What to do after you install the iOS 17.4 software update

iOS 17.4

Apple’s iOS 17.4 software update is coming this week, the update is either going to be released today or tomorrow and it will bring a range of new features to the iPhone, plus some major changes to the App Store and the ability to use alternative App Stores in Europe.

To ensure you harness the full potential of your updated device, there are several essential steps to follow post-update. Here is a great video from iReviews that delves into these recommendations, offering guidance on optimizing device functionality, ensuring security, and personalizing your user experience.

1. Navigate Beta Updates with Ease
If you’re part of the adventurous crowd that dabbles in beta versions, post-update is a good time to reassess your participation. iOS 17.4 beta users should consider disabling beta updates in their settings. This step ensures you only receive the stable versions moving forward, unless, of course, you’re keen on continuing to test out the newest features ahead of the broader audience.

2. Embrace Automatic Updates
For enhanced security and performance, turning on automatic updates is a smart move. This feature ensures your device receives the latest security patches and system file updates without manual intervention, keeping your device safeguarded against vulnerabilities.

3. Check for Carrier Updates
Don’t overlook the importance of carrier updates. Post iOS 17.4 installation, checking for any available updates from your carrier can significantly improve your network quality and reception. This step is often overlooked but can make a notable difference in your device’s connectivity.

4. Update Your Apps
To ensure seamless compatibility and optimal performance with iOS 17.4, updating all your apps is crucial. Enable automatic app updates for a hassle-free experience, ensuring your applications run smoothly on the new OS version.

5. Explore Siri’s Multilingual Capabilities
With iOS 17.4, Siri becomes more versatile, offering support for sending and reading messages in multiple languages. This enhancement is particularly beneficial for multilingual users, elevating the overall user experience by making interactions with Siri more natural and inclusive.

6. Express Yourself with New Emojis
Who doesn’t love new emojis? The iOS 17.4 update adds a plethora of new emojis, enabling you to express yourself in more diverse and fun ways. Dive into your emoji keyboard and discover the new additions that can add that extra flair to your messages.

7. Monitor Your Battery Health
After updating, it’s advisable to check your device’s battery health. The update process might recalibrate the battery health percentage, providing you with a more accurate reading. This insight is invaluable for assessing your battery’s longevity and planning any necessary maintenance.

8. Enhance Your Device Security
iOS 17.4 brings improvements to stolen device protection, offering options like requiring a security delay. This feature adds an extra layer of security, deterring unauthorized access and giving you peace of mind.

9. Personalize Your Home Screen
The introduction of a new digital clock widget for different cities allows for further customization of your home screen. Whether you’re a world traveler or enjoy keeping tabs on the time in various time zones, this widget adds both functionality and a personal touch to your device.

10. Review Your Privacy Settings
Privacy is paramount. Post-update, take the time to review your privacy settings, including app permissions for the camera, microphone, and location services. Ensuring these settings align with your privacy preferences is key to maintaining control over your personal data.

11. Don’t Forget to Backup Your Device
While ideally done before updating, backing up your device remains a crucial step. Safeguarding your personal data ensures that, in any event, you can restore your device without losing valuable information.

Navigating through these steps after installing iOS 17.4 not only enhances your device’s performance and security but also personalizes your experience to suit your preferences. Take the time to explore these recommendations, and enjoy the myriad of benefits that come with your updated iPhone.

Should You Update to iOS 17.3.1 (Video)

iOS 17.3.1

With every software update, iPhone users everywhere are faced with the quintessential digital age dilemma: to update or not to update. The iOS 17.3.1 update brings with it a mix of anticipation and skepticism, especially for those who have navigated the choppy waters of previous updates. If you are wondering how this update stacks up, especially in terms of performance, battery life, and bug resolutions, you will be pleased to know that we’ve delved deep into the latest iOS version to bring you a comprehensive analysis, coupled with user feedback and personal testing results. The video below from iDeviceHelp gives us some more details on the software.

Despite the update’s focus on squashing the text bug, it appears that not all gremlins have been banished. Wi-Fi instability and keyboard freezing issues continue to haunt a segment of users, indicating that the iOS 17.3.1 update, while helpful, is not a panacea for all the system’s ailments.

Feedback on battery performance has been mixed. Some users find their devices draining faster than a sinking ship, while others, including our testing, observed battery life on par with iOS 17.3. The device manages to last through the day, albeit with some struggle, hinting at no significant regression or improvement in this area.

For a subset of users, the update has not smoothed over all the rough edges. Wi-Fi connectivity and keyboard responsiveness remain inconsistent, a reminder that technology, as ever, is a work in progress.

There’s a silver lining for those already looking to the horizon. The iOS 17.4 beta, currently under testing on another device, shows promising signs of addressing not just the Wi-Fi and cellular service issues, but also improving keyboard functionality. This hints at a more comprehensive resolution in the pipeline, raising hopes for a smoother, more reliable user experience in future updates.

ASUSTOR Severe Vulnerability Detected – update Surveillance Center now

ASUSTOR Severe Vulnerability Detected - update Surveillance Center now

ASUSTOR has released an emergency update for its Surveillance Center software after discovering a severe vulnerability that could allow attackers to gain elevated privileges and execute malicious code on the ADM platform. The company has released an urgent security update for its Surveillance Center software, which is a critical move to address a serious vulnerability that could potentially allow cyber attackers to gain unauthorized access and control.

This vulnerability is particularly alarming because it could enable attackers to gain elevated privileges within the ADM platform, which is the core of ASUSTOR’s network storage systems. If this security gap were to be exploited, it could lead to the introduction of harmful code, resulting in malware infections that could compromise the integrity and security of the system.

The risk posed by this vulnerability cannot be overstated. It could allow for unauthorized manipulation of surveillance systems, leading to significant security breaches. ASUSTOR’s proactive release of the emergency update is a clear indication of the company’s commitment to protecting its users’ data from such threats.

ASUSTOR Severe Vulnerability Detected

To further enhance the security of your system, ASUSTOR recommends that users take several additional steps. First and foremost, it is crucial to update your passwords. Passwords should be strong and unique, avoiding simple combinations that can be easily guessed. A good password typically includes a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols, making it much harder for attackers to crack. ASUSTOR strongly recommends taking the following actions to ensure your data is secure:

  • Change your password.
  • Use a strong password.
  • Change default HTTP and HTTPS ports. Default ports are 8000 and 8001 respectively.
  • Turn off Terminal/SSH and SFTP services and other services you do not use.
  • Make regular backups and ensure backups are up to date.
  • Turn on and update snapshots if available.
  • Enable the AbuseIPDB risk detection greylist.

Another important security measure is to change the default HTTP and HTTPS ports. These ports, which are often set to 8000 and 8001, should be changed to less common numbers. This simple change can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access attempts, as it makes it more difficult for attackers to target your system.

Users should also consider disabling services that are not regularly used, such as Terminal/SSH and SFTP. These services can act as potential entry points for attackers if they are left enabled without proper security monitoring. By disabling them, you can close off these vulnerabilities and make your system more secure.

Update Surveillance Center

Regular backups are a cornerstone of data protection. It is essential to perform backups consistently and verify that they are up to date. In the event that your system is compromised, having a recent backup is invaluable for restoring your data quickly and efficiently.

Adding another layer of protection, ASUSTOR suggests implementing snapshots. Snapshots can capture the state of your system at specific intervals, which can be incredibly helpful for a speedy recovery process if your system encounters any issues.

Lastly, enabling the AbuseIPDB risk detection greylist can provide an additional layer of defense. This service helps to identify and block potential threats by cross-referencing a database of known malicious IP addresses. By using this service, you can prevent many known threats from ever reaching your system.

The emergency update from ASUSTOR is a critical response to a significant security threat. By following the company’s guidance on password security, port adjustments, service management, backup practices, snapshot maintenance, and risk detection, users can significantly enhance the security of their ADM platform. It is imperative for users to take immediate action to ensure the continued safety and reliability of their surveillance systems.
