How to use Apple Watch double tap in watchOS 10.1

How to use Apple Watch double tap in watchOS 10-1

Thanks to the rollout of the latest watchOS 10.1 operating system by Apple this week. Users of the latest Apple Watch can now try out the highly anticipated Apple Watch double tap feature. But don’t worry if you haven’t got one of the latest Apple Watches you can also set it up on all the watches through the accessibility settings on your Apple Watch using hand gestures. Check out the video below to learn more about how you can do it.

The “official” Apple Watch double tap gesture which has been released in watchOS 10.1 is available on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and provides new ways to interact with your applications and smart devices around your home.

The double tap gesture allows users to control their Apple Watch using one hand without even touching the display. This feature comes in handy in situations where the other hand is occupied, such as when walking a dog, carrying groceries, or holding a coffee cup. It’s a small addition that adds a significant amount of convenience and functionality to the overall user experience.

Double tap allows you select the primary action across a wide range of watchOS apps and notifications, including:

  • Opening the Smart Stack from any watch face and scrolling through widgets in the stack.
  • Answering and ending phone calls.
  • Viewing a message from a notification, scrolling through longer notifications with an additional double tap, replying using dictation, and sending a message.
  • Pausing, resuming, and ending a timer.
  • Stopping and resuming a stopwatch.
  • Snoozing an alarm.
  • Playing and pausing music, podcasts, and audiobooks.
  • Switching to the new Elevation view in the Compass app.
  • Taking an iPhone photo with the Camera Remote in the Camera app.
  • Starting or stopping automatic Workout reminders.
  • Performing the primary action from notifications, such as replying to an incoming message from a messaging app and snoozing reminders — including from third parties.

How to use Apple Watch double tap

The applications of the double tap gesture in watchOS apps and notifications are vast. Users can use it to perform a variety of actions including opening the Smart Stack, answering and ending phone calls, viewing and replying to messages, controlling timers and stopwatches, controlling music and podcasts, switching views in the Compass app, controlling the Camera Remote, and interacting with Workout reminders. This makes the Apple Watch even more versatile, enhancing its usability in everyday life.

Powered by Apple’s new 4-core Neural Engine

Apple Watch double feature explained

Powering this new feature is the S9 SiP, Apple’s latest System in Package, and the new 4-core Neural Engine. These components are more power efficient and faster at machine learning tasks than their predecessors, which helps in detecting the unique signature of wrist movements and changes in blood flow when the double tap gesture is performed. This ensures that the gesture works anytime the display is awake, and it has minimal impact on the battery life of the Apple Watch.

For those who like to personalize their devices, the double tap gesture also offers customization options. Users can customize the gesture to select different functions in the Smart Stack and media playback, tailoring their watch to suit their individual needs.

The watchOS 10.1 is available for Apple Watch Series 4 and later, and requires iPhone XS or later running iOS 17. The double tap gesture is enabled by default on Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 running watchOS 10.1, and can be disabled in settings.

Despite its many applications, the double tap gesture is not supported in certain apps and features, including ECG, Heart Rate, Blood Oxygen, Sleep Focus, Walkie-Talkie, Maps, Mindfulness, SOS features, and Workout. This limitation is something that potential users should be aware of.

How to enable double tap on any Apple Watch using hand gestures

The introduction of the double tap gesture on Apple Watch with watchOS 10.1 has added another layer of convenience and functionality to the device. It’s a testament to Apple’s commitment to continually enhance the user experience of its products, making them more intuitive and user-friendly. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast, a busy professional, or just someone who appreciates the convenience of technology, the double tap gesture on the Apple Watch is a feature that can significantly enhance your everyday life.

Apple Magic Mouse Ultimate Edition

Building and designing the ultimate Apple Magic Mouse

You might already be familiar with the iconic Apple Magic Mouse which offering a wireless mouse with minimalistic design and buttons and controls hidden under a touch sensitive top. Although it does lack in a few areas even with Apple’s “revolutionary” design capabilities and resources.

One of the major gripes many people have is the way you need to charge the mouse by plugging in the cable in underneath. This does seem a little strange however you spin it. As surely would be easier to plug the cable into the front of the mouse so that you can continue using it. Although for me the lack of buttons and the lack of ergonomic comfort are the deal breakers for using an Apple Magic Mouse on a daily basis.

Apple Magic Mouse Ultimate Edition

However one Mac user has taken it upon themselves to design and build the Ultimate Edition Apple Magic Mouse, correcting some of these flaws in design. The Work From Hype YouTube channel has documented the process of redesigning and building an upgrade to the existing Apple Magic Mouse.

Redesigning the Apple Magic Mouse

Other articles you may find of interest on the subject of mouse design :

The Apple Magic Mouse, first introduced in 2009, marked a significant innovation in the world of computer peripherals by merging the functionality of a traditional mouse with the interactive capabilities of a touchscreen. However, despite its groundbreaking design, the Magic Mouse has been subject to criticism, particularly in terms of its ergonomics and charging port placement.

Ergonomic design

Another primary criticisms of the Magic Mouse is its flat design. Unlike traditional computer mice, which are shaped to comfortably fit the palm of a hand, the Magic Mouse’s flat design can cause discomfort during prolonged use. This design choice was driven by Apple’s desire to emulate the simple, user-friendly interface of a smartphone’s flat touch surface. However, for users with larger hands or those who spend considerable time using their mouse, the lack of ergonomics can be a significant drawback.

To address this issue, an accessory known as the Mouse Base was developed. The Mouse Base reshapes the Magic Mouse, making it easier to hold and more comfortable to use for extended periods. However, the Mouse Base uses mirrors to redirect the mouse’s laser to the desk surface, which can result in some signal loss and affect the mouse’s performance on certain surfaces. While this accessory improves the ergonomics of the Magic Mouse, it introduces a new potential issue in terms of performance.

Wireless charging

A DIY modification involving a lightning to USB-C connector has been suggested as a solution to this problem, allowing the Magic Mouse to be used while charging. However, this modification is not recommended due to the potential damage it can cause to the mouse.

An alternative solution is the use of a wireless charging grip accessory. This not only makes the Magic Mouse more ergonomic but also adds wireless charging capabilities. Nevertheless, due to Apple’s design, the mouse still cannot be used while charging, which continues to be a significant drawback.

Although the Mouse Base and wireless charging grip upgrades can improve the Magic Mouse’s comfort and charging convenience, they do not fully resolve the inherent issues with the mouse’s design. For users seeking a similar experience to using a MacBook, the Magic Trackpad may be a better option. What you think of both designs, do you use the Apple Magic Mouse  as a travel mouse or as your daily go to desktop controller?

New Apple iPads launching March 2024

New Apple iPads

Earlier we heard that Apple is planning to launch some new Macs this month and if you have been waiting for the new iPads, it looks like we may have to wait a little longer, as they will not launch until 2024.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to launch its new iPads in March of 2024 and there are expected to be a range of different models launching in 2024, more details are below.

Apple isn’t planning to launch new iPads until around next March, I’m told. In the meantime, we got something a bit less exciting: a new low-end Apple Pencil.

That probably won’t change anytime soon, but Apple will at least update the lineup with new hardware in 2024. I’ve written that the company has been working on a slew of models, including versions of the iPad Air, entry-level iPad and iPad mini with bumped-up specifications. There’s also a revamped iPad Pro in the works. I’m told that Apple is currently planning to release at least the more minor iPad refreshes in March. – Mark Gurman, Bloomberg.

So it looks like we will see an iPad Air, some new iPad Pro models, and a new iPad Mini next March, we are looking forward to seeing exactly what Apple has planned for its iPad lineup and whether there will be any design changes.
