Two New AirPods 4 Models Expected to Launch in September or October

Apple suppliers will begin production of two new fourth-generation AirPods models in May, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. Based on this production timeframe, he expects the headphones to be released in September or October.

Gurman expects both fourth-generation AirPods models to feature a new design with better fit, improved sound quality, and an updated charging case with a USB-C port. The higher-end ones will also feature active noise cancellation and a speaker in the charging case that can play a sound for Find My location tracking, he said.

Apple plans to discontinue the second-generation and third-generation AirPods after launching the two fourth-generation models, he previously said.

Gurman does not expect new AirPods Pro to launch until next year at the earliest, but he said the current models will get a new hearing aid mode with iOS 18. He added that Apple is also working on a hearing test feature for AirPods.

‘Apple ID’ Expected to Change to ‘Apple Account’ Starting With iOS 18

MacRumors was first to report that Apple was planning to rebrand “Apple ID” to “Apple Account” across its software platforms and websites like iCloud.com as early as this year, and now Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman has corroborated this change.

In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said the new “Apple Account” branding will start to be used later this year both online and in Apple’s next major software releases, such as iOS 18 for the iPhone and watchOS 11 for the Apple Watch.

Apple already refers to funds added to an Apple ID as an “Apple Account balance,” and Gurman said there is an “Apple Account” team within the company. With the full rebranding later this year, the term Apple ID is expected to be completely phased out, over two decades after the company started using it. Apple’s reasoning behind the decision is not known, but “Apple Account” would be more straightforward branding.

Apple will preview iOS 18 and its other major software updates at its developers conference WWDC in June, and the rebranding to “Apple Account” will likely be announced then. The updates should be widely released in September.

The third-generation ‌iPhone SE‌, which launched in March 2022, experienced a significant drop in resale value, losing 42.6% within the first month post-launch.

This depreciation rate contrasts starkly with that of the iPhone 13, which only saw an 18.7% decrease in the same time frame. The ‌iPhone 13‌’s value stabilized after three months, a resilience not seen in the third-generation ‌iPhone SE‌, which continued to depreciate. The iPhone 14 and 15 models have also demonstrated stronger value retention compared to the third-generation ‌iPhone SE‌, further illustrating the gap between Apple’s budget and flagship lines.

These trends suggest that, despite a host of rumored upgrades, the fourth-generation ‌iPhone SE‌ may still face steeper depreciation than Apple’s higher-end models. This pattern of value loss might discourage some consumers from investing in the next-generation ‌iPhone SE‌, particularly those who prioritize resale value in their purchase decision.

The faster depreciation rate of the ‌iPhone SE‌ could be attributed to several factors, including the perception of these devices as entry-level options, technological advancements that make models that use older technologies obsolete more rapidly, and consumer preference for high-end features.

The fourth-generation ‌iPhone SE‌ is rumored to feature an iPhone 14-like design with a 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID instead of Touch ID, a USB-C port, an Action button, and an all-screen look that does away with the Home Button. It is expected to launch in 2025.

Here Are All the M3 Macs Still Expected This Year

Earlier this week, Apple announced new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models, the first Mac updates of the year featuring M3 series chips. But there are other Macs in Apple’s lineup still to be updated to the latest M3 processors.

So, where do the Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro fit into Apple’s M3 roadmap for the year ahead? Here’s what the latest rumors say.

Mac Mini

Apple announced ‌M2‌ and ‌M2‌ Pro Mac mini models in January 2023, which at the time of writing is over 400 days ago.

M3 Mac Mini Feature
Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said in July that he believes a new Mac mini won’t emerge until late 2024 at the earliest, and we haven’t heard any other rumors that move the dial since then. On the other hand, Apple may choose not to upgrade the Mac mini this year and skip the M3 entirely. Approximately 26 months passed between the launch of the M1 Mac mini and the update to the M2 Mac mini​​. Going forward, perhaps the company has an 18-month upgrade cycle in mind, which would mean we could see an M4 Mac mini in the spring of 2025.

Mac Studio

Apple updated the ‌Mac Studio with ‌M2‌ series chips in June 2023. ‌Mac Studio‌ models come with either the ‌M2‌ Max or ‌M2‌ Ultra chip, so logic would suggest we should expect equivalent M3 variants.

However, according to a January report by Taiwanese research firm TrendForce, a new Mac Studio model will launch in mid-2024 with a more powerful M3 Ultra chip than we might otherwise expect.

According to the report, the M3 Ultra chip will be fabricated with TSMC’s N3E node, just like the A18 chip that is expected to debut in the iPhone 16 lineup later this year. This means it would be Apple’s first N3E chip. N3E is an enhanced version of TSMC’s 3nm process, offering slightly better performance and higher production yield.

A couple of days after the TrendForce report, Gurman said he believes Apple is working on a new Mac Studio that is likely to be offered with the as-yet-unannounced fourth variant of the M3 chip. This will, like previous generations, double the components of the “Max” version, meaning that it will feature up to 32 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores. Gurman says that it is likely to launch in the second half of 2024.

Mac Pro

Along with the Mac Studio, Apple updated the Mac Pro with ‌M2‌ series chips during WWDC in June 2023. The ‌Mac Pro‌ is only available in a single chip configuration, and currently ships with the ‌M2‌ Ultra chip that’s used in the Mac Studio.

Logically then, we should expect the next ‌Mac Pro‌ to receive an update to add the same M3 Ultra chip alongside the ‌Mac Studio‌, just like it received the ‌M2‌ Ultra chip last year. Like previous generations, this will likely double the components of the “Max” version, meaning that it will feature up to 32 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores.

Indeed, Gurman thinks Apple is likely to refresh the Mac Pro with this new high-end chip in the second half of the year. Notably, he does not believe that Apple is likely to again abandon the machine after only one year.

MacBook Pro – Already Updated

Apple in November 2023 updated its MacBook Pro lineup with M3 and M3 Pro chips, so the company’s work is already done in that regard.

Apple has so far adopted an 18-month cycle of M1 to M2, and M2 to M3, so it would be reasonable to assume a 2025 launch for M4 MacBook Pro models if Apple sticks with the same tempo. Incidentally, such a roadmap tallies with rumors of the first MacBook Pro with an OLED display and possibly even a touchscreen.

Apple’s Eighth Retail Store in Shanghai Expected to Open This Month

Apple today announced the imminent opening of its eighth retail store in central Shanghai, China, which will be named Apple Jing’an.

Located on Nanjing West Road in the Jing’an District (named after its famous ancient Jing’an Temple), Apple Jing’an will become the 57th Apple store in mainland China. Local reports suggest it will be the second largest store in the city.

Embracing a floral theme, the storefront is currently draped in a veil of blooming flowers. To celebrate the opening, Apple has also made a special wallpaper for Apple devices available to download on its China website.

Apple has not yet revealed when the store will begin to welcome customers, but local reports suggest it will open its doors later this month.

Apple is currently grappling with a significant slump in demand for iPhone sales in the country, with a recent report by CounterPoint Research suggesting ‌iPhone‌ sales dropped by 24 percent in the first six weeks of 2024 alone.

iOS 17.2 expected to land tomorrow (Video)

Last week Apple released iOS 17.2 Release Candidate and we are expecting the final version of the software to be released tomorrow, along with iPadOS 17.2, watchOS 10.2, and macOS Sonoma 14.2.

First Polestar 4 EV deliveries expected before end of 2024

The Polestar 4 EV went into production earlier this month and now Polestar has revealed that the first deliveries of the car will start before the end of the year, customers in China will be the first to get their new Polestar 4 EV.

Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, says: “The first Polestar 4 rolling off the production line today is the culmination of hard work from countless colleagues and partners. Polestar 4 stands out in design and performance, a remarkable SUV coupé in many ways. It is the first Polestar to feature a virtual rear window with world-class digital rear-view mirror. This car plays a very important role in our growing line-up of exclusive performance EVs. It illustrates the value of our diversified and asset-light approach, making use of our partner and major shareholder’s development and manufacturing expertise.

Polestar 4 was first launched at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2023. From the second half of 2025, additional manufacturing will be added in Busan, South Korea, for the local market and export to North American markets. The SUV coupé is the second SUV in the Polestar line-up and in addition to incorporating design cues first seen on Polestar’s concept cars, it is also the fastest Polestar production car to date. Polestar 4 is positioned between Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 in terms of size and price.
