Music is an interesting place today. Converting album sales into streaming equivalents is something the music industry has mastered over the past decade and a half. Now there seems to be more focus on what's next, beyond Spotify and DSP streaming numbers.

I heard YouTube will launch YouTube Shorts. When you start a short message on YouTube, it essentially leads to the product you are promoting. So if it's a music video for Post Malone's new single, BTS can create video content (behind the scenes)… and end up with those numbers at the bottom of the view count. So I think YouTube will be big with DSP.

I don't know how responsible TikTok is because we've seen many examples of this type of backlash. For example: Arizona Zervas. She had a record called "Roxanne" that went viral on Tik Tok. He was independent. It had a broadcast history. All his songs have been listened to more than a million times. After "Roxana" there was no social prompt or anything to activate. And that led to a multi-day war with a buyout of over $10 million.

Last month, I took the initiative to pursue my full-time job. What started as a fun project turned into a side hustle is now my full time job. Three years ago I was planning my honeymoon and was frustrated with the lack of comprehensive information and websites dedicated to honeymoon planning.

Here are five lessons I learned when I turned my part-time job into a full-time job.

1. Just start

All you need is an idea and a way to make money.

The next step is the hardest (which is good, because after that everything is easier). We have to start.

Start small and don't be shy. Richard Branson said, "Great companies start small. You should be a little ashamed of your first product release. But don't be shy. You have to start something. Every entrepreneur starts with something embarrassing."

Momentum builds up over time and you can increase your escape speed.

3. Keep it simple

To be a successful company, you need to be in business.

This means no money or ambition. The beginning of the side hustle is full of distractions. You can take your new business in a million different directions. It is up to you to decide which ones are worth pursuing.

Simply put, focus on the short term and focus your efforts on:

  • Cut costs.
  • Bring value to customers.

This is a very basic list. But it's amazing how many entrepreneurs get distracted by unnecessary goals, build personal influence, or make risky bets.

Focus on short-term wins that increase profits and delight your customers. If your side business is generating increased profits and happy clients, you can quickly transition into a full-time business.

4. Network early and frequently

Getting in touch with your side business can be difficult.

You can only have one idea. You may not have any clients. You could be ashamed of your website. Don't let this stop you. Meeting people in your industry is likely to open new doors for your business and accelerate the growth of your side business.

When I started my business, I worked in product marketing at tech startups. I was no expert on honeymoons. Connecting with other travel agents, partner resorts and my clients (honeymooners) was such an amazing feeling. When I felt like a fraud, I didn't let that stop me.

That's because the nascent legal sector, once seen by mad investors and entrepreneurs as the next gold rush, has become a regular commodity market, with wholesale and retail competition increasing exponentially over the past year while prices have fallen by a similar amount. The overall pie continues to grow, but many operators are seeing their profit margins shrink.

"Everyone was expecting it to be a high-margin boom, but now it's a race to the bottom," said Kobe Evans, co-owner of Boston-based marijuana shop Pure Oasis. “The market has changed very quickly over the past 12 months and there is little chance for investors to achieve the returns they previously expected.”

Overall, 2022 has been a progressive year for the cannabis industry in Massachusetts. Entertainment companies reported record revenue of $1.42 billion through Dec. 18, up from $1.33 billion in 2021.

Thanks to Massachusetts' effective 20% tax on marijuana sales, much of last year's cannabis sales ended up in state coffers, some $284 million, and millions more in "local impact" taxes.

State legislatures expect to increase the maximum tax on recreational purchases, a consumption tax of 10.75 percent, by $165.3 million in the 12 months ending June 30 in their fiscal 2023 budget. Most of that money, $135.83 million, goes to the office The state has substance abuse services to fund everything from housing and recreational services to college tuition for people with opioid misuse to people charged with drunk driving.

Another $19.22 million in excise tax revenue is being paid for the Hemp Control Commission's oversight of the industry, while the Agricultural Resources Department is receiving nearly $1 million to regulate hemp farms and the use of pesticides in marijuana growing facilities. The remaining money will be divided among grants to low-income and supervised communities, community colleges to support low-income students, and youth crime programs.

Recreational marijuana purchases are also subject to a 6.25% state sales tax plus a 3% local tax in most cities that host marijuana retailers, giving municipalities about $42 million in unrestricted funding in 2022.

Marijuana companies have also become major employers in the state. In December, about 22,000 workers were licensed by the state to work in licensed marijuana facilities.

“Legalization has made a difference that people will see,” said David O’Brien, president of the Massachusetts Cannabis Business Association. “You can see it in the tax receipts, the occupied sites, the empty shop windows of the pharmacies, the old warehouses that are now manufacturers.

But marijuana executives argue that the staggeringly large numbers mask tougher trading conditions for individual operators, and they expect 2023 to be mixed at best for the industry.

On the plus side, they said, lower prices at legal pharmacies in Massachusetts could help lure more consumers away from the chronically illegal market, which could partially offset lower profits as volume per transaction goes up. Industry leaders expect that these adoptions, along with a steady stream of curious cannabis users trying the drug for the first time as it becomes an increasingly social normal, will continue to fuel recreational sales and tax revenues in 2023.

"Profit margins may be low, but it's still a profitable and growing business," O'Brien said.

Operators are also awaiting implementation of a new law later this year that would end high city taxes on cannabis companies and allow the opening of so-called "social consumption rooms," which are essentially the equivalent of a cannabis bar. The same law imposes a 15 percent recreational excise tax on entrepreneurs in disadvantaged communities who struggle to open businesses despite state laws demanding fair trade after decades of inconsistent drug prohibition.

Another bright spot. Increased competition is forcing many wholesalers to reduce minimum order quantities and become less picky about which retailers they deal with, making it easier for stores to offer a larger list of different products.

“Now every farmer would love to call in and get more on the retail shelves,” said Victor Xiang, a veteran investor and CEO of Ready, which operates a recreational business in Newton and Natick.

But Chiang and other experts predict several troubling developments that they say could put some cannabis companies out of business by 2023.

Disappointing returns for investors and the failure of a weak Democratic Congress to pass marijuana banking reform before Republicans take control of the US House of Representatives this month means the marijuana business will have less capital than ever before. Especially for young operators. Meanwhile, rising recreational sales in Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York will likely begin to stem the flow of out-of-state shoppers who previously flocked to Massachusetts pharmacies, dampening a key source of demand. At the same time, the price is also dropping.

Local businesses will meet little resistance, Chiang said, as government regulations limit businesses to three retailers and leave little room for a larger player to consolidate the market by acquiring licences. The federal cannabis ban also prevents marijuana companies from filing for bankruptcy, and local operators are more likely to pinch pennies than buy up troubled companies.

In fact, says Chiang, most multinational founders never intended to stay in business for long because they hoped federal legislation would come soon and give them a chance to make money.

"They were financiers looking at it through the lens of a spreadsheet, and they didn't want to dig too deep into the operational side of the business, where there seemed to be a lot of players already," Chiang said. "If I were an independent distributor, I don't know what the exit plan would be other than closing down."

Brandon Marshall: 'I Approach Business Like I Did My Time In The NFL'

"Athletes are the healthiest people on the planet," says former NFL wide receiver Brandon Marshall. "People need to look to us and we need to lead the industry."

After leaving the NFL, Marshall founded the I Am Athlete media network and the Athlete House fitness center. Today it announced a digital expansion of its facility with HOA+, a fitness app that brings home the instruction and workouts athletes can find at HOA gyms. (The monthly price is $39.99 for access to expert coaching and daily lessons, and $149.99 for one-on-one live personal training.)

The entrepreneur turned to Marshall for advice on starting a business and for anyone starting their entrepreneurial journey.

Please give us an elevator speech for the athlete home. How is it different from other fitness companies?

This is not a moment of enlightenment so much as a journey. I spent 13 seasons in the NFL surrounded by the healthiest people in the world. What is your "why"?

mental fitness. It is the cornerstone of everything we do at HOA. In fact, our entire company shuts down for an entire week in October during Mental Illness Week so our team can start over. By prioritizing the mental health of my team, they can do more to help my athletes. With HOA+, we like to offer mental fitness classes as part of our platform.

What was the biggest challenge for you and how did you overcome it?

In 2011, I discovered that I had been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). I spent three months in an outpatient program at McLean Hospital doing mental health treatment, which included dialectical behavior therapy, psychotherapy, and self-esteem. It was intense! But really amazing. I learned coping and self-regulation skills and tools. It's been an incredible journey since then. Today, I feel fortunate to be able to empower other athletes to share their stories and help demystify mental illness.

What does the word "entrepreneur" mean to you?

To me, "entrepreneur" and "athlete" are something like synonyms. I try to keep things simple. It's about culture, production and results.

What do many aspiring business owners need and don't need?

Formal business training. Entrepreneurship is more about courage and vision than anything else. Every day you have to push yourself and lead for your team, most of whom are unwilling to go above and beyond to get there.

How would you describe your leadership style at work? Is this different from your NFL days?

They all look the same. I am certainly a dreamer and a believer in great ideas, but I also find it important to be consistent and go to work every day to do my job. I put the team first, surrounded by like-minded people who are as committed to our vision as I am. Work, like sport, is complex and there are no easy ways.

Is there a particular quote or saying that you use for personal motivation?

"Don't tell me I can't, tell me how I can." Staying confident and motivated pays off. You'll find that our coaches at HOA+ are genuine and bring a level of authenticity that inspires action.
