Trying season 4 trailer shows cast ‘older not wiser’| Cult of Mac

Apple TV+ heralded the birth of a new season of popular family comedy Trying with a season 4 trailer Tuesday. It charmingly shows everyone getting older as the London family faces life’s little problems, including those adopted kids. After all, six years have passed in the story since season three’s action. They’re “older not wiser,” according to the show’s tagline.

The trailer is not exactly uncontrollably laughing-out-loud funny. But, like the show, its moments of wry humor will draw smiles and a chuckle or two. The fourth season debuts May 22 on Apple TV+.

Life’s little problems continue in Trying season 4 trailer

Apple TV+ said Tuesday the “beloved series” returns for season four’s eight episodes starting Wednesday, May 22, with the first two episodes. The show stars BAFTA Award nominee Esther Smith and SAG Award nominee Rafe Spall.

Here’s how the streamer describes the new season:

In this exciting new season, we fast-forward six years to discover that Nikki (Smith) and Jason (Spall) are experienced adopters having built a lovely little nuclear family, enriched by an extraordinary support network.

However, as their teenage daughter, Princess (Scarlett Rayner), starts to yearn for a connection with her birth mother, Nikki and Jason find themselves confronted with the ultimate test of their parenting skills.

And notably, the trailer and the show include new music:

The trailer features the brand new single from London-based pop star BEKA, titled “Forever.” BEKA helms this season’s soundtrack with original songs set to debut in each episode. She follows Maisie Peters and Bear’s Den who wrote and performed the soundtracks for Trying season two and season three, respectively.

New and returning cast members

In addition to Smith and Spall, the cast includes Sian Brooke and BAFTA Award winner Darren Boyd. The new season welcomes Rayner and Cooper Turner as cast members.

Andy Wolton created and executive produces the show. BAFTA Award nominee Josh Cole, Sam Pinnell and Chris Sussman also executive produce. BBC Studios produces the show.

‘Dark Matter’ trailer unveils a multiverse mystery

Dark Matter, one of the best sci-fi novels of the decade, is about to become an Apple TV+ series. It’s a thriller about a man lost in the multiverse trying to find his original universe, and stars Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly.

The trailer released Thursday asks the question “What if the person who abducted me is me?”

Dark Matter brings a bestseller to Apple TV+

Apple TV+ is building a reputation for brilliantly adapting popular sci-fi novels into series. Silo and Foundation are two excellent examples. Which is why there’s so much potential in the upcoming adaptation of Dark Matter, the bestselling novel by Blake Crouch.

For those who haven’t read the book, Apple’s description of its series says,

“Dark Matter is a story about the road not taken. The series follows Jason Dessen (played by Edgerton), a physicist, professor and family man who — one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago — is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.”

Top talent matters

The two lead actors in Dark Matter bring plenty of experience.

Joel Edgerton is quite famous in his home country of Australia, and is known around the world for playing Owen Lars in several Star Wars films and series.

Jennifer Connelly has had a long career dating back to Labyrinth in 1986. Other highlights include Mulholland Falls, Dark City and A Beautiful Mind — for which she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Also staring in the series are Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi and Oakes Fegley.

Coming toApple TV+ in May

Dark Matter will premiere globally on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on May 8. These will be followed by one new episode every Wednesday through June 26. There’ll be nine in total.

‘Morpho’ mystery deepens in The Big Door Prize season 2 trailer

The citizens of a small town called Deerfield continue to see their lives upended by a fortune-telling machine known as Morpho, according to the season 2 trailer Apple TV+ dropped Wednesday for philosophical comedy series The Big Door Prize.

Starring Emmy Award winner Chris O’Dowd, the well-liked comedy’s 10-episode second season debuts Wednesday, April 24, with three episodes.

The Big Door Prize remains a tantalizing mystery in season 2 trailer

In the first season of The Big Door Prize, a machine called Morpho mysteriously shows up in Deerfield grocery store. It issues cards to users stating their “life’s potential.” The townsfolk soon become obsessed over who they are and who they should be. And that obsession appears to deepen in the season 2 trailer.

Here’s how Apple TV+ describes season 2 of the show from Emmy Award-winning creator David West Read (Schitt’s Creek):

Based on M.O. Walsh’s novel, The Big Door Prize season two follows the residents of Deerfield as the Morpho machine readies them for the mysterious “next stage.” As everyone’s potentials are exchanged for visions, new relationships form and new questions are asked.

Dusty (Chris O’Dowd) and Cass (Gabrielle Dennis) decide to take time apart while Trina (Djouliet Amara) and Jacob (Sammy Fourlas) learn that they can shed their old labels. Giorgio (Josh Segarra) and Izzy (Crystal Fox) each find romance while Hana (Ally Maki) and Father Reuben (Damon Gupton) attempt to discover the purpose of the machine.

Residents of the small town are once again left questioning what they thought they knew about their lives, their relationships, their potential and the Morpho itself.

Cult of Mac’s reviewer seemed to like the first season of the show.

Ensemble cast welcomes newbies

The cast members mentioned above return to the show, produced by Skydance Television and CJ ENM/Studio Dragon, along with some other returning and new faces for season 2.

They include Justine Lupe, Aaron Roman Weiner, Mary Holland, Patrick Kerr, Cocoa Brown, Carrie Barrett, Elizabeth Hunter, Jim Meskimen, Matt Dellapina and Melissa Ponzio.

Jane tells its stories through a blend of live action and CGI effects. It won an Emmy Award for its first season’s visual effects, actually.

Apple TV+ described the second season of Jane teased in the fun new trailer this way:

The mission-driven series for kids and families is inspired by the work of world-renowned ethologist and conservationist, Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and a United Nations Messenger of Peace. From Emmy Award winner J.J. Johnson (Dino Dana, Endlings, Ghostwriter), Sinking Ship Entertainment and the Jane Goodall Institute, the new five-episode season of Jane premieres Friday, April 19.

Ava Louise Murchison (Reacher) stars as Jane Garcia, a 9-year-old budding environmentalist on a quest to save endangered animals. Using her powerful imagination, Jane takes her best friends David, played by Mason Blomberg (Shameless), and Greybeard the chimpanzee on epic adventures to help protect wild animals all around the world. Because, according to her idol Dr. Jane Goodall: “Only if we understand, will we care. Only if we care, will we help. Only if we help, can they be saved.”

And Goodall offered high praise shows like this one.

In addition to its Emmy, the show got praise in the Environmental Media Association Awards’ Children’s Television category.

Sugar detective series trailer offers clues to Colin Farrell’s story |

A new trailer Apple TV+ dropped Sunday for upcoming LA-noir detective series Sugar, starring Irish actor Colin Farrell, asks an important question: Who is John Sugar? Well, apparently he’s a tough dude who “does one thing and one thing only: Find the missing.”

A legendary film producer played by veteran actor James Cromwell says the line. And having cast members like Cromwell adds some serious gravitas to a moody and engrossing-looking series (as if Farrell was not enough).

You can see that trailer and the previous one below. They should whet your appetite for some good ol’ fashioned-yet-contemporary LA crime noir. It comes up from time to time to great acclaim (see LA Confidential among others).

The trailers for Sugar below don’t disappoint when it comes to note-perfect film noir dialogue, like you’d see in some James Cagney tough-guy detective series from the 1940s.

“Finding people that are lost — that part of the job I like,” Farrell’s narration says as he drives his convertible around Los Angeles after midight. “I’m really good at what I do. I don’t like hurting people [intercut brutal fight scenes]. But maybe I’ve been here too long. Tip the world on its side and everything loose lands in Los Angeles.”

‘Franklin’ trailer shows founding father’s perilous mission to France

A Benjamin Franklin docudrama coming soon to Apple TV+ will have the founding father taking on the dangerous task of convincing the king of France to financially support the American Revolution.

Legendary actor Michael Douglas has the title role of Franklin, a limited series premiering in April.

Apple TV+ Franklin docudrama will be thick with political intrigue

In 1776, Benjamin Franklin is sent to France to convince the monarch to underwrite America’s experiment in democracy. Against the odds he succeeds and [Spoiler alert] the fledgling United States wins the Revolutionary War.

As Apple TV+ says:

“At age 70, without any diplomatic training, Franklin convinced an absolute monarchy to underwrite America’s experiment in democracy. By virtue of his fame, charisma and ingenuity, Franklin outmaneuvered British spies, French informers and hostile colleagues to engineer the Franco-American Alliance of 1778 and the peace treaty with Great Britain in 1783.”

It is easy to picture Franklin’s mission to Paris as a bunch of men standing around discussing diplomacy, but the trailer for the Apple TV+ series emphasizes the intrigue and danger … because of course it does.

So much talent

Michael Douglas has over 50 years of acting experience. Among his many accolades are two Academy Awards and five Golden Globes.

The Apple TV+ series is based on the book A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America by Pulitzer Prize winner Stacy Schiff.  The adaptation was written by Kirk Ellis, who also wrote HBO’s John Adams, which was showered with awards.

The drama also stars Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place) as Temple Franklin, Thibault de Montalembert (Call My Agent!) as comte de Vergennes, Daniel Mays (Line of Duty) as Edward Bancroft, Ludivine Sagnier (Lupin) as Madame Brillon, Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan) as John Adams and Théodore Pellerin (There’s Someone Inside Your House) as Marquis de Lafayette.

The series was directed by Tim Van Patten (The Pacific, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire).

Coming to Apple TV+ in April

Franklin will premiere globally on Apple TV+ with the first three episodes on Friday, April 12. These will be followed by one new episode every Friday through mid May.

Multi-Emmy Award-winning star and executive producer Maya Rudolph returns with Loot season 2. She appears alongside returning cast members Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Nat Faxon, Ron Funches and Joel Kim Booster.

Loot season two kicks off a year after Molly Wells (Rudolph) settles her very public divorce from tech billionaire John Novak (Adam Scott), and we find her thriving in her role as the head of her philanthropic organization, the Wells Foundation. Focused mainly on her charity work, Molly has sworn off any new relationships with men and embarks on a wellness journey. Fabulously single but not particularly independent, Molly keeps her trusty assistant Nicholas (Booster) by her side. He diligently caters to her every whim … and occasionally feeds her a kale smoothie spiked with gin.

Sofia Salinas (Rodriguez), the no-nonsense executive director of the Wells Foundation, continues to run things with compassionate efficiency, but her all-business ethos is thrown for a loop when she meets Molly’s charismatic architect friend Isaac (O-T Fagbenle). The bromance between Howard (Funches) and Nicholas also continues to flourish as they support each other in their endeavors both inside and outside the workplace.

Meanwhile, Arthur (Faxon) has moved past his feelings for Molly and has adopted a new devil-may-care attitude on life, a change encapsulated by a very lame leather bracelet. The Wells Foundation team, including Rhonda (Meagen Fay) and Ainsley (Stephanie Styles), must pull together as co-workers and friends as Molly strives to publicly live up to her promise of giving away all of her vast fortune.

And while most of cast will be familiar to fans of the show, the new season brings new cast members, too. Guest stars include Benjamin Bratt, Ana Gasteyer and O-T Fagbenle, among others.

Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard created Loot and also write and executive produce it. Other executive producers include Rudolph, Danielle Renfrew Behrens, Dave Becky of 3 Arts and Natasha Lyonne. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, produces the show for Apple.

Loot season debuts with the first two episodes on Wednesday, April 3, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through May 29.
