs with higher weight limits, often creating more feathers on the club and reaching new heights.

DeWolfe is considered a work in progress, but he placed second in last year's indoor VHSL competition, jumping 13 feet in just a few months.

"The hardest part is that you're really focused on your job, but once you start competing, your head just goes blank," says DeWolf. "It has to go directly to muscle memory."

Over the summer, DeWolf attended pole vault training camp with the Prince William County Pole Vaulters, a club made up of a network of high school coaches in Northern Virginia. He has now jumped 14½ feet and is shooting for his US personal best of 15 feet.

get the trick

For at least the last decade, the Northern Virginia team has become the dominant force in pole vaulting, thanks in large part to the pole vault program developed in Prince William County. In a sport based on complex processes, coaches' experience goes a long way in developing new talent, and athletes from Prince William County to Spotsylvania have attended summer programs to learn the game or take it to the next level.

"We train kids from all over the world," says program director Jerry McEvoy. “In fact, sometimes we're at a track meet and a kid comes up to us and says, 'I don't have a coach, can you help me?' ?' And we never deny a child.

McEvoy was an instructor at Osborne Park, where Rodríguez was one of his best students. McEvoy likens his job to building a Lego set: finding the right pieces for your crafting technique and removing the unnecessary ones to take them to the next level.

Rodriguez's success almost always comes from being 'on the same page' with his coach, but both agree that he sees great value in hearing multiple opinions about his technique.

"Sometimes when [McEvoy] is explaining something to me, I'm like, 'I know what you want me to do, but I just didn't approach it in a way that suited me,'" Rodriguez says. "Then another coach came in and interpreted it differently and all of a sudden his technique improved."

Pole vaulting is a matter of mentality for Rodríguez. It is a sport that can create great peaks by consistently reaching standards or setting deep highs or lows.

A cheerleader and former gymnast, Rodriguez began pole vaulting in the spring of her freshman year and immediately took off. But after several months of training, his progress stalled, forcing him to change his strategy and recalibrate his mindset.

"There were times when I cried during the competition," she said. "Your body isn't used to pole vaulting… You're not used to it. But to recover quickly, you have to get over it."

Rodriguez was diagnosed with autism early in his junior year and says understanding how his brain works has helped him develop a healthy approach to exercise.

He excelled at it, winning the indoor state title last season and finishing second in the outdoor championship last spring. He still breaks down each jump into a series of techniques (running, planting, turning, landing) to improve without aiming for a certain height. His personal best is 12 feet.

"Everything was organized and there was a step-by-step approach to do everything," Rodríguez said. "There are a lot of unpredictable sports, but in pole vaulting, because it's so technical and predictable, you can easily encapsulate the specific variables of the jump."

It also helps to have a coach who knows how to handle the ups and downs of the sport. McEvoy, who was named high school and club coach of the year at last month's National Bar Vault Summit, knows how to motivate and challenge athletes. After a series of difficult jumps, he has been known to ask "One more?" – then repeat the question at least five more times until the athlete can complete the routine with a good jump.

“I always tell the kids at the blackboard, 'Trust me; It's a good idea to stick to that plan," McEvoy said. "If somebody's having a bad day, then a really good day, then a really, really bad day, they're like, 'I hate this game, but I love it. game.'

"And all the coaches looked at each other and said, 'Now that's pole vaulting.'"

Google's Newsblocking Test In Canada A 'terrible Mistake', Says PM Trudeau

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday that Google's blocking of news content was a "huge mistake" for Alphabet Inc in the face of a government bill that would force the tech giant to pay Canadian publishers for news content.

This week, Google said it was testing a news block for some Canadian users in response to the Trudeau government's "Online News Act," which is about to become law.

Speaking to reporters in Toronto, Trudeau said the suppression of the news in Canada is something he "loves."

“I am very surprised that Google decided to block Canadians from accessing the news instead of paying journalists for their work.

"I think this is a big mistake and I know Canadians expect journalists to be well paid for their work."

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The "Online News Act," introduced by Trudeau's liberal government last year, lays down rules for platforms like Facebook and Google Meta to conduct business and pay news publishers.

Facebook has raised concerns about the law and warned that it may be forced to stop sharing news on its platform.

The law was passed by Canada's House of Commons in December and is currently in the unelected upper house of parliament, which rarely blocks laws passed by the lower house.

The rules are meant to help Canada's news industry, which is calling for regulation of tech companies, citing mounting financial losses as Facebook and Google grab more market share of online advertising revenue.

Ottawa's proposal is similar to a landmark Australian law passed in 2021 that prompted Google and Facebook to threaten to shut down their services. After both proposed some changes to the law, they finally signed agreements with Australian media companies.

Back In History: A Life With Computers

Back In History: A Life With Computers

We all have childhood dreams, but as we grow up, our perception of life and even our interests change.

This is exactly what happened to Susan Chang, who trained and worked as a nurse for several years, but started an IT company with her husband Alfred.

According to a Fiji Times article of 21 January 1984, he became manager of the Alpha Computer Center and his life thereafter revolved around marketing and training new computer operators.

"To learn more about computers, their applications and programming, it takes interest, patience and willingness to work," he said.

Initially, one of Susan's tasks was to study the workings of complex machines.

But the more he learned, the more exciting it became, he said.

The Alpha Computer Center opened in November 1982 at Vanua's home in Suva.

"It was difficult because people didn't know much about computers and those who knew thought the price was high because of the capabilities of the machines," said Susan, who was born in Malaysia.

Susan traveled to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide, Australia to complete a general nursing course through an Australian family volunteer supported program.

While studying in Adelaide, he met Alfred Fiji, who was on a scholarship to pursue an electrical engineering degree.

You got married in Australia. Susan said her husband graduated before her and worked for an electronics company. Before moving to Fiji in 1976, she and her husband visited family in Malaysia.

Alfred and his uncle founded Alpha Electronic Industries and bought the Commodore and Sirius computer trading agency in 1978.

Commodore was an American brand and controlled the South Pacific region with its headquarters in Sydney.

Susan followed her uncle Alfred when he moved to his father's farm in Kolo te Suva in 1980.

"I was sent to Commodore headquarters in Sydney to learn how to use the computer as a word processor."

After his return, Susan's important station was at the Bureau of Statistics, then at the Treasury.

He also worked with some schools that had computers. He taught students programming and all USP computers were provided by Alpha.

Slim and petite, Susan was an energetic businesswoman.

Manages office, travels to facilities to install computers and train operators.

His clients have included the South Pacific Educational Evaluation Commission, Fiji National Reserve Fund, Fiji International Telecommunications Ltd and many others.

He said Fiji Industries Ltd used Commodore to manage its accounts, while Data Service Centers Ltd in Nadi managed the accounts of about 60 companies on two computers.

Susan said that not every business needs a computer. It depended on the size of the company.

"If it's a big problem, computerize it, otherwise stick to the calculator and go to the manual."

In the same year, the Fiji Computer Society launched its first computer magazine at the Civic Centre.

The top ten IT companies showcased their innovative devices over two days.

Susan said it was great to see so many parents taking their children to the show as there were computers where children could play educational games.

"Our booth had both desktops and PCs, and I found that the PCs got more attention."

Detectives and hackers seem to be enjoying a renaissance right now, thanks in large part to Rian Johnson's projects like Glass Onion and Peacock's refreshing detective anthology Poker Face . But before there was Benoit Blanc or Charlie Cale, there was John Luthor, and Idris Elba had long hoped to bring the master detective to life on film. That time has finally arrived as Luthor. Fallen Sun will be available to Netflix subscribers on Friday, March 10, following a limited theatrical release beginning today, February 24. Fortunately, the reviews tell us if it was worth the wait.

Luthor ended in 2019 after five seasons. When Idris Elba returns as the character, he will be joined by newcomers Cynthia Eriva as Chief Inspector Odette Raine and Andy Serkis as serial killer David Robbie.
