Vivo overtakes Samsung in smartphone sales in India, but latter earned more revenue

[ad_1]

While Samsung’s smartphone market share improved in the US in the first quarter of this year, its sales have dropped in India. It sold fewer smartphones nationwide, allowing Vivo and Xiaomi to overtake it. However, there’s good news in terms of revenue. The company sold more higher-end phones and earned the most among all smartphone brands.

Samsung sells fewer smartphones than Vivo and Xiaomi in India in Q1 2024

Samsung dropped from the first rank to the third in terms of smartphone shipments in India during Q1 2024. Its market share was 17.5% compared to 20.3% a year ago. Vivo ranked first with a shipment market share of 19.2%, a jump from 17.5% in Q1 2024. Xiaomi ranked second with a market share of 18.8% in Q1 2024 compared to 15.9% in Q1 2023. OPPO ranked fourth with a 10.1% market share, while Realme ranked fifth with a 9.9% market share in smartphone shipments. However, the full picture shows that Samsung was in a comfortable position when it came to revenue.

Samsung had a 25% share of the smartphone market revenue in Q1 2024. Despite ranking third in unit shipments, Samsung earned more revenue than any other smartphone brand in India. Its revenue share increased from 23% in Q1 2023 to 25% in Q1 2024. According to the report, the South Korean firm’s smartphone average selling price (ASP) hovered around $425, much higher than all its Android rivals. Higher sales of the Galaxy S24 (compared to Galaxy S23 sales from last year) helped it achieve that feat.

Watch our review of the Galaxy S24 in the video below.

Counterpoint Research reveals that smartphones priced more than INR 30,000 ($360) accounted for 20% of all smartphones shipped in India. Those 20% of phones (priced above INR 30,000) accounted for 51% of the revenue generated by the Indian smartphone market. According to the research firm’s survey, over 33% of mid-range smartphone users in India want to upgrade to a higher-end phone.

Apple also performed impressively. Despite not being ranked in the top five smartphone makers in terms of shipments, Apple earned the second-highest revenue in India. The iPhone maker earned 19% of the revenues, but that has dropped from 22% of revenue from Q1 2023. The research firm expects the Indian smartphone market to grow in single digits for the rest of the year, and good times are ahead.

Nothing grew 144% year-over-year, thanks to its new mid-range phone. Mot0rola’s shipments rose by 58% due to its smartphones’ stock Android experience and the value-for-money factor. Over half (53%) of smartphones sold in India used MediaTek processors, while 35% of phones sold in the country used Qualcomm Snapdragon chips.

Samsung smartphone sales rise in the US in Q1 2024, thanks to Galaxy S24

[ad_1]

The Galaxy S24 has brought good fortune to Samsung. After launching earlier this year, it has helped Samsung improve its revenue and profits. It has been revealed that Samsung’s smartphone sales have increased in the US at the expense of Google and TCL.

Sales of Galaxy smartphone sales improved in the USA in Q1 2024

Counterpoint Research’s report states that Samsung’s smartphone market share in the first quarter of this year was 31%. That’s a 14% rise compared to its numbers from Q1 2023 when the company’s market share was 27%. That rise seems to have come at the expense of Google’s and TCL’s shipments. Its market share reached a four-year-high after 2020. Despite this increase in sales, Samsung was still the second-biggest smartphone brand.

Samsung Smartphone Sales Market Share USA Q1 2024

Apple was the biggest smartphone brand in the US during the quarter. It had a market share of 52%, similar to its figures from last year. That’s impressive, and it seems that the launch of the Galaxy S24 didn’t affect Apple. It is possible that iPhone users are staying with Apple and not crossing the line to Android. This is good news for Samsung, as more people are buying its high-end phones like the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

You can watch our review of the Galaxy S24 Ultra in the video below.

Overall, smartphone shipments declined by 8% during the year’s first quarter. Smartphone sales were quite good in Q1 2023 following the COVID-19 slump. Still, one good news is that people seem to favor buying pricier smartphones.

Senior Analyst Maurice Klaehne said, “A bright spot in the market was Samsung, which grew shipments YoY with the earlier launch of the S24 series. It was Samsung’s best Q1 in four years as the brand grew its market share to 31%, the highest since Q1 2020. There was strong demand from older Samsung users looking to upgrade to a new device.

iPhone Sales in China Dropped Significantly in Q1 2024

[ad_1]

iPhone sales in China declined significantly in the first quarter of 2024 as consumers turned to other premium smartphone brands, according to Counterpoint research.

iphone 15 series store
During the first quarter of the year, China’s smartphone market experienced modest year-over-year growth of 1.5%, marking the second consecutive quarter of growth. This uptick in sales is largely attributed to strong sales performance from local manufacturers such as Huawei, which achieved a remarkable 69.7% growth compared to the same period last year. This growth was fueled by the launch of Huawei’s Mate 60 series, a smartphone lineup that has significantly bolstered the company’s dominance in the Chinese premium segment, typically characterized by devices priced over $600.

In contrast, Apple saw its smartphone sales in China plummet by 19.1% year-over-year in the same quarter. Analysts point to Huawei’s resurgence as a direct challenge to Apple as the main reason for this, primarily in the premium segment where the two companies compete head-to-head. Counterpoint anticipates that upcoming ‌iPhone‌ models with new color options and AI features could help to rejuvenate Apple’s sales in the Chinese market. Looking ahead, the smartphone market in China is projected to see low single-digit growth throughout 2024.

Playdate developers have made more than $500K in Catalog sales

[ad_1]

Panic is celebrating Playdate’s second birthday this month, and the party favors include some piping-hot statistics about Catalog game sales.

Playdate hit the market in April 2022 with 24 free games. Its Catalog store went live in March 2023, offering 16 curated games for purchase directly on the device. Panic has added more titles to Catalog on a bi-weekly basis for the past year, and the marketplace today has 181 games and apps. More than 150,000 games have been sold on Catalog, giving developers $544,290 in gross revenue — that’s after taxes, processing fees and Panic’s 25 percent cut.

Playdate two-year dataPlaydate two-year data

Panic

The average price of a Playdate Catalog game is $5.36. The average install size is 5.03MB, while the smallest Catalog game is 30.1KB and the largest is 107MB. Playdate ships with 4GB of flash storage. It also has 16GB of RAM, an accelerometer, a 400 x 240 1-bit display, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities, a mono speaker, and a condenser mic and stereo headphone jack. Oh, and it has a delightful little crank.

The figures Panic shared today cover Catalog purchases, which means they only tell part of the story. While Catalog has just under 200 titles, there are more than 800 Playdate games and apps available on itch.io alone, and the community there is active and vibrant. As I described in our Playdate retrospective published last week, browsing the device’s itch.io page feels like “hanging out in a friendly underground clubhouse populated by crank-obsessed video game freaks.” But, like, in a great way.

Playdate supports games from new and veteran developers, and some of its most notable titles include Mars After Midnight by Lucas Pope, Crankin’s Time Travel Adventure from Keita Takahashi’s studio uvula and Zipper by Bennett Foddy. Some of my personal favorites include Root Bear, Spellcorked, Word Trip, Chopter Copter and Pocket Pets.

This is the first time Panic has publicly shared data about Playdate game sales or its revenue-share model. The 25 percent cut that Panic takes is less than the standard set by Steam, which gets 30 percent of most game sales, but it’s more than split on the Epic Games Store, which reserves 12 percent for Epic.

Playdate costs $199 and there’s an optional teal cover available for $30. Panic has also been teasing the Stereo Dock — an adorable Playdate charging station, Bluetooth speaker and pen holder — for more than two years, but the accessory is still “coming soon.” There’s no word on a price or release window for the Stereo Dock, but Playdate Project Lead Greg Maletic recently told Engadget to expect an update in the coming months.

“We apologize to everyone with a Playdate who has been waiting patiently for the Stereo Dock; it’s been a trickier project than we anticipated and we had a few false starts,” Maletic said. “We thought we’d save some time on that project by having our factory do the software for the Stereo Dock, but we’ve learned that you don’t always necessarily want that in some cases. The Stereo Dock is very much alive, we have the physical prototypes to prove it! We expect to have a formal update on when you can buy one later this year.”

Panic

More than 70,000 Playdates have been sold in the past two years and a little more than half of all owners have purchased a Catalog game, according to Panic.

Epic Games to Charge 12% Fee for App Sales From Alternative iPhone Store

[ad_1]

Epic Games in February said that it would launch an Epic Games Store on the iPhone in the European Union, and today the company held an event at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) to provide additional information on the upcoming store debut and the fees that it will charge for apps distributed through its marketplace (via 9to5Mac).

epic games store ios
For games distributed through the ‌Epic Games‌ Store, Epic will collect a 12 percent share of revenue, which is the same fee that it charges on Windows and Mac machines. Apps will get 100 percent of the revenue they earn for the first six months, with Epic taking no cut, and there are no fees for apps that offer in-game purchases and use their own payment processing method.

A game sold through the ‌Epic Games‌ Store will need to pay both Epic’s 12 percent fee, and Apple’s 0.50 euro Core Technology Fee (CTF) for each “first annual” install after one million installs. Apps distributed through the App Store under Apple’s updated EU business terms will pay the CTF and a commission of 10 to 17 percent, down from the standard 15 to 30 percent cut that Apple takes.

‌App Store‌ apps making under $1 million annually will pay 10 percent under the ‌App Store‌ Small Business Program, and that’s also the fee that Apple charges for subscriptions that customers keep for over a year. More successful apps earning over $1 million and new subscriptions are subject to a 17 percent fee. Note that Apple also charges an additional three percent fee for using the in-app purchase payment system, so developers who distribute through the ‌App Store‌ and use in-app purchases will pay 13 to 20 percent.

As an example, an app with fewer than one million downloads that is distributed through the ‌App Store‌ under the new business terms would pay the CTF and 10 percent fee, a total ultimately lower than the CTF + 12 percent fee that the ‌Epic Games‌ Store would collect.

‌Epic Games‌ CEO Tim Sweeney has called Apple’s EU changes and fees a “devious new instance of Malicious Compliance” and has promised that ‌Epic Games‌ will continue to “argue to the courts and regulators that Apple is breaking the law” even as it prepares to launch the ‌Epic Games‌ Store.

The ‌Epic Games‌ Store is set to come to the ‌iPhone‌ in the European Union before the end of 2024. It will not be available in the United States and other countries.

My favorite Xbox and PC controller has received a chunky discount in Amazon’s spring sales

[ad_1]

The springtime sales are coming good for gaming peripherals and deals and one of my absolute favorite Xbox and PC controllers is discounted right now. The Thrustmaster eSwap X Pro controller is down a near-record-low price of $134.99 at Amazon in the US (was $169.99) – it’s the lowest price since for a good few months and since the holidays!

• Shop all Amazon Spring Sale deals

This is a superb saving of more than 20% on a premium PC controller, that also offers new ways to play games due to its modular design. I have a soft spot for it as it was the first controller I could use on an Xbox console – the modules allowed me to change it to a symmetrical layout and thus I finally had an Xbox controller that played nice with my hands. It’s around three years since it first came out, but with a newer version also coming out recently in the form of the Thrustmaster eSwap X2, we’re likely to enjoy price cuts on the eSwap X Pro while stock remains at retailers. This is such a price cut, and marks an ideal time to adopt the pro controller and take your gaming up a notch.

Not in the US? Scroll down for the best deals in your region. And if you’re after more deals this month, check out our full Amazon Spring Sale hub.

Today’s best Thrustmaster controller deal

On top of the modularity, this is a premium Xbox and PC pro controller more broadly – and certainly still holds up in the face of its slightly newer brethren that;’s come out recently. The eSwap X Pro offers changeable triggers, remappable back buttons, super-satisfyingly clicky shoulder and face buttons, ultra-responsive sticks, and a robust design. It is wired, but the 9.8ft / 3m cable should be long enough for most setups.

Better Samsung Galaxy S24 sales is a result of higher Galaxy S24+ demand

[ad_1]

Samsung received a good response for its latest flagship smartphone lineup, the Galaxy S24. The Galaxy S24 broke pre-order records in key markets and achieved double-digit sales growth. Those higher sales could be attributed to higher demand for the Galaxy S24+, at least according to a new report.

Galaxy S24+ sales are 53% higher than Galaxy S23+

A report from market analysis firm Counterpoint Research reveals that the sales of the Galaxy S24 series were 8% higher than the Galaxy S23 series globally during the first three weeks. It shows a detailed sales comparison of all Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S24 models. The sales of the Galaxy S24+ were 53% higher than the Galaxy S23+ during the same three-week period.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Sales vs Galaxy S23 Globally First Three Weeks Counterpoint Research

The Galaxy S24+ accounted for 21% of the overall sales of the Galaxy S24 series, compared to just 15% of all Galaxy S23 series sales. The demand for the base version of the Galaxy S24 also increased compared to the base Galaxy S23. The Galaxy S24 sales have been 4% higher than the base Galaxy S23.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s total sales were 1% lower than those of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, accounting for 52% of all sales of the Galaxy S24 series.

Galaxy S24+ brought very good upgrades

Watch our Galaxy S24+ review in the video above.

This year, Samsung brought many upgrades to the Galaxy S24+. While maintaining its slim form factor, the Galaxy S24+ brought a bigger, upgraded 6.7-inch screen with QHD+ resolution and a 2,600 nits peak screen brightness. It also received a much bigger battery, at 4,900mAh, which is almost as good as the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s 5,000mAh battery.

It also received the option for 12GB of RAM, 50% higher than 8GB RAM on the Galaxy S23+. A bigger, brighter, and sharper screen, a bigger battery, and higher RAM may have attracted many people who don’t want to spend a lot on the Galaxy S24 Ultra or want a more compact or comfortable phone.
