In the last five days, Helldivers 2 was removed from the PC market in 177 countries and the game’s Steam reviews collapsed under the weight of more than 200,000 negative ratings, dropping from Positive to Mixed. It’s now Tuesday and the Helldivers 2 Steam page is overrun with people ranting against Sony and celebrating democracy, and for anyone taking their first glance at the game, it’s all a bit confusing.
Here’s what’s going on.
Helldivers 2 is a third-person co-op shooter developed by independent team Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It went live on PlayStation 5 and Steam on February 8, marking a rare instance of cross-platform parity from Sony. Immediately, Helldivers 2 was a hit on PC — it clocked more concurrent players on Steam than any other PlayStation game, beating God of War, Spider-Man Remastered, Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us Part I. Helldivers 2 was so popular in its first few weeks that Arrowhead’s servers had trouble meeting demand and had to be capped at 450,000 players.
“I am completely exhausted by the success,” Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt tweeted one week post-launch. “So is the team, many, many late nights, on-calls, emergency meetings, discussions around server capacity, shards, capacity units, CPU utilization, login rates and CCU. Tired, but very, very pleased.”
Sony Interactive Entertainment
Helldivers 2 is one of the first tests of Sony’s long-term multiplatform goals. While Pilestedt was taking stock of Helldivers 2’s launch week, Sony executives were telling investors about their fresh plans to aggressively chase revenue streams on PC. Sony president Hiroki Totoki said the objective was to “proactively work on” releasing first-party games on PC alongside PlayStation, a shift from the company’s longstanding console-first approach.
Helldivers 2 isn’t a first-party Sony game, but it’s console-exclusive to PlayStation 5 and Sony has been supporting its development as its publisher. As long as Helldivers 2 has had a Steam page, it’s also had a dijon-yellow notification box alerting players that they’ll need to link up a PlayStation Network account in order to play. According to Sony, account linking is all in the name of security and cross-platform play, but of course it also helps boost the studio’s PSN monthly active user numbers.
Due to the game’s early network issues, Sony decided to postpone the account-linking requirement when Helldivers 2 went live on Steam on February 8. It hit the digital PC storefront for $40 with no notable region or account-linkage restrictions. For nearly three months, Helldivers 2 had its moment in the sun.
And then it started to burn. On Thursday, May 2, Sony announced that all Helldivers 2 Steam players would be required to log into their PSN accounts in order to continue accessing the game on PC. The requirement would go live for new players on May 6, and existing players would start seeing a mandatory login prompt at the end of the month.
“Due to technical issues at the launch of Helldivers 2, we allowed the linking requirements for Steam accounts to a PlayStation Network account to be temporarily optional,” Sony’s announcement said. “That grace period will now expire.”
Usually this wouldn’t be a massive issue, since PSN accounts are free and it’s relatively painless to link one to Steam. However, Helldivers 2 had been sold around the world, and PSN is only available in 73 countries. That would leave well over 100 countries and territories in the lurch, with those players unable to play a game they’d already paid for. Refunds were also out of the question for most players — especially the most dedicated ones — since Steam generally limits those to games that’ve been played for less than two hours. The bad reviews started pouring in.
Sony Interactive Entertainment
Neither Arrowhead nor Sony seemed to know what to do next. Sony published an FAQ in the Helldivers 2 Discord that didn’t offer solutions, and instead seemed to advise affected players to create PSN accounts in different countries, a violation of the platform’s terms. It became readily apparent through tweets and Discord updates that while Sony was the driving force behind the PSN requirement, Arrowhead developers kind of hated it. They even encouraged the review riot.
“I want people to make their displeasure known in a place where it might actually make a difference, Steam reviews and refund requests will do that, angry posting in the Discord won’t,” Arrowhead associate community manager Spitz posted in the game’s Discord server on Friday. “I’m not happy about this decision either.”
Over the weekend, more than 200,000 people posted negative reviews of Helldivers 2 on Steam, tanking its overall rating. On Sunday, May 5, Sony silently removed Helldivers 2 from Steam in 177 countries and territories that don’t have access to PSN.
That same day, Arrowhead CEO Pilestedt tweeted, “We are talking solutions with PlayStation, especially for non-PSN countries. Your voice has been heard, and I am doing everything I can to speak for the community — but I don’t have the final say.”
Sony Interactive Entertainment
On May 6, the day the PSN requirement was set to go live for new players, Sony backtracked. The company tweeted that its account-linking plans would “not be moving forward.” The message continued, “We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans.”
Helldivers 2 is now playable in every region that has Steam, with the option to link a PSN account. Notably, it’s not purchasable in the countries that were blocked by Sony on May 5. Still, the game’s PC review score is slowly recovering as the rioters return to adjust their rankings, now alongside cheeky messages about the power of democracy.
On Monday, Pilestedt quoted Sony’s reversal tweet and added, “Firstly, I am impressed by the willpower of the @helldivers2 community and your ability to collaborate. Secondly I want to thank our partners and friends at @PlayStation for quickly and effectively making the decision to leave PSN linking optional. We together want to set a new standard for what a live game is, and how developers and community can support each other to create the best game experiences.”
With Helldivers 2, the account-linking issue was easily avoidable. Sony was knowingly selling a game to people who wouldn’t be able to play it — but first, it gave them a paid trial and three months of false hope. At best, it looks like Sony was completely unaware of the logistics that would support its bold new PC strategy. At worst, it all feels mildly diabolical.
Sony Interactive Entertainment
It’s unclear what the 2024 Helldivers 2 Steam riots will mean for future Sony games on PC, but there’s another test coming up soon with the release of Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on May 16. Just like Helldivers 2, the game’s Steam page contains a little yellow rectangle warning players that it requires a PSN account for online multiplayer and the PlayStation overlay. According to SteamDB, Ghost of Tsushima is currently on sale in a handful of countries that don’t have PSN.
As the Helldivers 2 drama began to kick off on May 3, Ghost of Tsushima developer Sucker Punch Productions responded to a concerned fan on X with the following account-linking clarification: “Just so you are aware, A PSN account is required for Legends online multiplayer mode and to use PlayStation overlay. It is not required to play the singleplayer game.”
As long as the terms of engagement are clear and Sony doesn’t attempt to pull the rug out from under players three months after the game comes out, that all sounds just fine. Account linking isn’t a new or even rare scenario in gaming — Microsoft (including Activision Blizzard), Ubisoft, Riot, EA and most other major video game studios require a proprietary sign-in to access their games on Steam and other third-party storefronts. The issue with Helldivers 2 wasn’t account linking. The issue was Sony’s short-sighted execution of a high-profile PC rollout and its poor communication with upset players after the fact.
Most gaming fans want to see PlayStation titles on PC, and Sony wants to wring as much money out of its core franchises as possible by putting them on additional platforms — this plan should be win-win. With Helldivers 2, it’s been more like win-lose-win, but at least we got there in the end.
Update, May 7, 3PM ET: This article previously stated that Helldivers 2 was available to purchase on Steam regardless of region, but at publication, it is still delisted in countries without PSN.
Helldivers 2 is one of the biggest gaming surprises of 2024 so far. We’re only two months into its lifespan, but the longevity the PS5 game is showing is astounding when you consider the core gameplay loop is still relatively limited in scope, and it’s all thanks to how developer Arrowhead Game Studios is handling the live service nature and letting the players control the narrative. Or at least letting them think they’re in control.
For those reading who haven’t fought for managed democracy and defended Super Earth yet, the entire Helldivers 2 community is fighting a galactic war. Super Earth is our home and it’s under threat from a number of alien factions, primarily the Terminids, hyper-aggressive alien bugs, and the Automatons, a species of Terminator-esque robots. There’s reportedly a third alien race coming soon – the Illuminate – more on them later on.
Helldivers must embark on missions to repel the incoming onslaught from the enemy factions and slowly but surely, completing operations collectively helps liberate planets one by one. But rather than portraying a hand-crafted story like in Destiny 2 et al, Helldivers 2‘s narrative exists exclusively through the actions of players, the major orders instructed to us collectively, and a singular man named Joel, and it’s one of the most surprising contenders for best story games of the year so far already.
A&T, not D&D
Joel is essentially the dungeon master at Arrowhead, the mastermind behind the ebbs and flows of this space armageddon. We know little about him other than his name, but he is both our collective enemy and the reason the war efforts have been so successful. This is because Joel decides where to send enemy reinforcements and which planets to focus on. He’s also the one dishing out the major orders – quests assigned to all players simultaneously that directs everyone to focus their efforts in a specific area of the galaxy.
For example, in early April the Automatons were wiped entirely from the map for a short period, before they returned with a vengeance to attack a plethora of planets in the Hydra, Andromeda, Lacaille, and Valdis sectors, further north from their original battlegrounds. The community must now band together to retake Cyberstan, a planet within the Valdis sector that is the home of the Cyborgs, a faction from the first Helldivers game that Automatons are supposedly direct descendants of. Intriguing already, right?
Robot Vietnam
Prior to this major order however, we’ve achieved plenty of successes, and a couple of failures too. Malevelon Creek, a jungle planet many players likened to fighting in Vietnam, was under Automaton control for the longest time until democracy finally won. For some reason, Malevelon Creek felt slightly more difficult to deal with the bots on than some of the other surrounding planets, and thanks to its position on the galactic map, it was often the first place new players ended up when tackling the Automatons for the first time.
It quickly became infamous because of how intense it was, and the sheer number of trees and treacherous terrain meant dealing with robots, most of whom are armed with ranged weaponry, made it a nightmare. Not to mention their eerie robotic chatter piercing through the woods.

However, before we eventually took it, we did lose it for a period of time, but not because Malevelon Creek fell. Instead, the planets around it were lost as most of the war efforts focused on the Terminids instead, which meant nobody could get to Malevelon Creek. Over 2,000 Helldivers were quite literally left behind, because they were on the planet when it was cut off. Their sacrifice was recognized and they are an inspiration to Helldivers across the galaxy.
Combined with the overall narrative of the war efforts, these player-effort-led stories mean Helldivers 2 is like nothing else in games right now. Thanks to the steady patches and updates, with buffs, nerfs, and new equipment, it will be a long time before the game gets stale. But that’s not all they add, because for every new tool or warbond at our disposal, our enemies grow in strength too.
Playground rumors
A month ago, rumors of walking mechs being introduced for Helldivers to use were rife, before clips started surfacing online of players stumbling upon them randomly when planetside. Before too long, they were introduced to the game as a new stratagem. But then flying bugs started showing up out of nowhere – and are now a much more common foe. Elsewhere, as the war against the Automatons continued, they strengthened their efforts and, almost out of the blue, developed and started using gunships.
By far the best example of this school-playground-whispers-style of adding content is what’s happening right now with the Illuminate. Veterans from the first game will know the Illuminate to be an advanced alien race that originated as an aquatic species and developed into masters of stealth, strategy, and mass destruction.
Over a month ago, the occasional clip surfaced online of players being hit by a blue laser, but the community put it down to the flash of an explosion or graphical hiccups. But they kept happening. Then players would spot some blue light acting in a mysterious way, or they thought they’d spotted a cloaked figure half a mile away on their planet but by the time they investigated, the mysterious being had vanished.
However, it’s now surely a matter of when – and not if – the Illuminate show up, because cloaked ships lingering in orbit above planets have been spotted, and there are a lot of them. There’s a high chance they’ve been here all along, waiting for their moment to strike, but there’s very little we can do; the ball is in their court. Rumor has it they’re waiting for Cyberstan to be retaken before they show their faces, but time will tell.
Strategies and tactics
Online communities – mostly the official subreddit – also play into the narrative by members posting infographics and strategies about the best way to win each given major order. Every time a new objective surfaces, so will a directive from various Helldivers 2 experts explaining the best path to success, determining which planets the majority of our focus should be on.
Again, it all plays into the narrative, and while not every major order can be won – Joel has to win every now and then to ensure the narrative and wider war, stay on track and perpetuate, so the players aren’t totally in control – there’s a real community spirit when everyone is working together in tandem.
I’ve played around 35 hours of Helldivers 2 so far – but I’m only level 26. Some players have surpassed level 100, and every time I’m partied up with one, it’s an honor to be led by such an experienced soldier. But it doesn’t bother me that I’m not the one leading the charge because it is just as fun reading up on the official subreddit every day, following the reports from elsewhere online, and seeing just how the galactic war is progressing, how the game’s story is being received, and then changed, by the players themselves.
But something big is coming, Helldivers, and we need to be ready. Godspeed.
Unfortunately, the Automatons have returned, and are launching assaults on a host of new planets. Not only that, but new mission types are available, including a defense level, where players can use giant steel doors to box in enemies.
The current Helldivers 2 Medal cap will stop you from earning more Medals once you reach it. This can be frustrating, especially if you don’t know what the cap is, and sign in to find you’ve missed some of the rewards from Major Orders.
Since it launched earlier this year, Helldivers 2 has continued to go from strength to strength and has even added two major updates in the form of new Warbonds. You’ll need Medals to work through each one, as they’re essentially Battle Passes that offer rewards in exchange for earned currency.
Here’s what you need to know about the Helldivers 2 Medal cap, including what it is, and whether it’s likely to change any time soon.
What is the Helldivers 2 Medal cap?
The Helldivers 2 Medal cap is currently 250. This means that once you hit 250 Medals, you will not be able to earn or bank anymore. It’s unclear whether this is set to change in the future.
We recommend spending any Medals you have, saving 100 at most. This is because of just how many Medals you’ll get passively via Major Orders. Some weeks have seen multiple Major Orders launch, with players earning upwards of 120 Medals just for logging on and playing.
What are Helldivers 2 Medals?
Medals are a kind of currency in Helldivers 2. They are used to unlock rewards via Warbonds, with there currently being three in-game. There’s one Warbond available for all players, which will offer rewards like the Breaker Shotgun in exchange for Medals. Medals can be saved, up to the Medal cap, and spent across whatever Warbonds you have purchased/unlocked.
How to earn more Helldivers 2 Medals
The main way to earn Medals in Helldivers 2 is by completing missions. Higher difficulty levels grant higher rewards, as does completing missions in the same campaign.

Additionally, there are Personal Orders and Major Orders. Think of Personal Orders as daily challenges, rewarding players with Medals for completing tasks like killing 100 enemies with the Machine Gun. Major Orders are akin to the main goal of the community. They tend to reward massive amounts of Medals, depending on the progress of the collective player base over a set amount of time.
Finally, Medals can be found in-mission, behind two-person doors, or in blue and orange crates. The crates require an explosion to open, and there’s no guarantee that they’ll contain Medals (they can also contain Requisition Slips, Super Credits, and Special Weapons).
Is the Helldivers 2 Medal cap being increased?
At present, there’s no word on whether the Helldivers 2 Medal cap will be increased. One thing’s for sure, however, and that is that the rate at which players are earning Medals has been increasing since launch. Given just how easy it is to hit the Medal cap, it’s likely there’ll be some changes to how it works. For now, we’ll have to wait for an official update.
Co-op shooter Helldivers 2is back with yet another update, this time adding two all-new Stratagems that seem specifically designed to help combat the brutal Automaton enemy type.
The official Helldivers 2 X / Twitter account confirmed these powerful weapons with a neat, lore-appropriate graphic that shows off the LAS-99 Quasar Cannon and the MG-101 Heavy Machine Gun. Both can be earned in-game and distributed to players on the battlefield by calling them in via their Stratagem loadout.
The post states that these Stratagems “are available now for use against the Automaton horde,” implying that these powerful weapons are particularly effective against the deadly robotic faction.

For those not in the know, Stratagems are powerful items in Helldivers 2 that can seriously turn the tide of battle if used appropriately. They can come in the form of massive guns as seen above, air strikes, placeable turrets or even something as simple as an ammunition resupply. They require players to input a code with the directional buttons, adding a layer of intensity when enemy counts become particularly frightening on if you’re playing on the higher difficulties.
It will be interesting to see existing Helldivers 2 players takes to these new weapons. The game does feature friendly fire which, as you’d expect, often leads to players (accidentally or otherwise) killing members of their team. No doubt this will also be the case with these two powerful Stratagem weapons.
Launching only last month on PlayStation 5 and PC, Helldivers 2 has a long life ahead of it if its immense popularity is anything to go by. If you’re a regular player and keen to stay up to date on the multiplayer shooter’s future, be sure to read up about the latest details on our dedicated Helldivers 2 update page.
