Buying the Galaxy Z Fold 5 Slim S Pen Case is a bad idea

If you’re considering buying an S Pen for your Galaxy Z Fold 5 and seeing what the S Pen hype is all about, Samsung is giving you two options. One costs a lot more than the other and might be the worse option if you’re worried about the long-term use of the S Pen.

In short, you can add an S Pen to your Galaxy Z Fold 5 by buying either the Galaxy Z Fold 5 Slim S Pen Case for $99.99 or the S Pen Fold Edition (without a phone case) for $54.99.

At first glance, because your Galaxy Z Fold 5 doesn’t have a dedicated S Pen holster, you might be tempted to buy the Slim S Pen Case. That way, you can stick the S Pen to the back of your Galaxy Z Fold 5 whenever you’re not using it. Besides, it doesn’t look bad at all, with its two-color combination and slim profile.

However, you might want to think twice before you spend $100. Not only is the S Pen Slim Case almost twice as expensive as the S Pen Fold Edition, but it is the opposite of a future-proof purchase. It might be the most obsolescent accessory you can buy from Samsung.

The S Pen Fold Edition is way better than the Slim Case

The inherent issue with the $99.99 Galaxy Z Fold 5 Slim S Pen Case is that it won’t be compatible with future Galaxy Z Fold models. Only your Z Fold 5.

Since the S Pen appears to have peaked, the stylus itself will likely work with future Galaxy Z Fold models, but the phone case won’t fit. The only way you will be able to keep using the S Pen is if you carry it around all loose. You will risk the chance of snapping it in half — which you can easily do when you carry it in your pocket if you’re not extra careful.

That is why the Galaxy Z Fold 5 S Pen Fold Edition is the only future-proof choice you have. Although this $54.99 S Pen doesn’t come with a phone case for your Galaxy Z Fold 5, it does come wrapped in a protective case that keeps the S Pen itself safe and secure, and easy to carry around care-free.

The one downside to this design is that you won’t be able to attach the S Pen Fold Edition to your Fold 5 in any way. Again, you’ll have to carry it loose, but at least, this version with the tube-shaped case was made precisely for that.

On the plus side, the S Pen Fold Edition doesn’t lock your Galaxy Z Fold 5 into one specific case model. You can use whatever phone case you want and still have the S Pen secure and ready to be used.

It’s also the cheaper option, and it will most likely keep working with future Z Fold phones if you intend to upgrade later. You won’t have to spend another $100 every time you buy a new Galaxy Z Fold and need an S Pen.

In a way, the S Pen Fold Edition is a real money saver and makes the Slim S Pen Case look ridiculously overpriced, especially if you account for the fact that you’ll need to buy new cases with every new Fold model.

All in all, you may want to steer clear from this Slim Case accessory unless you have money to burn or are certain the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is the last S Pen phone you’ll ever want to use.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 may not get a charging speed upgrade

Samsung’s next flagship foldables might bring larger batteries than their predecessors, but they may not come with an upgrade in charging speeds.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 have received an important certification in China that lists both phones with Samsung’s 25W charger. That charger carries the model number EP-TA800 and is the standard 25W charger that is tested by regulatory authorities for every Galaxy smartphone and tablet that supports 25W charging.

However, just because the certification mentions a 25W charger doesn’t mean that 25W will be the maximum charging speed on the new phones. Flagship Galaxy phones that support 45W charging are tested with the 25W charger as well, and these certifications aren’t always the final confirmation of a device’s maximum charging speed.

That said, if Samsung does bring 45W charging to its foldables this year, there’s a high likelihood that only the Z Fold 6 will support it. The Z Flip 6 is expected to come with the same battery capacity–4,000 mAh—as the base Galaxy S24, which also tops out at 25W charging (only the S24+ and S24 Ultra can charge at 45W).

It’s also worth mentioning that there is no solid evidence that the Z Fold 6 will come with a bigger battery. If it doesn’t, then Samsung may not equip either model with 45W support. Samsung is welcome to surprise us, though, especially since its foldables have been stuck at 25W charging since their inception.

More information about the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 should begin showing up in the coming weeks as we get closer to the second half of the year. Their official launch will take place in early July, a week or two earlier than the Z Fold 5 and Flip 5.

Vivo X Fold 3 Pro is thinner than Z Fold 5 but packs a 1,300mAh bigger battery

While Samsung was the best foldable phone maker for a few years, it is sad to see the company losing the race to its competitors from China, at least when it comes to technological breakthroughs. Rival smartphone brands from China are making foldable phones that are thinner, lighter, and they have better specifications than Samsung’s foldable devices.

Vivo has launched two new foldable phones—X Fold 3 and X Fold 3 Pro—that are thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 5, but still manage to pack much bigger batteries.

Vivo X Fold 3 Pro

The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro is Vivo’s flagship foldable phone for this year. It has a 6.53-inch OLED cover screen and an 8.03-inch OLED foldable inner screen. They both have a 1Hz-120Hz variable refresh rate, 4,500 nits of peak brightness, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision. Both screens have in-display fingerprint readers. It also features an IPX8 rating for water resistance, just like the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 16GB RAM, and 512GB/1TB internal storage. It has two 32MP selfie cameras, one each on its two screens. On the rear, it has a 50MP 1/1.3-inch primary camera with OIS, a 64MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and OIS, and a 50MP ultrawide camera with autofocus. All its rear cameras can record 8K 30fps/4K 60fps videos.

It has stereo speakers, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, IR port, and USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port. It packs a 5,700mAh battery in a body that is just 11.2mm thin and weighs 236g. It has 100W fast wired charging, 50W fast wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging.

In China, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro is priced at CNY 9,999 ($1,385) for the 512GB version and CNY 10,999 ($1,524) for the 1TB version.

The Vivo X Fold 3 and the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro have better specifications and a lower price than the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The Vivo X Fold 3, the more affordable of the two Vivo phones, has a 6.53-inch cover screen and an 8.03-inch inner foldable screen. Its LTPO screens reach 4,500 nits of peak brightness, have a 1-120Hz variable refresh rate, and feature Dolby Vision certification.

It uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, 12GB/16GB RAM, 256GB/512GB/1TB storage, and a 5,500mAh battery. It has two 32MP selfie cameras (one each on the cover screen and inner screen), a 50MP primary camera with OIS, a 50MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom, and a 50MP ultrawide camera with autofocus. All of this is packed in a body that’s just 10.2mm thin, weighs just 219g, and has an IPX4 rating for water resistance.

Other features of the phone include stereo speakers, a side-mounted fingerprint reader, 8K 30fps/4K 60fps video recording, Android 14, Wi-Fi 7, NFC, and 80W fast wired charging.

The Vivo X Fold 3 is priced at CNY 6,999 ($969) for the 12GB+ 256GB version, CNY 7,499 ($1,039) for the 16GB+256GB version, CNY 7,999 ($1,108) for the 16GB+512GB version, and CNY 8,999 ($1,246) for the 16GB+1TB version.

Author’s Note: Both new foldable phones from Vivo are thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 5. They also feature bigger camera sensors for all their rear cameras, which should result in better image and quality, especially in low-light conditions. More importantly, they pack in batteries that are much bigger than the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s 4,400mAh battery. While the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is expected to be thinner and have a slightly bigger battery, it will likely not be able to match Vivo’s new phones in terms of thinness, weight, battery capacity, and charging speeds.

This should worry Samsung a lot. Even though these phones won’t likely reach global markets like Europe and the US, people will likely notice that Samsung’s foldable phones have far lower specifications in comparison. And it could reduce Samsung’s value in the eyes of consumers.

Samsung is expanding the availability of OneUI 6.1 to multiple devices across the Galaxy ecosystem. With the latest roll out, AI features that had been exclusive to the Galaxy S24 series will find a home on the best Samsung phones and tablets from 2023.

The update will encompass multiple tools to help people tackle a variety of tasks. Chief among these is Circle to Search. Made in collaboration with Google, this AI tool lets you learn about a subject on screen either by circling what you see. Doing so brings up Google Search results on that subject down at the bottom.

After what feels like ages since One UI 6.1 made its debut with the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung is finally ready to release the latest software to existing Galaxy smartphones and tablets.

A lot of Galaxy devices are eligible for One UI 6.1, but Samsung will first make the update available for all Galaxy S23 models (FE included), Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, and Galaxy Tab S9, with the rollout set to begin on March 28.

For these devices, One UI 6.1 is a pretty major update, as it will make the Galaxy AI experience accessible to a lot more users instead of keeping it exclusive to the Galaxy S24 and flagship phones that launch in the future.

As mentioned, One UI 6.1 is a big update thanks to its AI features. Galaxy AI can summarize long texts and webpages, automatically format text in notes, translate and transcript voice recordings, and fix grammar and spelling mistakes and change the tone of messages while chatting.

In calls, you can use AI to translate voice and text in real-time for yourself and for the person on the other end of the call. When editing images and photos, you can remove objects and move them around. Galaxy AI also lets you create custom wallpapers based on various themes and keywords.

That’s not all. One UI 6.1 includes features such as Circle to Search, watching normal videos in the gallery in slow motion, custom alarm backgrounds, and more ways to protect battery health.

One UI 6.1 also brings smoother animations across the user interface. However, full-screen Always On Display image support is not coming to devices launched before the Galaxy S24, as expected.

Can you use an old Galaxy Z Fold S Pen with the Fold 5?

The Galaxy Z Fold series, post-Fold 3, is uniquely positioned regarding the S Pen. These foldable phones treat the S Pen unlike the Note and Galaxy S Ultra lineups. And because of their unique design approach for the S Pen, Samsung’s foldable phones can raise some interesting questions pertaining to compatibility and futureproofing.

As many of you know, Galaxy Z Fold devices work only with a specially designed S Pen called the S Pen Fold Edition. You can’t pick up any S Pen from an old Galaxy S Ultra or Note phone and start using it on the foldable screen. It won’t work because it operates at a different frequency, and trying it could even damage the foldable panel.

Can Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Fold 4 users repurpose the S Pen for the Fold 5?

Samsung hasn’t embedded the S Pen Fold Edition inside the frame of its foldable phones. No Fold has a dedicated S Pen holster. And Fold Edition S Pens are always purchased as optional accessories.

This design approach led to an unusual scenario for Galaxy Z Fold users planning to upgrade to a new model. If you think about it, Galaxy Note and S Ultra users who want to trade-in will always exchange the old S Pen for a new one alongside their phones. The S Pen is part of the device rather than an optional accessory.

So, naturally, when Note and S Ultra users trade-in their phones, they exchange the S Pen, too. But that’s not at all how it works for Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Fold 4 users who have purchased an optional S Pen. They don’t have to let go of the accessory when trading in the Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Fold 4 for the newer Galaxy Z Fold 5, for Samsung to consider the old trade-in phones complete in the box.

So, then, what can Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Fold 4 users do with their leftover S Pens when they upgrade to the Galaxy Z Fold 5? Can they still use the old S Pen with the new phone?

Why the caseless S Pen Fold Edition has always been the better long-term choice

In short, yes. Technically speaking, the S Pen that works with your Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Fold 4 is compatible with the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

However, if you bought an S Pen phone case for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Fold 4, you won’t be able to wrap it around the Galaxy Z Fold 5. S Pen cases are incompatible across different Fold devices.

On the other hand, if you bought the S Pen Fold Edition without a case for your Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Fold 4, you’re set! You don’t have to buy a new S Pen or change the way you use the S Pen Fold Edition once you upgrade to the Fold 5.

That’s because the S Pen Fold Edition comes with its own pen case — a protective tube-shaped case that doesn’t attach to the foldable phone in any way but can be carried safely in a bag or pocket without risking damaging the S Pen.

For this reason, the caseless S Pen Fold Edition has always been the superior long-term accessory for Galaxy Z Fold-series users who want to use the S Pen.

Unfortunately, you can’t buy the S Pen’s protective tube-shaped case without the S Pen. So, if you previously bought an S Pen Case for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Fold 4, you’ll have to put the phone case aside and carry the S Pen without any protection. These things are fragile, so you’ll have to be extra careful not to break them.

Galaxy S23, Fold 5, and Flip 5 will get all Galaxy S24 AI features

One UI 6.1 will be an exciting update for anyone who owns a flagship Galaxy smartphone or tablet that launched in 2023, as those are the only devices that are eligible to receive the Galaxy S24’s AI features as a part of that update, at least right now.

When Samsung announced the One UI 6.1 update for its 2023 flagships, the company added a footnote saying that some Galaxy AI features from the Galaxy S24 “may not be available in previous generation models”, but it looks like that footnote doesn’t apply to the Galaxy S23, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5.

A screenshot shared by Twitter leakster Ice universe reveals that the Advanced intelligence menu on a Galaxy Z Fold 5 lists all the AI features that can be found in that same menu on a Galaxy S24. Samsung has also added a description for Circle to Search in there so users know the feature exists (the Galaxy S24 series has Circle to Search but Samsung doesn’t list it with the other features in the Advanced intelligence menu).

The Galaxy S23 FE may be the only device to not get all Galaxy S24 AI features. While it launched in 2023, it features the same Exynos and Snapdragon chips as the Galaxy S22 series instead of the more powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip that sits inside the non-FE Galaxy S23 models, the Fold 5 and Flip 5, and the Galaxy Tab S9.

The One UI 6.1 update will start rolling out sometime later this month, but the rollout of the update is expected to spill over into April for most markets.

Samsung’s official list of Galaxy Z Fold 5 cases presently consists of six models, but if you are wondering, neither has interchangeable NFC cards. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 started the Flipsuit Case trend, and the Galaxy S24 series later borrowed it, but for whatever reason, there is no Flipsuit Case for the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

The closest you can get to a Flipsuit Case design for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is through the Haydonna Popticle Case, which costs $39.99. However, it doesn’t have an NFC element and associated themes and wallpapers.

Other Galaxy Z Fold 5 cases include:

  • Galaxy Z Fold 5 Eco-Leather Case — $79.99. Available in Graphite or Icy Blue, this is the most stylish case for the Galaxy Z Fold 5. It doesn’t have any elements that stand out but offers protection for your foldable device. It has a soft feel and is crafted with eco-conscious materials.
  • Galaxy Z Fold 5 Standing Case with Strap — $84.99. Another case with interchangeable accessories, the Standing Case with Strap lets you swap between a stand or a hand strap attachment. It’s available in two color options: Sand with a pink strap and Graphite with a green strap.
  • Galaxy Z Fold 5 Slim S-Pen Case — $99.99 — is without a doubt the perfect case for Z Flip 5 owners who want to use the S Pen with the foldable display. Once again, this S Pen works only with the foldable display. It’s dust and water-resistant with an IP68 rating. It is available only in one color option — black — so if you want a different color for your S Pen, your only other option is to buy the aforementioned S Pen Case.

Cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 6 could be launched later to compete with iPhone 16

Last month, we exclusively reported that Samsung will hold its next Galaxy Unpacked event in July 2024. At this event, the company will launch its next-generation foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Some reports claim that Samsung will also launch a cheaper version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6, but its launch could be delayed by a few months.

Cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 6 launch could happen in September or October 2024

According to a new report from The Elec (via @Tech_Reve), Samsung will start the production of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 two to three weeks earlier than usual. So, the launch of those two upcoming foldable phones will likely happen two to three weeks earlier. This report lines up with our earlier report about an early launch. So, the launch of the cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 6 will happen around the launch of the iPhone 16 series.

The mass production of Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 components will reportedly begin in early May 2024. Last year, Samsung ordered the mass production of Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 components in late May 2023. Samsung has reportedly set a sales target of 200,000 to 300,000 units for the cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 6. While the shipment numbers aren’t high, it will divert consumer attention from the iPhone 16.

Cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 6 will lack S Pen and could be thinner than standard version

The report claims that the costlier version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will have a built-in S Pen slot, but the cheaper one doesn’t. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is said to be thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 5, and the cheaper version will be even thinner.

Another report claimed that the affordable version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be priced at just $800, which makes it an enticing product. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 6 could have better cameras, a brighter screen, a faster Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, and a slightly bigger battery.

The combined sales target of Samsung’s upcoming foldable phones is around 10 million. The estimated sales figure for the Galaxy S24 series is around 35 million. So, the total sales of Samsung’s high-end phones could be around 40-45 million units, an improvement over last year.

Author’s Note: Samsung could launch the Galaxy Z Fold 6 FE with an $800 price tag. It could have a weaker processor, a dimmer screen, and a smaller battery than the regular Galaxy Z Fold 6. Since a $1,800 foldable phone is too much for most people, a $800 foldable phone with a big screen could attract a lot of people, and some people might consider buying their first foldable phone. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Galaxy Z Fold 5-like specifications for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 FE.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will most likely have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, more RAM, improved cameras, and a bigger battery.
