The iPad Pro and iPad Air models that Apple introduced today continue to offer the same 10 hours of battery life that Apple has advertised with iPads for years now, despite the addition of new, more efficient chips.

Apple’s ‌iPad Pro‌ has an M4 chip that is built on second-generation 3-nanometer technology, and it has six efficiency cores, or two more than the M2. The device is also equipped with a more efficient OLED display, but neither the chip nor the OLED display have resulted in additional battery life.

The 11-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ has a 31.29-watt-hour battery, up from 28.65‐watt‐hours in the prior-generation model, while the 13-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ has a 38.99-watt-hour battery, down from 40.88-watt-hours.

As for the ‌iPad Air‌, the 11-inch model has a 28.93‐watt‐hour, up slightly from the 28.6-watt-hour battery that was in the prior 10.9-inch version. The new 13-inch model has a 36.59‐watt‐hour battery.

Apple says that the ‌iPad Pro‌ and ‌iPad Air‌ models last for up to 10 hours when surfing the web on Wi-Fi or watching video, but that drops to nine hours when surfing the web using a cellular data network.

Apple is providing a live video stream on its website, on YouTube, and in the company’s TV app across various platforms. It’s finally time for the iPad to shine. After a long break between updates, Apple‘s iPad lineup looks like it will get more than a major update and design refresh during the May 7 ‘Let Loose’ Event. It could improbably be the showcase for the newest piece of Apple Silicon and Apple’s Generative AI strategy.

There’s much about this May 2024 Apple iPad Event that’s unusual. First, it’s being held early in the morning on May 7, starting at 7 AM PT in Apple’s hometown of California. Apple usually starts events hours later in the morning, Pacific time.

Second, it’s a virtual event but Apple is calling this, what I expect to be a pre-taped video presentation, a ‘Keynote.’ Keynotes are usually the first speech in a bigger, ongoing event. To my knowledge, there’s nothing ongoing beyond whatever Apple CEO Tim Cook and his cohorts deliver in what is expected to be a 35-minute presentation, according to reliable leaker Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) is now just a little more than a month away, but Apple has apparently chosen this iPad event to reveal a new piece of Apple Silicon: the M4 Chip.

But wait, it gets weirder.

Most rumors put that new M4 inside Apple’s anticipated, high-end iPad Pro 12.4 inch tablet (just one of multiple, anticipated new iPads that includes a pair of new iPad Air tablets).

Typically, Apple introduces Apple Silicon updates in its popular Mac line. The Apple M3 chip showed up in the iMac, MacBook Pro 14, and then the excellent MacBook Air 13 earlier this year. Similarly, the MacBook Air, Mini, and MacBook Pro launched with various flavors of the OG Apple M1 in 2020 before that Apple Silicon showed up in the iPad Pro in 2021, then the following year on the iPad Air.

That’s not all. There are indications that Apple could preview its AI approach on the iPad Pro, a fair assumption since most believe Apple is cooking up on-device Generative AI via the anticipated M4 chip.

Perhaps this will be just a glimpse. Seriously, how much would Apple share about the AI strategy with its developers’ conference so soon, in just over a month? No matter what Apple shows on the iPad, Tim Cook recently made it clear that Apple’s AI intentions scale way beyond a single device. As he told investors last week on the Apple earning’s call, “We see generative AI as a very key opportunity across our products and believe that we have advantages that set us apart there.”

Apple Generative AI is not just an iPad, Mac, or iPhone play. It’s potentially a broad and strategic shift in focus that will underpin the Apple ecosystem.

But let’s go back to Tuesday’s Apple Event.

Getting out ahead of the competition

If all these things are true, Apple is suddenly pulling the iPad firmly back into the spotlight, entrusting it with launching its latest custom CPU and Apple AI. It’s a big vote of confidence and a lot of responsibility for a somewhat ignored product category that has, at least on the sales side, floundered a bit in recent years.

Speaking of which, Apple also promised in the earnings call that iPad sales would see double-digit growth in the next quarter. That’s likely confirmation that this is an iPad event, and that Apple will offer more than just a lightweight update.

While I’m surprised that Apple is introducing new chips and AI features to the product line in a somewhat backward fashion, it also makes sense. Between now and WWDC 2024, both Microsoft and Google will hold major events, Microsoft Build and Google I/O, which should tell us a lot about their ongoing Generative AI efforts. Those companies have a huge head start on Apple.

In addition, Microsoft is expected to launch new Surface tablets with Qualcomm chips, like the Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite. These mobile CPUs are notable, according to Qualcomm, for their efficiency and performance, especially in AI tasks. Qualcomm is already claiming that its chips beat Apple’s M3.

The best way for Apple to steal the thunder from Qualcomm, Microsoft, and Google is to pre-announced an AI-sporting Apple M4 and show off just a bit of its Apple AI before the first Qualcomm system ships, before Microsoft reveals big Copilot updates for Windows 12, and before Google impresses us with even more Gemini tricks.

Seen through that light, Apple’s rumored plans aren’t that surprising at all. The iPad gets an elevated push that sets it up for a strong 2024, Apple fans and potential switchers see yet another generational performance leap in the M4, and we finally learn how Apple plans to rule the AI-obsessed world.

Apple has told us it’s going to be launching something new on May 7, and all the signs point to that something being new iPads. Now a new report lists the specific models and accessories we’ll be getting introduced to on Tuesday.

This report comes from well-known Apple tipster Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, and it rounds up some of the rumors we’ve already been hearing. Gurman says we’ll get a new pair of iPad Pro models: the 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes will be the same as the current iPad Pros, but they’ll be the first Apple tablets to switch to OLED.

They “may” run on M4 chips Gurman says, something which we’ve heard before. That would help distinguish them from the updated iPad Air, apparently arriving in 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch sizes – that larger size would be a first for the iPad Air, so we’d have two versions of both the Pro and Air models.

The M2 chip is the one most likely to be in the 2024 iPad Air, Gurman says. As you’ll see from our iPad Air 5 review, it was fitted with an M1 chip. The report also predicts that some AI features will be “teased” ahead of a full unveiling at WWDC on June 10.

As for accessories, Gurman states that we’ll get a new Apple Pencil with haptic feedback, and a new Magic Keyboard that will “make the iPad look more laptop-like”. We’ve previously been told by the same source to expect these extras alongside the iPads.

While a new entry-level iPad and a new iPad mini are being worked on, they apparently won’t be shown off on Tuesday. Apple is working to make its 11th-generation iPad significantly cheaper than its 10th-generation iPad, the report says.

A few more tidbits: according to Gurman, the event is starting earlier than normal (May 7 at 7am PT / 10am ET / 3pm BST, and on May 8 at 12am AEST) so people in China can watch along, and will last “a little more than half an hour”.

It’ll be the first time Apple has refreshed its iPad models since 2022, so Tim Cook and the other Apple execs will be hoping there’s some pent up demand for these tablets. If you want to see everything as it happens, here’s how to watch along.

Ubisoft today announced that Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be available in the App Store starting June 6 for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, as well as iPad Air and iPad Pro models equipped with the M1 chip or newer.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage can now be pre-ordered on the App Store. The game will be free to play for 90 minutes, and users will be able to unlock the full version across compatible iPhone and iPad models with a single $49.99 in-app purchase.

Ubisoft says the iPhone and iPad versions of Assassin’s Creed Mirage offer the same experience as the console version, but with touch-based controls.

The game’s description in the App Store:

In Assassin’s Creed® Mirage, you are Basim, a cunning street thief with nightmarish visions, seeking answers and justice. After an act of deadly retribution, Basim flees Baghdad and joins an ancient organization – The Hidden Ones. Assassin’s Creed Mirage was first released for Xbox, PlayStation, and Windows in October.

With the A17 Pro chip, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max support hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading, allowing for improved graphics rendering in games. This hardware upgrade has allowed for more AAA games on the iPhone, such as multiple Resident Evil titles and Death Stranding Director’s Cut.

Apple Announces ‘Let Loose’ Event on May 7

Apple this week announced that it will be holding its first event of the year on Tuesday, May 7, at 7 a.m. Pacific Time (10 a.m. Eastern Time). During the event, Apple is expected to unveil new iPad Pro and iPad Air models, along with updated Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard accessories. As always, there could be other surprises in store too.

Tim Cook Hints at New Apple Pencil

Just moments after Apple announced its “Let Loose” event taking place on May 7, Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted at a new Apple Pencil.

“Pencil us in for May 7,” said Cook, in a post shared on social media platform X.

The next-generation Apple Pencil is rumored to feature a new “squeeze” gesture for certain actions, and it may support Apple’s Vision Pro headset starting with visionOS 2 later this year.

Apple is finally planning a Calculator app for the iPad, over 14 years after launching the device, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Apple Seeds Third Beta of iOS 17.5 to Developers

Apple this week made the third betas of iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 available to developers and members of its public beta program for testing.

FineWoven Accessories May Get One Last Outing Before Apple Pulls Plug

A leaker this week claimed that Apple had stopped production of FineWoven accessories following poor reviews from customers, but they later said that Apple may offer the accessories in one final set of new colors before discontinuing them for good.

The original iPad was important enough to get its own live on-stage introduction by the late Steve Jobs. It was such a revolutionary idea that it predates the iPhone and we might’ve been using Apple‘s first tablet in 2007 if Steve Jobs hadn’t steered the technology to a pocketable format.

After the January 27, 2010 launch, the world, for a time, seemed to revolve around Apple’s iPad, a silicon, glass, and metal gadget so ground-breaking it rated its own storyline on the then wildly popular Modern Family TV series (it was really like a 22-minute ad with a lot of jokes).

It’s a different story for the iPads we’re expecting on May 7. Instead of a big, breathless live event, Apple will launch the tablets (and probably a new Apple Pencil) virtually. That means a pre-taped, Apple CEO Tim Cook-hosted affair that will breeze through four or more new gadgets with deep dives into the new screen technology (OLED?), new designs (thinner than ever!), wireless charging (oh, please make this so), and a completely reimagined Apple Pencil.

It’ll be exciting, in a way, but also anti-climactic.

The first and best true tablet

14 years ago, I sat in the audience as Steve Jobs explained his vision for a post-PC world and the need for a device that sat between the then-popular Netbook laptops and its own wildly successful iPhone. Jobs didn’t just explain this: behind him, the word “iPad” dramatically materialized between a netbook and an iPhone.

Jobs, a tiny figure before the screen, held up the iPad to wild applause.

From that point forward, Jobs dove into the demo, showing us photos, maps, newspapers, and apps on the 9.7-inch iOS screen (there was no iPadOS back then). As radical as the iPad introduction appeared, Jobs knew that we already understood the product. Since there are 75 million iPhones and iPods sold, there are, said Jobs, “over 75 million people who already know how to use the iPad.”

Like the showman he was, Jobs didn’t hold back on hyperbole, declaring, “Our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary product at an unbelievable price.” Much like the iPhone before it, the iPad started at a relatively affordable $499 and has only gotten more expensive since then.

A new era

Months later at the AllThingsD conference, Jobs said, “PCs are going to be like trucks. They are still going to be around [but] one out of x people will need them.” Later he added, “We like to talk about the post-PC era, but when it really starts to happen, it’s uncomfortable.”

I praised Jobs as an “oracle,” and the numbers backed him up. By 2011, Apple was reporting 15 million iPads sold and owned 90% of the tablet market share.

Job, though, was wrong and, in the intervening years, the iPad seen diminishing sales and has twisted itself through iPadOS updates and keyboard accessories into another ultra-computer option. It’s a tablet but also a personal computer or “PC”. There is no post-PC world, just a world of laptops and tablets that are racing toward the middle.

While the iPad has, with the Magic Keyboard and mouse support, become more laptop-like, traditional Windows laptops have adopted tablet features like touchscreens and stylus support.

The question for this next generation of iPads is whether they will further blur the line between PCs and tablets or reestablish the distinction. It was a self-contained slab that could do it all, without accessories

Aside from describing access to a full-size virtual keyboard (and, yes, a hardware keyboard that was almost unusable because it positioned the iPad just millimeters away from the top row of keys), Steve Jobs in 2010 illustrated how you could accomplish myriad entertainment, content, and productivity task through a touch screen. He positioned the original iPad as the best book and newspaper reader (The New York Times was a launch-day partner) but also a fantastic gaming platform. It could be your word processor and your spreadsheet manager. It was lighter than a Netbook but far prettier and a lot more fun to use.

Is it a PC?

Today’s iPad, iPad Mini, and especially iPad Pro are laptops in tablet’s clothing. With Apple Silicon (up to the M2 in the iPad Pro), they match the performance of last-generation MacBook Airs. The new models will surely feature M3 chips.

I’m not sorry the post-PC idea is dead. When Jobs floated it, I worked at a publication with “PC” in the name. I also knew consumers might not care so much about such technology labels. They loved the original iPad because it did so many things that a device of that form factor had never done (at least well) before. It satisfied their cravings for content and entertainment and, to their surprise, was built to last.

Apple iPads sold 8 or 9 years ago are still working, which is of course part of the problem. You can’t be Post-anything if the products last forever.

For the iPad line, the potential to alter the trajectory of computing is gone but the opportunity to reestablish its place in the mobile technology market remains. Let’s see if Apple chooses a new path.

Apple has announced it will be holding a special event on Tuesday, May 7 at 7 a.m. Pacific Time (10 a.m. Eastern Time), with a live stream to be available on Apple.com and on YouTube as usual. The event invitation has a tagline of “Let Loose” and shows an artistic render of an Apple Pencil, suggesting that iPads will be a focus of the event.

During the event, Apple is expected to announce new iPad Pro and iPad Air models, along with updated Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard accessories.

Here is everything that has been rumored:

Two new iPad Pro models with the M3 chip, OLED displays, a thinner enclosure, thinner bezels, a matte screen option, a landscape-oriented front camera, other design changes, and possibly MagSafe wireless charging.
Two new iPad Air models with the M2 chip and a landscape-oriented front camera, including a first-ever 12.9-inch iPad Air with a mini-LED display.
A new Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro with an aluminum enclosure, larger trackpad, and other design tweaks.
A new Apple Pencil, which may have a new “squeeze” gesture for certain actions and support visionOS eventually.

Apple has not released any new iPads since late 2022, so this event has been a long time coming.

Macs to Get AI-Focused M4 Chips Starting in Late 2024

Apple plans to release its first Macs with the M4 series of chips in late 2024, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

The report says that the MacBook Pro and iMac lines will be the first to be updated with the M4 series of chips later this year, while other models like the MacBook Air, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro are expected to be updated with M4 series chips throughout 2025.

Gurman said the chips are “designed to highlight artificial intelligence” capabilities on the Mac.

New iPads Likely to Launch During Second Week of May

In the latest edition of his newsletter, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said new iPad Pro and iPad Air models will likely launch during the second week of May, following reported manufacturing delays.

He also said Apple is working on new iPad mini and entry-level iPad models, but he does not expect those devices to launch until later this year.

It has been nearly 18 months since Apple last released new iPads.

Apple is “unlikely” to hold an event to announce new iPad Pro and iPad Air models, according to sources cited by Taiwanese supply chain publication DigiTimes.

Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman already said Apple was not planning to hold an event for the new iPads, but he made this claim back in early March, before it was reported that the devices were postponed due to manufacturing delays. With the new iPads now expected to launch in early May, DigiTimes believes Apple is still not planning to hold an event.

Instead of an event, it is likely that Apple will announce the new iPads in a press release shared on its website, as it did for the MacBook Air models with the M3 chip in early March. Gurman believes Apple will announce the new iPads by the second week of May, barring any further delays due to production challenges.

Gurman said two factors contributing to the new iPads being delayed were Apple still finishing iPadOS software development for the new iPads, and advanced manufacturing techniques for the OLED displays that the devices will use.
